BABY BOTTLES FOR LIFE!
After all Masses on November 6 and 7 members of St Mary Parish will be
collecting the baby bottles that were collected in early October. The baby
bottles were distributed to raise funds for Woman’s Choice Services, a
Catholic organization dedicated by the Bishop of Joliet. Woman’s Choice
Services is a life centered network, founded as a concrete response to
Pope John Paul II’s Gospel of Life. The center focuses on showing women,
men and families that they have the choice of life for their families and it
provides them with counseling, information and support. Please visit

have lost your baby bottle, cash donations are also accepted.

MICHELLE RUNS THE MARATHON!
Joe Sluis’ daughter Michelle challenged herself to run the Chicago Marathon to show that she “still has it” as she turns 40 years old. Michelle
completed the marathon in just under 6 1/2 hours two days before her
40th birthday. Sister Ann flew in from Minnesota for the event and the
family was present at trackside to cheer her on. The picture at left shows
Michelle as she passes the halfway mark of the race. Sister Ann ran alongside for a short while. Many of her coworkers at AT&T cheered her on
along the track. Mom and dad Sluis are very proud of her.

Many of our brother knights from the Mokena and St
Jude councils have participated in the Men’s Fraternity.
None of the attendees have found it to be a poor program—all the negative criticism has come from those
who have not been involved in it. This ecumenical program teaches Christian values for men to help them grow
in relationships at home, at work and in the Church. You
will find that both programs help you to become a better
man, husband and Man of God. There are presently two
programs in session:
“Winning at Work and at Home” meets every Saturday morning at St Jude’s church from 6:15 AM until

“The Great Adventure” meets every Saturday morning 6:30 until 8:00 AM at Little Joe’s Restaurant on

MONUMENT TO THE UNBORN
As is customary at almost all Catholic churches in the United States, there is a large Monument to the Unborn at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs near Auriesville, New York. The monument was placed
by the Knights of Columbus and is shown above. The Mohawk River is in the background.

The great church at Auriesville, known as “The Coliseum”, commemorates the deaths by continuous torture and eventual murder of three great Jesuits. The Priests were captured in the mid 1600’s by Mohawk
warriors of the Iroquois nation. The Mohawks captured them during their ministries to the Huron tribe of
the Algonquin who lived along the shores of Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. Mohawk warriors brought 22
captured Christian Huron warriors, women and children with several Frenchmen and Jesuit brothers to
their village located where the great church stands now. Captives were used as slaves and torturedusually until they died. Relief by being burned alive was rarely granted.
The most famous of the priests was Father Isaac Jogues who was able to escape from the Mohawk with
the aid of a Dutch merchant in what is now Albany. Father Jogues escaped while barely alive and after his
right index finger and thumb had been chopped and bitten off by his torturers. He was able to return to
his native France where he recuperated. He asked for and was granted permission by the Pope to consecrate the host without the use of the thumb and index finger of his right hand and then insisted on returning to the new world where he was eventually killed by the Mohawk on October 18, 1646.
A total of eight Jesuit priests were martyred while evangelizing the Algonquin and the Iroquois during the
seventeenth century—three at Auriesville and five near Midland, Ontario. Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint Rene
Goupil and Saint Jean DeLalande, along with the five priests murdered near Midland were canonized byPope Pius XI on June 29, 1930. “Our Lady of Martyrs” is the shrine of the “Americans”

THE SHRINE OF CHRIST’S PASSION
Catholic “Relevant Radio” is sponsoring a trip to the “Shrine of
Christ’s Passion” in St John, Indiana on October 30. You will be
picked up by bus at the Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church
at 146th and Will Cook Road at 11:00 AM. Lunch will be served
at 12:30 PM followed by a walk of the shrine trail, which is a
beautiful life sized “stations of the cross”. Attendees will pray the
“Divine Mercy Chaplet” at 3:00 PM and attend Mass at the new
St John the Evangelist church at 4:30 PM. Buses will bring you
