2012-13 Men’s Basketball Preview - Five First-Teamers Return
A
lthough the season has yet to tip-off, the
Horizon League already has a singular distinction among
the NCAA’s 31 conferences heading into the 2012-13 men’s
basketball campaign.
It is the only league to return all five first-team selections from the previous season.
With that continuity in place, excitement is mounting
that the Horizon League will be highly competitive, with
several teams striving for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Said Detroit head coach Ray McCallum, “It shows
that we had a lot of young players that are talented and
had great years. The league is just getting better and better;
the players are getting better [and] you’ve got outstanding
coaches in the conference.”
“As we saw last year, any team can beat anyone
pretty much on any night,” said Valparaiso forward Ryan
Broekhoff, who took Player of the Year honors in 2011-12.
“There’s such an even spread of talent across this league, but
it’s diverse: some teams are big, some teams are small, some
teams shoot the ball, some teams go inside. Each night is a
completely different game plan for each team. There are a
lot of players you have to keep an eye out for.”
That diversity promises to make league play compelling and will have fans taking notice, but it also promises to
be a headache for those trying to draw up the game plans.
“It’s great for the league, but it’s a nightmare for
coaches,” Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle said with a
laugh. “You just sit there seeing all of these teams and what
they have coming back, and it’s going to be another deep
year in the league. Every team is better, every team has talent. It should be exciting for the Horizon League and people
need to know how good this league is.”
MAKING A NAME
“You’re always going to start at the bottom and work
your way up. I think that’s been going on these last couple
of years,” said Kevin Van Wijk, the unheralded Valparaiso
Crusader who took nearly everyone by surprise with a 13.9
points-per-game average and 61.7 shooting percentage.
A native of the Netherlands, Van Wijk made a name for
himself last season with his inspiring performance.
After Broekhoff and Van Wijk led Valparaiso to the
regular-season conference title last season, the Crusaders
fell to Detroit in the tournament’s championship game. This
season, they’re out for revenge.
TIME TO STEP UP
“It’s going to bring out a little bit of rivalry between
players. Obviously, we’ve got a little thing with Detroit
that we’d like to get back – and Ray McCallum’s back,”
Broekhoff said, referring to Detroit’s star point guard, the
son of the Titans coach and last year’s tournament MVP.
“It’s just going to put pressure on players to try to do their
best to limit their [opponents’] production. There are guys
in the league that put up big numbers that we have to try
to keep in check and limit if we want to be successful, and
that goes for every team and every player and it’s just going
to be another tough season.”
Van Wijk echoed his Australian teammate’s desire to
once again see how everyone stacks up. “I think it makes it
interesting,” the Dutchman said. “The guys that are back –
you can compete against them again, see how much they
have improved and how much you have improved.”
Both of Detroit’s Ray McCallums understand that it’s
not going to be an easy road.
“The Horizon League is definitely a really good
conference and definitely a competitive one,” said the
2
younger McCallum, who over the summer participated in
the Chris Paul Skills Academy and the Deron Williams Skills
Academy. “All the top guys are back, so it makes for a really
competitive year.”
For the elder McCallum, the top echelon of players
is capped by Broekhoff. “He was just phenomenal. He did
everything. He’s one of the most complete players in the
conference,” Coach McCallum said of the Aussie. “With [Valparaiso] being the [regular-season] conference champions,
he won a well-deserved Player of the Year, and I’ve got to
assume that they’ll be the favorites.”
Whether McCallum’s prediction proves true, it’s obvious there are multiple teams in a position to compete for
the Horizon League title and the automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament that comes with it. But who says the League can
only send one representative?
DANCING
“If it was any year, it would probably be this one,”
Broekhoff said of the possibility that multiple Horizon
League teams could reach the Field of 68. “It just depends
on out-of-conference play and how the other teams perform. If teams sneak some wins on the road and have some
big victories, it could be two or more teams that make the
NCAA tournament, which would not only be fantastic for
the teams but great for the league, getting that exposure
kind of post-Butler era.”
Broekhoff’s coach knows a thing or two about the
NCAA tournament. Bryce Drew was the hero of Valparaiso’s
run of success in the mid-90s, including hitting 1998’s “The
Shot” to defeat Ole Miss in the first round of the Big Dance.
Drew, like many others, believes that a Horizon League
team or two could make a deep run in the tournament, if
they could just get in.
“The hardest part is getting a team in, I believe. It has
shown historically that when Horizon
League teams have gotten into the
tournament they have done well,”
Drew said. “There have been multiple
teams that have won. If we get multiple
teams in, I think that any team that
would get there would have a chance
to win games.”
Wardle noted that going through
league play is going to be the most
difficult aspect for any team hoping
to make the NCAA tournament. “The
hardest part is that Horizon League
play is going to be so tough,” Wardle
said. “You’re going to have to go in
there and handle your business and go
on the road and steal some games. As
we all know as coaches in the Horizon
League, it’s very, very tough to win on
the road in our league.”
Tough as it might be, everyone
acknowledges it could be possible for
the Horizon League to send multiple
teams to the NCAA Tournament, and –in
the one instance, at least – everyone is
rooting for everyone else.
“Even though Butler’s gone, this
is still a strong conference. Detroit
played extremely well toward the end
of the year last year and they played
well against a very tough Kansas team
in the first round of the tournament,”
Youngstown State first team All-League
guard Kendrick Perry said. “The Horizon League certainly has some big
contenders for the NCAA tournament. I think it’s possible
for at least a couple of teams to get in there.”
There’s no doubt that each of the five returning
All-League first-teamers believes his team can make it to
the NCAA tournament. Now all that’s left to do is convince
their teammates.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
“There’s this one big goal, one goal that I’ve had
from as soon as I came here that’s still untouched: we still
haven’t gotten to an NCAA Tournament,” Broekhoff said.
“All the personal accolades … I’ll cherish forever, but it’s
not an individual sport, it’s a team sport and for me to be
happy once I leave this place, it will be to make an NCAA
Tournament. We have a really good group of guys this year
and hopefully we can make it happen this year and cause a
few upsets and that sort of thing.
“That’s my driving force right now, to make the NCAA
Tournament. It’s not only pushing me, but I’m trying to
push my teammates to make them see that this is a great
opportunity, a great group of guys, a great coaching staff
and this year could be something pretty special.”
If there is one thing the populace wants to see from a
group of returning All-Leaguers, it’s that kind of determined
leadership. Rest assured, it is not in short supply among
this bunch.
“That’s one thing I’m priding myself on this year:
my role being a leader on and off the court,” Perry said.
“McCallum, what he’s done in Detroit has been amazing,
and Broekhoff, how he leads his Valpo team; I think we all
pride ourselves on that leadership role that we play on our
individual teams.”
Wardle echoed Perry’s sentiments regarding the
League’s Player of the Year and Tournament MVP. “I think you

