INTRODUCTION
Doordarshan’s Mumbai channel came on map of Television history on 2nd October 1972. Initially
the telecast was in black & white and the duration was about 2 hours per day. Also, the
transmission went through a small transmitter which catered to the need of few T.V. households.
Going through various stages DDK Mumbai today has become one of the major centres in India.
Today DDK Mumbai manages transmission of two 24 hours channels namely DD1 (National
Network) and Sahyadri (RLSS). DDK Mumbai runs the regional language satellite channel
‘Sahyadri’ with round the clock transmission on satellite mode and with terrestrial support on
National Network from 06.00 am to 09.00 am and 03.00 pm to 08.00 pm. With overall technical
and production development we are in a position to produce more than 70 % of programmes inhouse.
DD Sahyadri’s Mission
 To inform, Educate and Entertain Marathi knowing people in their language, idiom & Culture.
To showcase the Real Maharashtra Culture, its values, traditions, modernization, diversity
and its unity through programmes of high quality in the highest tradition of Public Service
Broadcasting with true Indian National Spirit.
DD Sahyadri is the only Public Service Broadcaster among all Marathi TV Channels available in
Maharashtra. The channel keeps its mandate to telecast programmes useful to people in their dayto-day life as well as for their overall development. The Channel devotes more than 46 % of its
time to telecast informative, educative and other Public Service Programmes.
DD-Sahyadri : The essence of Maharashtra.
Doordarshan’s Marathi Regional Programme Channel was born on the 9th August 1986 with a
Terrestrial Transmitter at Mumbai.
DD Sahyadri is the Marathi language Satellite Channel, which was launched on 15th August, 1994.
It became a round the clock service in 2000. Supported by Doordarshan Studios in Mumbai, Pune
and Nagpur, DD Sahyadri is a household name in Maharashtra, largely because of its programmes
with high production values. Despite stiff competition from private satellite channels, DD
Sahyadri holds its own platform with acclaimed serials, informative programmes, public debates
and film based programmes. DD Sahyadri also felicitates eminent citizens and personalities of
Maharashtra for their contribution in different fields, by honoring them with different Sahyadri
Awards i.e. Navratna Awards, Marathi Cine Awards, Navjyoti Awards, Krishiratna Awards, Hirkani
Awards, Sindhu Awards and Prerna Awards.
DD Sahyadri is uplinked from Mumbai through INSAT-3A Satellite in C-Band and can be
watched in the entire footprint area of INSAT-3A. It is also available in DD-Direct Plus
Doordarshan’s free-to-air DTH Service.

complementing and supplementing it’s in house production efforts and bringing in
variety in DD's programming.
Under this scheme of self financed commissioning, the Producer shall produce the
programme at his own risk and cost and on the selection of the programme by DD,
the latter would market it, telecast the same and pay the producer for his services
after a specified period of time.

Avtar Kishan Hangal, popularly known as A. K.
Hangal, was an Indian freedom fighter from
1929-1947 and also stage actor from 19361965 and later became a character actor in
Hindi language films from 1966-2005 . He
expired on 26th August 2012.

DDK Mumbai has developed a system to facilitate video streaming on internet. This
was utilized for streaming of DD Sports through internet to watch DD Sports at London
Olympics.
A system has been developed facilitating digital delivery of commercials through
internet in file format in DD network with which all commercials from clients and
agents are received instantly improving efficiency of marketing division and thereby
increase in revenue earning.
Old ‘A’ studio has been refurbished successfully with equipments dismantled from A1
studio and put to use.
Subtitling solution for DTT was tested successfully at DDK Mumbai in association with
M/s C-DAC Pune. This shall facilitate transmission of multiple languages alongwith the
signal and a choice to viewers to select the required language from the remote of their
TV sets.
DDK Mumbai has installed its own mail server which is facilitating this Kendra with
corporate mail IDs to all officers.

Development of caspar CG to give a versatile solution for various applications like CG,
Clipmail, off air logger, graphics for sports application etc.
New fly away C Band DSNG installed and commissioned and utilized for regular
deployments remote operation of encoders, IRDs and routers is incorporated in
house.
A collaborative post production facility in HDTV format is installed and commissioned
at DDK Mumbai. The integration of this set up with coming up HD studio and
transmission server not only enables a provision of Live telecast but also gives a total
tapeless work flow – right from production to transmission.

central storage for playout automation with post production.
The programme contribution to DD National like Rangoli,
Bioscope, 4nos. of films i.e. HBN retrospective, Hindi Feature
Film – 2 nos., ‘Chulbuli Filmen Chatpati Gupshup’, daily soap
‘Sarswatichandra’ etc, are given from the OASYS server. It is

3x230 ton Chillers
AC PLANT
All the technical areas are cooled by centralized AC plant comprising of 3x230 ton Chillers and
15 AHUS of various capacity.
The AC system is working satisfactorily and the cooling provided in all area is adequate. The
chilled water lines have also been extended to the closed loop cooling of 2x20 KW transmitters
as there is enough capacity in the plant. In addition there are 43 Nos. of Split ACs, and 21 Nos.
of Window A/Cs in the Technical areas.

The field camera unit comprises of :
25 units of DVC pro Camcorders
4 nos. Mini DV Camcorders.
5 nos. of HD Camcorders.
Average 8-10 news coverages and 5-6
programme coverages per day.
Footage of news value from various
places outside Mumbai the Kendra is
received through internet Facility.
