We will work on building, managing and maintaining a positive image between Dallas 71 and the community that will develop favorable rapport and good will. We will be gathering information about all of our activities that are „newsworthy‟ and see that the community is aware of our good deeds. We want to become very well known and attract new members to help us in meeting our goal—to be the pride of our community! Help this Lodge by calling with your suggestions, by telling us your ideas or even offering to help just spread our news that “Elks Care, Elks Share” throughout the neighborhood. The “Pride of our Community”. ESTEEMED LEADING KNIGHT Robert Wilburn We hear each day about the instability and uncertainty in many places in the world. Our own country has many problems that make our own future uncertain. With all the things occurring, we as Elks must continue to serve our nation and community to the best of our abilities. Our organization has a tradition of facing the challenges of difficult times. In the 2011-2012 year, we should be steadfast in our tradition of supporting our active military personnel and veterans, protecting our flag, and supporting the charities of Elkdom. No effort or contribution is too small; just always do the best you can. ESTEEMED LOYAL KNIGHT John Belew The installation of officers for the year was a great event. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make it successful. The food and the dance were enjoyed by everyone. I encourage all members and especially our new members to attend all of our activities. Our Lodge is a great place for meeting our fellow members for fellowship and the joy of sharing in our charitable functions. Thanks to our PERs for their help in training of new officers in learning the rituals. Hope everyone had a great Easter. ESTEEMED LECTURING KNIGHT Marion A McDaniel Just a few words to say “WOW” and to say thanks to the members for their confidence in electing me to be the Esteemed Lecturing Knight. This is all new to me but with the help and support of the officers and members I will try to serve my station in the high standards set by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. I am looking forward to the rest of the year and what it will bring, and hoping to see all of you at the monthly meetings, and other events. Thanks again for your confidence in me. Thomas started his journey in Santa Monica, CA and plans to end it in our Nation’s Capital, Washington DC. We were honored with his visit to our Lodge on Thursday, April 21st. Pictured above is Thomas Trujillo (a Navy Reservist and fellow Elk) and Bob Finch, PSP . HOW WE SPENT YOUR MONEY John Dillon Many members and ladies have donated time and money to the Lodge in an effort to make it a place of which we can be proud. One group has labored long and hard to wash the walls in the Lounge, Dining Room and hallways to spruce up their appearance. Some of the monetary donations covered the cost of upgrading from 30 amp to 50 amp service to the RV parking area to accommodate larger motor homes, and that investment is returning money to the Lodge 15875 through increased rental fees. (continued ) Russell Scott, PER, and his lovely wife Robin looking festive and party-fied at a recent function at the Lodge. (Continued from previous column) The PERs paid to replace the cracked window on the old game room, and John Belew donated funds to replace two windows in the Dining Room. $4,000 of donated funds covered the repairs to the swimming pool required by the City. Over $2,000 was spent to repair the fire sprinkler system, and for re-inspection required by the City. It‟s amazing how much can be accomplished when we work together for the good of our Lodge. I don‟t know about you, but this Lodge is my second home, and it‟s members are like my family. I hope many of you feel the same way. Walt and Shirley Thomas adding to the glamour of the occasion. In my April 2011 Elks Press article, I gave 430 as the possible membership at the end of the March 31, 2011 year end, which would give us an increase of plus one for the year. Currently, that is the total, and excluding any bad luck on several transfer requests made just prior to March 31, 2011, we should remain at 430. Regardless of the outcome, responsible Elks did their best this past year to maintain and increase our membership. Each of you, who brought in new members, should feel proud of your efforts to help this great organization. I personally thank you. We currently have several applications in process for our first 2011-2012 initiation at the May 24th meeting. In 2011-2012, we need to continue our success in maintaining the membership of Dallas Lodge #71. The Lodge has been here for 123 years, so let‟s work hard to ensure it‟s presence in the hands of good responsible Elks for many more years. The Motto of our Order The faults of our Members We write upon the sand Their virtues upon the tablet Henry Williams, PER and Baerbel are all smiles and ready to hit the dance floor at the latest shindig. HELP WANTED!!! The Jolly Boys are a group