by John Oglesby
I
went out to my barn yesterday to survey the M3 and started thinking about the track season for 2011. My yard is still covered in
snow here in Harvard on the eastern edge of the Worcester Hills,
and the road back to the barn is impassable. But spring is in the air so
a day at the race track can’t be far behind. It’s a good time to reflect
on BMW’s 2011 racing prognosis and where we all stand. It is a new
beginning and everything is looking positive.
BMW has changed their approach to racing over the last two years
and has gone back much closer to its roots. No Formula 1, no endurance prototypes and no factory WTCC team. BMW has moved back
to privateer “factory” teams like the old AC Schnitzer days of the
E30M3 with Bobby Rahal in ALMS, independent teams in BTCC and
WTCC and the prospects of a new effort in DTM next year. Let’s all
hope that Bobby can expand on the success of last year and capture
a title for BMW in ALMS. BMW didn’t capture a championship any
significant racing series in 2010 and I think the pressure will be on
the team to bring one home this year. I personally believe that the
move back to touring cars is the right place for BMW to concentrate
its resources and it will pay off in car sales. It really looks more like
a return to the past touring car days of BMW. This is a decision that
works well for promoting the marque by making it relate to the current production cars.
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the current production car
line-up. I keep hoping that BMW will make a car that generates the
same passion as the E30 M3, but I guess genre defining designs only
happen once in a great while. I continue to strive to find the modern
equivalent, but so far it hasn’t happened. I read the magazines and
peruse the road tests looking for the “right stuff” and I have often
thought I found it only to be disappointed when I took the car out for
a drive. Although I have to admit that I may be getting warm – but
I’ll leave that story for another day.
I am looking forward to getting the car up on the jack stands and
changing the fluids and checking the brakes, suspension and engine
support systems. There is something about the process that renews
the spirit and prepares you mentally for the new year, driving familiar, but somehow new tracks and renewing old friendships. To me
this is what the BMWCCA is all about. It’s a connection to the broad
range of experiences, teaching new drivers how to feel the passion
and the shared experience with your friends. It is truly something
special. I look forward to seeing you there.
Till next month ... Until next month, Stay on Track! ♦

I
f you have ever wanted to try the BMW Driving School
with your spouse or friend, this is the trip for you. This
summer Trip, offered exclusively to BMW CCA members,
offers a premium full-day driving program at the BMW Performance Center near Greenville, South Carolina, as well as
mountain drives through the beautiful foothills of the Blue

Professional instruction
At the BMW Performance Center, BMW’s own professional
teachers, all of whom have extensive racing experience, will
provide instruction on their challenging track. To program
helps improve your skills in adverse situations such as accident avoidance and inclement weather conditions. You will
sharpen your driving skills with several BMW models, such as
the M3, 335i, 550i, and X5, and will come to fully appreciate the
“ultimate” BMW driving experience.
Explore the Blue Ridge Mountains in a BMW
On the second day of the Program, we will put our skills to the
test driving through the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains, just outside of Greenville, and enjoy the vistas and
beauty of the Carolinas. Nothing is as rewarding as putting
your new-found driving skills to the test on the twisted mountain roads surrounded by the natural beauty of summertime in
the Carolinas.
Summer is an ideal time for enjoying an outdoor summer
concert while relaxing with friends by the waterfalls of the
Ready River in downtown Greenville. You will have the opportunity to socialize with the other BMW CCA club members at

Welcome Members!
My BMW CCA Story
About 4 years ago, my friend Mark
and I became members of the Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA. At the time, Mark had
just purchased a 2007 Audi RS4, and I was driving a 2003
Infiniti G35 Coupe 6MT. The Infiniti was a purchase I
made to appease my wife, but one that I regretted 80
miles after leaving the sales lot. Mark knew me as the
BMW guy, and I knew him as the Audi guy. The G35
Coupe purchase was my 15 month mistake. (I won’t
elaborate here, as it isn’t the place). Mark was eager
to test the limits of his car and to have a wingman for
the autocross events held by the Boston Chapter. Prior
to that time, I had known about the BMW CCA, but I
assumed (incorrectly) that it was simply a magazine
subscription about BMWs and was unsure how it connected with autocross. In any case, I figured – it was
a cheap membership, so why not give it a go. I already
had a membership at F1Boston, and the G35 never did
get driven spiritedly.
by Eric Kaul, Membership Chair
And so I joined the club and prepared to attend my
first event. The event was an April autocross, and to cut
to the chase, I finally found an opportunity to share my
passion for driving with other like minded individuals. At the time, I was already searching for my next
BMW: either a 1999 E36 M3 or a 2003 E39 540i6 with low
miles. After the day was over and having had numerous conversations with other BMW enthusiasts – I had
decided to get an E39 M5. That is how my BMW CCA
story started.
My BMW Story
My BMW story on the other hand, began in April of
1993. I remember it as if was yesterday. My dad had
returned home from his weekly trip to Austin, TX, and
he announced that he had found his next car. We had
a strong feeling it would be either a Mercedes Benz
300TD wagon or Volvo 740 wagon, but to our amazement, it was an E30 325is. As it turns out, his colleague
Jim had picked him up earlier in the week from the
airport in what appeared to be a small two door coupe
in museum quality condition. For Dad, it was love at
first sight. As it happens, within the first 10 minutes of
riding in the car, Jim mentioned that he wasn’t driving it as much anymore and that he was considering
selling it. At which point, my father replied, “SOLD!”
Jim didn’t understand the comment – so my Dad said
it again, “SOLD!” Before the 45 minutes car trip was
over, my dad had written a blank check to Jim, told
him to write in whatever amount he desired and left it
in the glovebox. Jim delivered the car to us on June 6th,
1993 for $10,400 with 28,993 miles on the clock. Prior to
handing the keys to us, Jim mentioned that the drive
from Austin, TX to Ridgefield, CT with his wife was the
best time they ever had in the car and that they were regretful to give the car up so easily. That car eventually
became my car, and after selling the car ten years later
for $1,500, I realized instantly the regret Jim had felt.
In any case, these are two of my BMW stories, but
I’d rather hear from you! What’s your BMW story
and how were you introduced to the BMW Car Club
of America? If I can tell you one thing I have learned
about our members in the past four years, it’s that everyone has more than one BMW story, and everyone
wants to share! BMW CCA was founded so people like
us have a place to make friends that have a passion for
our cars and have stories to share. As far as I know,
that goal hasn’t changed! So, send your story to me at
[email protected] or pull me aside at one
of our Boston chapter events! I’ll be all ears! ♦ www.boston-bmwcca.org | 9

