Elite Sport Programme
Hockey
This Programme is an addition to the High School Programme.
We currently have 3 boy’s teams and 3 girl’s teams at the college. These teams play at
various levels in the Wellington Hockey Secondary Programme
The aim of the Programme is to give our students more opportunities to succeed in sport. In this Programme they take part in regular strength and conditioning training, specialist
sport training if they play Hockey/Basketball/Rugby/Netball/Football. We can offer places
in other sports if the numbers are great enough. Heretaunga College Boys’ Hockey Programme is headed up by the Head of Physical
Education, Hayden Shaw. Leadership training, looking at coaching and leadership in sport as well as being exposed
to a variety of different training methods such as boxing, speed and agility, swimming,
circuits, resistance training, plyometrics, aerobic endurance and team sports is included. Hayden is a former NZ age group and National League player. As a coach, he has worked at
various levels from High school players to international players. Hayden has been coaching at
Heretaunga College for the last 6 years, as well as coaching Wellington youth sides. He is
currently the Assistant Coach of the Capital National Hockey League Men’s Team, a team that
comprises current and former NZ players. Regular physical testing is an important part of the course which allows us to monitor the
student’s development as the year goes on. Hayden runs training in the off-season for the top players in the school to aid in their
development so they can push for higher honours in the coming years.
