N
obles and Ladies: Our
year keeps getting
more and more exciting as the days go by. I have
continued my visits to Lodges
and Clubs throughout Oasis
territory. It is exciting to see
so much positive activity in all
of our Clubs and Units.
Lady Mary and I were guests
at two of those dynamic clubs
during the early part of August. We enjoyed a wonderful
meeting at Thermal Belt Club,
and likewise a great meeting
at Crowders Mountain. The
devotion and enthusiasm at
these clubs is exactly what the
Shrine is all about.
Lady Mary and I had the opportunity to visit the home of
Noble Terry and Lady Janice
Cox for a social gathering.
The low country boil was
excellent, and we thoroughly
enjoyed seeing many Shriners, Ladies and friends.
Once more, Piedmont Shrine
Club conducted a very successful Golf Tournament. The
weather was great and lots of
money was raised for our
burned and crippled children. Good job, Piedmont.
I was honored to attend the
44th Annual Gaston Shrine
100 race on August 11th.
And I was even more honored to be able to sit in one of
those powerful automobiles,
or perhaps they should be
called rockets. This event has
been held since 1972, and
has raised well over a million dollars for our Hospitals.
Each year, it typically brings
in over $60,000.00. It takes
a great deal of work, a lot of
talent and coordination, and
a special dedication to hold
this event. Many thanks go to
the hard-working Nobles and
Ladies of Gaston Shrine Club
for this special event.
I have attended several 3rd
Degree ceremonies in local
Lodges to see some of the
men being raised who will
become Nobles at our fall
Ceremonial. I look forward
to seeing a record-breaking
class of Nobles in October.
Oasis Shrine held a first-time
function on August 15th with
the Concealed Carry Class for
Shriners and Ladies in our
region. The event was very
successful, with 28 participants completing the classwork and proficiency tests to
receive their Concealed Carry
Permits. We applaud these
Shriners and Ladies for wanting to become responsible
gun-owners.
The word on the street is
that the Genealogy Class was
a huge success. Thanks are
extended to Noble Chad Delp
for his help in coordinating
and leading this class.
I am hearing lots of excitement in anticipation of our
September gathering of the
South Atlantic Shrine Association (SASA). The Association
and Oasis have lots of special
plans for fun and fellowship
during this weekend. For the
first time in recent history,
the parade will take place on
Friday night, and Oasis has
24 of our units committed
to participate. The banquet
on Saturday night will be the
highlight of the weekend, and
you really do not want to miss
it. I hope to see you there.
Look in this edition of the

mation, and for the Schedule
of Events.
Moving into the future, we
are looking forward to October for the Oxford Orphanage
(Masonic Home for Children)
Homecoming on October
10th. That is always a great
event, featuring our only yearly parade which combines all
three North Carolina Shrine
centers. And as mentioned
above, the Fall Ceremonial
on October 30th and 31st.
Rumor has it that there will
be lots of ghosts and goblins
I want to once again thank
the Nobles and Ladies of Oasis Shrine for their dedication and unselfish work for
the Shrine and for our Shrine
Hospitals for Children. I am
so proud to be the Potentate
for such an excellent group of
people who help, on a daily
basis, make Oasis Shrine live
up to its reputation as the
largest and best Shrine center in the world. You have
helped to set the bar for other
Shrine centers, and I know it
makes an impact worldwide.
You folks are the best.
Yours in the Faith
Todd

