The Horse Whisperer
Resident Spotlight
September was full of excitement as we had many celebrations and adventures. We
kicked off the month with a pizza party to celebrate College Football . The Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets won their season openers which sets the
stage for a successful season. We celebrated Grandparents Day with chocolate cake and
good company. Thank you to all who came out and made it special. We enjoyed new
performing artists, Rodger Bache and Valerie Snider, who graced us with their musical
talent. Games with Brady has been a great hit! Everyone can’t wait to get their “game”
on when Brady is around to get the fun rolling. Don’t miss it in October! As we glide into
fall, October is a busy month. Tony DeVilla will be back to play guitar during dinner the
first weekend of October. We will eat lunch at the Varsity, go apple picking in Ellijay, and
get dressed up for our Halloween Happy Hour. The Perimeter Ballet Dancers will be
performing for us on Saturday, October 15th at 3pm. Our biggest and most sensational
event will be our Fall Festival on October 22nd, from noon to 3pm. You don’t want to
miss this party. We will have a live Bluegrass band, we’ll have a bounce house, a dunk
tank, and a ton of family fun activities. We will be grilling out hamburgers, hotdogs and
other cookout favorites. Autumn is bringing us beautiful weather, thrilling outdoor activities, and enchanting good times.

Bill Brooks
Bill was born in 1926 right here in Cumming, GA.
He is the youngest of 4 children. His father ran the
general store, which at the time was located on
the square in downtown Cumming. Bill graduated
high school (when all grades went to class at what
is now the Cumming Playhouse). Bill entered the
army in 1944. He was sent to boot camp in Florida,
and then his infantry served overseas in the Philippines during WWII. He was headed for Japan
when his crew received word that the war was
over. After coming home from the war he worked
at Lockheed in Marietta, GA. In 1956 he married
Betty Taylor. Bill met Betty at a square dance in
Cumming. He had a brand new 1955 Chevy and
she lived on a dirt road in Forsyth County. He
decided he needed to marry her and move her to
town so he could quit driving his new car out that
dirt road. Her father was a retired Georgia state
patrol officer and she had 5 older brothers so he
had his work cut out for him to win them over and
get permission to marry her. Bill and Betty were
happily married for 46 years. They built a house in
1958 just up Highway 9 from downtown Cumming. Bill lived there until moving to VOC in October of 2015. He worked at the family store with his
brother Joe. In the early 70s the store moved up
Highway 9 just north of the library and became
more of a feed/seed garden center. The store was
soon named Brooks Garden Center. Over time Bill
moved to working full time at the store beginning
in the early 80s, he ran the store until selling it,
and then he retired in 1996. After retiring from the
store he continued to garden at home in his
greenhouse and is known locally for growing great
tomatoes. Bill and Betty have 2 sons – Jeff and
Danny. Jeff and his wife, Leigh, have 2 daughters –
Ashleigh and Kelsey – and Bill is a very proud
grandfather. He is a long time member of Cumming Baptist Church and sang regularly in the
choir for many years. Bill briefly played trumpet in
a rock and roll band when he was young. He has
also played the guitar all of his life. He has many
talents from gardening to playing music. Bill has a
smile that will light up the room. He is fun to be
around and always has a funny story to tell. We
love having Bill here at the Villas at Canterfield!!
