The experience of serving full-time propels people to act. City Year’s mission is to build democracy through national service – to promote active citizenship as an essential ingredient of a strong and vibrant democracy. Through a commitment to a cause greater than self, we reinforce the ideal of government “of the people, by the people, and for the people” and strengthen the democracy that affords us these rights. When young people serve, they inspire others, and in doing so generate vast resources of civic capital for meeting the pressing needs of our country. When young people choose to participate in City Year and all AmeriCorps programs, when they give back by helping neighbors rebuild their communities, and when they mentor underserved children to become future leaders, they experience a civic rite of passage that can define and inspire a lifetime of citizenship and build a stronger democracy. 1 city year annual report 2002 table of contents pages 6-10 2002 city year in review pages 11-13 champions pages 14-18 board members pages 19-27 financial report pages 28-43 contributors pages 44-48 service partners fellow citizens To the City Year Community: The beginning of our 13th “city year” was marked by a tragic, world-changing day, September 11, 2001, a day of shock, horror and grief. A new era for our nation and our world began on that historic Tuesday. But along with new fears and difficult questions came renewed patriotism, a deeper commitment to community, and a rededicated ethic of national service. President George W. Bush captured this recommitment of the American civic spirit when, in his 2002 State of the Union address, he called on all Americans to dedicate two years – 4,000 hours – over their lifetimes to serving their communities and country. City Year answered the call with 1.5 million hours dedicated to serving more than 78,000 children and thousands of citizens in 14 communities nationwide. We are grateful to the thousands of generous donors who made this important work possible and to the more than 700 community organizations with whom we partnered to deliver this service. As we rededicated ourselves to service, we also committed the organization to a four-year plan to dramatically strengthen City Year. A two-year strategic planning process identified four overarching goals: impact, scale, sustainability and leverage. To achieve these goals, the City Year National Board of Trustees adopted an initiative to strengthen twelve key capacities needed for the organization to pursue its mission to build democracy through national service in the 21st century. In November of 2001, we were honored and deeply grateful that The Atlantic Philanthropies announced a $10 million challenge grant to City Year – the largest private gift in City Year’s history. The challenge grant, which must be matched two-to-one with an additional $20 million in strategic investment capital, allows City Year to begin immediately to build those twelve critically needed capacities. Our goal is to have this generous challenge grant successfully matched by January of 2005. The 2001-02 program year ended on a note of tremendous hope and promise, as the City Year community welcomed its first class of Clinton Democracy Fellows -11 emerging leaders from South Africa - who spent three months at City Year programs across the country, meeting local and national leaders, exchanging ideas with Americans, and studying our nation’s growing national service system. President William Jefferson Clinton and City Year established the Fellowship to build a global network of young leaders from emerging and established democracies who are committed to developing citizen service programs, advancing citizen service policies, and using social entrepreneurship to strengthen democracy. The pilot program was a tremendous success, and a new class of Fellows, again from South Africa, was selected in the spring of 2003. We are pleased to present you with the 2002 City Year Annual Report, “Building Democracy.” We dedicate this annual report, and the past year of service, to those who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th. Thank you for your support of and belief in City Year and national service. Sincerely, Alan Khazei CEO Michael Brown President Jeffrey B. The 2002 “city year” was dedicated to the memory of those lost on that tragic day. Opening Day September/October 2001 Nearly 1,000 City Year corps members in 14 communities across the nation took the City Year pledge and began a year of community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. “I pledge…to build a stronger community, nation and world, for all of us.” President Clinton Visits City Year November 20, 2001 President Clinton visited City Year National Headquarters on the 10th anniversary of his first visit. Addressing the staff, he said, “You show us every day that what we have in common is more important than our differences.” Intranet v.1.0 City Year successfully introduced version 1.0 of its enterprise-wide intranet portal – “City Year@Work.” The portal provides a secure internal website for staff and corps members to share up-to-the-minute information and important organizational tools across the