Meet Ellie
Like any other 5-year-old girl, Ellie is full of life, on
the move and loves to laugh. However, when she
was diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia at 8
months old, her parents were unsure of what the
future may hold for their oldest child.
“Cerebellar Hypoplasia is
a rare genetic disorder;
the baby is born without
part of the cerebellum,
which controls balance,
equilibrium, eye movement
and the mechanics of
speech,” explains Ellie’s
dad, Donald. “In order to
improve fine and gross
motor skills, physical and
occupational therapies are needed.”
Within two months of beginning therapy at Shriners
Hospitals for Children – Greenville, Ellie can not
only stand independently for longer periods of
time, but can also now brush her teeth, use utensils
better and take her shoes on and off.
Each milestone is important progress for Ellie
and her family, who relocated to Greenville from
Roanoke, Virginia largely due to the care she could
receive regularly at Greenville Shriners Hospital.
“I want donors to understand just how appreciative
our family, and the many families that I see at
the hospital on a weekly
basis, are for the amazing
care our children receive
from top-notch doctors and
medical staff,” Donald said.
“From our first visit, Shriners
provided consultations and
test results within hours –
while other medical facilities
had taken weeks. Everyone
at the hospital is secondto-none when it comes to
working with children with
disabilities. ”
Toys, interactive games and
displays as well as comfortable accommodations
are all part of the Shriners experience to Ellie and
her family. According to her father, the big sister
thrives at the hospital due to constant stimulation
during her visits.
“My dad was a Shriner before
he passed away many years
ago,” said Donald. “I know
that he is so proud of what his
fellow Shriners have done
to create such a wonderful
hospital … it’s like we’ve
come full circle as a family
with Shriners. The hospital
means the world to us.”

All Blue Lodge
Ambassadors
Patients and their families, along with staff of SHC – Chicago,
experienced the excitement of the 2015 NFL Draft, when 18
of the top NFL prospects visited the hospital. A cheer line of
staff and Shriners welcomed players and led them into the
Ballreich Activity Mall, where all of the fun began. Recreation therapist, Amanda Loomis, led patients and players in
a warm-up session before everyone paired off to participate
in an adaptive obstacle course and other activities, including air hockey, bags, ping pong, and foosball. Another station
was filled with arts and crafts, where patients and players
made football pillows, which the players signed.
“I had so much fun, and this is an experience I will never
forget,” said 17-year-old Kathy Skoczen, one of our patients.
Angela Thompson, mother of Mackenzie, another patient
here, said, “This is truly something Mackenzie will never
forget. We watched the draft that night, and Mackenzie’s
partner was picked third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was really neat!”
One of the highlights of the visit was 12-year-old patient
Alec Cabacungan’s interview of four of the top prospects.
Alec, a die-hard sports fan, plans to be a sports reporter/
commentator someday. Once you meet Alec, you know he’s
only a few years away from making it big in the broadcasting industry.

Mayes to Enter Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame
PHIL PERRY
Staff Writer
Lincoln Times-News
W
hen the Charlotte
Broadcast Hall of Fame
inducts its inaugural
class on August 21, one Lincoln
County resident and inductee
plans to be present for the ceremony, despite a recent health
scare that left him hospitalized
for weeks.
“It is a speed bump in the road,
my friend”, Doug Mayes said,
from his home in the community
of Westport on Lake Norman. “I
always tell people I have worn
out 35 doctors in the area since
I moved here”
“The biggest thing that radio
taught me was that I needed to
listen when doing interviews,”
Mayes said. “There is nothing
more embarrassing than asking a
question that was answered earlier in the interview.”
Mayes, along with 10 other
honorees and many attendees,
will be treated to special guest
speaker and former WBTV reporter Bill Whitaker, of “60 Minutes on CBS” fame.
“What an honor,” Mayes said.
“I’m really not worthy of such
recognition. There are so
many other deserving broadcasters from the area. I’m very
humbled.”
Mayes, 93, suffered a stroke on
March 1 and after a stint in rehabilitation, has been making strides
DESERT DUST SEPTEMBER 2015 PAGE 11
Prior to his anchor work at WBTV “It was a fun time to be in the
and WSOC-TV, Mayes also honed business,” Mayes said. “We
his craft as a newsman on WBT worked very hard but we laughed
a lot, too.”
Radio in Charlotte.

