Placer Title Company Quality of Life Walnut Creek has exceptional balance: Open space, residential areas, an active business and commercial community, parks, entertainment, and recreation. No age group dominates. It is a comfortable city with apartment complexes, condominiums, single family dwellings, and multi acre ranch estates. Senior Citizens can find housing close to Walnut Creek’s downtown and their community center offers a great many activities. Rossmoor, Northern California’s largest community for people fifty-five and older, boasts a population of over eight thousand in its beautiful secluded valley. Representative officers of large national corporations exist beside local professionals and retail businesses in downtown. Business areas are distinct from residential areas, yet close enough for convenient shopping, commuting, dining, and entertainment. Massive Mt. Diablo dominates the local landscape. Its lovely grassy slopes and the other undeveloped ridges that help separate the city from surrounding communities are eloquent inspiration for Walnut Creek’s long standing commitment to open space. In fact, the city’s 2,500 acres of open space may be the most per capita for any urban community in the United States. In 1989, Walnut Creek was the first California Community to receive the National Conference of Mayors’ City Livability Award for a city less the 100,000. Livable is an apt description for Walnut Creek, where residents and visitors can take advantage of so many amenities. www.PlacerTitle.com Contra Costa County Relocation Placer, Putting People First. 1 Placer Title Company Early risers breakfast in cafes and coffee shops where they chat with regulars or network with business associates. Shoppers can choose from numerous downtown shops, boutiques, and department stores at Broadway Plaza, or Plaza Escuela, Arron Brothers, World Market, and more than a dozen other stores, Whole Foods and other convenient neighborhood shopping centers, are also abundant When you tire of Shopping, Walnut Creek offers over one hundred restaurants of almost any style of food imaginable. Local outdoor enthusiasts have a wide choice of trails and open spaces where they can jog, bicycle, hike, or even ride horses. The climate, generally warm and comfortable, allows people to get out and enjoy Walnut Creek almost any time of year. www.PlacerTitle.com 2 Placer, Putting People First. Contra Costa County Relocation Placer Title Company Years ago, Walnut Creek made a commitment to provide the kinds of activities and services that would benefit the entire community. Today, tennis, swimming, softball, and other sports are available at municipal parks. Extensive educational programs provide continuing education for both adults and children. Yet the city provides these amenities in such a way that much of it pays for itself through fees, volunteerism, and careful planning. Excellent educational programs in public and private schools, plus diverse recreational opportunities, reflect a strong commitment to the youth of the community. The Regional Center for the Arts, completed in 1991, enriches the community with concerts, dance and dramatic productions. The Lindsay Museum has a modern facility where it will continue to care for injured and sick wildlife and educate the community about their splendid natural surroundings. Joining the Lindsay Museum in their concern for animals is the Animal Rescue Foundation in Shade-land’s Business Park. For those who need more variety, San Francisco or the world famous Napa Valley wine region are less than an hour away. Just a couple of hours drive to the east, spectacular Lake Tahoe and the historic gold country in the Sierra Foothills, offer still more recreational diversion, as well as some of the most beautiful scenery found in the country. www.PlacerTitle.com Contra Costa County Relocation Placer, Putting People First. 3 Placer Title Company The Hub Walnut Creek is the crossroads where major ground transportation links intersect in Contra Costa County. Physically distinct from its immediate neighbors, Walnut Creek is conveniently close to San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and the East Bay Area. It is also home to corporate, professional and retail businesses that provide employment for tens of thousand of residents of Contra Costa and surrounding counties. From its very beginning as “The Corners” Walnut Creek has been a critical intersection for routes from San Francisco to Sacramento and San Jose to Martinez. In 1849 when William Slusher built his home on the bank of “Nuts Creek” (currently the site of the Broadway Plaza Parking Garage) the Corners became the collection and transshipment point for wheat grown in the Diablo and San Ramon Valleys, once the “bread-basket” of the Bay Area. Walnut Creek was formally named when the first U.S. Post Office was established in 1862. It was not until October 21, 1914, that the original town and surrounding area of five hundred acres were incorporated as the eighth city in Contra Costa County. Growth was slow and steady in the early decades, and with the advent of irrigation to the valleys around town, fruit trees gradually replaced wheat as the primary cash crop. Walnut Creek Served as a social and religious center for the surround farm lands. www.PlacerTitle.com 4 Placer, Putting People First. Contra Costa County Relocation Placer Title Company Walnut Creek has managed to retain its character by setting strict standards for development. Strong design review focuses emphasis on landscaping and the preservation of open space. The city has been the vanguard of urban development in terms of architectural control since 1971, when it adopted its first General Plan. Anticipating rapid commercial and residential growth, the General Plan emphasized development in the downtown core area and enabled the building of major office and retail structures within specific boundaries. By keeping these business developments within certain areas, the ordinance prevented indiscriminate urban sprawl and allowed residential areas to remain quiet and retain their essential character. Walnut Creek’s commitment to planned development continues today. Growth management issues continue to dominate political discussion, as commercial building, traffic, and regional development affect all areas of the county. In recent years, new office complexes have emerged to provide ample space for businesses that have chosen to settle in Walnut Creek, for both its proximity to the Greater Bay Area and its broad array of amenities. Walnut Creek’s rich history, excellent quality of live, commitment to the arts, and successful business climate all contribute to its role as the economic and cultural hub of the East Bay. www.PlacerTitle.com Contra Costa County Relocation Placer, Putting People First. 