STUCO members Cárter Kidd, Dakota Whitworth, Harley Sparkman, and Bailey
Hollabaugh show off the canned food and non-perishable items collected by students and
donated to the Salvation Army.
Food drive competition yields record
week, student council members
went around with shopping
carts during second hour.
Each grade had their own
shopping cart and had the
opportunity to donate. A can of
food or non-perishable item
was worth one point to the
class. The canned food drive
got very compelitive. An
unknown source bought about
$100 worth of Ramen Noodles
to get their class in the
running.

Just this past month, science
instruetor Tiffany Neill took
advantage of an opportunity to
attend and be a guest presenter
at the National Conference of
Geographical Educators.
The meeting was held in
Puerto Rico vvhere Neill
presented three lessons that had
natural ties to geography.
During her time in Puerto
Rico, Neill was offered a
chance to experience a number
of field trips to further her
classroom lesson ideas.
Neill took a zíp-line tour on
10 different lines, the last
being half a mile long over the
tree tops through the Rain
Forest.
Another field trip Neill
attended was a snuba diving
tour through coral reefs. Unlike
scuba diving, being certified is
not required. Another difference
was the oxygen tank location.
The oxygen lank was placed in
a raft above water wriile Neill
vvas 25-30 feet belovv.
Since that levei under water
vvas so great, Neill was able to
vievv sea coral in its true form,
undisturbed.
Out of the comer of her eyc,
during the snuba diving field
trip, she also saw an octopus.
Neill commenled that the
vievv vvas very vibram and full
of marine life.
In the middle of her trip,
Neill webcammed with her Sth
hour students ai Vinita High
School from the beach there to
talk about Puerto Rico.
During this, she had a teacher
consultam from National
Geographic talk to students.
This whole trip was
sponsored by the K20 center at
The University of Oklahoma.
"It was amazing to bc able lo
go to a different country and
have ali thesc different
experiences. It allowed me to
come back on the plane and
develop six lessons which
focus on lhe experiences I had
on my adventure," stated Neill.
Neill added thal National
Geographic was very interested
in the concepts she has
implemented in teaching
methods that allovv students to
experience real life applications
to learning, and learning to
combine different subjects,
such as English, social studies,
math and science into
geography lessons.
Above, Vinita High School science instruetor Tiffany Neill
ziplines over and through the Rain Forest during her recent
trip to Puerto Rico to make presentations on learning
methods at a National Geographic Conference. Below,
Neill vvebcams her fifth hour science class from the balcony
of her hotel to share a lesson on Puerto Rico. The trip was
sponsored by the University of Oklahoma's K20 Center.
