Since the release of 2013’s ‘Howlin’ Jagwar Ma have played sold out shows across the
world and supported the likes of Tame Impala, The xx and Foals, filling festival tents and
clubs alike with their explosive, hypnotic live performances, not to mention legendary DJ
sets - most recently illustrated through their televised Park Stage performance at
Glastonbury, and a raucous closing DJ set at the Crows Nest the same weekend.
Now the song-writing duo of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jono Ma, singer and
guitarist Gabriel Winterfield return with their second album ‘Every Now & Then’.

The new record returns to the melody soaked nods to club culture and instantaneous
vocal hooks they’ve become well known for, but has also seen them employ their passion
for the Beastie Boys, citing this eclectic album as their ‘Paul’s Boutique’. Overall this
stunning record encapsulates the band at their most entrancing and anthemic – a wig out
of oscillating acid bassline, ricocheting dub-fused guitars and heady pop psychedelia
bathed in strobe-lit sonics.
It was self-produced and recorded in the United Kingdom, Australia and France, then
tweaked and mixed with the assistance of some of their brightest contemporaries, James
Ford (Florence and The Machine, Arctic Monkeys), Blue May (Kwes, Kindness), Ewan
Pearson (LCD Soundsystem, Chemical Brothers) and David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs,
Glass Animals).

Prog Awards 2016 ‘Limelight Award Winner’
Garnering comparisons to John Grant and Lana Del Rey, The Anchoress's concept driven
compositions have been the talk of the music press in 2016. PROG magazine - who've
nominated her for best-newcomer at their awards - went as far as proclaiming her debut
album as "...Kate Bush's 'Hounds Of Love' updated for the 21st century."

Her singles have received heavy rotation from BBC 6Music and lit up the web, reaching
number 2 on the HypeMachine and number 11 on AppleMusic's video chart. The
Anchoress' debut album has been lauded by the music press, racked as one of HMV's "best
albums of 2016" and has found fans in the likes of Peter Gabriel (who selected it for his
album club), and the Manic Street Preachers, whom she supported and duetted with on
'Little Baby Nothing' at this summer's Eden Sessions.
The new 2 CD edition follows a run of summer dates, including a sold-out London headline
show, festival sets at Latitude and WOMAD, headlining the BBC stage at Great Escape. The
Anchoress has also appeared on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, BBC Radio 3's The Verb,
been interviewed by MOJO and The Guardian, and now finds herself nominated in this
year's PROG Awards best newcomer category.
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, PhD & producer Catherine Anne Davies (who also plays
in the live line-up of Simple Minds) sums up her album's overall concept as, "Partly a
concept album narrated by the titular potboiler author, partly a series of imaginary
character pieces, and partly a deeply personal outpouring from someone who's been
through a fair amount of personal hell."
Whichever way you choose to describe The Anchoress' compelling debut 'Confessions Of A
Romance Novelist '(co-produced by Mansun's frontman Paul Draper) one thing's for

PROG AWARDS 2016 ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’.
Formed in 2010 in St Petersburg Russia,’ iamthemorning’ features pianist Gleb Kolyadin
and the charismatic vocals of Marjana Semkina. The band self released their debut
album in 2012 before signing to Kscope and releasing 'Belighted' their debut for the
label in September 2014.
As with 'Belighted', the engineering and mixing on 'Lighthouse' was handled by Marcel van
Limbeek (Tori Amos) and self produced by Gleb and Marjana. The album also features
guest musicians Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) on drums, Colin Edwin
Porcupine Tree) on bass and additional vocals on the album's title track by Mariusz Duda
(Lunatic Soul, Riverside).
'Lighthouse' is a rich and eclectic album, with echoes of classical music, the Canterbury
scene, northern folk, jazz and electronic sounds.
Recorded across London, Moscow & St Petersburg, the core instrument of the band, the
grand piano, was recorded in Mosfilm Studios Moscow, the largest and oldest studios in
Russia. Founded in 1920, Mosfilm is renowned for recording orchestras for soundtracks for
the most famous Soviet-era films, including works by Tarkovsky and Eisenstein.
'Lighthouse' is a story of the progression of mental illness. The album takes the listener
through the stages with the story's central character - her attempts to fight it, temporal
remission leading to a final breakdown. Lyrically, the album has been inspired by the
works and lives of Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath.
Album artwork for 'Lighthouse' was created by watercolour artist Constantine Nagishkin
who the band have previous collaborated with on covers.
'Lighthouse' will be released on CD presented in a digipak with 16 page colour booklet.

The new album of inspired blackened metal with an injection of traditional heavy metal
influence from Norway's finest.
Norwegian duo Darkthrone return with their first new studio material since 2013's
triumphant 'The Underground Resistance'; the album becoming the band's most
successful release in recent years. A new heavy metal odyssey now awaits as Fenriz and

between 1988-1990. Nocturno Culto carries out vocal duties across all tracks on the
release, with mastering once again handled by Jack Control at Enormous Door.
Darkthrone began in the late 80's as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through
technical death/doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world
& one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene, as well as inspiring a whole
generation of metal bands.