No Ducks at Ducks to Wine Fun Rally: Just Fun!
by Marcy Venezia
S
hucks, no ducks! Eduardo McIntosh called this the
Ducks to Wine Fun Rally, but the ducks were really
geese. Perhaps Eduardo thinks geese are ducks or
maybe in Cuban the word for geese is duck. Needless
to say, they were geese, but they did not attack us this
time. And now that you are totally confused let’s slip in
the weather … the fog lifted and the clouds separated
as if the hand of god was helping out and we had a
lovely morning.
All makes and models
You might expect only BMWs but some participants
resorted to Audi, Porche and a 5 Speed V8 Canadian
Cadillac as their mode of transportation. We forgave
them since their clubs are not as much fun. The 46 participants came from New Hampshire, Rhode Island and
Massachusetts.
A challenging course & questions
The participants ran a challenging intricate set of directions and questions. You had to laugh when you saw
your competitors driving in the opposite direction on
Sunday. The ride took us through Weston, Lincoln,
Sudbury, Historic Concord, Assabet Valley and great
towns like Maynard, Bolton and a delicious lunch in
Clinton. There were a couple of difficult questions like
the red barn was called the “Black Cat Barn,” counting
the mailboxes (there were 14) or the “Made to Order
“picnic tables. I guess if you prop a picnic table against
a tree you expect it can’t be handmade.
One of the questions was “What can you do at the
Bartlett Airfield?” Seems simple enough but many
could not find the airfield even though they drove right
Above: Participants lined up for the start of the Ducks to Wine Fun
Rally. A cloudy sky cleared the participants saw plenty of sites,
except no ducks ... just geese!

next to it and the wind sock was a dead giveaway. Most
people didn’t imagine shrinking the airport a 100 times
and flying model airplanes. Go figure.
Then there was The denomination of St Mary’s
Church. You would never guess where they were from.
Finally when asked, “How many stars on the road?”
People looked up. Ahhh ... it was a street sign. Yep,
7 Star lane! It was such an interesting route winding
through back roads that you just wanted to block it off
and have a driving school. The questions were interesting and varied if we might say so ourselves.
We had to hold Eduardo back from jumping in his car
and driving the route and answering the questions. After
fourteen cars had left he jumped into Laura Chismudy’s
new, I mean brand new (700 miles), Brilliant Red 135c
BMW. That was the last we saw of them until lunch.
Eduardo enjoyed driving for her and was able to see
firsthand how the route was for participants.
Great food with good friends
We had lunch at Ristorante Via Alto 27 (www.ristoranteviaalto27.com) on High St. in Clinton. Christina,
the owner is from Rome and started the Ristorante 3
years ago. Via Alto 27 is not normally open on Sundays
but she opened it for us. Our private party had delicious entrees and the desserts were amazing desserts.
We were all surprised to find such fine dining in Clinton with such upscale ambience.
If you are still wondering about St. Mary’s the answer is Indian Orthodox. And finally ... the results ...
drum roll, please! Third place winners were Diane Wilhelm & Friend. Second place went to Garo Toomajanian
& William Harding, and first place went to Ron Hettich
and his wife. All the winners received Panera Bread gift
certificates.
So you see, we had a great time and hope to see you
next spring when we organize another Fun Rally! ♦