and beginning to feel better.
“It was an ordeal,” he said. “So
many people were kind enough
to check in on me. I love each
and every one of them. God
bless you.”
Piedmont Shrine Club Golf Tournament
Mayes began his broadcasting
career reading the news in Nashville, Tennessee and gained experience reading the news of World
War II while in the U.S. Navy.
The man many refer to as “Charlotte’s First Anchor” made the
switch to television in 1952.
Mayes became one of the six “Esso
Reporters” in the country, sharing
the honor with Walter Cronkite.
“Through the years, I made so
many great friends in this business,” he said. “I consider myself a very fortunate man. I really
enjoy the conversation and the
friendship of so many.”
Mayes was known for his rich vocal timbre, as identifiable as home
for many of his faithful listeners.
“Good radio people understand
inflection and how to emphasize,”
he said. “I learned by listening to
others and trying to develop an
identifiable style.”
Oasis Steel Drum Band
One of Mayes more popular segments during his tenure on WBTV
was titled, “Our Kind of People.”
The quirky weekly piece found
the anchor interviewing area people who lived their life to the beat
of their own drum.
“I would talk to weirdos, banjo
pickers and anyone else with an
interesting story to tell,” he said.
“I got the title from my grandmother. Whenever someone
moved into the neighborhood,
she would always say, ‘Don’t play
with those kids. They aren’t our
kind of people’”
Mayes couldn’t pinpoint a particular moment that was his proudest. Ever modest and humble,
Mayes downplays the fact that
WBTV led in Nielson news ratings
during his tenure for many years,
prompting a personal visit from
Walter Cronkite, who wanted to
say “thank you” for professionally
leading viewers to the CBS Evening News. WSOC-TV achieved
the same feat with Mayes at the
news desk in the 1980’s, reaching
more than 750,000 people.
Mayes musical prowess found
him hauling his “dog-house
bass” around with him while
serving in bluegrass legend Bill
Monroe’s touring band throughout the summer of 1940. He also
had a lifelong friendship with late
legendary guitarist Chet Atkins.
He has stood on the stage at the
Grand Ole Oprey and plucked his
bass. He has been awarded the
“Order of the Long Leaf Pine”,
which serves as the highest honor
for any North Carolinian. According to Mayes, it all means nothing
without one ingredient.
“It’s about the people.” He said.
“Without the people, what good is
any of it?”
The Charlotte Broadcast Hall of
Fame was created by a collection
of Central Piedmont Community
College staff and community volunteers. The HOF is housed in
the WTVI PBS Charlotte Studio.
The 2015 class also includes Grady
Cole (WBTV), Charles Crutchfield (WBT/WBTV), Betty Feezor
(WBTV), Earle Gluck (WBT), Rev.
Billy Graham, Stan and Sis Kaplan,
Charles Kuralt (WBT/CBS), Larry
Sprinkle (WROQ/WCNC) and Bill
Walker (WSOC).
The event will be held at noon at
the Charlotte City Club at 121 West
Trade Street.

TAKE COURAGE—DO NOT FEAR!
“To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom”. Bertrand Russell
www.oasiscampers.us
David White, President 828-234-1293 [email protected]
WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF
FEAR! We fear public speaking. We fear being in a car
crash, we fear having cancer,
or of cancer returning. We
fear out living our money.
And to live a peaceful life, we
must learn to conquer our
fears. Bertrand Russell said:
“To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom”.
In the storms of life it is easy
to lose our faith. But losing
our faith is the worse thing
we can do. We lose our faith
when concentrate on the
storms, the huge waves engulfing us. That is when we
lose confidence.
The other day, Rev. Dr. John
Frye, Sr. Pastor of First Presbyterian, Gastonia said,
“Phrases such as “do not
fear” appear 476 times in
the Bible.”
God reminds
us to take courage, to trust
in Him. Jesus Christ said:
“Take courage. It is I. Don’t
be afraid”.
When faced with the storms
of life, when we are afraid,
God gives us words to live by
when he has his prophet Jeremiah to write: “For I know
the plans I have for you”
declares the Lord, “plans to
prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope
and a future.”
And, another writer of the
Bible says: “(We are to be)
joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
Finally, we remember the
words of Psalm 23: “The Lord
is my Sheppard, I shall not
want”.
John H. Stanley,
P.M., P.P., Chaplain
So, armed with such promises from our Lord, we face
the world with courage, faith
and hope. The option is ours,
we can choose to live in fear,
or we can live our lives by
“Taking courage”. We hope
that you have a great month.
Blessings, peace and grace.
John Stanley, P.M.,P.P. is Chaplain, McLean Funeral Director, and Minister of Visitation of First
Presbyterian, Gastonia. In the fiscal Shrine Year, 2012-13, he served Shriners International Imperial
Potentate Al Madsen as Imperial Chaplain. He can be reached at [email protected].