Direct from the Parisian overground, French pop connoisseurs La Femme will release
their second album Mystère this September. La Femme have made a huge mark on
modern Paris's cultural landscape, by engraining in their music the two sides of the city :
the glamour and the grit.
Since the release of their debut album Psycho Tropical Berlin, their rise has only gained
momentum with fans including directors Jacques Audiard and Romain Gavras to legends
Jean Michel Jarre and Hedi Slimane as well as a growing young audience (they won French

compendium of short stories describing loves and losses and each song breaks down
language barriers through an inventive and astute knack for melody.
The band's chic retro-futurist surf-pop sound possesses the same dose of glamorous punk
stomp as before, but this time around it's layered with an elegant fusion of influences
from Ennio Morricone, Marie Et Les Garcons's disco-rock touch and the lysergic
romanticism of The Velvet Underground. Through increased use of strings and further
exploration of sound, Mystère also incorporates the band's new love of oriental sounds,
Turkish disco, Tuareg blues, medieval psychedelia to mainstays Brian Eno and Pink Floyd.
They will be back in the UK on November 17th, headlining Sheperd's Bush Empire.

ARMS is the 7th Studio album from the Dublin based rock group Bell X1. Their first 6

Recorded in Dublin & Donegal by the group and Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Soak) the
album was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi, Frightened Rabbit) in Bridgeport, CT
and it sounds like nothing else in their canon. The depth and width, the colours and
shades, are familiar, but there's a new space and sense to the songs which speaks volumes
about what the band have achieved.
The songs here possess a shabby grace and soft-focus elegance, but there's also a bruised,
bittersweet, romantic mood throughout. Melancholic and lovelorn in places for sure, but
also spirited, determined, bolshie, and optimistic by turns. It's what a band should be
doing at this stage of their career.

When two best friends start a band, songs get filled with inside jokes. In My Head takes
the listener on a journey of Andreya Casablanca and Laura Lee's friendship, their life,
and a step further into the world of GURR.
Having met in an American Studies class in Berlin, and after spending time in the US
together, the US West coast sound was an obvious influence on their music, but Andreya
and Laura draw from a wide set of pop culture references and personal experiences for
their debut album. How to deal with one's own ignorance (first single release Moby Dick),
let yourself go and have nights that turn into mornings (Breathless), or deal with the loss
of love through someone else's perspective (Yosemite). Instead of telling stories of how it
was, the two friends want to create a world of characters, stories and feelings everyone
can relate to - and everyone can tell in their head for themselves.
First Wave Gurrlcore they call their own genre, always with a slight and acknowledging
nod to riot girl culture and yet stressing that they want to invent their own style - they pair
straightforward garage rock tunes with more psychedelic and wave elements on their
debut album. "We didn't start making music because of Kathleen Hanna," explains singer
Andreya Casablanca. "Musically we were more influenced by bands like Gun Club, Echo &
the Bunnymen, the B52s or classics like the Ramones and Beatles."

With Small Town Water Tower, mercurial singer-songwriter John Southworth
has countered Niagara's much-lauded melancholia with a revitalizing, eerily
deceptive pop album.
Fully embracing modern 21st century recording techniques, Southworth has transformed
his uniquely antiquated style, somehow bridging the vast, impenetrable gulf between
Tame Impala and Burt Bacharach to forge a new fluid and cohesive stamp - part future
shock, part ghost - at once strangely contemporary and anachronistic.
Merging disparate sources has consistently been a signature of the UK-born, Canadianraised songwriter. Now, combined with a lyrical view equal parts surreal and realist, this
singular trademark glows irrepressibly. "I'm not sure exactly what it is I've made," says
John, "some kind of conversation between the new and old world I hope." Expressing an
unsettled, dreamlike vision of lives in crisis, amidst species and eras fast disappearing,
Small Town Water Tower (his 10th full-length, produced by Derek Hoffman) sounds like
nothing in Southworth's previous canon, nor in the current pop-sphere - a dizzying,
cinematic and brilliantly crafted event.
The American and Canadian double-sided Niagara (Tin Angel) was Southworth's most
successful release to date, earning exceptional praise - including Album of the Year 2014
honors by Rolling Stone Germany and Canada's National Post - while firmly establishing his
reputation as a singer-songwriter of rare ability. Since his orchestral-pop debut Mars
Pennsylvania (1998 Bar None), he has recorded a succession of uncompromising, genredefying records, including most recently Spiritual War Cassette Tape (2011 - recorded on a
Sony Cassette corder), Failed Jingles for Bank of America and Other U.S Corporations (2012
featuring actual unused jingles) and the psychedelic cabaret-operetta, Easterween (2012).
His songs have been written for and/or covered by Canadian artists Buck 65, Sarah Slean,
Martin Tielli, Hawksley Workman, Veda Hille, Jully Black and THOMAS.

