Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that take place with that matter. We will experiment with common chemicals like soil, Plaster of Paris and more. We will build model crystals out of toothpicks and raisins, make our own sidewalk chalk, and even create our own tootsie rolls! For as long as humans have existed, the Earth has been our home. Unfortunately, throughout history, we haven’t always been very kind to her. During this camp, we will explore ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. We will make recycled paper, experiment to find the best way to filter dirty water, build a lake in a bottle, and experiment with solar energy. Instructor: Mad Science Mon-Fri / 5 sessions / $124: 10199Jun 20 – Jun 24 PM Louisville Radical Reactions & Chemical Counting Ages 6-11 In this camp, we will explore chemical reactions through experiments! We will test water, make a potato battery, pop corn, and more. We will even conduct a color changing experiment in a tube that will continue to change colors for up to two weeks! We are going to be exploring all kinds of different chemical reactions including experiments with fruit, soap and electroplating. We will even make a cup of “Brain Goo” to take home! Instructor: Mad Science Watts-Up? During this camp, we’ll take a trip down the super circuit highway. Basic electronics will start the day, followed by practical applications of electricity in circuits and motion. We will conduct experiments with the Van de Graaff generator. We will build simple circuits and study alternative energy sources. We will see if we can get electricity to move through water and see if we can solve the circuit maze. On part two of our journey down the electron highway, we will experiment with magnets and alternative sources of power. We will see if we can defy gravity using a magnetic force and we will create our own electromagnet! Instructor: Mad Science Mon-Fri / 5 sessions / $124: 10201Jul 11 – Jul 15 PM Bear Creek Engineering with LEGO® Ages 6-10 Machines and Mechanisms Rev up your engine! This camp day is all about spy tools, codes and secret communications. Communicating in secret is very important for a successful spy. As you may know, the work of spies and secret agents can be very dangerous. We always have to look over our shoulders and make sure we are not followed. Spies have to be on the alert for suspicious characters. They have to check their phones for electronic listening bugs, and check their rear-view mirrors to make sure they are not followed. Because spies have to be so careful, they need scientific tools and techniques to complete missions without being foiled or detected. At this camp, you will become scientific spies and will learn about spy tools and techniques. Discover how to send secret messages to your friends using special codes! Children will learn how to talk with numbers, just like computers, and create their very own code “crackers”! Young detectives will use their Mad Science observational skills to discover the writer of the “Mystery Letter”. Curious minds are welcome here! BitsBox will allow kids to animate objects and create minigames: take your pet to the vet, play tic-tac-toe with a friend on another device, and create a virtual ant farm for your critter friends! When not in the lab, students will be doing hands-on art projects and learning how to use digital cameras and Photoshop. The camp includes time in the computer lab, interactive games, art projects, outdoor recess and an outdoor photo safari. Students should bring two peanut-free snacks, lunch and weather-appropriate clothing. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital camera, as long as it has a removable SD card (smart phones are not used for photography for this camp). A $25 materials fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of camp. Do you want to be a detective? This session is filled with the science of sleuthing! One of the most famous sleuths you may have read about is Sherlock Holmes. This fictional sleuth is famous for solving crimes using his very logical and scientific powers of observation. Just like Sherlock Holmes, we will attempt to solve mysteries and figure out fictitious crimes through science. Campers will be sleuths on the scene and will ask questions, make observations, and develop theories about what happened! 10133Jun 6 – Jun 10 AD* YWCA of Boulder 10134Jun 20 – Jun 24 AD* YWCA of Boulder 10135Jul 18 – Jul 22 AD* YWCA of Boulder 10136Aug 8 – Aug 12 AD* YWCA of Boulder Instructor: Mad Science Junior Engineers Mon-Fri / 5 sessions / $124: 10203Jul 25 – Jul 29 PM Superior Instructor: Yolanda Hernandez Mon-Fri / 5 all-day sessions / $350: *AD = all-day session, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Ages 6-11 Machine Mania We will act as junior architects as we explore shapes, structures and design!
