Here are your official results from the 2016 HIBT,
Kona, Hawaii
Malibu Marlin Club won the 2016 Hawaiian
International Billfish Tournament, a decade after
their first HIBT win in 2006. Malibu Marlin Club put
their points on the scoreboard and, while other teams
were close, they sealed the win when the reel sounded

and Angler Stephen Chow.
Lights captained by Oskie Rice (more on Captain Oskie
later!). Veteran angler Buzz Colton fought an estimated 150-pound Pacific blue marlin in just 15
minutes before tagging and releasing the fish. This tag gave Malibu Marlin Club an additional
300 points, securing the 57th Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Governor's
Trophy for first place.
"It's a lot of fun to come to Kona and fish this
tournament. I have longstanding ties to Hawaii,
and have been coming to Kona to fish since I was
a youngster. My father first fished the first tournament
in 1959 with Peter Fithian, and it's a testament to
this great man who has been running this tournament
so well for 57 years," said Buzz Colton of Malibu

Australia's Redcliffe Peninsula Game Fishing Club moved up the leaderboard to hook a second
place finish with 902.6 points. Third place was settled by count back or first to get to the points,
and went to Old South Marlin Club - International with 900 points.

Northern Lights Tops Charter Boat Standings Captain Oskie Rice of the Northern Lights
will be added to the coveted list of Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Henry Chee
Award recipients earning 1300 points. The perpetual Henry Chee Award was established in
1965 to honor the charter boat captain upon whose vessel the most number of billfish points
have been scored at HIBT. The award's namesake, a pioneer fishing captain who set an unprecedented number of gamefish catch records, helped establish the Kona coast as a world-famous
fishing destination.
This is a first Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Henry Chee Award win for Rice
although this captain comes from a long line of Kona fisherman including his grandfather

Silky's Captain John Bagwell took second by count back earning 900 points and Northern H
Lights II Captain Kevin Nakamaru earning 900 points took third.

abor Day weekend is the biggest race of the year in Hawaii. Some 35+ boats from both
Oahu and Maui will participate in the ever popular Lahaina Return. Lahaina Yacht Club’s
last race of their summer series will take place on Saturday. Lahaina Lights is open to both
visiting yachts and Maui yachts and scoring is done for all boats participating to find the
winners of the Lights and a separate result for the Maui boats to derive who won their
summer series.
All the club’s members play for their respective Maui or Oahu teams in the annual softball

match on Sunday and the winner takes home the softball trophy. LYC plays host to the Oahu
clubs for this spectacular weekend and the Oahu clubs truly appreciate the aloha.
Waikiki Yacht Club held the Duke Kahanamoku Race was held on August 14th. Six boats entered the combined
A&B class and two boats in the X class. Good winds held for the three race regatta, results were:

Bruce Olsten reports about the Dinsmoor Regatta held by Lahaina Yacht Club on August 13th and 14th.
The concluding day of the regatta was bright and sunny and the races got off to a start in a very welcome
sea-breeze. The junior sailors battled it out in their three divisions and there was some real spirited racing, with
good strategies playing out, and lots of opportunities for boat on boat tactics. The winds diminished as the races
progressed and the fleet called it quits after four races. Ironically, once the fleet headed into shore, the sea breeze
returned with the best breezes of the weekend. But if you are the glass-is-half-full type, I suppose you could say
that the cool breeze was a blessing for the sailors, coaches, and families to wash down the boats, and pack them
up with all the gear on the normally blazing hot tarmac. Once all was put away, everyone headed to Lahaina
Yacht Club for dinner and the awards ceremony. It was a great weekend of racing and camaraderie for all
involved.
Trophies were awarded for all three divisions. Out of those three divisions, the sailor with the BEST overall score
has their name added to the Keith Dinsmoor Perpetual Trophy which will be displayed in the LYC clubhouse in
perpetuity. Pictures of all first place winners plus the Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta overall winner for 2016.

Last month both the Vic Maui and Pacific Cup were held. Pacific Cup reports that strong winds propelled Manouch
Moshayedi’s super maxi Rio 100 across the Pacific to set a new Pacific Cup Fastest Passage record. They set the
elapsed time record and had fastest passage with an elapsed time of 5d 02:41:14. They crossed the finish line on 20