Since 1996 Wisecräcker invite the whole world to their ultimate SkaPunk party. Twenty years
ago it started in Hanover/Germany as a big fun - presented by a wild bunch of musicians for a
small but loyal fan base, but over the years Wisecräcker became an authority in the
international SkaPunk scene.
The six musicians around charismatic singer Alexander "Mendez" Mende played gigs in Sweden,

After signing his recording contract in the shadow of William Blake's grave in London, it was only a matter
of time before this curious artefact would be brought into the world. It's a record that started life in the
Hollywood Hills with a detour through the Mojave Desert, a cabin in Nashville, and a gothic church on the
Yorkshire moors, and that ended up being recorded at Childwickbury Manor in St Albans, the former home
of director Stanley Kubrick. It's an ungodly collision of big country sound and misty isle musings.
Engineered by Jack Hobbs in a studio adjacent to Kubrick's study, it allowed Saint Leonard to absorb the
creative energy that has bounced around the building. Putting sounds down in the place where parts of famed
movies The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut were filmed, as well as drawing inspiration from filmic memorabilia
that has found resting places there, has lent an ominous quality to the record.
In the past few years Leonard has toured the UK and USA supporting and playing shows with Ryan Adams,
Father John Misty, Bob Dylan, The Strokes, Beck, The Libertines, Billy Bragg and Wolfmother.
The live band then further honed their skills and the songs through extensive touring and festival appearances
(including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, The Great Escape, SXSW and British Summer Time in Hyde Park).
Saint Leonard's Horses will now unleash these fully-formed songs on live audiences wherever and whenever
they can.

Snake Eye started life as the band Red Dirt who in 1970 had a self-titled album released on the Fontana
label. After playing numerous dates in London the band were signed to new management who promptly
changed the band's name to Snake Eye.
The band then toured with many of the top acts at the time including Free, Marc Bolan, Kinks, Status Quo
and J Geils Band. In 1972 the band went into the studio to record their debut album which was described at
the time as a cross between King Crimson and Wishbone Ash. Manfred Mann praised the band "as one of the
best bands he had seen".
The world was their oyster but musical tastes were changing fast and by the end of 1973 with no major label
signing the band folded. Now released for the first time ever a true Prog rock gem from the early 70's.

From it's surreal title and occult cover art to it's grand buffet of vintage sounds and period
production moves, Sam Kogon''s Psychic Tears is a lavish, painstakingly detailed work of
modern-retro guitar pop. But what distinguishes the Brooklyn artist from the psychedelic pop
herd is not his access to Mellotrons, Vox Continentals, and Russian fuzz boxes. It is Kogon''s vast
and fluid command of chamber pop harmony and arrangement.
Psychic Tears sounds robustly old school without much at all in the way of explicit references.
Kogon''s retro is seldom studied or doctrinal; this is just the way he hears it, his natural voice as a
composer/arranger. Many standout tracks depart from the period vibe entirely, notably ""I Was
Always Talking," a timeless pop duet with Frankie Cosmos; and the nervy new wave rocker ""I
Could Kick Myself,"" which channels the barely controlled downhill energy of Elvis Costello and
the Attractions circa This Year's Model.
The record balances its embarrassment of exquisite melodies with a nasty punk urgency and lots
of sonic horseplay. Recorded at the Figure 8 studio of NYC-scene stalwart Shazad Ismaily (Lou
Reed, Tom Waits), Psychic Tears was produced by Celestial Shore''s Sam Owens and mixed by
Gabe Wax (Speedy Ortiz, Here We Go Magic, Beirut, The War On Drugs, Cas McCombs). Kogon
wisely kept his core ensemble together for this effort, leveraging their road-tested chemistry and
the inspired fancy-bits string parts provided by longtime collaborator Finnegan Shanahan.

Tele Novella is an inspired macabre-pop band out of Austin, TX. They are dreamy,

Los Angeles label Lolipop Records on the heels of a Wes Anderson tribute compilation (American
Laundromat Records), to which they contributed a contagiously glad version "Stephanie Says" by
The Velvet Underground. After a year of writing and recording, they will now finally unveil their

Mile Me Deaf is an experimental pop band from Vienna, Austria. Most songs were written
and recorded by Wolfgang Möstl in his living room, but on stage they are a full functional

Mike Hurst has over the decades produced the soundtrack of our lives. Mike was originally
a performing member of The Springfields with Tom and Dusty and they were the first
British vocal group to have a Top 20 hit single in the USA with "Silver Threads".
The group disbanded in late 1963 and Mike turned his hand to record producing and initially
worked for Andrew Loog Oldham and Mickie Most until in 1965 producing a very young
Marc Bolan "The Wizard". In 1965 after forming his own company he discovered Cat
Stevens and signed him to Dereham and then produced Cat's first five singles including
"Mathew And Son" and "I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun".
Over the next few years he also produced PP Arnold "The First Cut Is The Deepest" The
Move "Curly", Manfred Mann "Mighty Quinn" as well as Spencer Davis Group, New World,
Warm Sounds and Alan Bown Set. In the 70's he formed his own production company and
signed Showwaddywaddy to Bell and produced a string of UK hits singles including "Under
The Moon Of Love",Three Steps To Heaven" and "When". In late 70's he signed Shakin
Stevens and produced his first hit single "Hot Dog". Mike has now plundered his archives
and produced the fourth in the Angel Air series of Mike Hurst Producers Archives featuring
tracks from 1966 to 1980.

