The Artist and the Stone
4
Project presentation
The Artist and the Stone speaks of mobility, citizenship,
globalization, desire and constraint. The piece literally
negotiates the twofold movement of a subject (a
performance artist) and an object (a 25-tonne block of
stone) from the same refugee camp in the south West Bank
to Spain.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
5
Project presentation
The Artist and the Stone
is concerned with the ways people can bypass restrictions
and limitations in their daily life, managing to move
through systems imposed on them, creating their own
paths, languages and forms of expression, driven by their
desires. All of these aspects also lead to reflections on how
migrations and temporary stays influence the destination
country.

Origins of the project

The Artist and the Stone
Origins of the project
People involved
Giuliana Racco’s concern with narration, desire and
movement (including that of workers, migrants and illegal
refugees) and Matteo Guidi’s investigations into highly
imaginative practices in closed spaces of control (such as
cooking and photography in prisons) converged within
the context of refugee camps in the West Bank.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
8
Origins of the project
The Artist and the Stone emerges from a seven-month
research-residency period in the West Bank which
concentrated on the simple actions people can adopt
to manage their paradoxical condition of inherited
temporariness and exception.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
9
Origins of the project
During this first stay in the West Bank, the artists realized
the walking piece and video In Between Camps with a
group of interdisciplinary collaborators. Following the
ground-embedded stone traces of a Roman aqueduct
for two days, they extended the simple daily practice of
‘taking a stroll’ over an expansive and contended territory.

12
Origins of the project
Months later, a performance artist who participated in the
trek (Ibrahim Jawabreh) expressed his desire to travel to
Europe in order to develop his artistic practice.
What is ‘exceptional’ about this request is that, as a refugee,
he by birth lacks the necessary citizenship conditions to
freely access the mobility opportunities available to the
majority of artists in the international art world.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
13
Origins of the project
The Artist and the Stone
emerged from this seemingly banal request which
however manifests the tension between desire and
constraint.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
14
Origins of the project
The Artist and the Stone
situates itself at a cross-section of considerations on the
expanding role of (artistic) mobility, the growing border,
restrictions within Europe and most of the Western world,
and the trade of goods across borders.
Matteo Guidi | Giuliana Racco
The Artist and the Stone
15
Origins of the project
The Artist and the Stone
promotes cross border mobility in the Euro-Mediterranean
area, while fostering intercultural dialogue.
The Artist and the Stone
is a platform for activities, including film cycles, concerts,
performances, workshops and public interventions, to be
held in a range of multidisciplinary contexts.

Project description
Guidi and Racco decided to give form to this restraint by
contemporaneously negotiating a double movement:
that of the artist (through appeals to official art
institutions) and that of another element from – a large
block of stone, weighing approximately 25,000 kg –
extracted from a nearby quarry.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Palestinian artists are part of
the global art discourse.
Renowned practitioners, such as Mona Hatoum (left) and Emily Jacir, (centre) are
habitués of international art exhibitions; Jacir winning the Golden Lion at the 2007

The specific geo-political situation, along with the consequent conditions of exile and
occupation, are so strong as to become leitmotifs, holding true for practices of artists
including Larissa Sansour (left), Khaled Jarrar and so on. And despite the ongoing
conflict, international exhibition venues and events exist in the context, namely, the AlMa’mal Foundation, the Al-Qattan
Foundation (with the Mosaic Rooms in London) (centre), Al-Hoash Art Court, the
International Academy of Art Palestine and the Qalandiya Biennale (right), able to invite
international artists to interact with and exhibit in the local reality.

Emblematic of the difficulties of organizing artistic activities
in this context is Khaled Hourani’s Picasso in Palestine, which
unfolds through the process of organizing the movement of
a Picasso painting from Holland to Palestine. The majority of
Palestinians cannot exit the country and, therefore, cannot
personally access revered works of art.

Questions emerging from the stone:
Raw material for sculpture or for construction? A sculpture in itself, in homage to Land Art?
A piece of the Holy Land, endowed with a sacred aura, suitable for churches or cemeteries?

Context
Historic background the original inhabitants came from 33 villages of the areas of
Ramallah, Hebron, Gaza and Aker.
Comments Not all of the refugee camps of the West Bank were established on land
rented by the UNRWA from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (ref. Agreement between
the government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and UNRWA 14/03/1951).
There are no private rental agreements. When the camps were established, most of
the ground was already declared, while small plots of private land were leased by the
government from local landowners.*

Guidi and Racco are based in Barcelona and are in long-term residency at Hangar (centre for art research and production). They
conduct research in spaces where people have difficulty freely fulfilling simple daily actions.
Guidi and Racco, currently based in Barcelona, operate at the intersection between art and anthropology, investigating complex
contexts of more or less closed structures, i.e. high security prisons, factories, and, most recently, refugee camps. Their practices
looks into the ways individuals or groups of manage their own movement, on a daily basis, through strongly defined systems
which tend to objectify them and even induce forms of self-restraint. Reflecting on unpredictable methods of daily resistance
sparked by a combination of simplicity and ingenuity, they focus on contexts that are considered marginal or exceptional but, in
reality, anticipate more common scenarios.
Together and independently they have participated in exhibitions and festivals and held talks in international contexts, such as
the Faculty of Fine Arts of the city of Porto (P), the University of Barcelona and Escola Massana Barcelona (E), Kunstuniversität Linz (A),
Galerija SIZ Rijeka, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka (HR), Akademie der Künste der Welt Cologne (D), International

Art); Italy (O’, Milan, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice) and Luxemburg (Kulturfabrik Esch-sur-Alzette). They have conducted
workshops in a variety of environments, including universities, prisons and refugee camps.
Currently in residence at Hangar Barcelona (2014-2016), they have collaborated continuously since 2008.