think of Ryan Broekhoff and Ray McCallum right away. I
think they’re two veteran players that have put in a lot of
work and done a lot of damage,”Wardle said. “They’re raising
the level of their program and their team by being there.”
Although the younger McCallum led his team to a
Horizon League Tournament title and NCAA berth, the elder
McCallum proved that he knows how to be both a father and
a coach, praising his son’s ability while also pointing out that
he hasn’t reached his potential yet.
“He’s got to be an extension of the coach, relaying the
proper message to his teammates at all times. We’re very fortunate to have him returning as an experienced player now,”
the Titans coach said of his point guard/son. “His game is still
developing, but he’s moving in the right direction as a player,
as a leader, and that’s what’s so important for our team.”
And to his credit, the younger McCallum understands
what he needs to do to improve himself and his team. “Being a true point guard and being a leader,” McCallum said
of his plans for the season. “Just trying to make sure I score
when my team needs me to score, make plays and get guys
involved when my team needs me to do that and try to make
plays on defense.”
As a credit to the League, each of the returning
first-teamers takes that same approach: team first, lead by
example. Despite being one of the youngest juniors in the
country – he won’t turn 19 until Dec. 23 – Perry has taken
ownership of his Youngstown team, and it hasn’t gone
unnoticed.
“He raises the bar for everybody, every day,” Penguins
coach Jerry Slocum said of his star guard, a defensive wizard
who set a school record with 74 steals last season. “Even now,
coming back, he’s our best-conditioned athlete. Not only
does he make everybody better, but he makes everybody
work harder and that’s just a rare thing in today’s basketball
world, to have that full package.”
Perry doesn’t only know how to motivate. He can
change his playing style in-game, depending on what his
team needs that night. “He just figures out way to help
the team,” Slocum said. “There will be a lot of games that
he will have five or six assists and gets 12 or 14 points and
then there will be other nights when he’ll have 25 [points]
when we need it.”
That same attitude is displayed by Valparaiso’s unsung
hero, Van Wijk. Overshadowed by Broekhoff, Van Wijk is more
than happy to play second fiddle, just doing what his team
needs him to do to win.
“I want to do the best I can for my team,” Van Wijk said.
“I thanked my team for [the All-League honor]; I didn’t do
that, my team did it, because I can’t dribble up the ball and
score myself. I need someone to do that for me, to help and
pass and have confidence in me and I think I’ve created that
through the years. For [this] year, I just look at it again as what
I’m good at and knowing what my qualities are, trying to
improve at things I’m not as good as and just trying to help
the team becoming the best team we can.”
Drew certainly doesn’t take for granted the leadership
and humility displayed by his two All-Leaguers. “The great
thing is, we have a lot of upperclassmen, we have a lot of
mature players, so a lot of the motivation, they put upon
themselves,” Drew said. “They know what their goals are,
they know what they have to do to achieve them. It makes
my job a lot easier.”
Drew is expecting the same thing from his opponents
as well.
“To be completely honest, I think all five will be
extremely motivated. I don’t expect any of those five to be
complacent based off the personal success they had last
year,” Drew said. “I think all of them will be much, much better
players this year. It’s pretty exciting; it’s a pretty good crop
of guys. I think most of the country will know who a lot of
those guys are by the end of the season.”
That recognition would be no
doubt well-deserved, and something
the Horizon League would like to see
more of – but the best way to make
your players household names is to
send them to the NBA.
THE NEXT LEVEL
“Alec Brown is extremely skilled
and I know he’s a draft pick in a lot of
pre-draft boards,” Drew said of Green
Bay’s 7-1 center/forward with a growing
proficiency for the 3-pointer, one of the
Horizon League’s biggest professional
prospects in recent memory.
Brown is a freak-of-nature player,
tall and athletic – and could be a firstround draft pick once his collegiate
career ends.
“He’s a player you don’t have very
often in our League, a kid with that size
that can really play and has a high skill
level,” Wardle said. “I think the biggest
thing when it comes to Alec is the consistency when it comes to leadership
and when it comes to aggressiveness.
When he plays with a chip on his shoulder and has his mean, nasty face going,
he’s really tough.”
There’s that leadership word,
again. And for his part, Brown may be
the most humble among a crop of wellgrounded All-Leaguers.
“I’ll just try to do my best,” Brown
said. “I’m going to go out there and try Ray McCallum will be counted on for additional leadership as Detroit looks to defend its tournament title.