Mr Universe - 1979's Mr Universe was Gillan's second album and the first issued in the UK. This
album cemented the classic line up of former Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, guitarist Bernie
Torme, bassist John McCoy, pianist Colin Towns and drummer Mick Underwood. High energy
classic hard rock from beginning to end.
Glory Road - Issued in 1980, at the height of the NWoBHM, Glory Road took Gillan to new levels
of energy and success, cementing them as Top Of The Pops regulars. Classic British hard rock at its
best.
For Gillan Fans Only - Originally issued as a limited edition bonus disc to 1980's Glory Road, For
Gillan Fans Only features b-sides, studio outtakes and specially recorded material, interspersed
with quips and irrelevance, all showcasing the band's creativity and humour. This also features
the side project The Split Knee Loons.
Future Shock - Gillan's 1981 album Future Shock saw these Reading Festival regulars at their
lyrically most personal and diverse, taking on religion and the cold war. Aptly futuristic artwork
encompassing a blistering cover of New Orleans, and No Laughing In Heaven an early rock meets
rap chart hit.
Double Trouble - Gillan's third album in 15 months saw this 1981 double album Double Trouble
feature new guitarist Janick Gers (later of Iron Maiden), and a slightly more melodic approach.
Two chart hits and a bonus disc of live material from the Reading Festival.
Magic – Magic, issued in 1982, was Gillan's swansong before singer Ian joined Black Sabbath and
then a reformed Deep Purple. There most melodic and underrated album, it featured the
blistering Demon Driver and a cover of Stevie Wonder's Living For The City. The catalogue ended
on a high.

"In Bits" was produced and mixed by Stuart Price. "One-Hit Wonder" was produced by Pet
Shop Boys and mixed by Pete Gleadall - it is a new version of an instrumental track written
in late 1981 and remade in 2014 as the theme for Berlin's online music show, The One-Hit

Doug Kaplan wants you to be happy, to stare into the digital void, and to merrily prank you into
a puddle of fractals. As MrDougDoug, he makes music to entertain and challenge in equal
measure. The MIDI-contorting sci-fi opus SOS Forks AI REM represents his debut album of solo
material on Hausu Mountain.
While Doug continues to explore the possibilities of noise improvisation and guitar performance
in the trio Good Willsmith and other projects, SOS Forks AI REM finds him harnessing his in-thebox production experience to create an album entirely using software instruments. MrDougDoug

Mukqs has released solo experiments that take his tactics of tape-loop mangling and sample

Walkthrough, Max Allison’s first full length release on Hausu Mountain represents another
complementary branch of his work: layered synth compositions performed on hardware electronics,
inspired by the tones of classic video game music. Recorded live as a single session presented without
overdubs, Walkthrough finds Allison winding through a song cycle of day-glo square-wave leads, busy

Wesen is an electronic art-pop duo made up of long-time friends and co-conspirators Júlía
Hermannsdóttir and Loji Höskuldsson. Hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland, the two started working on

My Father always spoke of Memphis as a "Golden City". An electric, soulful, centre of
the musical universe: Blues, jazz, rock n' roll, gospel, rockabilly, country, you name it-Memphis had it all.
There the nightlife was vibrant and the music never stopped. There you could see and be

For his third Whirlwind release, trumpeter Andre Canniere shifts in an oblique direction from
previous albums 'Forward Space' and 'Coalescence' with original compositions inspired by the
words of Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke and American author Charles Bukowski.
'The Darkening Blue' is a sextet project which reaches into the heart of Stephen Mitchell's
insightful translations of Rilke, some of which are conveyed by one of UK jazz's most expressive
vocalists, Brigitte Beraha. There are instrumentally diverse interpretations, too, of Bukowski's
writings, which are illuminated throughout by Tori Freestone (tenor sax), Ivo Neame (piano,
keyboards, accordion), Michael Janisch (acoustic/electric bass) and Ted Poor (drums).
Combining Rilke's mystical intensity with a reassuring wistfulness, Beraha delivers lyrical stanzas
which rhythmically and organically enfold Canniere's narrative arrangements to kindle rich,
tumbling, connective improvisation - and that sense of engagement and craft flows throughout
an album which is as forcefully dynamic as it is emotionally moving, frequently drawing out
imaginative displays of virtuosity.
Andre Canniere is thrilled by the way his new project, with its jazz, indie rock and songwriting
influences, has come to fruition: "These are great musicians who intuitively 'bring their thing' to
my compositions, which is what I love; and I've been crazy about the work of Rilke and Bukowski

