SPHS Vision 100% of SPHS students will graduate!
Motto - SPHS
Where tradition meets excellence!
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the start of another exciting year at St. Petersburg High School. I look forward to
greeting all the returning Green Devils as well as welcoming our freshmen class, the class of 2020,
to the landmark high school in Pinellas County. The reputation of SPHS is grounded on academic
achievement, tradition and great school spirit. Although we have lost a few long time members of
the SPHS staff to retirement, our core staff remains intact providing important continuity for the
upcoming year. We are very excited about the start of our new Hospitality and Tourism Academy. This
program will provide a great opportunity for students possibly interested in a career in Hospitality
and Tourism in the future.
Regardless of changes in staff or policy, what will never change is our dedication to excellence
which is synonymous with the Green Devils. Please read the newsletter thoroughly as it contains
important information. In addition, please make note of the freshmen orientation on Saturday, August
6th from 9:00am to 11:00am. At the orientation, freshmen can pick up their schedules, buy locks,
and purchase other school items. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about any
aspect of the school. We are committed to creating an environment where all students thrive.
Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of
school on Wednesday, August 10th.
Go Green Devils!

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
STUDENT PICK-UP PROCEDURES
Parents that need to pick-up their child early from school can write a note that morning and have their child
go to Student Services in room 135 for a Permit to Leave slip. This alleviates any wait time for you when you
come to get your child.
If you call or come in, please understand that we need time to get the student for you. Please allow at least
30 minutes. This will give the school the opportunity to look up the student’s schedule and send for them to meet
you in the front office. Parents, it is important that we check the driver’s license of anyone picking up your student
early from school. This will be done to ensure the safety of your child.
ABSENCES
Congratulations to our March Students of the
Month, Surrie Hammond and Marquay Pearson.
They were nominated by Ms. Avery-Wright and
Ms. Swenson.
If you are absent from school, phone calls (or written excuses if there is no phone) from the parent/guardian
to the Attendance Office (ext. 2017) are required within 48 hours of the absence. The information should include
the student’s name, the reason for the absence, and the parent/ guardian’s name and telephone number. A parent
may excuse 5 days in a report period, further absences cannot be excused without a doctor’s note. Absences
should be for the following reasons: student illness, family emergency, death in family, medical appointments,
and religious holidays.
Note: The Florida Legislature has enacted requirements that schools report to the Department of Highway Safety
and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) the names of students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements. This refers
to students who accumulate 15 unexcused absences (excludes out-of-school suspension) within 90 calendar days.
Students who fail to satisfy attendance requirements will be INELIGIBLE for driving privileges.

MENTORS
St. Petersburg High School needs mentors. A mentor
is a caring, compassionate adult who chooses to devote their
time to a young person, offering them support, guidance,
and encouragement. Mentoring sessions range from 30-60
minutes and occur at the school during school hours. The
days and times of mentoring sessions are arranged between
the mentor and mentee depending on their individual
schedules and classes. As a result, mentoring is convenient
for both students and mentors. If you can donate one hour
per week, you can change a life by helping a child build a
solid foundation of values, establish goals, improve their
academic and life skills, while developing their self-esteem
and confidence. For more information about mentoring at
St. Petersburg High School please contact Suzanne Pace,

CONGRATS MR. TARROU
SPHS’s own Prof Rob Bob, as he is affectionately known not only by his students and followers, has
gone viral. Two years ago, Rob Tarrou who has been teaching a wide array of math classes at SPHS for the
last 20 years, devised a way, outside of school hours, to assist his students who were in need of review or
who may have been absent on a day that a mathematical concept was introduced. He began videoing his
lessons and posting them on YouTube. He quickly realized that not only were SPHS
students benefitting from his innovative tutorials, but people from around the world.
To date, Mr. Tarrou has created 582 videos covering Algebra 1 through Calculus
1 and some of Calculus 2, and AP Statistics. YouTube recently sent him the coveted
Silver Play Button Award for accruing over 100,000 subscribers (followers). Since
then the number has risen to 113,000 from over 200 countries and 14,000,000 total
views, the top five countries being US, Canada, Philippines, India, UK in that order.
Mr. Tarrou’s recent endeavor has been to add
closed captioning to each of the videos to meet the
needs of audiences who might be hearing impaired, or
for whom English is a second language so they can be
translated into another language, or even students who
want to take notes during the video lectures. He has
added captioning to nearly 250 videos but still has quite
a bit more typing to do to complete the feat.
Anyone who might be interested in helping him
type transcripts can learn more by clicking on the
following link: https://www.youtube.com/c/profrobbob.
While there, make sure to click on one of his videos to
experience, first-hand, his unique, high energy teaching
style and signature introduction of BAM!!

these deadlines.

opportunity to become more aware of SAT directions and questions. The Student Search Service provides
students the opportunity to receive information from colleges and universities. Students will be able to
enter scholarship competition from the National Merit Corporation.
Juniors are also encouraged to start the college search process. College visits may start during second
semester of their junior year. See above senior information.

ST PETE HIGH STUDENT
PHOTO SELECTED
FOR COUNTYWIDE
ENVIRONMENTAL
CAMPAIGN
A photo taken by St. Petersburg High School
student J.C. Pritchett III is the centerpiece
of Pinellas County’s 2016 Watershed:
LiveWorkPlay public outreach campaign. Taken
on St. Pete Beach, the photo was the winner of
this year’s watershed photo contest, which was
open to Pinellas County high school students.
Teens were asked to take a photo of where they
live, go to school or play and post it to Instagram using #wtrshd. A committee that included high school students
chose the winning photo.
J.C. won a canoe trip for six at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg. Watershed outreach was one of
the projects that the Pinellas County Youth Advisory Committee chose for this year. Projects included a series
of educational posters and videos to raise awareness about the importance of Pinellas County watershed and
what residents can do to protect their waterways.

WELCOME NEW
CONSTRUCTION TEACHER
Let me first say that I am excited to be joining
the SPHS team, and eager to begin the 2016-2017
school year. I look forward to this being my final
port in a career voyage that has been as diverse as
it has been rewarding. My early experience was
primarily in industry of South Florida, where while
running my own electrical and contracting company
I was fortunate to make lifelong friends and business
contacts that would later benefit the educational
programs I would aide in developing. I spent nearly
20 years in trades before having the opportunity to
discover my passion in teaching. I have been blessed
to have been a part of, and even create, some fantastic
vocational programs that have been recognized
nationally by both my peers in education as well as
business partners throughout the community. My
proudest of these accolades however, is undoubtedly
my recognition and nomination as a Golden Apple
Teacher on two separate occasions. It was an honor
that would not have been possible without the support
of not only students and colleagues, but that of my
family and friends.
In addition to my eagerness to begin work, I
am also joyous to return to the west coast of Florida.
The St. Petersburg area holds some of my fondest
memories, including teaching my sons to sail
around the Tampa Bay area and weekends with my
family at The Pier. When I’m not in the classroom
or involved with other school activities, I enjoy
spending time with my wife of over 30 years, and
our 3 grandchildren, all of whom are little sailors in
training. Finally, allow me to say thank you to all those
who have already given me such a warm welcome,
and to say that I look forward to meeting you all.
Sincerely, Ronald Wray
