I'm sure you’re asking me what! Did you change the batteries in your smoke detector? This simple act could save your life. Too often we simply forget this extremely important function. In October you should have heard "change your clocks, change your batteries", I hope you did it! If you’re interested in helping out with our Burn Prevention Program, please call Elliot at 920-671-4708 or email him at [email protected]. Within a week, we will be having our 2016 Parade to Glory. This is an opportunity for our Clubs, Units, Ladies groups and Individuals to announce their donations to our fraternity and our philanthropy. If you haven’t made your final decision on a donation, I would like to remind you to consider supporting the Trustees Rainy Day Operations Fund. We a currently taking monies out of this fund to pay the bills at Beja for the remainder of the year. Please make sure to make your RSVP’s for dinner we want to make sure we have enough food for everyone. Cost is $5 to help offset our expense. Lady Dawn and I will be preparing and coordinating this meal as our special thank you to all of you for what you have done for us and Beja this year. We will also be announcing the Club of the Year, Unit of the Year and Shriner of the Year at this meeting. Our Fall Ceremonial is scheduled at the NEW Masonic Center for Saturday, November 5th. Gary Fehl, is our Fall Ceremonial Honoree. Current membership numbers have us at a minus for 2016. What a great honor to Gary if we can make this fall ceremonial a large success with a large class and in turn make our Temple a Gold (positive growth) for 2016. Currently there are 257,012 Shriners throughout the world. This year current membership is 12,000 less than last year. You can make a difference. New members would be great, but please don't forget those members we have lost. Let’s get our brothers back into this great fraternity. It’s not too late, we will be processing petitions up to the day of the ceremonial. It’s not too late to sell sportsman’s raffle tickets. The money raised from the raffle goes directly into the operations fund for 2017. With all the comments we have received as well as the audit from the State, we made a Continued in the next column few minor changes. This year we are calling it a Sportsman's Raffle. Once again the winner will receive a gift card in the amount to be used at Gander Mountain for any sportsman purchase. Each ticket can only win once, so there will be twenty different ticket winners. The cost of the tickets are $20. The drawing is on Saturday, November 12th at Beja. You can get your tickets at Beja. Please help our Chief Rabban Greg Habeck with his 2017 budget by selling tickets and making this year’s raffle an overwhelming success. I would like to congratulate everyone who helped out with this year’s haunted house. The Green Bay Fear was a wonderful success in many ways. Just think how many people experienced a little of what we do here at Beja. From the staff who managed the haunt, to the volunteers who served as actors for the haunt, to the Nobles and Ladies who helped out parking cars and taking tickets, THANK YOU. Next time you’re at Beja, please look at our new Data projector. This was a donation to Beja from our Haunters Guild. Fraternally, Eugene “Gene” Reece Jr. B Shrine hrine Beja eja S Shrine S hrine s e i d a L Greetings Ladies, I hope your finding this fall season enjoyable. The colors are coming out and there will be a short window for the beautiful scenery free for our taking. I again would like to congratulate the Daughters of the Nile and the Ladies of Beja for their wonderful fashion show. I had the wonderful opportunity to represent Gene at the Honored Ladies luncheon. This was an absolutely wonderful opportunity to visit with our honored Ladies. The meal was fantastic and I would like to thank Nick Brosig for making the lasagna. The entertainment was great, Thanks Woody!, and I would also like to personally thank Jim Vandehey for his donation to help fund this year’s event. In October, Mary Habeck and I attended the Tripoli Fashion show and had the opportunity to visit with all of the Ladies of the Tripoli Divan. This was a great opportunity to learn what the Ladies of Tripoli do together. The fashion show was a lot of fun and we had some great conversations. One of the highlights of this year is meeting the ladies from all of our sister temples. At our October meeting Chief Rabban Greg Habeck and Lady Mary presented their 2017 Beja year. It looks like a lot of fun and excitement. I would encourage you to look at his calendar and get as many of these events on your own calendar. Participation at these events not only makes them more fun, but it brings us all closer together in support of Beja and Shriners Hospitals for Children. JOIN OUR E-MAIL LIST www.bejapotentate.com Our Fall Ceremonial is upon us. The Ceremonial will be held on Saturday November 5th. I invite you to join us for the afternoon as we welcome in our newest Noble’s Ladies. We will be meeting at Beja at noon for a lunch. A short program will be presented highlighting our hospitals and the care we give. We will then be leaving Beja to go to a local craft show. We will return to Beja to join our Nobles for cocktails and hors d'œuvre and the Fezzing ceremony. I hope you can join us. Next time you come to Beja, please look at the new bench out front by the main entrance. This bench was purchased with the money collected at our December 2015 meeting on behalf of Zilpha Kerr. Michelle Pauli asked the ladies to support this concept. With the money, we purchased the bench and made a donation to the Green Bay Auxiliary. In closing, I hope you can join us at our November meeting and the Parade to Glory. This is a great opportunity to highlight the work that everyone does for Beja and our hospitals. With Love, Lady Dawn CHAPLAIN’S CORNER November brings us a special national holiday called Thanksgiving Day. It will be Thursday, November 24, 2016. Its roots go back to the earliest English settlers who had survived a devastating first year in this new land. The second year was a fruitful