Throughout her illustrious and iconic career - now over the 50 year mark - Joyce Moreno has
thrived as an artist by undertaking new challenges, ranging from teaching herself to master the
guitar, to releasing music that defied the censorship attempts of the Brazilian military
dictatorship in the 1970s. After something of an epiphany, with Cool, Joyce has finally agreed to
take on a challenge repeatedly asked of her for many years. In her own words:

"For over 20 years I've been requested to make an album with North American jazz standards.
Nothing against it, but I always said no. I had the strange feeling that such an album would look
weird in my discography, too commercial - like I didn't have any new tricks up my sleeve, and yes,
I always have plenty. Music has never ceased to bless me with new ideas and new tunes. So why
on Earth should I embark on such a trip? The answer came to me during a soundcheck when I
started playing, just for fun, a Cole Porter song in a different way. The song was 'Love For Sale' - a
song about a demimondaine, a hooker, in short. But then this afoxe groove came up, and, all of a
sudden, Cole Porter's call girl became a hooker from Bahia. And I thought, 'man, these tunes can
be rearranged and be really fun!'"
On Cool Joyce digs deep to find the intrinsic qualities of each standard, while keeping them true
to their essence, she has crafted each track in such a way that makes them equally true to herself
and her Brazilian heritage:
"To play these tunes with my guitar, re-harmonize them, find their possible different grooves, and
make them mine. Not just turn them into 'Brazilian bossas' - which would be the obvious thing to
do - but find the personality of each one of these songs, and dress them differently. This was how
the hooker from 'Love For Sale' moved on to the streets of Salvador. 'Let's Do It', also a Cole
Porter standard, with its percussive lyrics, turned into a syncopated samba. 'Fever' was reharmonized as a typical 'Joycean' tune, with a different guitar tuning and drums played with Tutty
Moreno's bare hands. 'Banana Boat', always treated as a happy work chant, had its profound
sadness exposed (what can be more sad than people who 'work all night on a drink of rum'?).
'Invitation', of course, had to be a very sensual tango. And so on."

Jane Bunnett's latest project is an assembly of all--star Cuban musicians, an ensemble which

Torun Eriksen returns to Jazzland with her most ambitious album to date. ‘Grand White Silk’
marks an expansion of her soundworld, not by becoming more lavish, but by allowing the songs
to lead where they will, organically growing to produce sparse beauty here, luscious blossom
there, and sumptuous vitality throughout.
This also marks Eriksen's first self-produced album, and the result is something more personal,
something that captures her artistic vision more clearly and honestly than ever before. She is
assisted by long-time collaborator, Kjetil Dalland, whose contributions to her work have been a
key part of her sound from the beginning. Their efforts here are further evidence of their
exceptional synergy.
Those familiar with Torun's previous work will recognise much on offer, but will equally be taken
by surprise by the rest: the simple and the complex meld to produce inch-perfect creations.
Whether pushing a powerful groove, or weaving atmospheric piano balladry, or beating out neardemonic rubato stomps, or gospel-infused sing-alongs, the album's textures are irrefutably
coherent, all instilled with Eriksen's compositional trademarks – the mellow grooves, the
unexpected chordal shifts, the keen understanding of the dramaturgy of song - and all further
elevated by her extraordinary vocal talents.
And vocals take on whole new dimensions here, with larger-scale arrangements of backing vocals
appearing on tracks such as "Compromise" and "Downhill", while Kjetil Dalland's magical touch
provides perfect accompaniment on "Darkness" and "Take My Time". The keyboards of David
Wallumrød and the drums and percussion of Andreas Bye add to the textural melange, and offer
an expanded sonic palette without self-indulgence: no sound or texture overstays its welcome, or
simply appears unnecessarily - the songs seem to remain in charge of themselves, flowing,
breathing. The poignancy of the lyrics is carried with deft awareness and subtle nuances that
allow Torun to shine, while Dalland, Wallumrød and Bye give performances of light and shade
that artfully entwine the melodies, climbing, sliding, meandering, driving forward.

returns to the organ-tenor trio format after a long hiatus from it.
From the opening track, Cy Coleman's "Witchcraft" with its hypnotic organ vamp and
"bewitching" chord substitutions Jerry gives to the first 8 bars, you know this isn't going
to be your parents' organ-tenor gig. Bergonzi and his discmates, Renato Chicco on
organ and Andrea Michelutti on drums, take these standards down new harmonic
paths and use them as a launching pad for fertile and impressive improvisation. The
playing is always intense and distinctive, fresh and spontaneous.
There's an old saying that a great jazz musician never plays a song the same way once.
That could certainly be said of Jerry Bergonzi. He is an intellectual artist of
uncompromising integrity and a bold, original composer.

