Welcome Home –
Welcome Here
It is a new year and there are many new changes and
opportunities on the Vermilion Advantage agenda for the next
twelve months. The first change relates to this publication.
The Vermilion Advantage News & Views has historically been
distributed bi-monthly on the last Sunday of the month through
the Commercial News and direct mail to our members. Thanks
to the great partnership with The Commercial-News, we are
now going to be distributing our news monthly. With so many
great things going on in the area, we want to be able to share
the good news and our members’ views on a regular basis.
Other opportunities for additional and broader distribution are
also in the works, so stay tuned to learn where else you will be
able to find our information.
One of the regular features we will be able to greatly
expand is our “Welcome Home, Welcome Here” series. With
so many new folks relocating to our area, along with area
students who are completing their education and training and
returning home to begin their careers, this feature is one of our
favorite components of the publication. We look forward to
making many more introductions through this series throughout
2015.
Another reason we are able to expand our news distribution
is because of some key staffing changes. As of January 1,
Linda Bolton is now serving as our Special Projects Consultant.
Development of stories for the News & Views is one of her key
responsibilities to better utilize her outstanding writing and
storytelling talents.
Other changes to our team include the promotion of Tinisha
Shade to Economic Development Director. Tinisha is working
closely with me and will continue to do so over the next few
months until flying solo in the role by late spring or early
summer.
Lauren Wonderlin is stepping out of at least part of her
Administrative Assistant duties and into the role of Professional
Services Coordinator. During 2014, our Team worked with
over 60 new professional candidates considering and accepting
positions with 19 of our local employers. This trend continues
to grow and so does the demand for our customized community
information and community tours for these relocating families.
Helping our businesses attract and retain the right talent is
critically important. Another new responsibility Lauren will be
assuming is Leadership Tomorrow. Currently a student in Class
27 and under the excellent tutelage of Machelle Dykes, Lauren
will assume the role of facilitator of that program when the new
class year begins in August 2015.
Meanwhile, Machelle Dyke’s responsibilities are changing
and growing, too. While always a key voice in member
assistance and services, she will also be assuming the role of
Career Network Administrator. The new part of her duties is
also an exciting addition to the portfolio of services being
offered to our members and the community by Vermilion
Advantage.
For more than a decade, a partnership between the
Vermilion Vocational Delivery System (VVEDS), DACC and
local high schools, has allowed a career program known as
“Career Cruising” to be available to middle and high school
students throughout Vermilion County. Beginning with the
start of the 2015-2016 school year, a new and exciting addition
to that program will be added through a new partnership
between local businesses, VVEDS and Vermilion Advantage.
This new component is known as “CC Inspire.” Local
businesses will have the opportunity to identify career mentors,
post business profiles and offer schools a variety of services
such as specific classroom speakers, internships, mentors, tours,
apprentice-ships, co-op placements, job fairs and much more
through this inter-active, web-based program. And, what’s
more, this information will be available to participating schools
throughout the entire state of Illinois greatly expanding the
exposure and awareness about local businesses! Machelle will
be overseeing the development and coordination of the local
CC Inspire initiative. We look forward to sharing more
information with you in the months ahead, so stay tuned.

Another change on our local team will be the addition of a
new, part-time Administrative Assistant, Amanda Burch.
Amanda is a resident of Hoopeston and graduate of Hoopeston
High School. She is currently enrolled at DACC. We are
eager to welcome her onto our team.
Finally, in February, we will introduce you to our new
Regional Planning Consultant. This position and service has
been under discussion for the better part of a year and is now
becoming a reality. While this role will not replace the ongoing

economic development and workforce development activities
that are a regular part of our services throughout the county, it
will be focused on strategic and infrastructure planning for the
county and our outlying communities and help bring all in the
county onto a level playing field for project and community
development.
As the saying goes, “Opportunity is what happens when
change meets preparation.” In 2015 we are looking for many
new opportunities!