Quarterly meeting at BMW Peabody draws a huge crowd
– story by John Sullivan – photos by Neil Halin
M
ore than 100 members attended the Boston Chapter’s fourth quarter general meeting held Dec. 8,
2010 at BMW of Peabody’s M-Center building.
The M-Center is located beside the original BMW Peabody facility at 221 Andover St.
Special thanks to our hosts
Rob Hannafin the Service Manager was our liaison for
the meeting and did a great job accommodating our
requests, especially the sound system (you had to hear
the roar of the engines)! Lori Connolly their Marketing
Manager also arranged the catering of the
delicious food that was provided by BMW
of Peabody. Rob & Lori also rearranged the
decorations in the building to accommodate
the video projector focusing on one of the
walls. There were enough chairs and food
to seat and feed the more than one hundred
members that attended.
Jack Woods the Parts Manager had offered
a 25% discount on BMW Parts for that evening only. Jack also kindly extended the 25%
discount to online purchase until the end of
December 2010. Many thanks go to Marshall
Cabot the GM at BMW of Peabody for his support of the
meeting. Thanks to Dan Mull, Eric Kaul and Neil Halin
for their photography skills.
The BMW Performance Center & more
The speaker for the evening was Mike Renner Director
of the BMW Performance Center in Greer SC. The audience was deeply involved in Mike’s presentation (many
thanks to Neil Halin for his tech support navigating the
proper screens of the presentation). There was a lively
question and answer session after Mike’s presentation
on driving dynamics.
Jackie Bechek who organizes the Chapter’s Women’s
Only Driving School at the Performance Center and a
member of the Boston Chapter Activities Committee,
raffled off a bunch of Performance Center hats and lanyards. She also mentioned the possibility of a trip to
Germany in 2012 to tour Europe and drive the Nurnberg Ring. Eric Kaul Membership Chair had a nicely
decorated Ballot Box for members who voted for our
Chapter Officers.
Performance Center prize winner named
Our speaker had surprised us in the planning stages
of the meeting by offering to provide a complimentary
two day M-School
— driving M3’s,
M5’s and M6’s —
as our door prize.
The package also
included the winner’s lodging, meals and an M-Helmet and M-Style
Jacket. All the winner was required to do is cover
travel expenses to Greenville, SC. Obviously, this got
people excited!
Each participant was allowed to enter their name in
the drawing the night of the event, and the lucky winner was Dan Polagruto of Bolton, MA who is a Boston
Chapter member and the proud owner of an M3. I am
sure he will enjoy his time at the BMW Performance
Center’s M-School. The Chapter thanks Mike Renner
of the Performance Center for his generous gift to a
Chapter member! ♦

Top 100 Things to Do Before You Die
- Photos by Nayden Naydenov
I
just checked a few lists of the top 100 things to do before you die and found
out that autocrossing was not on any of them. What a blatant omission!
Bungee rope jumping, running from the bulls, fiestas involving weekendlong tomato fights, climbing Mount Fuji, skydiving are all on the list but not
driving one autocross event? Sorry to say, but I feel that your life could be
truly wasted if you never try autocrossing!
Just ask any of the 300+ drivers who attended our autocross events last year. Many of them have discovered
that ALL 100 things to do before you die should involve performance driving of some sort and preferably
an autocross. Many even spent thousands of dollars
modifying their cars to get a better shot at winning their
class and earn that highly-coveted twenty-dollar trophy! Those are the true driving enthusiasts and they
(we) will pawn off our kids and postpone leaky roof
repairs to get that coilover suspension. This is how we
get our names engraved forever in the autocross annals
and earn eternal respect and glory. Our grand kids will
proudly tell their own grand kids bedtime stories about
their great-great grandfathers and grandmothers earning that precious autocross trophy and show our proud
ancestors pictures of us driving something that used to
be known as an automobile centuries ago.
So without further ado, here is the list of those drivers who earned this historic honor in 2010:
Above: A helmet and car wait patiently during Boston Chapter BMW
CCA Autocrossing in 2010. Everything in good time.
Class AR:
BMWs on race tires
1st Nick DeRosa . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘95 BMW M3
Nick’s driving saw huge all-around improvement in
2010. He was also very competitive in track event time
trials, posting some impressive times at NHMS and
Watkins Glen. Nick was having so much fun at autocross that he decided to sacrifice some of his run times
in order to drive the same course element twice (once
sideways and once backwards). We nearly sent one
of the bigger tow vehicles to get him off the course so
other drivers could have some fun too!
Class AS:
Top BMWs on street tires
1st Matt Shoop . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2nd Jonathan Cowen. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3rd Mark Schnoerr. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4th Sigrid Schnoerr . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
‘97 BMW M3
‘98 BMW M3
‘96 BMW M3
‘96 BMW M3
This class was the most competitive by far, evidenced
14 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2011
by the fact that all top 4 ranked drivers won at least
one event and that was with all 4 of them attending the
event. It all came down to the wire and Matt Shoop
sealed the deal on one of his last runs of the season.
Past winner and perennial class contender Mark Schnoerr exhausted all legal options to lighten his car, so he
put himself on a strict diet and dropped 30 lbs. of body
weight. To no avail, though - his wife Sigrid won her
first event beating Mark in his own car. The day Sigrid
beat Mark has been declared a special holiday in the
Schnoerr family and will be celebrated with extravagant festivities from here on.
Class BS:
Wannabe top BMWs on street tires
1st Christo Tinkov . . . . . . . . . ‘08 BMW Z4 M Coupe
2nd Mike Iannotti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘08 BMW 135i
3rd David Arustamian . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘04 BMW M3
4th Ruslana Tsurikova. . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘10 BMW 135i
Unlike class AS where the top 5 cars were all E36 M3s, 4
of the top 5 cars in class BS were vastly different. That’s
right: class “BS” is no “B.S.”! When all the dust settled,
Yours Truly took the class by a slim margin. Mike Iannotti came very close to forcing a final round face-off
but a cone hit on his best Event 6 run cost him that opportunity. I think that single cone hit improved my life
expectancy by a few years. Thanks Mike!
Class CS:
Mid-range BMWs on street tires
1st Mark Dudek . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘06 BMW Z4 3.0i
2nd Krystian Macek . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘04 BMW M3
3rd Chris Duane . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘04 BMW 330i ZHP
4th Daniel Armendariz . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘09 BMW 135i
After missing Event 1 and losing to Krystian Macek
in Event 2, Mark Dudek seemed to be on the ropes.
He not only recovered but proceeded to win convincingly the last 4 events of the season and claim the top
prize in class CS. This is only Mark’s first full autocross season and his incredible progress earned him
the Most Improved Driver of 2010. Drivers in higher
classes beware!
Class DS:
Armed & Dangerous BMWs on street tires
1st Andrew Kessel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘00 BMW Z3 2.8
2nd Ralph Zajac . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘01 BMW 330Ci
3rd Richard Lewis . . . . . ‘94 BMW 325is M-Technic
Andrew Kessel drove brilliantly and consistently well,
earning the top trophy in class DS, as well as the Driver
of the Year trophy. We think that if Andrew runs for office, he will run as unopposed as he was in his autocross
class! His times were usually better than the higher CS
class and often challenged the fastest cars two levels up
in class BS. Our course designer Ralph
Zajac also had a great season and earned
his highest placement in recent years.
Class ES:
Mostly unarmed but still dangerous BMWs on street tires
1st Mark Chambers . . . . ‘00 BMW 328Ci
2nd Scott Baston . . . . . . . ‘00 BMW 328i
3rd Claude Clerc . . . . . . ‘07 BMW 328xi
4th Alex Henry . . . . . . . . ‘92 BMW 525i
Mark Chambers was not just one of the
most popular worker bosses. He was also
the boss of class ES. He won all 7 regular season events by a convincing margin