network. Care Force™ Care Force is a business division of City Year, Inc. that offers professional consulting services specializing in community service and employee training experiences, specifically in the areas of strengthening diversity, team building, and leadership skills. The mission of Care Force is to engage a client’s workforce in meaningful community service and training experiences that will heighten morale, unify employees, and build goodwill within the community for both tactical and long-term business success. In 2002, Care Force engaged 1,635 participants who contributed a total of 8,630 hours of service and affected the lives of over 3,100 community residents in Boston, Chicago, Jacksonville, Kansas City, New York, and Washington, D.C. Care Force partners included longtime City Year National Leadership Sponsor The Timberland Company, as well as PepsiCo, Share Our Strength, Fidelity Investments, and Macy’s. 6 year in review Martin Luther King, Jr. Day/Young Heroes Opening Day January 21, 2002 On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, City Year corps members across the country joined their communities in a special day of service and reflection to commemorate the life and work of Dr. King. Celebrating ‘a day ON, not a day off.’ The day also served as Young Heroes Opening Day, when over 1,000 middle schoolaged youth pledged to serve their communities. Led by City Year corps members and community volunteers, Young Heroes dedicate their Saturdays to community issues education, hands-on community service, team- and skill-building activities, and personal and group reflection. USA Freedom Corps January 29, 2002 In his first State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush – observing a “new culture of responsibility” in America and envisioning a nation “that serves goals larger than self” – called on every American to “commit at least two years, 4,000 hours over the rest of your lifetime, to the service of your neighbors and your nation.” President Bush announced the formation of a new USA Freedom Corps, to be composed of three major programs: a newly created Citizen Corps to engage citizens in homeland security; an enlarged AmeriCorps and Senior Corps to meet pressing education, public health and community needs; and the Peace Corps, which the President proposed doubling in size. Serve-a-thon™ Clinton Democracy Fellowship at City Year These annual City Year events – in Boston, Philadephia, Chicago, and Cleveland – engaged nearly 8,500 citizens in service this year and transformed communities through painting, landscaping, and renovation projects. The 2002 pilot program of the Clinton Democracy Fellowship began in May 2002 with a 12-week intensive immersion program in the United States. Based at City Year’s headquarters in Boston, the 11 Fellows traveled to other locations around the country, including New York and Washington, D.C., to learn about American citizen service programs and policies. Throughout their stay, the Fellows engaged in dialogues, workshops, and trainings with leading American citizen service practitioners, policymakers, academics, social entrepreneurs, private sector leaders, and public officials, including President Clinton. At the conclusion of the U.S.-based program in August 2002, the Fellows developed a group presentation that included a series of reflections on their experience and a set of recommendations for strengthening citizen service in South Africa. 7 cyzygy ’02 city year’s national convention of idealism Mitt Romney, Recipient Lifetime of Idealism Award cyzygy ’02 Lifetime of Idealism Award Michael Capellas, then-President of HP, with Compaq Leadership Award Recipients City Year’s annual convention of idealism Convention Co-Sponsors: Cisco Systems, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, MFS Investment Management, and The Timberland Company. The campaign is supported by a remarkable $10 million challenge grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies, made after a rigorous process of planning and review that took more than a year. That process sharpened City Year’s strategic plan and identified 12 strategic capacities needed to meet its potential in the fields of national service, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship. These capacities include: a national corps recruitment system, a civic leadership curriculum, program evaluation and research capabilities, enterprise-wide e-solutions that drive impact and productivity, and a new City Year “Alumni Association for Civic Leadership.” In making its $10 million challenge grant to City Year – the largest private gift in City Year’s history – Alan Ruby, The Atlantic Philanthropies’ Senior Vice President for U.S. and Asia/Pacific Programs, stated that: “We believe that this is a strategically important time to support City Year. Political leaders of all ideologies have expressed a strong commitment to the national service movement, and the need to reconstruct civic life is greater than ever. City Year has the record of achievement, the leadership, the vision, and a solid plan not only to advance the national service movement but also to set a new standard for efficacy and sustainability