Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church The Valley Voice Volume 1, Issue 1 Dr. Dwayne Boudreaux Senior Pastor July 2011 “From Your Pastor’s Heart” Rev. Terry Chitwood Worship & Admin Pastor Dr. Dwayne Boudreaux Senior Pastor Rev. Tommy Vowell Youth & Education Pastor Rev. LeBron Durham Children’s Pastor What is prayer? There are many complicated answers that have been given to that question. But prayer can be simply understood by the following statement: “Prayer is talking to and listening to God.” We must seek God and find Him and when we call upon Him, he will come to us in our prayer time. Rev. Billy Jacks Senior Adult Pastor Jeremiah knew that the Lord wanted him to experience peace and not evil, and to give him confidence in an expected end of a hopeful future. In other words, God was concerned for Jeremiah‟s welfare, and to give him a future and a hope in well being. Inside this issue: “From Your Pastor’s Heart” 1 “Terry’s Thoughts” 2 Welcome New Members 2 “To The Point” (Youth) 3 “A Note About Our Senior Adults” 4 “Daycare News” 4 “Children’s Corner” 5 Zachariah Anani 5 July Calender 6 Current Events The familiar KJV states Jeremiah 29:11-13 as follows: Jeremiah 29:11-13 11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. I like the way the New American Standard Bible translate this passage of Scripture Jeremiah 29:11-13 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 11 7 &8 „For I know the plans that I have for you,‟ declares the LORD, „plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. When can we talk with God? Answer: We can talk with God anytime and anywhere. “11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ…” Ephesians 4:11-12 Page 2 The Valley Voice “Terry’s Thoughts” Rev. Terry Chitwood Worship and Admin Pastor This month I want to share a word with you about an unusual word from a familiar hymn. The word is “Ebenezer” This explanation comes from Nan Allen‟s book entitled, “The Words We Sing.” I quote from the book…, “Ask anybody on the street what the word Ebenezer means, and most will respond that it is the first name of a famous Charles Dickens character whose last name was Scrooge. It‟s too bad that the author of the hymn lyric “ Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” didn‟t give a tutorial on what the word means. It‟s found in the second verse of the hymn. Here I raise mine Ebenezer Hither by Thy help I’m come. And I hope by Thy good pleasure Safely to arrive at home. The term Ebenezer had its roots in the Old Testament. Samuel, the priest during the transitional time between the judges and the kings of Israel, named a place Ebenezer. While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with a loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.” Then in verse 12 and 13: Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mispah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far has the Lord helped us.” So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israelite territory again. The name Ebenezer literally meant “stone of help.” In the hymn it could mean a place to cry for help or a place to give thanks to God. Tommy Vowell Youth and Education Pastor “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the Law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.” -Psalm 78:4-7 TWO COMBINED INFLUENCES make a GREATER IMPACT than just two influences. What would happen if … ... churches started believing in the potential of the family to influence their own kids? … families started believing in the potential of the church to influence their sons and daughters? There are 8760 hours in a year… The average parent has 3000 hours in a given year to influence a life…The average church only has 40 hours in a given year to influence a life… The church and the home both exist because: (1) God initiated them (2) God desires to use them to demonstrate his plan of redemption and restoration (3) If they work together, they can potentially make a greater impact than if they work alone. THEY NEED EACH OTHER! Too much is at stake for either of them to fail! Their primary task is to build God’s kingdom in the hearts of men and women, sons and daughters! THIS IS ORANGE! IT’S COMING! SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 Page 4 The Valley Voice “A Note About Our Senior Adults” Rev. Billy Jacks Senior Adult Pastor We are known by man names. Grandma, papaw, Momma, Daddy, Grandpa, and Nana. Some refer to us as “senior citizens”. But we like to be called a member of an elite group of adults, Young At Heart. With the passing of even just one of us, we lose a “library” of information. We only require very little in this time of our lives….Love. Sure, we have all the answers, we have lived two or three times longer than most of you. We only wish that the teachings of those whom you admire become part of you, so that you may call upon them. Remember, those whose lives have touched you in some special way will always be a part of you, even if in some way the encounters were less than you would have wished. It is the content of the encounter that is more important than its form. May you not become too concerned with material matters, but instead place immeasurable value on the goodness and intent of our hearts. Our wish to each of you is to find time in each day to see beauty and love in the world around you. Realize that each person, yes even us, has limitless abilities, but each one of us is different in our own way. May you see your future as we once did, filled with promise and possibility. Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience. May you find enough inner strength to determine your own worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another‟s judgment of your own accomplishments. And lastly, may you always feel loved…...always! If , by chance, you are 50+, you are always welcome to come join us the third Tuesday of each month. Who knows, you might find it fun and grow to like us! Agape‟, YBIC, Billy “Daycare News” Gayle Dickerson Director Congratulations to sixteen children from our Pre-K class going to kindergarten this fall, we are proud of each one and wish a wonderful exciting school year for them. We are ready for our summer program field trips, Bible study and a whole lot of fun is expected for our children. We are looking forward to VBS this year, a new experience for all of us. I am sure the Lord has something good in store for us. We give God the praise and the glory in all we do. Pray for us each day that we may reach someone for His kingdom. In Christ Love, Ms. Gayle Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 5 “Children’s Corner” Pastor LeBron Durham Children’s Pastor Children‟s Ministry is alive and well. We have witnessed many children being baptized over these four short years, as a result of them having accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Thank you parents, grandparents and church for sharing the Gospel with children. God‟s Kingdom has grown as a result of your labor and God always rewards our faithfulness and dedicated to Him. Coming soon to a neighborhood near you, VBS 2011 “Takin‟ It To The Streets”. That‟s our theme for “Hometown Nazareth” where Jesus was a kid. Join us each Sunday in July in the fellowship hall immediately following the morning services. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. Children‟s Praise Team and Pee Wee Praise Team are kickin‟ it hard on Wednesday nights as they not only sing, but are learning music and flag routines as well. (That Pee Wee thing is kinda‟ cute huh?) Also, TeamKID is still going strong on Sunday nights, 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Plans are in the making for many good things to come. Please continue to pray hard daily for Children‟s Ministry and the ministry team. I work with some really special people. Ask God to supply us with His ideas. He knows what works and what don‟t, and He knows what He plans to do. We seek to join Him where He is and allow Him to work through us. We ask for His favor and blessing on Children‟s Ministry. Your brother and co-worker, LeBron “Zachariah Anani” Missionary August 14th AM Service Zachariah Anani was born in Beirut, Lebanon and was raised in a Muslim Home. His Grandfather and great grandfather were Muslim holy men. He joined the Lebanese militia when he was a young teenager and had his first kill shortly thereafter. He was saved through the ministry of a Southern Baptist missionary in Lebanon. Since that time, he has been a bold witness for Christ. Because of his strong stand, there have been many attempts made on his life. He has sixteen wounds on his body as a result. God has miraculously spared him! Zach has led many Muslims to faith in Christ, some have been martyred for their faith. Zach will share his testimony and tell about his work.