and was one of

Scoring Chief of any driving club Scott Baston! After
some events, Scott managed to drive back home, process the event results and post them online before we
had finished our drinks at J.P. O’Hanlon’s!
Class G:
Stock SCCA cars on street tires
1st Bryan Hartling . . . . . . ‘09 Subaru Impreza WRX
2nd Nikolay Nemchuk . . . . ‘09 Subaru WRX Wagon
The top two trophies in SCCA class G went to Subaru
WRXs. After autocrossing a Camaro for years, driving
the WRX was as easy as a walk in the park for Bryan
Hartling who put in a very consistent performance
throughout the season.
Class H:
Stock SCCA cars on race tires
1st Eric Chiang . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘95 Mazda Miata
2nd William Brundige . . . . . . . . . . . ‘95 Mazda Miata
3rd Scott Thursby . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘95 Mazda Miata
Quick: what do a Porsche 997, a Lotus Elise, a Chevy
16 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2011
Corvette Z06, and a Porsche Boxster have in common? Well, none of them could beat the top 4
Mazda Miatas in the class. Such is the power
of well set up lightweight momentum cars at the autocross. Eric Chiang had a great finish to the season,
winning the last 4 events and the class trophy. He also
won a podium at the SCCA Nationals in 2010!
Class I:
Souped up SCCA cars on street tires
1st James Woodburn . . . . . . . . . . . . ‘03 Toyota MR2
James Woodburn won his first 4 events of the season
and the top trophy in the class! His well-driven Toyota
MR2 prevailed over the very cool-looking ‘79 Triumph
Dolomite Sprint and ‘73 Alfa Romeo GTV.
Class J:
Souped up SCCA cars on race tires
1st Charles Moss . . . . . . . ‘95 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
2nd Michael Condict .‘03 Mitsubishi Evolution VIII
3rd Stephen Lefebvre . . . . . . . . . ‘07 Porsche GT3 RS
Class J was the fastest class of the series, earning FTD
at nearly every event. Mike Condict won the first event
for the season but then Charles Moss showed up and
spoiled everyone’s hopes in the class. You could say
that Charles’s Eagle Talon has a very efficient lifestyle:
only run when you have to or when you can. Souped
up to just this side of spontaneous combustion, often
producing more smoke than Cheech and Chong ever
could, the Eagle Talon would only allow a few runs
a day. Charles made the most of them and he is the
worthy winner of the fastest class in the series. Mike
Condict and Stephen “Scruffy” Lefebvre continued to
make notable progress this year, which all bodes well
for another competitive class next year.
Class I:
SCCA mid-level modifications on race tires
1st Robert MacAlpine . . . . . . . . . . . ‘92 Mazda Miata
2nd Scott Courtemanche . . . . . . . . . ‘05 Honda S2000
Class I saw 5 different winners over 7 regular season
events. When all the smoke lifted, our course designer
Robert MacAlpine was left standing with the class trophy in hand.
Class M:
SCCA modified
1st Donald Fitzgerald . . . . . . . ‘01 Campagna T-Rex
Don Fitzgerald and Mike Banas traded first place in
class every single event and went into the Event 7 finale
tied, only to lose against a mean Jeep Grand Cherokee
lowered to sports car height and fitted with wide r-comp
tires. Courtesy of beating Mike in the final event, Don
prevailed in the class. In case you are wondering what
the heck a Campagna T-Rex is, best way to describe it
is an Ariel Atom with only one tire in the back. I had an
opportunity to drive one at our autocross schools and
it was exhilarating. Once you figure out how to get in
and out without contorting your body like a Cirque du
Soleil acrobat, you just have to remember to keep your
arms inside the cage so they don’t get caught in the
wheel next to you. And because you sit literally at cone
height, the cones look huge and downright intimidating as you approach them. Every time I was about to
hit one, my first reaction was to duck, except you can’t
really move inside the cage. The Campagna T-Rex is as
raw as a tartar steak!
Autocross Awards Party
We had our very first autocross-only party and award
ceremony at the Bell-in-Hand in Boston this year. We
filled up to the brim one of the second-floor rooms of
America’s oldest continuously operating pub. Many
drinks were consumed, undoubtedly to help us hear
each other over the dance music next door. The turnout
was great and we would love to stick with this format