The Vermilion County Business Hall of Fame this year will
honor a variety of business people ranging from agriculture, to
wastewater treatment, to manufacturing; but all of the
individuals to be honored are tied to a long history of
establishing their businesses and then giving back to serve
others in the Vermilion County community. To be inducted into
the Vermilion County Business Hall of Fame in March are
Doug and Vickie Miller of Miller Farms in Jamaica/Indianola,
the late Jacob Stahl Beck (1921-1992), founder of Danville
Metal Stamping, and John Willard McBride, founder and
owner of ERH Enterprises in Westville.
“We are so pleased with the selections the panel made from
a group of outstanding nominations this year; these individuals
represent a diverse group of business people who all have
shared a love of Vermilion County by investing themselves and
their resources in building the community and enhancing
quality of life while maintaining their successful businesses,”
says Vermilion Advantage CEO/President Vicki Haugen.
Housed on the second floor of the Vermilion County
Museum, the Business Hall of Fame began in 2012, growing
out of a desire on the part of Vermilion Advantage and its
Board of Directors to maintain for history the stories of the
men and women who not only built successful businesses, but
who have or are lending their time, talents, and resources to
improve quality of life in the county. The first inductees in
2012 were Lou and Sybil Mervis of Mervis Industries and
Mervis Foundation, C. Sherman Paxton, who over 100 years
ago founded the Grab It Here grocery chain; Robert “Kish”
2
Bookwalter, an attorney and entrepreneur who drove
construction of Danville Stadium, and “Big Jim” Darby,
founder and owner of Greenwood, Inc, which includes Sunset
Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Trigard, and Trigard
Memorials. 2013 inductees were Henry Clapp, Jr, founder of
Full-fill Industries; the late local surveyor Lowell Loving and
the late developer Art Fleming. In 2014 inductees included
Julius W. Hegeler II, founder of Peterson Filling and Packaging
and the Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation, Fred Faulstich, whose
family founded Faulstich Printing which is now in its 82nd
year of operation, Dick Read, Hoopeston businessman and
community activist, and Vicki Haugen, President/CEO of
Vermilion Advantage.
“The best part of this project is preserving these pieces of
history and reminding all of us how hard it is to build a
successful business, and how special it is when those who do
so also give of themselves to the community,” says Project
Manager Linda Bolton. “I have the best part of this project,
sitting down with the honorees or their families and finding out
about them; these are stories that need to be shared so none of
us ever forget the people who went before us and gave so much
to Vermilion County,” she says.
An induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, March
22nd at the Vermilion County Museum for invited guests. The
Hall of Fame display will then be open to the public during
regular museum hours beginning the week of March 23. The
Business Hall of Fame project is co-sponsored by Vermilion
Advantage, Danville Commercial-News and Neuhoff Media.

Creating Opportunities for Success at
Hoopeston’s DACC Campus
By Linda Bolton
Karla Koon graduated in 1973 in
East Lynn’s last high school class,
thinking she had her future
planned. But just as with so many
of us, things changed along the
journey. Instead of college in
Ohio, she ended up in summer
jobs at the former FMC plant in
Hoopeston that turned into a 27
year career, building corn cutters
and harvesters along with other
related equipment. Along the way
she got her degree, moved up the
chain, got married and eventually
transitioned into a career in supply
chain management as director of
purchasing for Horizon Hobby in
Champaign. A high stress job,
Karla says she found herself
working literally 24/7, until the
birth of her grandchild, when she
found herself re-evaluating life.
She says she knew it was time
for a change and a new direction
for her life. She decided to apply
for the position as director of the new Danville Area Community College campus in
Hoopeston. “I guess the timing was just right; it was a time of new beginnings for
me, for Hoopeston, and for the college,” Koon says.
Since renovation of the DACC campus building concluded with a ribbon cutting
ceremony in September of 2013, she hit the ground running and has literally seen her
life change. “The transition into education has been interesting because things move
at a different pace out in the private sector as opposed to here in education; I have
had to learn to slow down, evaluate how we handle things, and work in conjunction
and partnership with the main campus,” she says.