In addition to Brown and McCallum’s prospect status,
- Michael Raines
Broekhoff has drawn next-level attention. This past summer, the Valparaiso forward spent time with the Australian
national team, trying out for the Olympics Games. After
making it to the 15-man practice squad, Broekhoff didn’t
survive the final cut down to 12 players. That doesn’t mean
he didn’t benefit from the experience, however.
“I got to play in a series versus the Chinese national
team. It just kind of gives you a perspective of the next level:
how physical it is, how fast it is,” Broekhoff said. “It helps you
kind of see where you’re deficient in some areas. It allowed
me, during the summer, to work on a lot of things that might
not show up at the college level but might show up at the
next level – and things that do show up at the college level,
I was able to work on and refine leading up to the season.”
Brown realizes his professional future could be fast-approaching, and that it’s a good thing for the Horizon League.
“It’s definitely great for the league to get that exposure, showing everyone that we have those high-caliber
players who can play in the [NBA] someday,” Brown said.

2012-13 Men’s Basketball Preview
L
et’s cut to the chase: Butler has left the
Horizon League.
Entering the 2012-13 men’s basketball season,
however, the goals remain the same: compete for
the Horizon League regular season and tournament
championship.
Do that, and the team(s) representing the Horizon
League in the NCAA Tournament will be well prepared
to win into March, just as the Horizon League tournament champion has done in nine of the last 12 NCAA
Tournaments.
THE CHAMPIONS
Behind a new coach, two returning starters and
having lost a player to the Big Ten, Valparaiso was not
supposed to challenge for the Horizon League regular
season title.
Not only did the Crusaders do just that, they won
the League outright, reaching the finals of the Horizon
League Championship before losing to Detroit.
Now, the challenge for the Crusaders will be to
play with a season-long target on their backs. Valparaiso
brings back all five starters from last year’s team, including Player of the Year Ryan Broekhoff.
In his breakout junior season, Broekhoff led Valpo
with 14.9 points per game while pacing the Horizon
League with 8.5 rebounds per game. Broekhoff’s effort
last year helped him secure a place on the Australian
National Team, where he was one of just two players in
Boomers camp. Despite being one of
the last cuts from the Olympic squad,
Broekhoff returns to Valparaiso as the
League’s best version of a Swiss Army
knife – able to impact the game in a
variety of ways.
Last year, Broekhoff’s emergence was aided by the return to
health of Kevin Van Wijk. Limited
because of back troubles for two
seasons, Van Wijk found a way to
stay healthy last year, dominating in
the low post, hitting at a 61.7 percent
clip from the floor. Van Wijk’s efforts
led to a spot on the All-League First
Team after he put up 14.1 ppg.
With Bobby Copobianco and
Vashil Fernandez adding size to the
front court, Broekhoff should be able
to slide to his more natural ‘3’ position, while Alex Rossi adds increased
shooting depth after transferring
from California to be closer to home.
With all five starters returning,
head coach Bryce Drew ramped
up his non-conference schedule,
including trips to Saint Louis, New
Mexico, Murray State, Missouri State
and Nebraska.

post with junior Alec Brown.
In his sophomore year, Brown averaged 13.8 ppg,
8.2 rpg and turned in 89 blocks, breaking his own singleseason record and becoming Green Bay’s all-time leader
in the category in just two years.
With Brown commanding attention down low,
space is opened up for Brennan Cougill, Kam Cerroni
and Keifer Sykes. Cougill, at 6-foot-9 and 265 pounds,
presents an interesting matchup, as he can join Brown
in the post or play pick-and-roll on the three-point line