for next year’s party. We will be looking for an establishment that may not be as historically significant
but offers easier parking, abundant food and cheaper
drinks, so we’re open to suggestions! And before we
get to the next party, we have another season of driving,
which will kick off with an autocross school on April
17. The calendar for 2011 is finalized and updated on
the Chapter website. It is also on the Ultimate Calendar
in this issue on page 5. We hope to see everyone back
on the runways ready to enjoy the best-kept secret on
the top 100 things to do in your lifetime! ♦

many people do we have here that are novices, that is, first year autocrossers?
How many first-timers?” Some raise their hands slowly and timidly. Some
unabashedly. The man is Larry Nicklas and the sock is a microphone inside a helmet bag. (“We don’t need no stinking windscreens.”) We are at the 4 th auto-cross
event of 2010 for the Boston chapter of the BMW CCA.
Editor’s Note: This is the

some of the premier track activities in the U.S. At social
events we often hear from
people who have always wanted to try one, but have been
a little reluctant. Through
this series, we hope you’ll get
some insight into autocross
that will encourage you to get
involved in one of our many
track events.
18 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2011
What was I thinking?
Looking back, I still don’t know exactly how I got here. Even if sanity was
the base qualification for participating in a BMW CCA autocross, I should
probably be excluded. After all, I am here despite the facts that:
•My car is designed to haul groceries and people.
•My car is a big ol’ heavy 9-year-old sedan with 92,000 miles on it.
•I have a lowly inline 6 rather than a powerful V-8.
•I have 2 car seats in back.
•I have no clue what I am doing.
Testing the water
I didn’t drive in the first auto-cross this season. To be honest, I was intimidated. I wasn’t sure if my car was equipped for it. I didn’t know if I
was up to it. Will I need to drive the course at 30mph or 90mph? I figured
that the only way I would find out what it was all about was to peek in
and see. I sent an email to the event organizers, Larry and Christo, and
asked if it would be alright for me to come by to observe. They both encouraged me to come.
I ended up being much less afraid. In fact, I would like to tell you other
intrepid folks about autocross so that you just might come as well. Maybe
if I walk you through an event you
can skip that initial intimidation
part – the fear of the unknown.
The day starts when you drive up
to “the gate”. A 300 lb. tattooed guy
in a leather jacket stands in front of
a metal door and glares at you. “Are
you on the list?” he challenges. Oh
wait, that was a party the night before. What really happens is that
a friendly and handsome young
man standing next to an even more
handsome Z4 (no offense intended)
greets you, has you sign an insurance waiver. He then directs you to
the parking area.
Checking in
Upon arrival you park and get your
car ready. For me that means taking things that might fly around
the cabin when I do barrel rolls.
Oops, is my memory of last night
returning? In any case, it’s a good
idea to remove your mats, car seats,
Dunkin Doughnuts coffee cup, and
anything else that could slide under
the brake pedal or bonk an instructor on his/her head while you are
driving. I also take my spare tire
out and pretend that my lightened
car will be a real speed demon.
After you are ready and before
the drivers’ meeting is a great time
to talk to someone that has the car
that you coulda, shoulda, woulda
bought if you didn’t have a mortgage or need to buy food. I did this
on my first event and got myself invited for a ride-along in a 2002 Z4.
My future plans include ride-alongs
in a Mini and an M-Coupe (Christo
is finding out about this right now).
Or, you can just sit down and read
your Boston Bimmer and relax until
the drivers’ meeting.
Cone School
The drivers’ meeting is like a well
made infomercial. It is entertaining and informative as much as it
is a pitch to sell you something. In
this case, safety and a fun are the

