New outreach programs have been initiated at schools and public libraries in Delaware on a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities developed for pre-school and home-schooled children and their parents. Weekend science exploration sessions and evening astronomy programs are focused on engaging families in learning about science and providing suggestions for further activities to complete at home. All Destination Exploration programs, ten different sessions of the Delaware Aerospace Academy and evening astronomy programs focused on getting students, children and their families involved with STEM education. Professional development workshops combined with distribution of teacher resources reached over 444 educators. Participation has increased from 7,509 in 2009 to 13,077 in 2010. (L to R) John Tarburton, Delaware Director of the U.S. Rural Development of Agriculture and Senator Tom Carper join DASEF Board members Bryan Ford, Stephanie Wright, Charlie Michels, and Gary Bell at the Outpost to celebrate the awarding of a USDA grant for photovoltaic cells. Funded by a designated NASA grant, a scale model of the solar system was completed on the campus and the educational sculpture, “Wisdom begins with Wonder”, designed by Charles Parks is under construction. The Environmental Outpost building received a silver certification for its green construction by the United States Green Building Council in July. This building was originally constructed as the “Solar House” by engineering students at the University of Delaware, acquired by DASEF and reconfigured for use as a learning center. Its solar installation is producing electricity and providing revenue toward offsetting power costs. The exterior of the ITEC building has been completed. As funding becomes available, the next construction package for this facility will include build-out of the interior spaces used for instructional programs to permit housing summer and weekend programs at the Smyrna location. The Board is pleased with the progress made in 2010 with increased participation in programs and continued construction. We look forward to continued program development and construction progress in 2011. Sincerely, Stephanie M.G. Wright, Ed. D. President & CEO Gary P. Bell Chairman, Board of Directors 1 DASEF 2010 Annual Report ABOUT DASEF Founded in 1989, the Delaware AeroSpace Education Foundation (DASEF), an independent non-profit educational organization having 501(c)(3) status, functions to raise the visibility and value of K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to meet intellectual and workplace needs of the future. DASEF implements successful programs using proven instructional strategies to motivate, engage, educate and inspire people from diverse backgrounds and communities in Delaware. The DASEF vision is driven by the belief that “Wisdom Begins with Wonder.” Capitalizing on natural curiosity through activities that include a problem solving component enriches the learning process for participants. DASEF has established itself as an innovative and progressive organization with the vision and resources required to link contemporary aeronautic, space, and engineering themes with traditional school subjects to increase interest in science and technology. Wisdom Begins with Wonder 2 Wisdom Begins with Wonder Educating and Inspiring 2010 COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL STATEMENT MISSION: To inspire and educate the people of the Delaware Valley in learning about the Earth’s environment, Earth and space science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the use of academies, presentations, symposiums, professional development, events, and activities and the resources of DASEF’s Environmental Outpost. CORE VALUES: • Integrity and compassion • Responsible decision making • Environmental stewardship • Innovation, exploration, and discovery VISION: To create an exceptional learning environment that inspires children and their families with a sense of appreciation for the Earth and its place in the universe. Following are comprehensive financial statements excerpted from DASEF’s Fiscal Year 2010 (January 1, 2010—December 31, 2010) audit performed by the accounting firm of BBD, LLP, Certified Public Accountants, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Complete audited statements are available from DASEF upon request. Phase II: Innovation Technology Exploration Center (ITEC) Update Exterior work continued throughout 2010. Experience gained through completion of the outpost has provided incentive for continuing green construction practice in the ITEC (Innovation Technology Exploration Center) facility under construction. A roofmounted photo-voltaic solar package is being installed 4 and is expected to provide temporary electrical service to the building as construction continues. It is designed to provide a large portion of electricity required for the building’s eventual operational needs. Wisdom Begins with Wonder SUMMARY OF PROGRESS Finish and detail work are all that remain to complete the exterior work of ITEC. Installation of 144 solar units began. Further extending the green construction initiative, planning for ITEC includes the construction of the geothermal system for heating and cooling purposes. The proposed system should provide all of the heating needs of the facility and approximately 75 percent of its cooling requirements. Potential funding sources for this system are being explored. 5 DASEF 2010 Annual Report LAYING THE GROUNDWORK Work on DASEF’s Park’s Studio Outdoor Educational Exhibit Continues Clay models of the five life-sized sculptures of children from diverse backgrounds have been completed by Brad Vanneman, who is representing the Charles Parks Studio.
