Happy Summer 2016!
We couldn’t be more excited to kick off our 10th season of BVSD
Lifelong Learning Summer Camps! After a successful 2015, our
planning team spent the winter finding some of the most interactive,
educational and FUN camps out there for your kids, tweens and teens.
I’m happy to announce that for Summer 2016 we have added more than
90 individual camps to keep your students entertained all summer long.
I’m also excited about the launch of our Summer Camp Scheduling
Matrix. You’ll find it on pages 5–7 and we know it is going to be a tremendous help when
trying to schedule your kids for multiple weeks and camps over the summer.
Finally, thanks to all of you for making our BVSD Lifelong Learning Summer Camps so
successful. We are proud of our offerings this summer and we appreciate your continued
support of our programs. Register your child by March 31, 2016, and take advantage of our

Electrical
Engineering Crazy Chemistry
& Earth Awareness
Ages 6-11
Chemistry is all around us and part of our everyday
lives, but what is chemistry? Chemistry is the study
of matter and the changes that take place with
that matter. We will experiment with common
chemicals like soil, Plaster of Paris and more. We
will build model crystals out of toothpicks and raisins, make our own sidewalk chalk, and even create
our own tootsie rolls! For as long as humans have
existed, the Earth has been our home. Unfortunately, throughout history, we haven’t always been
very kind to her. During this camp, we will explore
ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. We will make
recycled paper, experiment to find the best way to
filter dirty water, build a lake in a bottle, and experiment with solar energy.

Radical Reactions
& Chemical Counting Ages 6-11
In this camp, we will explore chemical reactions
through experiments! We will test water, make a
potato battery, pop corn, and more. We will even
conduct a color changing experiment in a tube that
will continue to change colors for up to two weeks!
We are going to be exploring all kinds of different
chemical reactions including experiments with
fruit, soap and electroplating. We will even make a
cup of “Brain Goo” to take home!
Instructor: Mad Science
Watts-Up? During this camp, we’ll take a trip down
the super circuit highway. Basic electronics will
start the day, followed by practical applications of
electricity in circuits and motion. We will conduct
experiments with the Van de Graaff generator. We
will build simple circuits and study alternative energy sources. We will see if we can get electricity
to move through water and see if we can solve the
circuit maze. On part two of our journey down the
electron highway, we will experiment with magnets
and alternative sources of power. We will see if we
can defy gravity using a magnetic force and we will
create our own electromagnet!

Ever heard of the Mad Scientist that tried to build
a person? In this camp, we will follow in the footsteps of Dr. Frankenstein as we learn about human
biology. Sir Isaac Newton was very curious about
how things move. We will discover Newton’s Laws
of Motion and something called inertia in this

Cell City
Chemical indicators can be considered the tattletales of chemistry. They give us clues about the
substances they come in contact with, which
means we will explore the uses of indicators and
what they can share with us. We will experiment
with dry ice, conduct a taste test, and even make
our own soda pop! Did you know there are about
20-30 trillion cells in the human body and they’re all
working together and doing different jobs to keep
you alive? During camp, we will explore the cell as
if it were a city. We will learn about the different
organelles of a cell and how each has its own job.
Campers will make a model of a cell in a Petri dish
to take home!

Ages 6-11
The Wright Stuff
Children will explore the fundamentals of aerodynamics in this hands-on program about how things
fly. Campers will engage in the process of getting
a rocket into space and will explore the communication required to plan, execute, and evaluate a
space mission. We will investigate the requirements of building a rocket and the systems necessary to get it into space. We will experiment with
roll, pitch, and yaw. From the basic principles of
flight, to building airplanes and testing them in
wind tunnels, to hovercraft and balloon copter
building, children will understand what makes
things fly and how different types of aircraft fly.
Campers will take home a rubber band-powered
airplane, various paper airplane designs, balloon
copters, boomerangs, and mini Frisbees.

CAMP TIMES
• AM camps: 9am - 12:30pm
• PM camps: 12:30pm - 4pm
Most camps run Monday through
Friday, unless otherwise noted.
Science Fiction
Inventing means dreaming! Jules Verne and Isaac
Asimov wrote about things that would be available
in the future. These science fiction writers developed the reality of their current technology into
future possibilities. During this camp, participants
will look at today’s technology and imagine what
they will become tomorrow. We will follow a telecommunications timeline and develop one for our
current transportation system. Our future inventors will get a lesson on lasers and work on protecting a space ship from damaging space rays.
Campers will learn the fundamentals of rocketry
including the parts of a rocket, the stages of rocket flight, and how Newton’s third law applies to a
rocket traveling to space. The children will build
their own Mad Science Rocket to take home.

important for a successful spy. As you may know,
the work of spies and secret agents can be very
dangerous. We always have to look over our shoulders and make sure we are not followed. Spies
have to be on the alert for suspicious characters.
They have to check their phones for electronic listening bugs, and check their rear-view mirrors to
make sure they are not followed. Because spies
have to be so careful, they need scientific tools and
techniques to complete missions without being
foiled or detected. At this camp, you will become
scientific spies and will learn about spy tools and
techniques. Discover how to send secret messages to your friends using special codes! Children will
learn how to talk with numbers, just like computers,
and create their very own code “crackers”! Young
detectives will use their Mad Science observational
skills to discover the writer of the “Mystery Letter”.
Curious minds are welcome here!

In this camp, kids will utilize BitsBox online coding
and programming tools to create their own apps
that can be shared with friends and family. BitsBox
will allow kids to animate objects and create minigames: take your pet to the vet, play tic-tac-toe
with a friend on another device, and create a virtual ant farm for your critter friends! When not in
the lab, students will be doing hands-on art projects and learning how to use digital cameras and
Photoshop. The camp includes time in the computer lab, interactive games, art projects, outdoor
recess and an outdoor photo safari. Students
should bring two peanut-free snacks, lunch and
weather-appropriate clothing. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital camera, as long
as it has a removable SD card (smart phones are
not used for photography for this camp). A $25
materials fee is payable to the instructor on the
first day of camp.
Do you want to be a detective? This session is filled
with the science of sleuthing! One of the most famous sleuths you may have read about is Sherlock
Holmes. This fictional sleuth is famous for solving
crimes using his very logical and scientific powers
of observation. Just like Sherlock Holmes, we will
attempt to solve mysteries and figure out fictitious
crimes through science. Campers will be sleuths on
the scene and will ask questions, make observations, and develop theories about what happened!
