HOPES & DREAMS
ANNUAL REPORT
2007
From the CEO
2007 was another exceptional year. Knowing that the men and women we support and their caregivers are growing older our board of
Directors spent a full day in a strategic planning session looking at the long-term needs of the individuals we support. Expanding residential and personal support services and ensuring Hi-Hope has the capacity to meet the ever increasing funding challenges while providing needed supports were long-term goals that were identified.
The following are a few of the highlights of the year that I am proud to report.
A client council was established to improve client representation on rights issues and to serve as a forum for improving services;
A working art studio opened for all clients to expand and develop their creativity;
Hi-Hope clients participated in regular events at the Buford Senior Center making friends in the community;
Parkside, a completely accessible home, opened in Snellville;
Three teams of Hi-Hope clients volunteered for Gwinnett Great Days of Service projects giving back to the community while volunteer teams from
Primerica Financial Services spruced up the Hi-Hope Service Center grounds and Parkside Group Home;
•
Cooking, yoga and crocheting classes were added as new activities at the center;
•
Hi-Hope clients began regular delivery of Meals On Wheels in Gwinnett County;
•
David Bernhardt was elected President of the Board of Directors with the retirement of Donnis Bowman after 7 years at the helm;
•
The second year of the Goizueta grant provided continued speech therapy, occupational therapy, assistive technology and social
work services which contributed to
improved independence for the individuals we supported;
•
Construction began and was nearly completed on the 3rd of our planned 4 residential home sites;
•
An outside consulting firm conducted an independent assessment of the structure of our organization presenting recommendations
and an action plan for the next fiscal year;
•
Snellville Christian Church donated a piece of land for construction of a completely handicapped accessible group home;
•
A grant partnership with Spectrum Autism group and the CarMax Foundation provided funds for a youth and adolescent Asperger’s
social skills development program;
•
The monthly Saturday respite services program was continued for children and adults with developmental disabilities;
•
Support of our residential program was expanded through a partnership with Perimeter Church members;
•
An updated fire alarm system was installed in the workshop and Lowry buildings through a grant from the Community Development
Block Grant Program approved by the
County Commissioners;
•
The funds needed to purchase Automatic external defibrillators for each building and each group home were donated by attendees
at our Gala Ball and provided through a
grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia.
•
•
•
•
•
As a result of continued support from our community Hi-Hope has continued to grow and implement services that meet the long-term
needs of this group of citizens in Gwinnett. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many men and women with developmental disabilities and their families.
Alice Cunningham, Executive Director
H
“
i-Hope Service Center’s mission is
to provide comprehensive quality services to adults with
developmental disabilities in a caring environment that builds self-esteem and a
sense of accomplishment through a variety of individual choices.”
OUR MISSION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
David Bernhardt and his family
have a long history with Hi-Hope. Prior to
joining the Board of Directors in 2001, Mr. Bernhardt served twice as Hi-Hope’s Interim Executive Director. Other family members including
his wife Carol and her late parents, Reba and
Doug Edwards, are past board members. Reba
Edwards, in fact, was President from 1987 to
1994. And the Bernhardt’s daughter, Katy, for the
past five summers has worked at Hi-Hope and is
studying non-profit management in college. Mr.
Bernhardt says that when he married Carol, he
had no idea Hi-Hope would be such an integral
part of his family’s future. “I’m really glad it’s
worked out for me now, because I love it. It’s life
changing. You just don’t understand until you’re
there every day.”

Vice-President
David Bernhardt
Our client representative has made
great contributions for herself and her fellow co-workers at Hi-Hope. Lisa, also a HiHope Client Council member, became a
member of the Board of Directors in June
2006. In preparation, Lisa attended a
board meeting in May as an observer,
“Lisa paid rapt attention,” says Janis
Hunter, chairman of the Client’s Rights
Committee. “I tried to educate her so she
could get her bearings.” Lisa also serves
on the committee that oversees service
quality. She is committed to improving
services offered at Hi-Hope.

On behalf of Hi-Hope’s clients, families, staff, and board— thank you who made such a difference
in so many lives. Every important milestone during the year was a direct result of your generosity.
While government funding helps pay for basic services for adults with developmental disabilities,
it is private dollars that yield innovation.
THANK YOU