“The thing that has probably helped me most is that before I was hired I had
signed up to take culinary arts classes and found the process confusing; it is never
easy for adults to either go to higher education for the first time, or to return, and
when I did it, I ran into some barriers and challenges; those have since helped me
have a better understanding of what people go through when they come to college so
I can help them along the way,” Karla says. She adds, “When people come into our
office we are ready to help them move through the process and make it easier for
them; I now know just how important that help can be.”
Koon says the DACC Hoopeston site was at first just an empty building needing
renovation; it then became a building needing furniture and supplies and students,
and it has been fun seeing it fill up with everything from computers to pencil
sharpeners. “We have had great interest in the variety of courses we can offer,
especially those required courses that fill so quickly on the main campus; rather than
having to wait a semester, some students have chosen to take these required courses
up here so they can get them done; we offer options,” Koon says. She notes that
everything they do at the Hoopeston campus is designed to support and compliment
what is offered on the main Danville campus. “We are so fortunate to have so many
wonderful resources on the main campus,” Koon says.
And for Karla Koon, the best part of all is she is doing something she truly loves
in her own community where she can live a more normal life and get involved in
community activities, such as the Strategic Planning Hoopeston Alliance initiative
now underway in Hoopeston. “It is exciting to have all these opportunities for
success in the northen part of the county,” Koon says.

Career Exploration Laboratory
Each month 8th grade students throughout Vermilion
County schedule an annual visit to the Career
Exploration Laboratory. Students are guaranteed to
enjoy the 5-hour program that includes hands-on career
awareness activities using activity-based workstations,
cruising the internet to explore career interests, and
learning about how choices can provide building blocks
to their future. After the students visit, we ask them to
share with us one thing they learned about their future
career.
“One thing I learned today was that I control many
things in my life not just one.” – Jenna
“I learned that you can’t just expect a career and a nice
life to be handed to you. You have to work for it.”
– Makayla
“I learned that if I pick the right choices I can get my
dream job and a salary from $87,000-$125,000.”
– Gabe
“I learned that there are a lot of robts and I thought
they didn’t exist.” – Cedrick
“The healthcare station really interested me, because I
learned how to keep a healthy life.” – Emily
“I learned I can make a lot of money being a heavy
equipment operator.” – Kyle
“I learned that a nurse’s job is never done and also that
I have to go to college for it.” – Bethany
“One thing I learned was that you always should finish
high school and at least think about college even if you
are over 40.” – Tierra
“I learned that I can go to college and high school at
the same time to graduate earlier.” – Spurgeon
“To finish school, do college, study something. Also, I
am who I choose to become. Make use of the time
when I am in school.” – Treveontae
“If you drop out of high school then you won’t make a
lot of money and there won’t be a lot of jobs to choose
from.” – Brea
Julius W. Hegeler II – Helping Others Build Their Futures
With his gift of three million dollars, Julius W. Hegeler
II has invested in the future of countless students at
Danville Area Community College’s Technology
Center. The gift to the college is a planned giving from
his estate, but to make the expansion of the Technology
Center happen now, Hegeler is giving money each year
to offset the loans necessary for the expansion, which
will enhance programming and expand mechantronics,
wind energy, information systems, welding and many
other programs in demand at the college.
The ribbon was cut on the addition, appropriately
named the Julius W. Hegeler II Advanced Technologies
Center, last month. It features a photo tribute to Hegeler
in its entryway, honoring his time as an Air Force
fighter pilot.
When Hegeler was inducted into the Vermilion
County Business Hall of Fame in 2014, it was noted in
his biography that he flew 70 missions during the
By Linda Bolton
Korean War, and was one of four pilots to fly the last
such flight of that war.
Also from his Hall of Fame biography,
Julius Hegeler II is not just a man who hands
someone a check for a project and then walks away.
Ask anyone who has worked with him on countless
projects across the community; he is hands on.
Whether he is sweeping a new Ambucs playground
before it opens, or driving by the construction of the
Garden Gateway, or sitting in his Vermilion Street
home reviewing the plans for the Technology Center
addition, Julius Hegeler is always aware of what he
is giving to and why, as well as caring about the
outcome of the project and who will benefit.