5 Placer Title Company Phone Numbers Emergency for Police, Fire or Medical . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 911 Fire Department (non emergency) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Borges family home, built in 1901, houses historical displays of turn-of-thecentury life. Francisco (Frank) Broges was only 17 when he hopped a train to California, drawn by colorful stories of Cowboys and vast ranches. He arrived in Vacaville and became a cowboy at the Chandler Ranch. There he met Mary Vieira, a cook at the Chandler home. They married in 1888, moved to Elmira and started a store there with Mary’s brothers Manuel and Joe. In 1899, Mary became ill with malaria. As a result, she suffered from chills and high fevers. A doctor advised the family to move to a milder climate. Frank became interested in some land in the Concord hills which a friend suggested might have a climate better for Mary’s health. On a trip to San Francisco, Frank stopped and saw the land and knew it was perfect for raising both his family and healthy cattle. He bought 700 acres at $4.50 per acre from the Union Savings Bank. With only one wagonload of household goods and a handful of orphaned calves, the Borges family arrived at their new ranch. The only building was a three sided cabin nestled in a grove of apricot trees. The family lived in the cabin until, 1901, then moved into the redwood house which still stands today. Since then, Borges Ranch has gone from being a successful cattle ranch to the preserved historical site it is today. www.PlacerTitle.com 12 Placer, Putting People First. Contra Costa County Relocation Placer Title Company Today Borges Ranch is a ranger station, maintenance facility and ranger residence. The ranch is also home to numerous animals cared for by the Pleasant Hill 4-H, including goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. The cattle you’ll see belong to a local rancher who leases grazing rights for the Shell Ridge open space. An Environmental/Living History Program is offered at the ranch for school aged children, college and civic groups to provide a hands-on ranching experience Tuesday through Thursday. Call (925) 942-0225. The ranch area is open for viewing daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Self guided tour brochures are available. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed at all times. Pets are not permitted at programs, tours or events. www.PlacerTitle.com Contra Costa County Relocation Placer, Putting People First. 13 Placer Title Company 1500 Bancroft Road (925) 210-9663 www.ruthbancroftgarden.org Preserving an exceptional example of American Garden design, the Ruth Bancroft Garden Demonstrates the beauty and excitement possible in a water-conserving landscape. Internationally recognized as one of the finest private gardens in North America, the garden was the first in the United States to be sponsored by The Garden Conservancy. The Ruth Bancroft Garden is part of what was once the Bancroft Farm, a 400 acre property bought by publisher Hubert Howe Bancroft in the 1880’s to grow pears and walnuts. In the 1940’s his grandson Phillip and Phillip’s wife Ruth took over the property. In the 1950’s Ruth Bancroft brought home a single succulent plant, a hybrid aeonium grown by Ms. Glenn Davidson. This formed a nucleus for what became an extensive collection of cacti and succulents. In 1972, the collection had grown beyond the space available to house it. Philip Bancroft offered Ruth a three acre orchard, filled with dying walnut Trees, as a site for a succulent garden. Ruth, then in her 60’s, seized this opportunity. She enlisted Lester Hawkins, co-owner of the Western Hills Nursery, to design the garden beds. Ruth herself designed the Folly and chose the plants. All the plants in the Garden were planted out from one gallon or smaller containers. By trial and error, Ruth discovered how each species grows, and which texture and color combinations were most effective. www.PlacerTitle.com 14 Placer, Putting People First. Contra Costa County Relocation Placer Title Company In 1988, The Garden was chosen as the first garden to be sponsored by The Garden Conservancy, an organization dedicated to preserving outstanding examples of private gardens. Today, with many mature specimens, the Garden is an outstanding example of using xerophytes (dry-growing plants) in the landscape. The garden also houses important collections of aloes, agaves, yuccas, and echeverias. Aeonium “Glenn Davidson” the first succulent in Ruth’s collection, is still growing in the Garden. The Ruth Bancroft Garden rose above the status of a collection to become a preeminent demonstration of the art of garden design. Working primarily with dramatic forms of her beloved succulents, Mrs. Bancroft has created bold and varied compositions in which the colors, textures, and patterns of foliage provide a setting for the sparkle of floral color. Hours are 1:00 pm the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. Reservations are required and there is a $5.00 per person entry fee Members are admitted free. www.PlacerTitle.com Contra Costa County Relocation Placer, Putting People First. 15 Placer Title Company Shadelands Ranch Historical Museum (925) 935-7871 In the mid 1960’s local historian Isabelle Spencer Brubaker proposed to the Walnut Creek Women’s Club the idea of forming a local historical society. The first meeting of the Walnut Creek Historical Society was held November 06,1967, and a Charter Night banquet was held February 14,1968. In November 1970, the Gospel Foundation of California gave to the City of Walnut Creek the remaining one and one-half acres of the former Hiram Penniman ranch, including the 1903 family house, at 2660 Ygnacio Valley Road. Mary Liddecoat, director of the Gospel Foundation, suggested the house be used as a historical museum. The historical society was given permission by the City to use the property for such a purpose, and the Shadelands Ranch Historical Museum was officially opened November 18,1972. Built by Walnut Creek pioneer Hiram Penniman, this 1903 redwood-framed house is a showcase for numerous historical artifacts, many of which belonged to the Pennimans. It also houses a rich archive of Contra Costa and Walnut Creek history in its collections of old newspaper, photographs and government records. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and belongs to the City, but is operated by the Walnut Creek Historical Society. www.PlacerTitle.com 16 Placer, Putting People First.
