t is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to
y-Ninth Annual Santa Barbara Athletic Round
Table Hall of Fame Banquet. We are here to celebrate
athletics, academics, and ethics through a unique Santa
Barbara institution.
This banquet and the attendant inductions into the
Hall of Fame is the jewel in the crown of Santa Barbara
that is the Athletic Round Table. It culminates nine months
of activities, both large and small, that the Round Table
sponsors and promotes.
The chief of these activities is the weekly press
Barry Taugher
luncheons, held every Monday during the school year.
SBART President
The luncheons have become a venue for building the Santa
Barbara athletic community. At the luncheons coaches
meet and recognize not only their own athletes but athletes in other schools, with whom they
have competed last week or will do so next week. They acknowledge character, hard work,
and achievement, recognizing each student athlete individually. We award athletes weekly,
and we award scholar athletes monthly. We celebrate achievements in ethics through the Phil
Womble Ethics award monthly.
Throughout the year we host events for our members who make this possible. Those
events include the Fall Classic (John Robinson) and the Prelude to March Madness
(Don Ford, Jerry Pimm, and Mark Patton). In February we produce a luncheon celebrating
the local National Girls and Women in Sports Day, where achievements in women's athletics
are present by outstanding women role models. And tonight we will induct six athletes to the
Hall of Fame. We will present seven special awards; six scholarship awards; coaches of the
year; the athletes of the week; scholar athletes of the year, and the Womble Ethics awards for
the year.
We often hear from coaches and community members that this organization is unique
for a town the size of Santa Barbara. The Round Table is indeed unique. We accomplish all
of this with no paid staff and no place of business. We have an incredible board and committed
members. Our Hall of Fame committee, led by Darcie McKnight, has years of experience
with this amazing production. The Round Table is unique because it is derivative of the
uniqueness of the Santa Barbara community, of which we are all a part.
In closing, it is fitting to acknowledge and thank our sponsors. Local athletes benefit
from the support of the Santa Barbara News Press, through coverage of the press luncheons
and sponsorship of the Athletes of the Week. Thank you, to the sports writers, editors, and
publisher of the News Press.
The following have contributed directly to this event: Title Sponsor - Montecito Bank
& Trust; Table Sponsors - First American Title, Giffm & Crane-General Contractors, Coldwell
Banker-Santa BarbaraiMontecito, Land America Lawyers Title, Micheel-Gamberdella Group
of Smith Barney; and Student Athlete Sponsors - Delmonte Management, First Capital
Mortgage, Tim & Debbie Foley, Eugene & Darcie McKnight, Metrocities Mortgage, Mid
State Bank, Santa Barbara Independent, Stewart Title, and Rick & Carol Wilson.
Thank you for attending this year's banquet. Each inductee and awardee deserves the
recognition and credit.

./
ver thirty-eight years ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped
coffe~gl Caesar's Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa
Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry
and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic
Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports
and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area.
The Round Table got off to a fast start. Its fIrst organizational meeting was
held at Santa Barbara's East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people
attended this meeting and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members.
The Round Table's fIrst annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College
on June 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and
local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million.
Harry's Plaza Cafe was the site of the Round Table's first press luncheon
held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill
Bertka, were similar to a "Monday Morning Quarterback Club." All area schools
were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For 33 years, the
Round Table luncheons have been held at Harry's every Monday, attended by
standing room only crowds.
Since its fIrst meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table
has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support
their athletic programs. Through membership dues, contributions, special events
and foundation donations, the Round Table has raised more than $2,000,000.
Funds are distributed according to need. The Round Table is proud to help
student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have
been able to attend. With continued community support, we at the Round Table
are confident that Santa Barbara's sports opportunities will continue to grow with
each new season.

GREGG WILSON
UC Santa Barbara
In 1984, Wilson took control of the Gaucho women's program and immediately led
them to a Big West Championship. The women have won nine Big West Championships
and have come in second eight times. As conference champs, the Gaucho women have sent
19 swimmers to the NCAA Championships. The 1989 women's team finished 17th at the
NCAA Championship meet, scoring 50 points and producing five All-Americans. The
seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle relay was the highest ever at the NCAA
Championship by any UCSB team in school history. In 1990, four Gauchos earned AllAmerican Honorable Mention honors, making Kim Bryson UCSB's first ever four-time
All-American.
In his 29 seasons at the helm of UC Santa Barbara swimming, Gregg Wilson has
posted a dual meet record of 281-198-1. Even more impressive, his squads have collected
34 Big West Conference Championships, 25 by his men's teams and nine by his women's
teams. Wilson has been named Men's Coach of the Year 12 times and Women's Coach of
the Year eight times.
Wilson's teams have also excelled at the national level. His men's teams have been
ranked as high as 16th nationally and several of his swimmers over the years have advanced
to the NCAA Championships, 31 of whom have attained All-American status. Among the
All-Americans he has coached are Olympic Gold Medalists Richard Schroeder and Jason
Lezak (current world record holder), world record holder Bruce Stahl and All-American
Carl Larsen.
A native of Walnut Creek and graduate of Las Lomas High School, Wilson attended
Diablo Valley Junior College where he competed in water polo and swimming earning
All-American honors. He continued both sports at UC Berkeley.

DWAYNE HAUSCHILD
Dos Pueblos High School
Dwayne Hauschild has been a Santa Barbara resident for more than 30 years now.
His volleyball experience began in his sophomore year under the tutelage of Jon Lee at
San Marcos High School. During his senior year he was selected to the All-Channel
League Team, as well as All-ClF, and was invited to participate in the Junior Elite Camp,
now known as the Junior National team. He played at SBCC during their trip to the state
finals, and then transferred to Long Beach State where he was a red-shirt member of the
1991 National Championship Team. He has earned his AAA rating on the beach numerous
times and is still playing when time permits down at East or Goleta Beach.
Dwayne coached his first team's right after graduating San Marcos in 1988 where he
inherited the girls and then boys' freshman teams and began working for Jon Lee and the
Royals. While in college Dwayne would consistently make appearances and assist in the
developing players and teams at any opportunity. With Ed Holdren's help at the Page
Center, Dwayne started up the Santa Barbara Boys Volleyball Club in the early 1990's and
was acting coach and director for three years.
San Marcos again opened the opportunity to coach and Dwayne began to assist Jon's
boys and girls teams in the late 1990's until 2002 when the Royals Boys went to the ClF
Finals. It was that following summer that Coach O'Leary called with the opportunity to
coach at Dos Pueblos with the girls' volleyball team. After much prodding from his Charger
alumni wife, he accepted and took to the task of building Dos Pueblos into a fun, successful
program. From 0-8 to 8-0 in 4 years and now carrying the much coveted Channel League
Title for 2005, Dwayne was awarded the Channel League Coach of the Year as well as
ClF Division 2 Coach of the year honors this season. He is thankful to all that have helped
him learn and grow as a player and coach and hopes to continue the tradition of learning
and winning for many years to come.

./ he Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the Year Award
~ -..-
was initiated in September 1986 after the Round Table's Board of Directors
recognized the need to honor those students who are not only successful athletes, but who
also maintain strong academic and extracurricular credentials.
Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity athletics at the high
school level and in designated athletic programs at the college level. Academic qualifications include outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in conjunction
with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, scientific societies, extracurricular
activities and outstanding aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been selected
by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and coaches at the various high schools
and colleges in the Santa Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table.
The Athletic Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes beyond recognizing individual students who have outstanding academic and athletic records. It also
is a reminder to the community that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics
and still maintain outstanding academic achievement. We are proud to present the 2005-2006