enough to let in a cone
killing, never-been-on-arace-track-newbie driving
a moderately powered
grocery getter, they’ll let
you in too.”
If you ignored the informative
email the night before, you are
told at the end of the meeting
if you are “working” first or “running” first. Working
means that you stand in a designated place and restore
cones that other drivers have knocked over. Running
means dealing with the cones from behind the steering
wheel. I guess the lingo could be “driving” but running
implies speed and that’s the whole idea.
Regardless of your first act, you get your worker assignments at the end of the meeting. Then the course
is opened for walk-throughs. I have seen folks take out
pad and pencil and meticulously reproduce the course.
I’ve seen bikes and skateboards traverse the course. Most
people go on foot by themselves or with a few others and
discuss tactics to handle the various challenges. Me, I opt
for the “novice walk-through”. An experienced driver
tells us novices all about the course. You find out which
cones to go between and which to ignore. If you listen
to the coaching on how to approach, execute, and leave
each set of cones, you might even avoid some of them!
After the walk-though, things really pick up. At the last
event, I got to work first. I am not sure why it is called
working, I think it’s fun. You can scoot after the dislodged cones like those kids that pick up tennis balls

that you pick up the cone(s) before another cone-hating driver

Later you will likely be knocking down cones yourself. It’s

safety and insurance reasons, anyone riding with me is
just plain smart for donning protective head gear.
After a few times driving the course I wised up (a bit)
and ask for specific help rather than let the instructor try
to guess about my opportunities for improvement ahead
of time. And, as we know in business-speak “opportunities for improvement” is a euphemism for, how I stink.
I tell the instructor, “I’m working at looking ahead and
not getting lost.”
Looking ahead is important. By looking ahead, you
can leave each corner in a way that you are best set up
to enter the next corner or straightaway. This turns out
to be about the most important action to get good at-with the possible exception of not getting lost. Looking
ahead mitigates my inclination to get lost. Though, I’ve
managed to get myself on the wrong side of a cone or
get completely lost at least once each event. While most
everyone does it, I can’t help feeling like Charlie Brown
missing that football. Good grief.
Having an instructor in the car is invaluable for a novice like me. After telling them my fear of getting lost in
the sea of cones, each instructor has stepped up to the
plate and provided me the guidance I needed. With one
white knuckled hand they clasp the door pull and the
other they calmly tell me to “look there,” “now there,”
“brake hard,” and “look there, no there, there!” These
folks have nerves of steel. I think to qualify as an instructor, they must have taught their own child how to
drive.
Go for it!
I would like to encourage all club members to go auto-crossing. Listen, if the bar is low enough to let in a
cone killing, never-been-on-a-race-track-newbie driving
a moderately powered grocery getter, they’ll let you in
too. Hey, I set my own bar low too. This is my first season
and my personal goal is to finish third from the bottom
-- at least some of the time. Since I am still struggling to
not be dead last, you fellow neophytes with regular ol’
cars are my last chance. While I’m hoping you neophytes
show up and elevate me, there is one sure thing. I promise that you will have a blast! ♦

Behind the Wheels by Ina Ames
When the answer is: Yes, No, and Maybe
T
here are debates within the tire and wheel industry
that are confusing to consumers as well at the the
people in the industry. Have you ever gone to two
different automotive providers and have them given
you opposite answers to a tire or wheel question? The
reason is that in many cases, the answer is yes, no and
maybe. Below are a few of these debates without my
personal prejudices.
Where should I place two new tires
on a front wheel drive vehicle?
Generally, there is no controversy that you should put
two new tires on the rear for a rear wheel drive vehicle. There is a “yes, no, and maybe” debate over where
to put new tires on front wheel drive vehicles.
One position is that on a front wheel drive vehicle,
you should put the new tires on the rear, because
there is no weight in the rear of that vehicle, so you
want to have the better traction in the rear. Also, in
the front you have the weight of your engine putting
pressure on the front wheels, helping you get better
traction out of the tire.
A second position is that you should put the new
tires on the front. This is because that’s where your
drive train is, and that means your power is coming
from the front of the vehicle. Some people say to put
the new tires in the front so you get the power from
the drive train going to the new tires.
Why replace all four tires on an all
wheel drive vehicle?
Many customers object to the fact that you are supposed to replace all four tires if one is damaged. The
22 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2011
reason to replace all four tires is that if all four tires
are not within 2/32 nds to 3/32 nds of tread wear, the
difference in the tread may cause a problem with the
transfer case.
The transfer case distributes the power of the engine
to all four wheels. If one of the wheel’s tread wear is
significantly different, then it could spin at a different
speed or revolution than the other tires. As a result of
these differing speeds, you are putting more pressure
on the transfer case and you could ruin the gears inside
of it. If you ruin the gears inside your transfer case, you
will need to replace it and you may possibly have some
residual damage to the transmission.
Should I replace my tires with the
factory recommended tires?
Let’s start by explaining how a specific tire becomes
the factory recommended tire. We go back to the car
manufacturer’s engineering department. Once the
engineers finish designing a car, they send the specifications for tires to several tire manufacturers. The
tire manufacturer who bids the lowest, wins the bid.
Sometimes, two manufacturers win the bid and there
is a primary and secondary recommended tire. This
makes it amusing for vendors like
me who receive calls from customers who tell me their Porsche
dealer says they should buy “the”
recommended tire when actually
Porsche recommends at least two
different tires for that car.
Should I replace my
tires with the factory
recommended tires?
As long as the tire is the correct
size and the correct load rating
and an appropriate speed rating
(see below), you do not have to
buy any of the manufacturer’s recommended tires. This will not void
your warranty. You should do research online or contact someone
who sells tires that you trust. Be
careful when looking online for
recommendations by customers
who are in different climates than
you are. A tire — especially an all
season tire may be fabulous in California and Florida and horrid in
areas with cold winter weather.
So, you don’t need to replace
your tires with the factory recommended brands. When in doubt,
feel free to call me or my team
with any questions.
What standard should I
use to choose a speed
rating for my car?
The engineers who set up the specifications for the car generally offer
a single speed rating, although
sometimes they will offer two.
As a general rule, you will want
to use replacement tires with the
same or a higher speed rating than
the manufacturer originally put on
the car.
Speed ratings can be confusing,
as they do not seem to correspond
to reasonable speeds in the real
world. “H” rated tires, for instance, are listed as rated up to 130
mph, and “Y” rated tires are rated
up to 186 mph! Since most of us
rarely exceed 80 mph in the real
world, the most important differences between speed ratings have
much more to do with the rubber
compound of the tires. Higher
rated tires are usually made of a
softer compound which is better at
higher speeds but will wear faster. Thus, “Z” rated tires will be
softer, have a stiffer sidewall, ride
smoother at high speed, wear out
faster and generally will be more
expensive than “H” rated tires.