with Sykes.
Cerroni led the Horizon League in three-point
shooting, knocking down 46.5-percent of his attempts,
bumping up his scoring to 10.4 ppg in League play.
Sykes, meanwhile, spurred Green Bay’s run down
the stretch of the year, averaging 14.7 ppg and 4.8 apg
over the last 17 games of the season. While 5-foot-10,
Sykes was able to use his speed to consistently break
down opposing defenses, getting to the rim or dishing
to Brown, Cougill and Cerroni, among others.
Green Bay should also be bolstered by the return
of Daniel Turner, who went down with a torn ACL at the
new year. Turner’s rugged play on the interior helped
Brown and Cougill on the glass and should do much of
the same this season.
The Phoenix took a five-game winning streak into
the Horizon League Tournament last year, only to suffer
a 77-60 loss at Youngstown State in the tournament
opener. That same Penguins squad will be among the
contenders in the Horizon League this season.
For YSU, its 16-15 record last year represented its
best win total since the 2000-01.
Playing bombs away basketball, the
38.1 percent of the Penguins’ points
came via the three-pointer, where
YSU shot 38.1 percent on the year.
Blake Allen led the way, converting 42.9-percent of his attempts
and averaging 12.8 ppg. However, it
was Kendrick Perry who proved to
be the straw that stirred the drink
for the Penguins. Perry led the Horizon League with a 16.8 ppg and 2.4
steals per game average.
While Perry’s slashing game
and Allen’s outside shooting lifted
the Penguins, Damian Eargle
provided the much-needed inside
presence for YSU. Listed at just
6-foot-7, Eargle’s wingspan proved
problematic for opposing teams
throughout the year; Eargle’s 116
blocks set a new Horizon League
single-season record, and his 207
career blocks sit just 19 from the
conference career mark.
With the trio in tow, expectations are running high in northeastern Ohio, and head coach Jerry
Slocum has upgraded his schedule
accordingly, taking the Penguins
to Georgia, Duquense and South
Florida.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Two years ago, Cleveland
State head coach Gary Waters
relied on Norris Cole to lead the Vikings. Last year, it was
seniors D’Aundray Brown, Jeremy Montgomery and
Trevon Harmon who took the team to the NIT. This year,
with just one senior on the roster, Waters will turn the
roster over to his underclassmen, including sophomore
Anton Grady.
In just 21.2 minutes per game, Grady led Cleveland State in both offensive and defensive rebounding
percentage while posting an offensive efficiency rating
(105.1) that implies he could be the Vikings’ go-to player
this year. Whether or not that comes in the post (as it
did last year), or on more pick-and-roll sets remains to
be seen, but the respect for Grady was reflected in his
preseason Second Team All-League selection, making
him one of two sophomores on the team.
Tim Kamczyc is Waters’ lone returning starter
and will be counted on for continued high pick-and-roll
sets, in which his 46.0-percent three-point percentage
looms over opposing defenses. Who is running those
sets remains to be seen, as Sebasitan Douglas and
Charlie Lee each saw time in the backcourt last season
backing up Harmon.
While Waters’ team will be young, it will also be extremely athletic, with Marlin Mason, Junior Lomomba
and Trey Lewis all vying for playing time. Mason was
supposed to be a redshirt candidate last year, but Waters
needed the raw talent after a rash of injuries. In limited
minutes, Mason displayed that athleticism, averaging
3.7 ppg. Lomomba and Lewis both bring distinguished
resumes to Cleveland State after highly-productive high
school careers in Wisconsin and Michigan, respectively.
ON POINT
Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter is hoping lightning strikes twice. Two years ago, Kaylon Williams joined
the Panthers and immediately slid into the point guard