With his working trio augmented with the great clarinettist Anat Cohen, saxman Troy
Roberts and the colourful percussion of Robert Quintero, Venezuelan pianist Silvano
Monasterios has given us an album that is exuberant and visceral, as well as personal
and considered.
It might strike as a paradox, but sometimes the brilliance of certain inventions can be
measured by how obvious, how commonplace they seem. The music of Silvano
Monasterios is so easy-on-the-ear, so elegantly structured, and has such a casual, livedin feel that it takes a bit to catch on to how sophisticated his work truly is. It's only after
a while that one notices the harmonic turns, the storytelling soloing, or his rhythmic
vocabulary, especially his discreet use of traditional Venezuelan styles.
'Partly Sunny' is Monasterios' second album for Savant, and his choices suggest that he
feels no need to accommodate any conventional expectations about how Latin jazz
should sound. Whatever someone might argue to be some essence of "Latin," is here
integrated into the overall sound.

On ‘MD66’, alto saxophonist and composer Jim Snidero tackles open modal forms and uses his
unfettered imagination as a portal into free(r) territory. His band includes trumpeter Alex Sipiagin,
pianist Andy LaVerne and drummer Rudy Royston.
He takes his soloing to the next level by working an inside/outside approach that's rooted in the
structure and style of each song but radical enough to move in wildly unexpected directions. This is a
musical promised land where revelations, whether subtle or seismic in nature, are guided by
revolution.
Over the course of the past three decades Snidero has been constantly pushing himself to explore new
territories and expand his outlook. In 1989 (!) his extraordinary album ‘Blue Afternoon’ made its way
into ‘The Penguin Jazz Guide: The History of the Music in the 1001 Best Albums’. Later on he made his
mark in the sax-with-strings department, not only playing at the top of his game, but also composing
and arranging all of the music on the project. More recently he's impressed more than a few listeners

While saxophonist Eric Alexander has garnered critical acclaim from every corner, what has mattered
most has been to establish his own voice within the illustrious bop-based jazz tradition, which is

Superb trumpeter Tom Harrell, has been releasing recordings as a leader since 1989. His album
‘Something Gold, Something Blue’, on HighNote features fellow trumpeter Ambrose
Akinmusire, as well as guitarist Charles Altura, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer
Johnathan Blake.
Harrell is a prolific arranger and composer and a mysterious yet mesmerizing presence in concert
and a regular in the recording studio. His resume is impressive, with contributions to bands led by

Something is stirring in downtown Tucson. That’s no great surprise perhaps: Calexico
have been sending out missives from the desert for 20 years now, Giant Sand for even
longer than that, and the Green on Red revival is surely overdue. Let us remind ourselves
that this isn’t a big city in the American sense, but that its hinterland is indeed as big as it
gets. For an hour south, Mexico starts. And this is where things get interesting.
Born in Nogales, Arizona, raised in Nogales, Sonora, multi-instrumentalist and band-leader
Sergio Mendoza grew up listening to the Mexican regional styles jostling for headspace in
a young, music-mad mind – cumbia mainly, but mambo, rancheras and mariachi too. The
border is always a fierce arena of exchange, both commercial and cultural, and so there
was American music too. At one point ‘rock and roll, the classics’, as Mendoza himself
deadpans, seemed to win out and he stopped playing those ‘Latin styles’ for a good
decade and a half.
The return to those sounds was a strong one in 2012’s Mambo Mexicano, co-produced by
Mendoza and Joey Burns of Calexico – a band for which Mendoza has become an
increasingly integral touring and recording member. While that record had a studied air,
tentative in parts (as befits the renewal of an old love affair), ¡Vamos A Guarachar! is
another beast entirely: by turns raucous (‘Cumbia Volcadora’, featuring Mexican electronic
pioneer Camilo Lara), tender (‘Misterio’, surely Salvador Duran’s finest moment with the
band so far) and plain serious fun, as in ‘Contra La Marea’ and ‘Mapache’, it also bears a
robust electronic edge, a keen pop sensibility and all the hallmarks of Mendoza’s love of
60s rock, with the closing track, ‘Shadows of the Mind’, sure to be included if anyone
decides to update the Nuggets collection for the 21st century. This is roundabout way of
saying that it appears to have everything, but never too much of anything. Focused, fierce
and beautifully executed by a superbly drilled set of musicians, it is a record that fully
matches the band’s explosive live performances.
You could, of course, take the trip to Tucson yourself, to the home of this essential set of
field recordings. The scene hangs out together, so … if the stars align and their frantic tour
schedules permit, you might see any number of folks from Calexico, Giant Sand or up-andcoming cumbia rockers Xixa deep in conversation somewhere in town with a quiet young
man in black. That’s Sergio. Right now, in this endless game of Tucson tag, Orkesta
Mendoza are IT.

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as perhaps the most popular star of the
Buena Vista Social Club ™ phenomenon. World Circuit is proud to announce the release
of his final album 'Mi Sueño' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life
– an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles – the bolero.
'Mi Sueño' is an intimate arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist
with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana in
2004, the year before he died, with a wonderful small group that included Manuel
Galbán on guitar and Cachaíto López on bass, the album is a very personal take on the
bolero style – deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern. Full of passion
and tenderness but still with an inimitable and irrepressible swing, Ibrahim sculpts
familiar songs into fresh and atmospheric creations that are uniquely his own.