And, … Julius W. Hegeler II has touched thousands
of lives right here in Vermilion County. Most people
4
will never know all that he has given to the
community, but for Julius it is not about recognition.
He simply wants to give back to his community and
to the people who live here; he is paying his good
luck forward. As his daughter Madelle says of her
father, “Julius W. Hegeler II has made the Danville
community a better place for all of us to live, giving
innumerable gifts of time, service, and money to
Vermilion County. He is the epitome of service to
humanity, and this is truly his legacy.”
His generosity will for years to come enable
thousands of Danville Area Community College
students to learn in an enhanced environment using the
latest technology to expand their opportunities to build
their own futures.

Southgate’s New
Habitat/Walking
Trail Is Good
News for
Hundreds on
Danville’s East
Side
By Linda Bolton
Twelve hours driving a semi can mean stiff limbs and
sore eyes. The same can likely be said for someone
sitting at a computer screen for eight hours. Hundreds
of office workers and truck drivers who haul loads in
and out of Danville’s Southgate area have a new place
to clear their heads, relax and refresh in a 16 acre
wildlife Habitat area near Fiberteq. With grant funds,
the city of Danville has developed a three-quarter mile,
fully ADA compliant walking trail around a pond off
Borgen Drive. “Because of the location and the water,
this was already a wildlife area; we just used the grant
dollars to enhance a rough pathway that was already
there to make it easier for people to walk or use their
wheelchairs to enjoy the outdoors,” says the city’s
Superintendent of Parks and Public Property Steve
Lane.
The idea originated about ten years ago, Lane says,
when he was looking for options to reduce the amount
of mowing the city does by planting native prairie
grasses. Lane says it became obvious the area near
Fiberteq could be developed into something very good.
“There was already this path that people had created,
5
walking on their own, and lots of wildlife like herons,
ducks and others in what was a natural refuge,” Lane
says. He says Pheasants Forever stepped up to help with
the plan when he first applied for a recreational trail
grant that was awarded to the city. But work had to be
delayed due to some expansion at Fiberteq. Lane says
he applied again and the city was once again awarded
funding. “We used some of the $86,000 they gave us to
seed some open areas and plant 125 native fruit and
nut-bearing trees and shrubs that will attract birds and
wildlife to the natural refuge area,” Lane says.
JANUARY 2015
V E R M I L I O N
The site is already drawing interest. “A lot of people
work out in the Southgate and Eastgate areas, and as
weather allows, many of them are taking advantage of
the opportunity to get away from their computers or
steering wheels for a look at nature and a chance to take
a walk,” Lane says. The three-quarter mile pathway is
paved and fairly flat according to Lane. “There’s a very
small slope but we designed this so it can be used by
walkers as well as those in wheelchairs,” Lane says.
“This is really a big deal for a county that has a history
of less than good health rankings, especially for
exercise, so as a city, anything we can do to help people
get out and get moving is good for all of us,” Lane
says. He adds that the project is good for residents on
A D V A N T A G E
the East side, as well as workers. “We really don’t have
a lot of developed open space areas like this Habitat
and Trail on the East side of the city so this is good for
everyone,” he says.
Lane says one of the advantages of this project is
that he did not have to add any staff to care for this
area, as the land and refuge will care for itself, and this
is better use of the land, because it enhances what was
already there. “Our department is committed to finding
as many opportunities as possible to create better use of
open space for the public, because it’s good for them
and good for us; they get to be active and instead of
spending our time mowing we are creating open spaces
that benefit the community,” Lane says. He says there
is more he hopes to do in the Southgate
Habitat/Walking Trail area, including maybe someday
building a deck area around the pond so people in
wheelchairs can get closer to the water. “There’s always
more we can do; the challenge is finding how to do
things with limited dollars to improve the quality of life
in our community,” he says.
To find the Southgate Habitat/Walking Trail, take Lynch
Road south under I-74, up over the railroad tracks and
turn left at Borgen Drive. There is a parking lot
available for trail users.

