Community Outreach
Please contact Deb Jones, Community Outreach Coordinator, for resources for
community members who are in need of food, housing, heating, medical care, clothing,
and employment. The Coordinator serves as a liaison to services in our community and is
available to meet with community members at the GEARS Community Center, 70 South
Poplar Street. Contact Deb at 367.0119 to schedule an appointment.
The Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown provides supplemental food to individuals,
families, and seniors with fixed incomes. It is conveniently located at 206 S. Market
Street and open on Wednesday and Saturdays. Please call the Community Cupboard at
361.8149 (leave a message) for additional information. Volunteers and donations are
needed and are welcomed from the community.
Meals on Wheels of Elizabethtown delivers one hot and one cold meal daily (Monday
through Friday except holidays) to seniors and qualifying individuals in need of shortterm help. For more information, contact 367.8528.
Clothing Bank of Elizabethtown is open to the community on the second Saturday of
each month from 9-10 am at the GEARS Community Center, 70 South Poplar Street.

Summer Playground Program
This Summer, your child can have fun with other kids right in your own
neighborhood park or elementary school. Program leaders will lead supervised,
quality recreation activities. Kids will learn social and physical skills through
recreation activities, but it’s more than fun and games. This program promotes
good citizenship among children, and the fun activities keep kids active and
entertained.

“drop-in” activities for children and is not a substitute for childcare.
Attendance is not mandatory nor enforced. Be sure to inform your child of
your expectations regarding attendance.

Art Adventure Camp
Calling all future Mad Scientists! Come
join the fun of making your own ooey,
gooey slime and your own tye dye shirt.
Show your friends the cool ornament
that you will make from zinc and
hydrochloric acid. You will also play
detective and catch the person who
stole chemicals from the lab. Sign up

Young artists will spend each morning
of this art camp exploring Artists past
and present while designing unique
projects each day. Students should
come prepared to learn new skills and
techniques and not be afraid to get
a little messy in the process. 2D/3D
projects as well as painting and drawing

4 days of Art! Perfect for the creative
kiddo in your life to challenge them
and keep them busy during the summer

Art-rageous
Boys Lacrosse Camp
Learn how to draw your favorite
cartoon characters, or make up your
own cartoon characters! Then apply
these characters to your own comic
strip! At the end of this camp you
will understand the basics of pencil
rendering. Shading, detail and shapes
will also be discussed. Supplies for this
class are included in the fee. Camp will
be taught by Gabrielle Veith, certified
teacher, freelance artist and clothing
designer. Ages 6-12

Off-season is the time for improvement!
Players will improve on their stick skills,
positioning and knowledge of the game.

worlds of texture, line, shape and color

CSI E-town
Do you like to solve mysteries? Do you
like solving puzzles? Join us for CSI
E-town forensics camp. We will use REAL
forensic techniques to solve mysteries.
We will investigate fingerprints,
unknown white powders, unknown ink
samples and mystery liquids. Each day
we will learn a new forensic technique
and then use it to solve a crime. E-town
HS Chemistry teacher, Scott Baylor, will
instruct. Ages 9-14

Step into Harry’s world of witchcraft
and wizardry as a student of our very
own Hogwarts. Study potions, care of
magical creatures, herbology, charms,
defense against the dark arts and
transfiguration classes. Campers will
concoct bubbly potions and even try
Bertie Botts Beans and Butter Bear.

Participants will focus on building
tennis fundamentals with emphasis on

Illustration Class: Students will learn
the different rendering pencils to use
when drawing as well as the different
techniques to use while applying pencil
shading to their drawing. Students will
focus these techniques on creating
their own fictional character. Their
character can be applied to a short
story. Participants will take home a book
or two that they have created. Teacher
will work with student according to age
and level. Ages 6-13

2016 Camp Ladybug
This camp is for individuals who have mental and/or physical
challenges. This camp provides a fun atmosphere where campers may
participate in socialization skills and recreational activities. Activities
include games, special appearances, visits to local recreation sites and
fun learning!
Camp Lady Bug started the Summer
of 1968 as a result of a group of parents who
wanted a summer activity that would keep
their children with special needs in a routine
that kept their minds and bodies active. GEARS
began administrating the Camp in 2002.