Warehouse Studios in Vancouver.
'Blue Highways' pays tribute to some of the singer/guitarist's longtime blues idols including
Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Freddie King, Junior Wells & Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Robert
Johnson and William Bell to name a few.
In the Spring of 2015 Colin wrapped up his Hearts on Fire tour. Colin was loving playing with the
band and really happy with the sound they had created on stage. What better time to make a
record? Especially the record Colin had been itching to make for years - a collection of some of his
favorite blues tracks. In less than a week Colin and his touring band went into The Warehouse
Studios in Vancouver and in just 2 days, Blue Highways was born.
The lead single, "Going Down" inspired by the great Freddie King features Geoff Hicks (Drums),
Steve Pelletier (Bass), Jesse O'Brien (Piano), Craig Northey (Rhythm Guitar), and of course Colin
James (Vocal/Guitar).

With his new album, "Something Smooth", the Anglo-American singer, guitar player and
songwriter proves that it's about time to discover a new Pete Alderton: the storyteller.
In contrast to other great musical storytellers such as Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen who chose
Folk or Chanson as a vehicle for their lyrics, Pete Alderton stays deeply rooted in the Blues. Seven
minute songs full of details and references are not for him, he rather picks out moments,
episodes, feelings and moods. This way he builds up a story song by song over the length of an
album. His story.
As one can guess from the album title there is a smooth and relaxed vibe on "Something
Smooth". Like in the romantic title track, in "Man On The Run" or in "Never", a jazzy piano ballad.
These original compositions are accompanied by touching versions of Bob Marley's "Redemption
Song" and "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" by Tom Waits. But don't be fooled,
"Something Smooth" is not Pete Aldertons "bedroom album". the man is way too versatile and
edgy for that. Right at the beginning of the album he shows with "Revelation Blues" by blues
legend Robert Johnson that his heart still belongs to the rough Delta-Blues. "So Cool" is a perfect
Chicago style blues song just like "Down To The River" captures that iconic highway feeling.

album betray Dave's roots as the son of a Presbyterian minister -- while also giving the Devil his

roots-rock sensibilities to the mix. Legendary Nashville string player Fats Kaplin (Mark Knopfler,

Protest, resentment, despair. Well, it's the blues after all. But frequently the message is expressed
with wit and humour, so that the object of the various barbs would have no idea who or what was
being criticised.
Occasionally, as with both the Mississippi Sheiks and the Memphis Jug Band - who complained about
police corruption - the sentiments were unambiguous. And, as it happens, never so relevant as today.
But these tracks were cut primarily as entertainment - the musicianship and wordplay is generally
stunning. Listen for that reason. The sociology's a bonus.

This remarkable collaboration between author George Monbiot and musician Ewan McLennan
seeks to address the curse of our age: a crowded planet stricken by loneliness. Using music and
the written word, it seeks to make connections in a splintered world.
The project began with an article George Monbiot wrote in the Guardian, about the age of
loneliness. The article went viral, and several publishers asked him to write books about it. But
George had a different idea.
He approached Ewan McLennan -- a musician whose work he greatly admired -- and proposed a
collaboration. Together they would write an album, a mixture of ballads and anthems, whose aim
was to try to break the spell that appears to have been cast upon us; the spell of separation.
The resulting album, entitled Breaking the Spell of Loneliness, features narrative songs and music,
recorded by Ewan, that open up the various strands of this issue. These are accompanied by a
short essay on the topic and extensive song notes written by George.
Breaking The Spell of Loneliness is a unique and original body of work, launched in the belief that
that nothing has greater potential to unite than the combination of word and music.

Following last year's release of their critically acclaimed debut album, From Bedlam to Lenane,
the duo Ilaria Graziano & Francesco Forni return with a new album Come2Me, once again
merging a multitude of influences and creating a unique blend of alternative folk and bluestinged acoustic songs.
From To Bedlam Lenane was praised by Italian critics underlining Ilaria and Francesco's
extraordinary musicality. For "la Repubblica" the album was 'one of the finest Italian albums in
recent years ", and in the UK Songlines magazine described it as, 'not only surprising but
scintillating and stylish'. Neither of the musicians are newcomers to the music scene however.
Ilaria has worked with the Japanese composer Yoko Anno on the soundtracks of the cult anime
films "Ghost in the Shell" and "Cowboy Bebop"; she also sang a duet with Marianne Faithful for
the soundtrack of another film "The Girl from Nagasaki". Francesco Forni meanwhile has been
playing and composing for over ten years and is a theatre and film music composer. He penned
the music for the film "Santos" by Roberto Saviano (of Gomorrah fame), and participated in the
soundtrack of Oscar-winner Paolo Sorrentino's film, "The Consequences of Love".
With the album Come2Me the duo continue their fruitful collaboration. The album is a fascinating
journey that traverses the lands of Mexico and Texas via Route 66, mixing blues and folk with
Argentinian tango and Neapolitan songs. All accompanied by the fluidity of two guitars which
recalls the duo Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan or the American singer songwriter Alela Diane.
The songs forming the album focus on the sounds of the acoustic guitars, accompanied by ukulele
and percussion; Ilaria and Francesco take turns singing, varying between English, Latin languages
and creating captivating songs full of rhythms. Come 2 Me is a great album sparkling with talent
and proving if necessary that simplicity can pay.