among nonprofits.” To ensure that City Year’s $30 million capacities building plan is funded, The Atlantic Philanthropies is requiring a two-to-one match, and is releasing its $10 million to City Year in installments tied to the organization successfully raising a series of matching gifts and meeting milestones and benchmarks over a four-year period. The grant also requires that $10 million of the matching funds come from principal gifts, each of which must be at least $1 million. City Year is deeply grateful to The Atlantic Philanthropies, and to the families and institutions that have already made principal matching gifts of $1 million: The Cisco Systems Foundation, Holly Davidson, Tim and Corinne Ferguson, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, and Steve Woodsum and Anne Lovett. For more information on the City Year Challenge campaign, the capacities to be built, or The Atlantic Philanthropies grant to City Year, please contact: Steve Woodsum, Chair of the City Year Challenge Campaign, at 617.824.1000 or Michael Brown, Co-Founder and President, City Year, Inc., at 617.927.2345. 11 national leadership sponsors Cisco Systems, Inc. As a National Leadership Sponsor, Cisco Systems, Inc. and the Cisco Systems Foundation have had a significant impact on City Year’s multi-year initiative to maximize technology to help the organization grow to scale, improve operational effectiveness, and provide City Year staff and corps members with the technological tools to enable powerful social entrepreneurship. Cisco has invested over $400,000 in equipment that forms the backbone of City Year’s wide-area network and has provided City Year with invaluable technical assistance on using Cisco equipment for network connectivity and long distance voice service through the Internet. In 2002, Cisco recommitted for another three years as a National Leadership Sponsor, with a focus on capacity building through powerful e-solutions. The partnership assures that City Year can leverage the Internet to streamline and improve its business operations, engage employees and provide leadership development through service days, and disseminate information about the partnership as a model for how a non-profit organization can leverage emergent technologies to maximize social change, civic impact, productivity, organizational effectiveness, and mission delivery. This same year, seven talented employees joined City Year in Boston, San Jose/Silicon Valley and San Antonio through Cisco’s Community Fellowship Program, a unique pro-bono resource that provides Cisco-trained staff for non-profit partners. The Cisco/City Year relationship began in 1993 when Cisco became a founding sponsor of City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley. Since then, the Cisco Foundation sponsored teams in Boston, Cleveland, San Jose/Silicon Valley, and Seattle/King County. The Cisco Foundation was also a founding site sponsor of City Year Washington, DC. Compaq Computer Corporation One of City Year’s two founding national sponsors, Compaq Computer Corporation, now part of the new HP, began its relationship with City Year in 1993 with a $70,000 contribution to support a 10-member Boston team. Compaq helped found the San Jose/Silicon Valley site in 1994, and to date, the company has invested more than $4 million in City Year and provided the organization with equipment, technical expertise, and employee volunteers in collaborative community service programs. In 1998, the company deepened its partnership with City Year by leading the effort to migrate the entire organization to an all-PC technology platform. The $500,000 Compaq Challenge to the high-tech community ultimately leveraged nearly $2 million more in cash, software, printers, and technical support. These investments significantly enhanced City Year’s capacity to deliver its community service programs to nonprofit organizations and schools across the country. Since 1995, the company has sponsored the Compaq Leadership Awards, presented to five outstanding City Year alumni each year at cyzygy, City Year’s annual convention of idealism. The Compaq Leadership Awards recognize City Year alumni who show continued dedication to community service, maintain a commitment to excellence, provide encouragement to others, and exemplify the core values of Compaq and City Year: teamwork, responsibility, diversity, respect for others, leadership, innovation, and personal growth. Compaq employees regularly participate in community-based volunteer programs, including City Year’s annual Serve-a-thon. 12 national leadership sponsors MFS Investment Management® MFS Investment Management®, a global asset management company, began its partnership with City Year over five years ago. MFS has been instrumental in integrating a financial literacy curriculum that provides the basic financial skills necessary to improve the “quality of life” both professionally and personally for the entire national corps, and sponsors the “MFS Investment Management® Financial Literacy Team” in Boston. MFS has forged a strong partnership with City Year Boston, serving for the last four years as Presenting Sponsor of the Boston Serve-a-thon, a transformative day