What’s Up!
ANTIQUES DEALERS
ASSOCIATION TO BE
ORGANIZED
The Second meeting for the organization of
the Utah antiques dealers association was
hosted by Fred Hightower and Mary
Corporon on July 2nd, 2008 at Moriarty’s,
their Salt Lake City antiques Mall.
The turnout for this second meeting was excellent, with topics of discussion ranging
from proposed membership standards, to
formation of commitees for the purpose of
developing the bylaws and documents necessary for the legal creation of the association.
Along with about 30 dealers, representing
antiques shops throughout Utah, were Utah
House of Representative member Todd
Kiser and Lobbist Sue Ferry, who provided
information regarding Utah legislative actions with potential ramifications to the
Utah antiques community.
The next scheduled meeting of the organizing committee will be August 13, 2008 at
7:00 pm., and will be held once again at
Moriarty’s Antiques Mall in Salt Lake City.
Every Utah antiques dealer is invited to attend. Make sure you make it out and participate.

COLLECTING RECORDS
GOLDMINE RECORD GRADING
SYSTEM
Mint (M) Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never played, possibly even still
sealed.(More on still sealed under “Other Considerations”). Should be used sparingly as a
grade, If at all.
There seems to be more and more interest
these days, in collecting old vinyl records.
And why not, the rewards can be
admittedly plentiful. For many of us, the
music we grew up with is a defining
element of our youth. Vintage record
albums are like magic mirrors, reflecting
popular culture, and collecting these old
records, both albums and 45’s is like a
flashback to our past. Even a little static
or the occasional scratch doesn’t seem to
detract,
but instead adds more
authenticity to the experience.
Unlike the more pedestrian packaging
used for audio tapes and cd’s, the cover
art on record albums is large in scale,
often bold, spectacular and reflective of
the popular culture of its time. At its best,
cover art is almost frameable artwork.
And best of all, these memories can often
be purchased for less than they cost us
the first time around.
Old records can be found at antiques
shops or on the internet, and still abound
at flea markets and yard sales, where they
can often be bought for a few cents to a
dollar. As with all collectibles, remember
that condition is a primary consideration
when buying old records. Covers should
be clean and unmarked or scuffed. The
records should be unscratched and still
capable of producing good quality sound.
Most collectors have little use for records
that have names or other writing on
covers or records themselves.
An excellent resource for record
collecting is Goldmine Record Album (or
45’s) Price Guide, Neely. Remember that
the prices shown in collecting guides are
for records in perfect or near perfect
condition. A record that’s worth $100.00
in (mint) still sealed condition, might only
be worth $25.00 in near mint condition,
and $1.00 or less in well played, or
average used condition.
Near Mint (NM or M-) A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won’t give a grade higher
than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record
should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than
the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.
An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects.
No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such
as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you
just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink-wrap. Near Mint is the
highest price listed in all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the
opinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest Goldmine
book value.
Very Good Plus (VG+) Generally worth 50 percent of the Near Mint value. A Very Good
Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous
owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may
have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don’t affect one’s listening experiences. Slight
warps that do not affect the sound are “OK”. The label may have some ring wear or
discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been
misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight
wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs
of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was
taken out of print and sold at a discount. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with
it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good
Plus record highly acceptable.
Very Good (VG) Generally worth 25 percent of Near Mint value. Many of the defects
found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident
upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and fade, but will not
overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light
scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be
marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be
true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the
same time, only two or three of them. Goldmine price guides with more than one price
will list Very Good as the lowest price. This, not the Near Mint price, should be your
guide when determining how much a record is worth, as that is the price a dealer will
normally pay you for a Near Mint record.
Good (G), Good Plus (G+) Generally worth 10-15 percent of the Near Mint value. Good
does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable
and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and
scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn
white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine.
Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. If it is a
common item, you’ll probably find another copy in better shape eventually. Pass it up.
But, if it’s something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it...but
keep looking to upgrade.
Poor (P), Fair (F) Generally worth 0-5 percent of the Near Mint price. The record is cracked,
badly warped, and won’t play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve
is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and writing. The
LP cover barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, crinkled, and
written upon. Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this
condition should be bought or sold for no more than a few cents.