of “jolly” guys that, twice a week, work at your Lodge spring, summer, fall and winter keeping the lawn and doing minor maintenance work to the building and campus. The current crew needs your help. The pay is excellent (coffee and doughnuts after work each morning), and camaraderie that can‟t be beat. We meet every Wednesday morning at 8:00, and every Saturday at 7:00. We welcome you at both or just one session per week. Call either Nick Jantzen at 214-348-3200 or Al Tyler at 214-341-0806, or just show up either Wednesday or Saturday morning. No special skill is necessary, but all special abilities can be put to good use. All agree that this is going to be a great year for all members of Dallas 71. The Lodge will grow and prosper and we will have fun at the same time. We pledge to offer a wide variety of activities, yummy food, and a wonderful can‟t-be-beat-anywhere bar staff. Please plan on attending, and come prepared for fellowship with old friends, and to make new friends. We hope that you‟ll be as excited as we are, and that you‟ll bring all your family and friends. IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ! Bill Shipp, Secretary Our Order and Lodge have a large body of law that governs membership and operations of our Lodge. It is very difficult for a member to be familiar with all of these rules and regulations, but there are two that need emphasis at this time: (1) Do not loan your membership card to anyone at any time. There are no exceptions to this rule. (2) Elks who have been dropped from the rolls are not eligible to come to the Lodge except to apply for reinstatement. If you plan to bring guests, it is your responsibility to determine if they are eligible. Adherence to these rules will help us avoid unnecessary situations that are embarrassing to all involved. Many of you will remember him from past years, when Charlie and his orchestra with the big band sound, played at places around town including Guys and Dolls, Wintergarden, plus the Dallas and Fort Worth Elks Lodges. Charlie was also the band instructor for many years at McLean Middle School in Fort Worth, where he became acquainted with my deceased husband, PER Jack Ross of Fort Worth #124. In fact, some of you will remember that Charlie played lovely medleys on his clarinet at Jack's funeral, which was five and a half years ago. I grew up in “Wide Awake Wylie” Texas. After high school I went to college in Rome, Italy. The field trips were fantastic! Shortly after that I joined the U.S. Navy and attached to the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower where I worked on the flight deck until landing a job in the Public Affairs Department. My next gig was for Princess Cruises where I worked as an Assistant Cruise Director. It was one of the most fun experiences of my life and they paid me to do it! I found an opportunity to go back to college and finish what I started. My immediate goal is to obtain an Associate‟s Degree in order to become a Teacher‟s Assistant. I look forward to serving as the Dallas Elk‟s Lodge #71 Sweetheart. The theme this year is “Pennies from Heaven”. The pool is closed, but some kids managed to gain access on Friday evening, April 8th, and were discovered by members at Game Night. They either climbed the fence or had access to a members card. Anyone caught using the pool will be required to produce identification, and will be reported to the police for trespassing. DO NOT LEND YOUR CARD TO ANYONE! Letting others use your card could result in loss of your privileges. PROSTHETIC GRANT PROGRAM Ken Ransom We will shortly receive our annual allocation grant from the Texas Elks Children‟s Services (TECSI) and encourage our members to advise me of anyone under 18 who needs financial assistance in securing durable items in support of or relief of their circumstances. Many elements must come together to bowl a „300‟ game, and John definitely was at the right place at the right time with the right stuff!. “I wasn‟t ever really nervous” said John after the applause died down. She has had only 4 different addresses in her whole life. She and Don met at Parents Without Partners in Livonia, Michigan, and will be married 36 years this month. They have 4 boys, 4 daughters-in-law, 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 1 step grandson, 1 step great granddaughter and 1 step great grandson. After working 20 years for Trinity Universal Insurance Co., she retired on March 31, 2006, and joined the 71 Steppers 4 days later. She has enjoyed line dancing ever since. Since Don still works full time, their travel time is limited. They enjoy bus trips, and have been to 45 states and also Scotland, Ireland, Amsterdam, and Belgium. While in Belgium, they were able to visit a little village where Rose‟s dad was born in 1906. It was quite a thrill. Many years ago, she played the accordion, and with her brother on drums, and a cousin on the sax, they played for many Belgian dances. She is serving her 4th time as Historian for the Dallas Elks Ladies. Her hobbies are quilting and machine embroidery.