of community service and pledge-based fundraising that engages nearly 5,000 community members each year to complete service projects with over 100 non-profit organizations. Hundreds of MFS employees also make a strong investment by serving throughout the year alongside their City Year team and local residents to renovate schools, community centers, and playgrounds in Boston's neighborhoods. MFS is also the Presenting Sponsor of the Boston-based Starry Starry Night, a festive evening of fundraising, inspiration, and celebration. At cyzygy, the MFS Investment Management® Civic Impact Award, a $10,000 scholarship, is presented to three City Year corps members who have demonstrated significant accomplishments in all areas of the City Year curriculum, with a special focus on service and education. The Timberland Company For over a decade, the Timberland Company and City Year have built a powerful partnership and redefined what a company and a non-profit organization can do together. Timberland’s commitment to City Year is rooted in its philosophy that service builds community and affects social justice. Since becoming the founding National Leadership Sponsor, Timberland has made a $12 million financial investment, and serves as a strategic partner of all of City Year’s major initiatives and as the Official Outfitter of the corps. What started with a donation of 50 pairs of boots in 1989 has developed into the signature City Year uniform, which is seen as a beacon of hope and inspiration across the country. Timberland’s global headquarters houses the City Year New Hampshire corps, and Timberland donates rent, furnishings, and ongoing managerial support to increase the program’s impact. Timberland endowed the City Year Timberland Team in Boston and sponsors the One America Town Meeting at cyzygy, City Year's annual convention of idealism. Inspired by Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community, the One America Town Meeting is a powerful forum for discussion, inspiration, and action. In addition, Timberland has been a key supporter of City Year’s first international efforts in South Africa. Nationally recognized as a leader in corporate citizenship, Timberland offers employees 40 hours paid leave to perform community service. In 2002, Timberland employees completed over 28,000 hours of service in 21 countries around the world, often in partnership with City Year staff and corps. Timberland’s extraordinary commitment to social justice is guided and inspired by President and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey B. Swartz. 13 board members national chair Jeffrey B. These financial statements are the responsibility of City Year’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of City Year as of June 30, 2002 and 2001, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. /s/ KPMG LLP Boston, Massachusetts October 11, 2002 19 financials STATEMENTS OF FINANCIAL POSITION June 30, 2002 and 2001 Assets Cash and equivalents Government grants receivable Contributions receivable, net Other assets Investments Equipment and improvements, net Total assets Liabilities and Net Assets Liabilities: Accounts payable and accrued expenses Amounts due under credit facility and note payable Total liabilities Net assets: Unrestricted Temporarily restricted Permanently restricted Total net assets Total liabilities and net assets $ $ 2002 440,155 4,068,925 9,108,952 310,087 3,927,074 3,223,861 21,079,054 2001 1,194,626 2,742,459 8,944,304 322,531 3,472,509 3,160,045 19,836,474 2,692,841 3,163,077 5,855,918 2,247,746 1,964,616 4,212,362 4,407,402 6,321,576 4,494,158 15,223,136 21,079,054 4,631,785 6,719,098 4,273,229 15,624,112 19,836,474 $ $ See accompanying notes to financial statements. (the Organization or City Year) is a not-for-profit organization as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), and is generally exempt from income taxes under IRC Section 501(a). City Year’s mission is to put idealism to work by tapping the civic power of young people for an annual campaign of idealism that generates transformative community service, breaks down social barriers, inspires citizens to civic action, develops new leaders for the common good, and improves and promotes the concept of voluntary national service. City Year works to fulfill this mission through five primary activities: (1) operating a national youth service corps; (2) building the infrastructure of national service by setting up new operating sites across the country; (3) providing technical assistance to individuals and organizations in national and community service; (4) planning and running large civic events to engage citizens and organizations in activities that promote service, inclusivity, leadership, and citizenship; and (5) constantly developing new ways to engage people and resources to promote the concept of voluntary national service. City Year was founded in Boston in 1988 as an action tank for national service. Its first initiative was to pilot a summer corps with 50 corps members, supported entirely by contributions from private sector organizations and individuals. In 1992, City Year was selected as a National Demonstration Project and was awarded its