Now, Williams has graduated, leaving a big role to

Panthers after transferring, proved among the toughest
players in the Horizon League, averaging 10.8 ppg and

Milwaukee from Southeastern CC, sliding into the starting lineup and averaging 8.5 ppg and connecting on just

Anton Grady 
Preseason Second Team All-League
Cleveland State Notes:
•
•
Cleveland State goes from one of the most experienced teams in the Horizon League to
one of its youngest. The Vikings lost four starters off of last year’s returning Tim Kamczyc
to the lineup.
Sophomore Anton Grady was pegged as a breakout candidate by SI.com’s Luke Winn in
the offseason, as part of Winn’s annual “Breakout Sophomore Formula” projections. Listed
as Winn’s Sixth Man on the team, Winn wrote of Grady:
• “Grady was a monster in short spurts as a freshman, leading CSU in offensive and defensive rebounding percentage, block percentage, and posting a usage/efficiency ratio that suggests he can
assume a go-to-guy role if called upon.”
•
•
•
Senior Tim Kamczyc and sophomore Marlin Mason were among a group of eight that
took part in the Global Sports Academy’s (GSA) Summer Collegiate Basketball Tour to
Belgium and Holland. The CSU duo and the rest of the squad were overseas from Aug. 5-13
and played five games on the trip.
Among the four-man incoming class of freshmen are guards Junior Lomomba and Bryn
Forbes. Lomomba was the No. 4 ranked player in Wisconsin and the 38th-ranked small
forward in the country according to ESPN.com, while Forbes ranked as the No. 3 shooting
guard in Michigan by ESPN, the 12th best prospect in the state.
Regardless of personnel, Gary Waters’ team will hang its hat on defense. Last year, the
Vikings ranked fifth nationally in turnover percentage, forcing them on 25.3-percent of
opponents’ possessions. In the last four years, the Vikings have ranked no worse than 63rd
nationally, per KenPom.com.

Once again, Ray McCallum toured the country’s premier summer camps in the offseason.
McCallum participated in both the CP3 Elite Guard Camp and the Deron Williams Skills
Academy. In the 2011 offseason, McCallum took part in the Deron Williams Skills Academy,
LeBron James Skills Academy and was a member of USA Basketball’s World University
Game Team. Of McCallum’s performance at the Chris Paul Camp, Slam Magazine wrote:
• “The most athletic point guard in the camp was Detroit’s Ray McCallum, the best point guard that
the Horizon League has to offer. The McDonald’s All-American held offers from just about every
program in the country but opted to stay at home and play for his Pops. At CP3, he used his elite
strength and athleticism to quickly establish himself as the top rebounder of the group. He used
the aforementioned explosiveness offensively to explode to the rim and finish with contact. If
McCallum is able to improve on his shot from beyond the arc (he shot 24% from 3 last year), look
for him to follow Norris Cole and Shelvin Mack’s footsteps as the next Horizon League guard in the
NBA.”