Gator Tales SUMMER 2015
Twenty-six Gators and Gals meandered up the mountains to Bent River
Estates and the mountain cabin of David and Carolyn Crawley in Lansing, NC
for our July 25th Gator Meeting. The
West Jefferson area weather could
not have been more perfect for most
of that Saturday...after suffering blistering heat in the Hickory area for the
past two weeks, it was nice to enjoy
the 79 degree temps around the North
fork of the New River.
Some of the younger Gators and Gals
floated down the New River but Most
of the folks chilled on the porch enjoying the fellowship. All enjoyed the delicious burgers and hot dogs prepared
by David and Judy Bowman, and many
shared their special desserts and
snacks during the afternoon. Wherever we are, “when we meet, we eat.”
Cost is $150.00 per knife
or purchase drawing tickets at $5.00 per ticket or $20.00 for ten tickets.
All proceeds
will go to help the Moore County Shrine Club support the Children’s Hospitals.
Drawing will be conducted 12/15/15.

10 Reasons You Shouldn’t Allow Your Kids
to Join the Masonic Youth Groups
1. You shouldn’t allow your children to join the Masonic
Youth groups if they’re perfect.
As parents we all like to think that our children are perfect.
Sometimes we fool ourselves into believing that we’re also
perfect, but the truth is that we all have something we want
to change about ourselves. In the Masonic Youth groups we
try to instill in our kids the ability to love ourselves for who
we are. We all have our own talents, and we strive to let their
individual lights shine while at the same time appreciating the
lights of others. The amazing Jane Goodall said it best, “Every
individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every
individual makes a difference.”
2. You shouldn’t allow your children to join the Masonic
Youth groups if you don’t want a family.
Our Masonic family is huge – sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles, and more grandparents than you can count, and all are
welcome and encouraged to attend our events. Sure, we may
fight at times, like all families do, but we know that we can rely
on each other to be there to pick us up after a rough day, to
be brutally honest when we ask for advice, and to celebrate
our accomplishments in grand style. As a parent, you’ll find
that you start to view the members of these groups as your
own children – you will cheer them on, and celebrate their
victories with them, and you will ache for them during their
defeats, but you’ll also encourage them to keep going, to keep
striving to do better and to be better, and before you know it,
they’ll have grown into an adult that you are so proud of, and
one day they’ll thank you for all of the love and support you
gave them during their formidable years.
3. You might want to consider another youth group if your
kids don’t like to have a good time.
Sure, we’re social, but we mean that you shouldn’t let your
kids join the Masonic Youth groups if they aren’t ready for a
genuinely happier life. Between service projects, dances and
fun events, there’s really never a dull moment. They should be
prepared for surprise bear hugs and for all- night sleepovers.
They should be prepared for fits of laughter and for feeling
the happy comfort of utter exhaustion after pouring your heart
into a project to benefit someone else.

4. Don’t let your kids join the Masonic Youth groups if they
aren’t ready to be inspired.
From volunteering for different charities, to working to improve their public speaking, to mastering the lessons of their
groups, the Masonic Youth tackle lots of challenging hurdles
but ultimately walk away with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Whether they dream of becoming a successful veterinarian, a talented musician, or a professional athlete, the
Masonic Youth learn that they can accomplish anything and
that they can make a difference.

5. You shouldn’t choose the Masonic Youth groups if you don’t
want your children to lead active lives of service.
The Masonic Youth groups believe that through helping others, we truly help ourselves. The benefits a young person can
gain from performing acts of kindness are endless—pride
from volunteering for a community clean-up project, the joy
of playing checkers with a senior citizen, and the accomplishment of raising funds to support another charitable organization. These are all ways that the Masonic Youth groups guide
young people toward becoming responsible, caring adults.