favorite with collectors. You will also find
earrings, pins and bracelets, often in art deco
or other styles, sometimes with catches or
clasps marked “made in Czechoslovakia”.
Starting in the 1920’s Czechoslovakia was
also producing ladies handbags, with the
same exceptional glass beadwork as their
jewelry. These bags came in many shapes
and sizes, and designs can be quite simple,
to very elaborate. Along with the glass
beaded purses, you will also find boldly
designed bags made of bright colored wood
bead.
Bohemian glass
History: In 1526, Ferdinand I of Habsburg
took up the Czech throne, initiating
Habsburg rule which lasted until 1918. The
beginning of the end of the Habsburg
dynasty came with the assassination of
Francis Ferdinand in 1914, preceding World
War I.
In 1918, with the end of WWI, and the fall
of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Czechs
& Slovaks jointly proclaimed the
establishment
of
independent
Czechoslovakia, formed from Bohemia,
Moravia and Austrian Silesia. Thus modern
Czechoslovakia was born.
In 1939, Czechoslovakia was invaded by
Hitler’s army, its territories seized, and
occupied by Germany until the end of
World War II. After WWII, the communist
party seized power in 1948. This totalitarian
regime lasted until the revolution of 1989.
While there are a wide variety of items
collected from Czechoslovakia, most fall into
the categories of glassware, perfumes,
jewelry, handbags, pottery and porcelain.
Many Czechoslovakia collectors also include
Bohemian glassware. This 19th century red
blue or amber glass, cut back to clear, found
with designs incorporating deer, castles,
trees and animals, came from the former
country of Bohemia, now a part of
Czechoslovakia.
Made from the early teens until present, the
most common pieces of Czech glass are
varicolored and mottled. These pieces are
found from subdued to very bright colors.
The Czechs also made single color and cased
glass which is found in many colors.

Description:
This classic book has been out of print for five
years, and now this volume is back in print in a
greatly expanded, revised edition.
Collectors will be pleased to know that all pages
of the original edition have been retained. More
than 800 perfume bottles are shown in color.
The revised edition adds new essays by three
leading perfume bottle authorities. Ken Leach
describes America’s fascination with perfume
bottles and related items (c. 1910-1950), with
special attention to the role played by Hollywood.
Ruth Forsythe writes about recent reproductions
of Czech perfume bottles. Madeleine France
provides new historical perspectives and offers a
hierarchy of perfume bottle categories to aid the
collector.
Accompanying these essays are 62 new
photographs in spectacular color.

NEW CENTURY COLLECTOR
THE PROPOSED INCLUSION OF ANTIQUES SHOPS
IN THE PAWNSHOP LAW, AND HOW WE AS COLLECTORS CAN HELP
It has, in many ways been a difficult year
for the Utah antiques industry. The longtime challenge that brick and mortar stores
have faced in regards to internet commerce,
coupled with changing customer tastes,
demographics and a weak economy, has
many antiques dealers feeling just a little
pensive and edgy.
In this already somewhat uncertain environment, our local antiques shops are also facing the spectre of difficult new business
regulations coming from the next Utah legislature. Generally referred to as the “Pawnshop bill”, because it would bring antiques
shop record keeping and regulations in line
with the current, more restrictive pawnshop
requirements. Passage of these new laws in
an already difficult business environment
would surely create an unwarranted burden
on antiques shops, which operate quite differently than pawnshops.
pile an electronic registry of current inventory, and each subsequently purchased
item. Required information would include
a complete description, amount paid for the
item, the date and time of purchase and the
sellers name along with drivers licence information and fingerprint. The dealer
would then be required to hold the item for
a period of time in a separate staging area,
making it available for inspection by the local police department. The dealer would
also be charged an annual fee of perhaps
several hundred dollars to pay for the cost
of the program.
best interests. There are thousands and
thousands of collectors in Utah, and if together we oppose these changes, our voices
will be loudly heard. If we act soon we can
make a big difference.
If we all just take a few minutes, and contact our State Senator or House member,
and let them know we oppose the inclusion
of antiques shops in the Pawnshop and Secondhand Merchandise Act , we would make
a powerful statement.
You can find your legislators name and telephone # at
It would seem to me that these regulations Utah State Senate:

Shop Profile:
MAIN STREET MEMORIES
Layton, Ut
If you’re driving between the Salt Lake and the
Sunset to Ogden area, the only antiques shop
you’ll find along the way is Main Street
Memories in Layton. Be sure to jump off the
freeway. Not because it’s the only store around,
but because this it’s a terrific place to shop for
antiques.
I’ve met a lot of antiques dealers and
collectors in my time, but all I can say about
Mike Occhipinti, who, along with wife
Nancy owns Main Street Memories in
Layton, is, this guy takes this stuff seriously.
A longtime collector of McDonald’s
memorabilia, Mike decided that antiques
shops, shows and auctions, along with the
McDonalds collector club just wasn’t
enough. After retiring, Mike actually took a
job at McDonalds so he could get his hands
on some items that could only be acquired
by ordering them through the store catalog.
I call that a real commitment to collecting.
You’ll find Mike and Nancy have that same
commitment to their store.
collecting. After looking around, Nancy
settled on an old home located at 270 No.
Main Street in Layton. Built in 1907, the
home offered exactly the kind of charm
she was looking for. Nancy bought the
house, made it ready, filled it with
antiques, left her longtime job at HFAB
(Hill Field) and was off and running.
12 years later, Mike & Nancy couldn’t
be happier with their decision. Mike has
long since given up his stint at
McDonalds and along with Nancy has
now expanded Main Street Memories to
include 22 dealers. And this place is
packed with antiques. From the tractor,
pumps, wagon wheels and yard art in
front, to neatly organized rooms filled
with art pottery, china, glassware,
crockery, primatives, vintage toys,
Jewelry, lots of furniture, and more ......

So, next time you’re flying down I-15 between

for you, and you never know, you might find just
what your looking for, and at the very least make