Quick Start Tennis
Gymnastics
Children of any skill level will learn the
fundamentals of tennis using the RED or
ORANGE balls and smaller courts. Older
participants will transition to regular balls
and a 60 foot court. Instructors will teach to
appropriate skill and age level. Ages 8-12

reason, Zumba Gold is the way to go!

and heart-pumping physical activity that’s so

Hatha Flow Yoga
Multi-level class incorporates yoga poses,
conscious breathing and a meditative focus
to foster strength, flexibility and relaxation.
Each class includes the following phases:
checking in and warming up; building heat
and awakening energy; focused strength,
balance and breath work; deep stretching
and a final relaxation. Various options
will be provided for more or less intensity
throughout the class so that it is tailored to
individual participant needs. Participants
should wear layers of comfortable clothing
and bring a yoga mat, strap and block. Class
will be taught by Charla Lorenzen, a certified
Hatha Yoga instructor. No experience
necessary. Ages 14+

If you are about to turn age 65 and
confused by Medicare, this class is designed
specifically for you! The basics of Medicare
will be explained, including how and when
to sign up for Medicare, what is covered by

Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) and a
Medicare Advantage plan. Additionally, we
will walk through how to find a plan that

Moo-Duk-Kwan Karate
All ages are invited to play in this program.
Pickle-Ball is a combination of tennis and
badminton played on a badminton sized
court with lightweight paddles and plastic
perforated balls (much like wiffle balls).
These elements produce exciting, long
rallies which consist of volleys at the net and
ground strokes similar to tennis. Pickle-Ball is
a great equalizer for differences in age, sex,

The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center is an activity center for the well-elderly
area residents over 60 years old located in the GEARS Community Center. The Center has a
large service area that includes the communities of Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Maytown,
Mount Joy, Salunga, Landisville, Mastersonville and Manheim. Door-to-door transportation
is available for participants, as needed. The Senior Center is open Monday-Friday from
8:30 am-3 pm and Friday evening from 5-11 pm. Call the center for a complete list of daily

Registration for the 2016-17 Before and After
School Program is OPEN!
We offer care for children in Kindergarten – 6th grade who attend Bear Creek, East High,
Mill Road and Rheems Elementary schools. We are located right in the school building so
families can drop off and pick up directly at the school. We open at 6 am, offer a breakfast

• There is a convenience fee to register online, the minimum being $2.
• A confirmation of your registration will be e-mailed to you.
Confirmations/Receipts
Once you sign up it is your responsibility to
attend the activity. No confirmations or receipts
will be sent unless you wish to provide a selfaddressed, stamped envelope.

Refunds/Transfers
GEARS strives to offer you high quality recreation programs. We are confident
that you will like these programs - so confident that we will ensure our
promises to provide that high quality. GEARS guarantees that you will be
satisfied with our recreation programs. If not satisfied, tell us and we will
arrange for you to do one of the following: 1} Repeat the class at no charge.
2} Receive full credit that can be applied to another program. 3} Receive
a full refund. If you are not satisfied, we kindly request your input in the
form of suggestions, comments, ideas or changes for improvement. Refund
applications may be acquired by calling or writing the GEARS Office. To obtain
a full refund, requests must be made in writing on the provided application
within 10 business days after the last class date. (Exceptions: sports leagues,
tournaments and bus trips). For refund requests due to reasons other than
dissatisfaction, illness/injury or an emergency, a small processing fee will be
deducted from the refund amount.
Miscellaneous
The class size of all programs listed in this
brochure will be limited. Individuals must
sign-up before attending any classes, unless
otherwise noted. Sign-up is accepted on a
first come, first serve basis. GEARS does not
provide accident insurance. Individuals must