6. You shouldn’t let your kids join the Masonic Youth groups if
you aren’t willing to let them fall in love with your community.
We value service, and while each Assembly/Chapter does
something slightly different to make their corner of the world
a little better, the Masonic Youth groups everywhere strive to
know and love the people around them. We’re big on community service and Masonic involvement, so they need to be
ready for some hard work and for some big rewards.
7. You shouldn’t let your kids join the Masonic Youth groups
if you don’t want them to get to know kids from other states
and counties.
The Masonic Youth groups are diverse, multicultural organizations with Assemblies and Chapters located throughout the
United States, Aruba, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Romania,
and Uruguay. Through international conventions as well as
through social media, many members of the Masonic Youth
groups make friends all over the world.
8. You shouldn’t let your kids join the Masonic Youth groups if
they don’t have a silly side.
As much as we might hate to admit it, some of us are absolutely obsessed with theater. Others of us totally geek out with all
night gaming. Either way, no matter what your thing is, there’s
somebody to share that with.
9. Don’t let your kids join the Masonic Youth groups to find
their best friends.
Members of our Masonic Youth groups share a common bond
in the ideals we profess and the promises we make to each
other– to be better sons/daughters, better brothers/sisters,
better young men/women in all that we do. As brothers and
sisters, we support each other in our moments of triumph and
despair. It has been said that “once a DeMolay/Rainbow, always a DeMolay/Rainbow,” meaning that our friendships will
not end. Our commitment to each other is greater than that of
casual friends, because we are pledged to be life-long brothers and sisters and will help each other as our time and resources permit.
10. The biggest reason you absolutely shouldn’t allow your
children to join the Masonic Youth groups is if they aren’t
ready for the most incredible years of their lives.
The Masonic Youth groups strive to give kids the tools, training,
and encouragement to let their individual spirits shine bright.
By providing members with a safe, fun, caring environment
where responsible, older members can interact and mentor
younger members through family involvement. We want to lift
your kids up and walk with them as they find and learn to love
themselves for the beautiful and courageous people they are.
The truth is you should allow your children to join the Masonic
Youth groups. They will find their best friends, future college
roommates, and even some of their future bridesmaids and
groomsmen. They may even find their future bride or groom.
But they will definitely impact your community in ways you
can’t even imagine yet. They will absolutely have the best experience with us, and so will you.

Specialty care beyond a burn
Shriners Play a Big Role in Referrals
New DVD Available To Help
Shriners Spread the Word
When it comes to finding medical help for
Children, Shriners are more important
than ever. Members have always played
a crucial role in helping families in their
communities get connected with Shriners
Hospitals for Children® - Cincinnati and
now it is easier than ever.
The DVD is an excellent tool that Shriners
can use when speaking at community and
church groups, fire fighter presentations,
Shriner Fraternal events and more. This DVD,
along with Cincinnati’s new website, www.
shrinershospitalcincinnati.org, and Shriner
Referral Cards add to the patient referral tool box
that Shriners have at their disposal to spread the
word about Cincinnati Shriners Hospital.
It’s easy for Shriners to refer a child to
Shriners Hospitals for Children-Cincinnati
A DVD with two patient stories is now
available for Shriners to help get the
word out about the care families receive
at Shriners Hospitals for Children Cincinnati.
The stories focus on two Cincinnati
patients and their families: Dylan, who
has a congenital melanocytic nevus
condition requiring multiple surgeries;
and Scotty, a burn patient who was
transferred to Cincinnati after receiving
care at another burn hospital.
Spread the word about Shriners Hospitals
for Children - Cincinnati by handing out Shriner
Referral Cards, directing families to the Cincinnati
hospital website, speaking at church and
community meetings, and playing the heart-felt
stories on the new DVD.
Efforts like this help us continue our mission of
providing a wide range of specialty services for
patients like Dylan and Scotty.
DVD Ordering and Questions
To obtain a copy of the DVD, call Cincinnati’s
hospital resource, Debbie Harrell, Director of
Professional Relations at 513-872-6277, or
email her at [email protected] with any
questions or requests.
When it comes to finding medical help for
children, Shriners are now more important
than ever. Members of the fraternity have
always played a critical role in helping families
in their communities get connected with
Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati,
and now it has become even easier with a
website and referral cards.
Website
Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati
continues to make referring a patient
and obtaining an appointment for care
easier than ever through the www.
shrinershospitalcincinnati.org website.
Every page has a Schedule an Appointment
and a Contact Us feature; both are easy forms
that families can complete and submit online
directly to the hospital.
Referral Cards
Referral cards are also a great resource
that Nobles can use. These cards allow
families easy access to hospital information
and services. The cards provide hospital
contact information to assist in scheduling
appointments. On the back of each card is
space for the Shriner’s name and Temple.
Please stop by the Business Development
office to pick cards up, or call 513-872-6391
to have them mailed to your temple.
