RCLS Legislative Breakfast Displays
Dan Hulse, RCLS Development Officer
The RCLS Legislative Breakfast and Annual Meeting will
be held on Friday, September 18 at the Mt. Fuji Restaurant
in Hillburn, NY.
The legislators have been impressed in the past with the
varied displays showing programs and services that member
libraries provide their patrons. We are again asking for your
help in presenting fabulous visual displays of how funding
for libraries benefits the communities throughout the RCLS
service area. Let your imagination run wild, put those
artistic and collage skills to good use. Go through your
photos and look for ones that show all ages having fun at
your library. Have a photo of a county and/or state legislator
presenting your library with funding? Make sure to include
it. Have a model of future expansion or
renovations that you could bring along? Please
do so. If you would like to bring handouts to
put on the tables, that is another option. Show
legislators that libraries offer the public much
more than they did 10 or 20 years ago.
Displays can be on either poster board with
an easel backing or inside a Lucite display
holder. Make sure your library’s name and
location are prominently noted on the display.
If you will be attending the breakfast, please
bring the display early that morning, but let
Dan Hulse (ext. 245 or e-mail) know that you
will do so. You will also be required to take the
display with you when you leave that morning.
If you or a representative will not be able to
attend, please drop off the display at the
System no later than Wednesday,
September 16. If you have any questions,
please contact Dan. Thank you and we look
forward to seeing your displays!
Register for this event electronically via the
RCLS online calendar.

Best Small Library in America 2015
With just six staff members serving a community of
12,700 outside of Bozeman, MT, the Belgrade Community
Library won this year’s Library Journal Best
AUG
Small Library in America Award. This award,
cosponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, was created in 2005 to encourage
and showcase the exemplary work of libraries serving
populations under 25,000. What is Belgrade’s secret awardwinning sauce? With a robust volunteer base, they have
reimagined library services and aggressively developed new
outreach efforts to meet the community’s changing needs.
The result is intense engagement and support from the
community and an impact beyond Belgrade’s borders
through leadership to small libraries throughout the state.
Learn how to replicate and adapt Belgrade’s ambitious
outreach efforts on a small-library budget.
The Best Small Library in America 2015 webinar is
hosted in collaboration with the Association for Rural and
Small Libraries and Library Journal, and will include an
overview of the nomination process and details for next
year’s award. Deadline for submitting a nomination is
Wednesday, September 9.
This free, 60-minute webinar takes place Tuesday,
August 18 starting at 2 p.m. To register or for more
information, visit the WebJunction website.

RCLS Directory
The Summer edition of the RCLS 2015 Directory is now
online. Library staffers can print their own copies from the
PDF file. The directory is a valuable
source of information for RCLS staff,
the staff and trustees at member
libraries, legislators and other people
who work with our libraries. The
directory provides member libraries’
hours, contact information, board
meeting times, legislative districts and
more information.
We appreciate the Directors’ time and efforts in helping
make the Directory a valuable communication tool.
Please send new updates for the next revision to Ruth
Daubenspeck by Friday, September 25.
You Are Invited

the services offered to member libraries.

International Games Day @ your

sort of game-related activity in or
around your library, on or around
t he offi ci al dat e, S atu rd ay,
November 21. That’s it! The games
can be videogames on a library
console, tabletop games, social games,
party games – whatever you think will
work for your individual library and
community.
To register, complete the form on
the International Games Day website.
Early registrants can choose corporate
donated games and also sign up for
some international inter-library events
that will give your community the
chance to connect to other library
communities in other parts of the
world.
This is a world-wide event, with
libraries on ALL SEVEN continents

Antarctica! How’s that for a great way
to spark conversations about the
importance, power and ubiquity of
libraries?
The International Games Day blog

discussion, and of course learning
around games and play, and a great
press kit with posters and materials to
help you promote the day in your