Pastor Sarah Chamberlain
Says Danville Feels Like Home
By Linda Bolton
The best part about being a member of the clergy is
seeing firsthand what God can do in the lives of people,
according to Sarah Chamberlain, who is the Pastor of
Worship and Youth at Danville’s 1st Nazarene Church.
The toughest part, Pastor Sarah says, is not being able to
be everywhere for everyone. “Finding the balance and
not allowing yourself to be stretched too thin is a
common challenge for all of us in the clergy,” she says.
Originally from Kokomo, Indiana, Pastor Sarah has
been here in Danville for a few short years, and is
finally feeling settled. About 12% of clergy in the
United States today are female. About 25% of all the
attorneys in the US are female. So it may be fair to say
that female ministers are still a bit uncommon on the
altars of our churches. But for Sarah Chamberlain her
work as the Associate Pastor of Worship and Youth at
1st Nazarene Church in Danville fits her to a ‘T’. “I felt
the call when I was in high school, when I was
mentored by a great minister; I knew this was what I
needed to do with my life,” Sarah says.
6
Her brother serves a church in Valparaiso Indiana, so
the call has clearly been heard in her family. "My whole
family has always been involved in our church, so it is
part of what we do; we serve," Sarah says. She says she
has been blessed in her career in that she has not faced
opposition to being female in a male-dominated
profession. She believes she brings balance to situations
in the church. And she is a believer that the church
needs to be involved in the community. "We must do
our part to step up and help with issues in the
community," she says. Pastor Sarah likes the community
and its strong arts connections; she says she feels
comfortable here with her family. "There is always an
adjustment but we have such a wonderful church and
everyone made us welcome," she says.

The Start of Something Big for
Vermilion County’s Kickapoo Rail Trail
The longtime dream of building a 24 and ½ mile
Kickapoo Rail Trail from Kickapoo Park to Urbana is
growing closer to reality. Fundraising is well underway,
with the help of grants, sponsors, and donors from
across the two counties stepping up to ensure the
walking and biking trail becomes reality. “Since
October, we have seen over $27,000 come in to make
the project happen, so we are very excited,” says one of
the organizers of the Vermilion County side of the
Rail/Trail project, Doug Ireland. The trail, which will
be built along an historic, abandoned rail track
constructed back in 1869 that runs roughly parallel to
Route 150, has been a dream of organizers for 20 years.
Just recently, there has been resurgence in interest in
the project and a new commitment to make it happen.
Within the last couple of years, the land was obtained
and plans put in place to make the dream come true.
“People who bike and run and walk and truly enjoy the
outdoors drive for miles to use rail/trails,” Ireland says,
so the project is expected to draw not only from the
immediate area but from across the region and even the
nation. The trail begins at Kickapoo and will cross the
old railroad trestle bridge west of Danville. “We expect
lots of people will want to experience that 100 feet in
the air view across the Middlefork and beyond, so we
think the entire trail will be a strong draw for people to
visit and enjoy,” Ireland says. Total
To move fundraising even farther along, Ireland and
others are organizing a Kickapoo Rail Trail Duathlon
for August 1st. “This is going to be a big event, with
lots of people coming in to not only enjoy the activities
but to support the rail/trail project,” he says. The
duathlon running events will be inside Kickapoo, with
biking events heading off to the west toward the
Collison and Newtown areas, before returning to the
park. Ireland says organizers are still looking for
sponsors for the duathlon, and anyone interested can
call him at Cycles Plus at 217-442-3214.
By Linda Bolton
The event’s early registration opens February 15th
for the 5K competitive event (a 26 mile biking and
running event), for the 18 mile fun 5K run/bike event,
and for the two person bike/run relay. “We think people
are really going to enjoy that one, because if you can
bike but not run, you pair up with another person who
can, and vice versa, so more people can participate,”
Ireland says.
Early registration will be $30 for the fun run, $45
for the competitive event, and $20 for the two person
relay. On February 15, early registration will be
available at www.active.com, or you can contact Cycles
Plus at 217-442-3214. You can get more information by
going to [email protected].
“This really could be the start of something big; if
things go as we plan, lots of people will come to the
event and it will likely become something we host
every year, so we are excited,” Ireland says.