book by McKenna and Steven Dexter.
'Maddie' was developed during the prestigious Stephen Sondheim Masterclass at Oxford
University in 1990. After numerous workshops and a further eleven drafts of the script; producer
Kenny Wax premiered 'Maddie' at the Salisbury Playhouse on September 5th 1996. After
achieving critical acclaim in Salisbury, the production transferred to London's Lyric Theatre the
following year starring Graham Bickley, Summer Rognlie, Kevin Colson and Lynda Baron.

Jaap van Zweden has risen rapidly in little more than a decade to become one of today’s most
sought-after conductors. He has been Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since
2008, and Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012. In January 2016
van Zweden was announced as the next Music Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra,
a position he takes up at the beginning of the 2018/19 season. The Amsterdam-born van Zweden
was appointed at 19 as the youngest concertmaster ever of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
and began his conducting career 20 years later in 1995. He remains Honorary Chief Conductor of
the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In November 2011, van Zweden was named

Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra return after a long period to the world of
the cantata with a disc which sees them record Italian cantatas by Handel for the first time,
including the world premiere recording of Cantata HWV 171a.
Sometime in late 1705 or 1706 Georg Friedrich Handel, like many German composers before him,
travelled to Italy, then the fountainhead of European music. During the next three years he paid
extended visits to Rome and also spent time in Florence, Venice and Naples. In 1709-10, he
returned once again to Florence and Venice. Rather than studying with some Italian master, as
others had done, he quickly established himself as a virtuoso performer and composer, enjoying
the support of leading patrons and composing numerous cantatas.
Lost music from Handel’s years in Italy rarely comes to light, but in 2015 a previously unknown
and largely different version of the cantata “Tu fedel? tu costante?”, HWV 171, was discovered by
chance, uniquely preserved in a manuscript belonging to Ton Koopman. A complaint of an injured
love, both Handel settings of this text are for soprano, but in the new cantata, HWV 171a, the
accompanying ensemble includes an oboe and after the first aria, it sharply diverges from the
familiar version. HWV 171a was probably composed in Venice or Florence in late 1706.
Organist, harpsichordist and conductor Ton Koopman, one of the world’s leading exponents of
Baroque music, founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra in 1979. They have appeared with
him on countless recordings, among them his two most ambitious projects: the complete Bach
cantatas, a massive undertaking for which he was awarded the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis “Echo
Klassik”, a BBC Music Magazine Award and the Hector Berlioz Prize, and the Opera Omnia of
Bach’s predecessor, Dieterich Buxtehude, an edition of 30 CDs recorded between 2005-2014. In
2003 he founded his own label Antoine Marchand, a sub-label of Challenge Classics.

Ars Antiqua Austria, the group directed and led by violinist Gunar Letzbor, takes on the ‘Four
Seasons’ challenge but, as usual with their performances, their account is unusual: an individual
touch is present throughout all four of Vivaldi’s Concertos.
AAA’s account is not a re-invention, it’s a re-discovery: all their musical choices, although original
and not heard before, are always the fruit of freshness, innocence and discipline, they are never
arbitrary. Gunar Letzbor says: “It is almost impossible nowadays to perform Vivaldi’s music
without any preconceptions, even if one engages with it only rarely. Vivaldi’s sound is ubiquitous.
Or is that perhaps the sound of only a few works from his rich oeuvre? When I played through “La
Cetra” for the first time on the violin, I found some typical Vivaldi-isms which I really cannot
stand. At the same time, however, I was surprised to find a remarkable body of new features
waiting to be discovered.
“One just must not succumb to the temptation of immediately putting the familiar Vivaldi stamp
onto everything. I have, in the meantime, formed an even greater friendship with Vivaldi. There is
so much to discover amongst his works, away from mainstream sounds. This recording and its
preparation: practising in peace and quiet; trying out sounds; receiving and discarding ideas;
taking in the texts; rediscovering melodies and, if possible, never listening to any Vivaldi
recordings.”
Ars Antiqua Austria was founded in Linz in 1995 with the aim of introducing audiences to the
roots of Austrian baroque music played on period instruments. The music performed at the
imperial court in Vienna at this time shows the strong influence of Italian and later of French
forms, while Spanish court ceremonials also shape the character of the works. The core of Ars
Antiqua Austria comprises eight musicians directed by Gunar Letzbor, but the ensemble is readily
augmented to accommodate wider repertoire. Their recent recordings on Challenge Classics
include discs devoted to music by Karl Kohaut, Fux, Graupner, Werner and Biber.