first federal funding under Subtitle D of the National and Community Service Act. During fiscal 1994, City Year operated its first program outside of Boston, a summer pilot program in Columbia, South Carolina with 50 corps members. In the fall of 1994, City Year launched its first full-year expansion site in Rhode Island, and expanded its Boston corps. In fiscal 1995, corps were established in Chicago, Illinois, Columbus, Ohio, and San Jose, California. The Organization expanded to San Antonio, Texas in fiscal 1996, launched the Cleveland corps in fiscal 1997, began operations in Philadelphia in fiscal 1998, Seattle/King County in fiscal 1999, Detroit in fiscal 2000, and Washington, DC and New Hampshire in fiscal 2001. In fiscal 2002, City Year brought its first class of Clinton Democracy Fellows from South Africa to the United States for training and service learning. (2) SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (a) Basis of Presentation The accompanying financial statements have been prepared on the accrual basis of accounting. Net assets and revenues are classified based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions. Accordingly, net assets of the Organization and changes therein are classified and reported as follows: Unrestricted net assets – Net assets not subject to donor-imposed stipulations. Temporarily restricted net assets – Net assets subject to donor-imposed stipulations that may or will be met either by actions of the Organization and/or the passage of time. Permanently restricted net assets – Net assets subject to donor-imposed stipulations that they be maintained in perpetuity. Generally, the donors of these assets permit the Organization to use all or part of the income earned and capital gains, if any, on related investments for general or specific purposes. Revenues are reported as increases in unrestricted net assets unless use of the related assets is limited by donorimposed restrictions, including time restrictions. Expenses are reported as decreases in unrestricted net assets. Gains and losses on investments and other assets or liabilities are reported as increases or decreases in unrestricted net assets unless their use is restricted by explicit donor stipulations or law. Expirations of temporary restrictions on net assets are reported as reclassifications between the applicable classes of net assets Expirations of temporary restrictions occur when donor-imposed stipulated purposes have been accomplished and/or the stipulated time period has elapsed. If an expense is incurred for a purpose for which both unrestricted and temporarily restricted net assets are available, a donor-imposed restriction is fulfilled to the extent of the expense incurred unless the expense is incurred for a purpose that is directly attributable to another specific external source of revenue. Contributions are generally recognized as revenue in the period received. However, unconditional promises to give that clearly stipulate that the promise to give is to support current-period activities are reported as unrestricted 23 financials support. Similarly, contributions subject to donor-imposed stipulations that are met in the same reporting period are reported as unrestricted support. Conditional promises to give are not recognized until they become unconditional, that is, when the conditions on which they depend are substantially met. Contributions of assets other than cash are recorded at their estimated fair value at the date of gift. Contributions scheduled to be received after one year are discounted at rates commensurate with the risks involved. (b) Operations The statements of activities report all changes in net assets, including changes in unrestricted net assets from operating and nonoperating transactions. Operating revenues consist of those items attributable to City Year’s ongoing national service efforts. Unrestricted contributions are reported as operating revenues. Unrestricted interest and dividend income and appreciation (depreciation) on endowment investments is reported as nonoperating transactions. Because the statements of cash flows are prepared in accordance with a prescribed format under generally accepted accounting principles, certain amounts included in operations as defined for purposes of the statements of activities differ from amounts reported as cash flows from operating activities. (c) Cash and Equivalents Cash and equivalents include checking, savings and money market accounts, and certificates of deposit with maturities of three months or less at date of acquisition. (d) Investments Investments are reported at fair value. The market value of publicly traded securities is based upon quotes from the principal exchanges in which the securities are traded. (e) Equipment and Improvements Equipment and improvements are stated at cost, except for donated assets, which are recorded at fair market value at the date of gift. Ordinary repairs and maintenance are expensed as incurred. Depreciation and amortization are calculated on a straight-line basis over the following estimated useful lives: Furniture and fixtures Computer equipment and software Other equipment Leasehold improvements 3-7 years 