• There are several terms used to describe incentives

Motivation is viewed as lack of an incentive or drive
to do something
Real question is: Won’t do; Can’t do; or a little of

What is an Incentive?
• An incentive (reward or reinforcement) is
ANYTHING that increases a behavior or keeps it
going (Teachers Yelling)
• The same identical incentive (behavior goes up) for
one student can be a punisher (behavior goes
down) for another student
Arguments Against Incentives
• The Bribery Argument- Something they
should do anyway
• The Equity Argument- Everyone has to get
exactly the same thing to be fair
– It’s not exactly the same but what they need
to equally succeed
• Harms Internal Motivation- Alfie Kohn
(Punished by Rewards)
– Not busy work, challenging, chance of success
– Feedback about progress
Assessing or Finding Incentives
Golden Rule: Can’t take too much time, Can’t cost too
much money, Can’t be too complicated