Guest Columnist: story by Neil Halin
It all started
What happens when
At left: Jake Schumaker (left) and Neil
Halin (right) appear to be feeling their
oats at their Sears Point reunion.
– story by Neil Halin
“W
e haven’t talked
in a while…” my
old friend and
and former Boston Chapter
member Jake Schumaker
started off his email. A
number of years ago Jake
moved to the wrong coast
to chase his career in medical sales. Jake and I had
been chasing each other
around the track for several
years having fairly evenly
matched and modified cars
and once he moved westward he started taunting me
about the year-round track
season out there.
“C’mon out and we’ll
make the rounds. Do you
know how many tracks are
within two hours drive of
my house?” he would ask.
24 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2011
The funny thing was that just before Jake’s email I had booked a
business trip to San Francisco. I would have to be in his fair city
from Sunday (yes, I missed the last day of the year at NHMS)
through Thursday morning and on the company dollar no less. A
quick phone call to Jake confirmed that yes, the track season was
still in high gear out in sunny California. He quickly found a track
event on Friday with Trackmasters Racing at the famous Infineon
speed complex in Sears Point. One problem stood in the way, my
tickets had me returning east on Thursday. $100 later Jet Blue had
me booked on the red-eye flight Friday night.
The need for speed realized
The flight out was uneventful, if not delayed. The meeting was also
uneventful and soon Friday approached. Jake and I had been emailing for several weeks planning our outing. He still has his E36 but
his car has progressed further down the line to a track-only beast.
Jake had taken up NASA time trials and done very well at it. As his
need for speed increased there was only so far he could reasonably
go with engine alone (although his Euro motor didn’t hurt) and
now the quest was for less weight. The car now sports a welded-in
roll bar, race seats and not much else. Most of the dash is gone and
only a bit of the driver’s floor remains under the pedals. He finally
moved to trailering the car so it is no longer registered.
Nuts, bolts and carseats
Jake picked me up at the hotel and we went off to fetch the car and
the trailer. Once back at the house I noticed that most of the tail
lights were out on the trailer and only the left brakes worked. Out
came some tools and a quick visit to the auto part store produced
any other needed parts. A few bits of wire, some new crimps and a
bunch of new bulbs later the trailer was ready to go. With the E36
safely strapped in resting on sticky slicks my attention turned to the
car that I would pilot, his E90 M3. Tech rules are a bit more lax out
there and my suggestion to remove the carseat was answered with
with an email.
old friends reconnect at Infineon race track?
“Why? It’s belted in.” I cleaned out the trunk and glove
box, loaded in some supplies, my firesuit and helmet,
and went to bed.
It never rains in California
We woke up before dawn to find that it was raining. According to Jake, he has never had a track day rained out.
That made me feel great given that I had paid for the
track day and paid for the return ticket change. I started
up the E90, he started up the Tahoe and we headed north
to Infineon. Sunrise over the Golden Gate bridge was
amazing. At one point it was raining over the highway,
sunny on the horizon and a rainbow as visible to the
other side. I had hope for a good day.
We arrived at Infineon and were directed into the
lower garage area. The rain was light, but one glance out
at the track near turn 11 told me that it was WET! There
was no tech line and the driver’s meeting was brief but
to the point. “It’s wet out there. If you drop a wheel onto
any of the mud or dirt, you WILL roll.” Another quick
reminder followed: if it isn’t soft (you’ll roll) it is hard
(lots of concrete walls). Trackmasters Racing usually has
multiple groups at most events, but because this day was
a testing day at Infineon we would have one run group
and alternate track time with the professionals. However, there were no professionals because it was raining
so we alternated with an empty track. The organizers
reviewed open passing rules and handed out big yellow
circles to put on the front and back of any car that didn’t
feel comfortable with the open passing. Cars with circles
could only be passed with a point-by. In the end just
about everyone gave courtesy point-byes on the track to
keep it safe. We decided to leave the E36 on the trailer
and go out in the first session in the E90 on street tires.
Jake instructs for several groups, so he did the orientation laps for me. Discretion dictated the use of full
traction control to avoid meeting any of the previously
mentioned fates.
The road to Infineon was wet and slippery, and so was the track when
we arrived. However, by afternoon the pavement had dried off and the
gloves came off.
Amazing elevation changes
The track is amazing with over 160 foot elevation changes and 12 turns in the road course configuration.
The two 180 degree turns (7 and 11) are interesting. Turn
7 has a wide runoff and lots of grip. Turn 11 is tight with
lots of concrete walls around it. Turn 1 is uphill and turn
2 is off camber at the top of the hill followed by an immediate drop to turn 3. Turn 4 is an off camber, downhill 90
degree turn. Turn 6 is a barely banked downhill carousel
which leads to a long straight on the end of the dragstrip.
Turns 7a through 9 are a downhill corkscrew, and Jake
reminded me that his friend rolled his car after a “sissy
lift” coming into 9.
Orientation laps out of the way I took the wheel. Given
the residual value of the E90, I elected to leave the car in
M-mode (short for “save your butt” mode). Many of the
turns were like glass, and I slowly built speed. Before
lunch the rain let up, and the cars started to dry off the
line. Jake elected to take out the track car, and the pace
continued to increase. Turns 2, 4 and 11 remained skating rinks.

