Potentate’s Column
Commitment to the Future
At our Stated Mee ng in
September, we had a hard choice
to make: raise our dues by $35
per year to stabilize our Temple’s
financial security or find more ways to
significantly cut our budget to avoid
an increase. There were legi mate
posi ons on both sides of the issue.
Over the past three years, we had
cut our opera ng budget by over
30%. Could we cut more? At what
cost to our services? There was also
D. Michael Wallach
concern
for the impact of the increase.
Potentate
With the average age of our Temple
membership being seventy years of age, an increase would
be expected to be problema c for some. By the same token,
to reduce the increase to older members would mean to shi
the difference to younger members in order to raise the funds
needed with the proposal, which would provide a disincen ve
for retaining and recrui ng young members in the future.
Prior to the mee ng, the sense that I had gained from
many discussions was that many members intended to vote for
the dues increase resolu on but out of a sense of resigna on,
i.e. “we go a do what we go a do”. While this foretold a likely
approval of the resolu on, I was concerned that we would
be doing so by default rather than by design. Therefore, at
the close of the discussion on the resolu on, I asked the
members to use their vote not as an expression of resigna on
but as one of commitment to our future. A er all, we did not
have to do anything. If we chose, we could just enjoy each
other’s company for a while, mourn our mutual losses, and,
in the end, close the doors like many other civic and fraternal
organiza ons. We “don’t go a do anything.” However, I urged
that if we want to send a message to ourselves, to the rest of
our members and to our community that we believe in the
principles of Masonry and the Shriners Creed, that we believe
in being compassionate and caring for each other as brothers
and to children in need of medical care, and to being able to
do this for the future, then vote yes to this resolu on and do
so by a wide margin of approval. By our vote, we chose to send
the message of commitment to our future, 100 votes in favor
and only 7 opposed.
Let us move forward from this point, rededicated to
the growth of our fraternity and to the support of our great
hospitals. As members of Shriners Interna onal, we are part
of the strongest fraternity in the world. As Shriners we are
dedicated to suppor ng the greatest philanthropy in the
world, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Let’s do what Shriners
do best—have fun, helping kids! And let’s spread the word!
Yours in the Faith, Michael Wallach