Welcome Home – Welcome Here
Music in the Air
Lights! Music! Action! That’s every day in the life of a
high school music director. Adam Johnson knows all
about the frantic pace that consumes high school music
programs. While he is still relatively fresh out of
college with a degree from Indiana University’s School
of Music, he is well into his second season of show
choir at Danville High School – arguably one of the
most demanding of music programs at the high school
level. Show choir means one performance competition
after another during the spring semester. The
competition is intense and it is demanding. It requires
everyone to be “on their game” for every performance,
ensuring the right notes are hit with the right level of
emotion and every choreographed dance step is on
point while the carefully chosen costumes reflect the
music being performed. So Adam finds himself at this
time of year trying to help keep his students on track
while they study, rehearse, travel, compete, perform,
eat, rest and try to stay fresh. In his spare time, he is
usually trying to make sure he eats right, gets enough
rest himself and gets in a little yoga time to help keep
him grounded. Johnson is responsible for show choirs
Delegation and Contemporaires, as well as Madrigals
and teaching a music theory class.
“Last year was my first, so every day was a
learning experience and I felt I was stumbling through
everything trying to learn how everything should flow;
this year I have a better feel for things and I seem to be
able to put the pieces together better,” Adam says. And
there are lots of pieces to be assembled for all the
performing music groups at Danville High. “We just
came off a busy holiday schedule, with the annual
Madrigals season, and then the Delegation performing
with the Danville Symphony, as well as some of our
kids doing the Beef House Christmas productions, so it
was good to have a little break before jumping into
show choir activity,” he says. He is excited about the
competition program this year. “I felt like I did not do
them justice in picking material last year because I
didn’t know their voices well enough yet, but this year
I have a better feel for them and what music pieces
they can do a really good job with,” Adam says.
By Linda Bolton
Adam Johnson grew up in a great, but admittedly
tone deaf family in Carmel, Indiana. “No one really
understands how it happened that music is the center of
my life and everyone else in my family can’t carry a
tune – not even ‘Happy Birthday’,” he jokes. He says
he just always knew music was his thing. “When I was
young, I loved to sit in my room and listen to all kinds
of music and think about directing,” he says. Adam
actually considered going into performing himself,
“But when I did my student teaching I realized that
teaching was what I really wanted to do, and frankly,
performing seemed a little self-focused when by
teaching I could share so much more with my
students," he says.
Adam says not every student who walks into his
office has the best voice, but he has no problem with
8
working with students to find their best range and
making sure they are placed near other students who
have stronger voices. “Everyone has potential; it’s just
a matter of tapping into that and helping the student
feel secure while he or she grows,” he says.
Adam is pleased with the fundamental values and
work ethic that music programs help students develop,
as well as how the music helps students connect. “I feel
we are all losing our connectivity, but I believe
performing re-connects the performers and their
audiences, because the performers are sharing
themselves with each other and with the audience,"
Adam says.
Adam says the intense competition in show choir
can be a good teacher for students who learn work
ethics and responsibility. And while the Delegation may
not win every time it performs, that reality helps them
learn, also. “It’s not about focusing on failure; it’s about
celebrating these situations as learning opportunities,”
he says.
When asked what music he enjoys listening to, he
says his music tastes tend to be very eclectic. “I truly
like about anything, although the lyrics are always very
important to me,” he says. And when pressed, just as
any parent of more than one child will tell you, he has
no real favorites in his music programs, “Really, I
enjoy all of our performing groups, but if I had a
favorite, it likely would be Madrigals because they are
centered on music in its purest form,” he reluctantly
admits.
It may still be early in Adam Johnson’s teaching
career, but make no mistake. He is very clear about the
kind of teacher he wants to be. “I want to be the
teacher who helps students develop fundamental values
and ethics and the one with the office and classroom
where kids can come to be heard, a place they feel is a
safe space for them,” Johnson says. Johnson says he is
developing friends now at DHS and feeling more
settled. “I really like it here and this job is everything I
wanted,” he says.
