Mersea Island Fundraising
For Headway
The majority of readers will not have heard of Headway, the brain injury association, and nor had we
until 5 years ago while living in Hampshire. Our son Iain (now 30) was hit by a car and in a coma for 10
weeks. Any parent can imagine what a nightmare this was for us, his family and his friends. We were
told that the longer the coma lasted the more long-term problems Iain would be left with and sadly this
was the case. He came home after 3 years rehabilitation in Bath and Salisbury. Our lives changed.
Colin, my husband, took early retirement to help care for Iain and in August we moved back to Mersea,
where I was born, and where we had met and married. In Hampshire I had set up a fundraising support
group organising events, which included sponsored treks to Nepal and Kilimanjaro, and decided to do
the same here. Hence ‘MIFH’ was born.
To cut a very long story short, while Iain was still in a coma a family friend sent for a Headway
publication. This contained very emotional statements from brain injury survivors and their carers. I
cried all the way through and realised we had to stop feeling sorry for ourselves. Life was going to be
different but we had to get on with it for Iain’s sake. Having to learn to walk, talk and eat all over again
was hard work for Iain and although anger and frustration reared their ugly heads (and still do at times)
his determination, sense of humour and positive attitude helped him through. He attends the Headway
Day Centre in Colchester, which has 50 places for people in Iain’s situation and where he can learn
new skills and enjoy time away from his aged parents!
Headway is a relatively small charity but the only charity supporting brain injury survivors with 110
groups and branches across the UK helping to provide rehabilitation and respite. Headway Essex
supports 250 brain injury survivors and their families across the county. I am now organising another
trek to Nepal (see Page 10 for details) and looking for 25 people who are up for a challenge to help
raise a minimum of £40,000. It’s the least I can do.

This trek, organised by Mersea Island Fundraising for Headway, will take you
through the Kingdom of Nepal, close to the Tibetan border. It has been specially
chosen by the world famous mountaineer Doug Scott, CBE in conjunction with
Community Action Treks Ltd. You will trek through remote villages, rarely visited
by trekking groups, to heights of 4100m. With clear weather you will experience
wonderful views of the Himalayan peaks stretching from the Annapurnas in the
west, across Manaslu to the Langtang Himal in the east.
Your Challenge
* To raise a minimum of £1,750 for Headway, the brain injury association
(to be divided between Headway Essex and Headway UK)
* To achieve the necessary fitness level to enjoy one of the most exciting
and challenging experiences of your life.
* Headway, the brain injury association started in 1979 because of a
growing number of people surviving brain injury.
* Each year around 1.4 million people attend hospital A&E in the Uk
following head injury of which 186,000 of these are confirmed brain injuries
* There are over 500,000 people living with permanent disabilities as a
result of head injury
* Life expectancy for brain injury survivors is normal, so people live with
the effects for life

Fitness Studio Update
We are pleased to see many students and parents along with other members of the
community using the Fitness Studio during the Holiday periods. It is also good to see
ex-students keeping their fitness levels up and choosing to use the facilities at
Stanway School. The Fitness Studio is now open to members of Year 9, who can use
the gym from 3.30 p.m. - 5.30 p.m. only or after this time if they come with an adult
member. The cost for one year £150.00 or a £15 induction session and £2.50 per visit.
As a nation we are more and more concerned about the lack of exercise people are
involved in and the ever increasing numbers of over weight children and adults alike.
We are trying to provide affordable fitness for all members of the community to access.
The school has spent over £50,000 in setting up the Fitness studio and there is another
£30,000 needed to staff it each year. We therefore have to charge a small fee, which is
cheaper than other facilities in the area. Our aim is to cover the cost of instructors,
maintenance and servicing, if there is any profit it will go back into the school for the
benefit of the students.
With the recently refurbished old Drama Studio we are now in a position to offer
group fitness classes. Some students already attend activities like dance, karate and
boxing outside school and have to pay quite a lot per session. We are going to be
offering street dancing, hip-hop, aerobics, circuit training, boxing skills, legs bums and
tums and much more for a reduced rate - students £2 per session and adults £3.50 per
session. Some classes started in October but new classes and times will be advertised
soon. Activities are available to all students (boys and girls), parents and the general
community.

Tony and Kylie Sheppard set up the Salsa Essex Dance Club in 2004 so that they could share their passion for dance.
Salsa has such an infectious beat that it makes you want to get up and dance, it is also good exercise as well as being a

Modelling and Acting Agency with many of their children
performing in the West End and on T.V. The academy
offers LAMDA exams in singing, verse and prose and

Well, as with all situations in life a positive mental
attitude is essential as is a capacity to count your
blessings.
I've had two bypass operations, a hip
replacement and two new knees, I've only got
one eye and my hearing is defective. My memory is not what it used to be. Also my
memory is not what it used to be.But I am thankful that I still have my drivers licence. It
is such a joy to hear the friendly beeps and see the cheery waves of fellow travellers.
Recently I got my GP's permission to join a seniors aerobics class. I bent and twisted,
gyrated, jumped up and down, but by the time I got my leotard on the class was over!
Just remember You don't stop laughing because you get old, you grow old because you
stop laughing.