year in providing abundantly for the needs of the people. It moved them to proclaim a Day of Thanksgiving and celebration for the goodness and blessing of God. For us in this year 2016, I adopt the following from the writing of Brett Younger to share with you: “It is not what we get that determines the quality of our lives; it is how we interpret what we get that counts. Life doesn’t come to us directly; it is mediated through our points of view, our mind-sets, our assumptions. The attitude of thanksgiving is recommended by many sources that talk about a life of quality. Thanksgiving is the door to a sacred life. Gratitude alters our priorities and makes us live gratefully. Thanksgiving encompasses our whole lives. Gratitude points our minds in God’s direction and lifts us out of the fog of self-absorption. It broadens our perspective and strengthens our confidence in God’s faithfulness. It enables us to rejoice, even when life is hard. Gratitude is the secret of hopeful people. If we live in gratitude we will ask God to inspire our thoughts, remove our bitterness, broaden our perspectives, make us grateful, be with us in our listening and in our speech, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of morning and in the weariness of evening. Praying with thanks-giving leads us to recognize God’s grace and to rejoicing in God’s presence. Whether you are feeling happy as a turkey who has made it to the day after Thanksgiving or like you are locked up in some prison with no release in sight, remember the goodness of God and give thanks.” Yours in the faith, Rev. Myron E. October Beja Meeting Photos News from Shriners Hospital Chicago Meet Cody, When Cody Conroy was born with a bi-lateral cleft lip and cleft palate, his mother wasn’t sure where to turn for help. The hospital near their Rapid City, South Dakota home did not have the specialists onsite to perform the surgeries or offer the follow-up care Cody needed. So, until age nine Cody’s speech was extremely delayed. A large group of Nobles, Ladies, and guests were present to hear the plans for the 2017 Beja year. “I did not like talking to or being around people. I was very shy and aware of my speech condition, and it was hard,” said Cody. Working as a hairdresser, Cody’s mother had a client who asked about her son’s condition. She went on to say that she knew Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago had an excellent cleft lip and palate and plastic surgery team, and the Conroys soon booked an appointment. Chief Rabban Greg Habeck presented his program for next year. Cody Conroy, now age 20, visits the Shriners CLP and plastics team Cody underwent several surgeries at the hospital, including a bone graft surgery to repair his cleft palate, and reconstructive surgery on his nose, teeth and mouth. He followed up with speech therapy at home and school and was soon speaking very clearly – for the first time in his life. “I never thought I would speak normally or that my condition would get better,” said Cody. “And wow, it sure did.” Orthopaedics Plastic Surgery/Cleft Lip and Palate Rehabilitation/Spinal Cord Injury Noble Dave Gerlach and Lady Carol greeted the membership. The multi-disciplinary plastics team at the Chicago Shriners Hospital includes speech language pathologists, audiologists, plastic surgeons, orthodontists, nurses and nurse practitioners, care coordinators, ENT surgeons, and more. The goal is to look at the needs of the child in their entirety and offer a treatment plan that is individualized for each patient, which is what Cody says he is grateful for. “My advice to any child in my situation is for them to know that it will get better, and the people at Shriners can help. They do excellent, excellent work, and I’m thankful for how they’ve changed my life.” Submitted by, John Sage PP, SHC-C Rep. GREEN BAY SHRINE CLUB DENNIS PAULI – PRESIDENT Greetings to all, October came and left in what seemed to be a bit of a rush.. All the Clubs and Units should be discussing and thinking about their contribution to the Parade to Glory at the November meeting. The Potentate and the Trustees have been pushing for donations to the “Rainy Day” fund. With November fast approaching, everyone should be thinking about candidates for the Fall Ceremonial on November 5th. Don’t forget about our Sportsman’s Raffle (gun raffle). The 12th is the day of the drawing. You do need a ticket to win. Beja needs lots of tickets sold to enable us to give our new Potentate a good financial cushion to start 2017 with. Try to be good as Christmas and Santa are not far away. He will be watching to see who is naughty and who is nice. Don’t go for the lump of coal in your stocking. Beja’s oldest Shrine Club continues to meet at the Stadium View every Friday at noon. Social time begins at 11:30 AM. Lunch is served at 12:00 noon. The Club invites everyone to come and join us. Bring your Lady along and have lunch with us. Note: There will be no meeting the day after thanksgiving. Fraternally, Dennis Pauli, President Now is the time to take a personal inventory of your accomplishments as a Shriner during the last year. Those of you who sat on the sidelines and guarded the water bucket should be really ready to perform next year. Those of you who got in the game and did what Shriners are supposed to do are planning for next years fun, fellowship and participation. Every one has 24 hours,1,440 minutes and 86,400 seconds in each day. How do you spend them? How many have you devoted to being a Shriner? Once they are spent there is no chance to get any back. Take a good look at your plan and make your 2017 New Year’s resolution early. We need you now. Membership numbers are falling. If you are one of many who need something to hide behind, join our Krazy Kop Unit and we will put you in a Keystone Kop Uniform with a red nose and beard or mustache or a convict suit, to hide behind while you move down the parade routes arresting parade watchers and putting them in jail for a short ride and then a jail break. The Krazy Kops wish all a Happy and joyful Thanksgiving. Think Shrine and Think KRAZY KOPS.