In his first season with the Titans, Doug Anderson made an immediate impact upon rims
around the country. Anderson’s dunking prowess was featured both on and off the court,
with several dunks earning a place on SportsCenter’s Top 10.
A year after blowing out his knee five games into the year, Nick Minnerath returns to the
Detroit lineup. In his first four games of the season, Minnerath was averaging 15.0 points
and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Detroit adds a high-profile transfer to its lineup this year, as Juwan Howard, Jr. is eligible
after sitting out the 2011-12 season. Howard, Jr., averaged 9.3 points per game in his freshman year at Western Michigan, the third-highest total on the squad. Playing all 34 games
and starting two, Howard, Jr. added 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
A year after returning all of its letterwinners, Detroit will mix six newcomers into the mix
in 2012-13. A seventh, Carlton Brundidge, will sit out the year after transferring from
Michigan.

A year after having the 13th-youngest team in the nation, Brian Wardle’s squad has turned
into one of the most experienced, bringing back all five starters from last year’s team.
Of those five, only Daniel Turner missed extended time after an ACL injury at the end of
2011. In 14 games, the rugged forward was averaging 4.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per
game.
Alec Brown ended his sophomore year with a Green Bay single-season record 89 blocks,
including at least one block in 27 of 30 games. With 156 career blocks, Brown already owns
the Green Bay career record and is 70 shy of matching the Horizon League’s all-time record
of 226.
Sophomore Keifer Sykes helped fuel Green Bay’s midseason turnaround, as the Phoenix
went 6-2 to close the Horizon League regular season. In the final 17 games, Sykes led the
Phoenix in scoring at 14.7 points per game while dishing out 4.8 assists and shooting
49.7 percent from the floor. The Chicagoan scored in double figures 15 times, including a
stretch of 10 games in a row, and scored 20 or more points three times.

• The season that the young point guard compiled was among the best by a freshman in Green Bay’s
Division I history. Sykes’ 335 points were the third-most by a freshman in the Division I era and the
most since Tony Bennett scored 516. His 101 assists were the third-most in school history by a freshman, behind only Bennett’s 138 and Gary Grzesk’s 118 in 1992-93.
•
Junior Kam Cerroni ranked eighth nationally with a 66.7-percent true shooting percentage, per KenPom.com. The Phoenix will add another shooter, Cole Stefan, at the semester.
Stefan was ranked as the 54th ranked shooting guard nationally before attending LaSalle
in his freshman season. As a freshman, Stefan played 25 games, including one start, making three or more shots from long range in five different games.

2011-12 Results (7-23, 1-17 Horizon)
Loyola at the Colosseum 
Loyola Notes:
•
Loyola spent two weeks in Italy over the summer, taking part in classes, service projects,
sightseeing and playing four games throughout the country. In those four games, the
Ramblers went 3-1, adjusting to playing under the 24-second clock. ESPN took notice of
the Ramblers’ play in Italy, writing:
• Loyola (Ill.) returned from an Italy trip with some dramatic uptick in numbers. The Ramblers averaged a meager 57.2 points a game last season but on a 4-1 trip they averaged 82.3 points a game.
The Ramblers also hadn’t had a player average five assists a game since 2003. But Iowa transfer
Cully Payne handed out 9.3 assists in the four games. Porter Moser is hoping to see a turnaround
and the indication is that this trip may give the Ramblers the necessary bounce
•
Of the trip, senior Ben Averkamp told ESPN’s Scott Powers:
•
Loyola and Mississippi State will meet on Dec. 15 to mark the “Game of Change” that occurred 50 years ago between the teams. In the 1963 NCAA Tournament. Mississippi State, an
all-white team, was prohibited from playing integrated teams and had to sneak out of state
to face Loyola, which included four black starters. The game was considered a step forward
in the civil rights movement. Loyola defeated Mississippi State 61-51 and went on to win the
NCAA championship.
With 16 years of experience spread among 16 players, Loyola ranks as the seventh-youngest
team in the nation. Averkamp and Jordan Hicks provide the bulk of experience with seven
total years entering the 2012-13 season.
•
• “I understand they’re young and have a lot being thrown at them, but in the same respect for Cully
and I and especially Jordan, who has been here five years -- he’s been through everything -- we see
an importance to this year,” Averkamp said. “Hopefully, this trip to Italy springboards us for the
year.”

Milwaukee Notes:
•
The Panthers will play all of their home games at the on-campus Klotsche Center, which now
seats approximately 3,400 fans. A number of improvements to the facility are underway,
including the addition of video boards and digital signage. It was a move heralded by the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
• “A little more than three months into the job of fixing an athletic department, Andy Geiger is seeing
more clearly what he got himself into at UW-Milwaukee.
And the view for those who value UWM athletics is getting a little better by the day.
Already, he has gotten the men’s basketball team out of downtown and back on campus at the
Klotsche Center.”