3-5 years 3-10 years Life of lease (f) Contributed Goods and Professional Services Contributed goods and professional services are reflected as contributions in the accompanying statements at their estimated fair value at the date received or provided. (g) Program Services Program services consist of expenses related to operations, education, training, corps development, new site development, special events, external affairs and organizational development. (h) Net Assets Reclassified Net assets reclassified represent prior year net assets reclassified to or from other net asset classes based on changes in or clarifications of related donor-imposed restrictions subsequent to the period of contribution. (i) Use of Estimates The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities, and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities, at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates. (j) Reclassifications Certain 2001 information has been reclassified to conform to the 2002 presentation. 24 financials (3) TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED NET ASSETS Temporarily restricted net assets consisted of the following at June 30: Time restrictions Purpose restrictions $ $ 2002 2,854,976 3,466,600 6,321,576 2001 4,128,695 2,590,403 6,719,098 (4) PERMANENTLY RESTRICTED NET ASSETS Permanently restricted net assets at June 30 consisted of the following endowment gifts whose income is restricted: 2002 2001 Program sponsorships $ 4,494,158 4,273,229 $ 4,494,158 4,273,229 (5) NET ASSETS RELEASED FROM RESTRICTIONS Net assets released from restrictions consisted of the following for the years ended June 30: 2002 Expiration of time restrictions $ 2,831,310 Satisfaction of purpose restrictions 1,820,105 $ 4,651,415 2001 2,602,425 3,171,333 5,773,758 (6) IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS Contributed goods and services during the years ended June 30 were used for the following purposes: Nature Program services: Uniforms Professional services Advertising (recruitment) Transportation and travel Rent Equipment rental and maintenance Workshops and conferences Materials and supplies Food Printing and copying Dues and Subscriptions Total program services 2002 2001 1,520,199 2,060,276 735,856 551,776 225,465 87,581 333,935 56,606 92,529 14,378 31,736 5,710,337 1,619,107 1,316,951 587,396 431,193 229,887 114,742 103,978 43,859 32,237 18,127 — 4,497,477 Support services: Professional services Advertising and promotional Rent Materials and supplies Total support services 333,279 — 56,366 20,435 410,080 229,510 80,000 76,628 — 386,138 Depreciation and amortization 424,547 490,251 6,544,964 5,373,866 Total $ $ Contributions of equipment and improvements in 2002 and 2001 were $273,959 and $240,127, respectively. 25 financials (7) INVESTMENTS Investments consisted of the following at June 30: Equities and equity mutual funds Fixed-income mutual funds Money markets and other cash equivalents 2002 2001 $ 3,180,836 604,055 142,183 2,734,543 447,271 290,695 $ 3,927,074 3,472,509 2002 2001 6,428,631 2,863,000 700,000 9,991,631 6,757,481 2,732,500 — 9,489,981 (882,679) (545,677) 9,108,952 8,944,304 2002 89,030 5,278,467 2,649,671 2001 84,498 4,312,482 2,451,808 8,017,168 6,848,788 (4,793,307) (3,688,743) 3,223,861 3,160,045 (8) CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVABLE Contributions receivable consisted of the following at June 30: Due within one year Due within two to five years Due thereafter $ Less present value discount and other allowances $ (9) EQUIPMENT AND IMPROVEMENTS Equipment and improvements consisted of the following at June 30: Furniture and fixtures Equipment and software Leasehold improvements $ Less accumulated depreciation and amortization $ (10) GRANT FROM THE ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES In fiscal 2002, City Year received a grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies of up to $10,000,000 over four years, beginning in July 2001, to provide funding for capacity-building initiatives and comprehensive evidence of impact evaluation studies. The grant consists of a base grant of $5,500,000, which will be recognized as revenue as project expenditures are incurred, and an additional $4,500,000 challenge grant that is subject to staged matching requirements totaling $20,000,000 over the four-year award period. During fiscal 2002, City Year recognized total unrestricted revenue of $2,690,000 under the grant and raised $3,000,000 of matching funds consisting of three principal gifts from other donors of $1,000,000 each. These matching gifts have been reported as contributions in the applicable net asset classes in the accompanying 2002 statement of activities. (11) FEDERAL GRANTS – CNS The Corporation for National Service (CNS) selected City Year as a National Demonstration Project under the National and Community Service Act of 1990 and awarded a two-year National Demonstration Grant. Funds were awarded through the Massachusetts Department of Education, which was the legal grantor for these program years. Programmatic oversight was provided by the Massachusetts National and Community Service Commission. 26 financials (11) FEDERAL GRANTS – CNS CONT.
