accommodates the needs of recent and future development
of the nation especially in the field of agriculture and
environment.

(FMNS) (直訳は数学・自然科学部)
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) was
founded on September 7th, 1955 and inaugurated by the
former Vice President of Republic of Indonesia, Dr. M. Hatta
and former Minister of Education and Culture, Prof.
Soewandi.
生物、薬学、化学、物理学、数学科からなる
Due to the regional conflict, the faculty was closed in 1958
and reopened in 1962 initiated by Biology Department.
Department of Pharmacy and Department of Chemistry were
respectively established in 1964 and 1965 and two more
departments, Physics and Mathematics, were opened in 1996.

Teaching Staff
FMNS has 208 teaching staff members, with the qualification of
PhD (41), Master (167) and Professors (18). To improve the
quality of teaching staff, the faculty encourages and facilitates
them to take PhD in Indonesia as well as abroad. Currently, 52
of them are accomplishing their PhD and M.Sc studies.
Among the teaching staff earning the award are Prof.Dr Dayar
Arbain who received King Bouduin Award (1993), Convocation
Award (1993), and Who’s Who in The World 1999; and Prof.Dr.
Edison Munaf in “Who and Who in the World”, 7th edition
(1983), 11th Edition (1997) Marquish Publisher USA, and
National Outstanding Lecturer No. III of Indonesia University
Lecturer competition.
Research Activities さまざまなファンドを取って研究を行っている
Each year, staff members in the FMNS successfully obtain
grants from various sources. The grants come from
different sources such as Minister of National Education,
Minister of Research and Technology, Andalas University,
Special Research Grant from Vice-President RI, UNESCO,
WWF, World Bank, Kehati, ODA, IFS, JICA, etc.

Researches in FMNS include pure and applied researches
and researches for development. Most of the researches are
carried out in the area of biological resources, chemistry
and bioactivity of medicinal plants, environmental analysis,
chemistry of natural product, statistic and electronic
instrument.

FMNS has established cooperation in
education and research with several national
and international institutions, i.e. The
University of Western Australia, The
University of Melbourne, Gifu University,
Shimane University, Universite de Rennes I,
Kyoto University, Universiti Putra Malaysia
and Kagoshima University.
This cooperation has granted scholarships to
a number of FMNS staff members to pursue
some degrees at some universities abroad.

Herbarium The Herbarium of Andalas University /
ANDA, managed by the Dept of Biology, has an extensive
collection of plants from all over Sumatra Island especially
West Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi Provinces. The number of
specimens amounts to 65.000. This unit supports academic
and research activities for students and staffs at FMNS as
well as for other institutions.
Faculty of Agriculture was established in 1954.
Currently, it has five departments and eight

1. Background
背景:インドネシアは生物多様性に富む国だが、
それを保全するための人材が不足している
Indonesia is one of the larger biodiversity in the world.
Management of biodiversity is very necessary in order to
protect them from endanger. The local government should
improve their income but in other side their man resources
is limited. Based on the above reason, the Indonesian
government will be provided the special scholarship for
local government officer or candidate local government
officer.
Applied Biology is one program of the Indonesia
Government in form of Double Degree. This program is
focused in all aspect of applied biology that need by local
government to improve their man resources. Graduated
from this program will applied their knowledge in their
local government where he/her work.
2. Courses and Credits

The international program consists of two stages. In
the initial stage, the first-two years are to be taken in
the Andalas University, Indonesia, while in the second
stage the second-two years are to be taken in
Kagoshima University, Japan
During his/her study student is to take all subjects
which, according to the requirement, are compulsory
for minimum 30 credits. Specialization is to be taken at
the second semester of his/her study in Andalas
University. All the subjects required to complete the
specialization should be taken considering the
respective subjects are exempted from Andalas
University.

The remaining subjects including Master
Thesis will be taken at the Kagoshima
University with 30 credits. Their thesis
should be based on field work in Indonesia
at the end of the second semester.
Upon completion of the second stage of
his/her study student will be awarded
Master degree from the respective
university overseas. The title of the Master
degree will automatically follow the degree
awarded by the respective university.