Senior Demetrius Harris was an All-State selection in both football and basketball while
at Jacksonville High School in Arkansas. At 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, Harris had signed to play
football at Arkansas State before choosing basketball.
UWM must replace the production of All-League guard Kaylon Williams, and it appears that
junior college transfer Jordan Aaron will have the first crack. Aaron played the past two seasons at Southeastern Community College, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists
and 1.6 steals per contest his sophomore season.
Part of Milwaukee’s success last season came in locking down the three-point line. Opponents shot just 29.1 percent from beyond the arc, the eight-best defensive mark in the
nation last season. Overall, the Panthers’ effective defensive field-goal percentage of 46.1
percent ranked 44th in the country.

UIC Notes:
•
•
•
A year after bringing in nine newcomers to the roster, UIC adds eight newcomers to its ranks.
Overall, UIC returns 65 percent of its scoring from the 2011-12 campaign.
Senior Gary Talton was a Horizon League All-Newcomer Team selection last season after
leading UIC in scoring, field goals made (122), free throw percentage (.867), free throws
made (78) and assists per game (3.3).
UIC added three high-profile transfers in the offseason. Joey Miller (Eastern Illinois) and
Josh Crittle (Central Florida) will be immediately eligible for the Flames, while Kelsey Barlow (Purdue) will sit out this season. Miller scored 10.4 points per game in his freshman
season with Eastern Illinois and was named the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Freshman of
the Week on three occasions, while Crittle started 25 games at UCF. ESPN’s Andy Katz took
notice of the Flames’ additions, writing:
• “Howard Moore was an ambassador for UIC during the NBA draft combine. He was greeting NBA
personnel and celebrating the practice facility that was getting plenty of air time on ESPNU. Well,
Moore can’t exactly say the pre-draft camp being housed on his practice floor in early June was the
reason, but he is a believer that it helped land Central Florida transfer Josh Crittle. Crittle, who is
from Illinois, had one season left to play after transferring from Oregon and playing one season
with the Knights ... The Flames also picked up Eastern Illinois’ Joey Miller immediately after his
father, Mike, was fired as head coach. That means the Flames suddenly have two veteran players
-- one inside and one outside -- to go with returning leading scorer and point guard Gary Talton,
3-point shooter Danny Barnes, four-man Hayden Humes and 7-foot newcomer Matt Gorski.”

led the Flames in rebounding in 10-of the final 12 contests. Humes shot 41.8 percent from
three-point range last season, ranking sixth in the Horizon League.

Ryan Broekhoff 
2012 Player of the Year
Valparaiso returns all five starters from last year’s Horizon League regular season championship team, including 2012 Player of the Year Ryan Broekhoff.
Broekhoff spent part of the summer playing with the Australia Boomers, participating in
national team camp ahead of the Olympics and becoming one of the team’s last cuts ahead
of the 30th Olympiad.
Valparaiso’s front line will be bolstered by the addition of Bobby Capobianco and Vashil
Fernandez this year. Copobianco sat out last season after transferring from Indiana, where
he played in 57 games over two year, averaging 1.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Fernandez sat out last season after not being cleared, but played this summer for the Jamaican
National Team.
The Crusaders will play an ambitious non-conference schedule, traveling to Nebraska, Murray State, Saint Louis, New Mexico and Missouri State among other trips. The schedule made
ESPN’s Andy Katz take notice, writing:
• “Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew is doing everything he can to put together a possible at-large
schedule if the Crusaders don’t win the Horizon League automatic berth. Drew capped his schedule
with a road game at Atlantic 10 favorite Saint Louis. Drew had already said the Crusaders will play
at Murray State (OVC favorite) and New Mexico (MWC contender) in addition to possibly challenging games against Nebraska, Kent State, Oakland and Missouri State.”
•
Valparaiso will add three transfers to its roster, with Alex Rossi (California) receiving a waiver
to play immediately and Jordan Coleman joining the program after stints at Hawai’i and
Southwestern (Ill.) College. LaVonte Dority will be eligible at the semester after transferring
from South Florida. Dority was ranked as a top-50 point guard coming out of Foreman High
School in Chicago. Rossi was ranked as the 36th-best shooting guard nationally in the Class
of 2010.