Jake Schumaker and Neil Halin showing off their rides
After lunch the
gloves come off
Infineon Speed Complex
at Sears Point
Lunch allowed me to
help several drivers
reinstall their belts
properly as well as
fully replace Jake’s expired harnesses with
new HANS compatible
ones. It also allowed
the track to dry more,
and after lunch the kid gloves came off. Jake went
blasting around the track terrorizing NSXs, P-cars and
Aston Martins.
I picked the pace up a bit as well, and it was quickly
clear that the fastest way around the 180 degree turns
was a full-on power slide, much to the amusement of
the corner workers. No sissy lifts in the corkscrews
and lots of fun. The E90 sounded great, and the car
was amazing on street tires. On track rubber the car
would be out of this world. I never gained the courage
(maybe a self-preservation instinct?) to fully disable
the track nanny on the car, but in M-mode it was a
totally tossable car.
All good things must come to an end
In the last session Jake pulled in early with a funny
clunk in the rear as well as a handling problem. At most
tracks this would result in a tow home and a trip to the
mechanic. Not at Infineon where they not only have a
full service racing supply store, but also an industrial
park with dozens of track and racing-related businesses. We found the crew at Works Evo Rallyart’s shop
and asked if they could look at the car. In a shop full
of rally Evos we discovered that all of the mechanics

drove E30 M3s!
A few minutes
on the rack revealed a broken
left front camber
plate mounting
stud and a very
loose rear camber arm. Soon
the broken stud
was welded and
the suspension bits were tightened, but sadly the day
was now over and all that remained was to load up the
E36 and drive on home. With a sad heart we headed
home after an excellent day at the track ceding the
paddock to the local Audi club. I had to catch a plane
home and Jake had to curb his enthusiasm until next
Tuesday when he heads out to Laguna Seca. Now that
Jake and I have reconnected , I hope that it doesn’t
take years for me to return to the land of the perpetual
track season to visit some of the other local tracks.
We’ll keep the email going strong until then. ♦

Track trailer w/ 12” wheels, built
spring 2010. All wiring enclosed in
vinyl tubing or wrapped to protect
it from chafing and the elements.
Rear lights are mounted up on box
for better visibility and protection
from the elements. Trailer tongue
was moved forward about 4 inches
which improves stability of trailer.
Tool box is Contico ProTuff, locking and include match pair of pad
locks. The box is large enough for a
lot of tools and supplies and weatherproof (molded plastic). Trailer
comes with an unused spare and
mount. Includes hitch lock. 4 tires
mount in tapered wood “rack” and
use a threaded rod with plastic caps
to hold them together. They are then
ratchet strapped down. The result is
a rock solid load that doesn’t move,
doesn’t rattle and works great. $450.

Set of four alloy wheels for E36
M3 in size 17”x8”. Manufacturer
is NSW, model is Roh. Huh? Well,
doesn’t matter who or what. These
wheels are cosmetically in sad
shape; three have been repainted and the paint is chipping. I’ve
been using these as rollers for my
track car but no longer need them.
If you’re looking for the same, or
want some cheap wheels for winter

steel wheels), these might be for
you. High resolution photo available. Email for more info. $185 obo.

EM 18” wheels in great condition
with a fair set of Bridgestone Blizzaks for 2003 X5: The 2003 X5 is
gone and I upgraded to an E70 X5.
Of course BMW changed the hub
size, so these will not fit! The “old”
X5 I had some alignment issues, so
the wear pattern on the Blizzaks is
a bit one sided. Plenty of tread left
on most of the tires though. I drove
on them plenty and didn’t have any
issues. Tire size is 255/55/18. More
and better pictures on request. Mike:
