2012-2013 mPS alumni Donors - Mercyhurst Preparatory School
A Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of Mercy MissionStatement Mercyhurst Preparatory School is a four-year co-educational Catholic secondary school founded by the Sisters of Mercy to prepare students from all religious and ethnic backgrounds for a successful, productive, and compassionate life in an ever-changing and interdependent world. A Mercyhurst Prep education is based upon the teachings of Jesus Christ, the charism of Mercy, and a modeling of Judeo-Christian values. We strive for excellence in academic and co-curricular programs, we promote service to our local and global communities, and we foster the dedication and active support of the students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni of the Mercyhurst community. Unparalleled Preparation For Life A Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of Mercy From The President of Mercyhurst Preparatory School What an incredible honor to serve as president of my alma mater, the school that we ALL hold so dear! Mercyhurst Prep was an all girls’ school when I attended. Fortunately, it became co-ed in time for my three sons to receive the hallmark MPS education. Outside of my parents, the Sisters of Mercy have had THE most profound influence on me. Every facet of my personal and professional life is grounded in both the outstanding education I received at MPS as well as the Mercy charism – compassionate presence, justice, service, hospitality, and concern for the dignity of all persons. I am truly impressed with the level of alumni involvement at our Alma Mater. Whether it is volunteering for an event, helping in our cafeteria, using business tax credits to provide scholarships, providing in-kind gifts/services, or donating to the annual fund, our alumni are giving back to MPS in great ways. My own classmates were thrilled to establish the Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund on the occasion of our 40th Anniversary so a new generation of students can experience “unparalleled preparation for life” just as we did. With nearly 7,000 MPS alumni living and working across the USA and around the globe, we have much to be proud of. There simply are not enough words to thank those of you who continually support our ongoing mission at MPS. Mary Ellen Dahlkemper, MPS ‘69 President Unparalleled Preparation For Life A Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of Mercy From The Director of Advancement Hello MPS family, From a grateful student body and school, we present your Annual Report for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. To everyone who is listed within this publication we offer our most sincere thank you for your caring generosity and support. If you aren’t listed, perhaps you will see a fund or a cause or a classmate’s name that will inspire you to be listed in next year’s Annual Report! We are all blessed to be part of this wonderful Mercyhurst Prep community. From its earliest days as Mercyhurst Seminary when the all-girls school resided on the Mercyhurst College (now Mercyhurst University) campus, the compassionate presence, justice, service, hospitality and concern for the dignity of all persons that we know as the Mercy charism core values, have helped to offer students unparalleled preparation for life. Believe it or not, it has been 50 years since Mercyhurst Seminary became Mercyhurst Preparatory School, moving from the University campus up the hill to the current high school. Naturally, many things have changed. Fortunately some have not. Each day brings new evidence of how deeply connected Mercyhurst Prep alums, families and friends are to this school and to each other. On the following pages, you will see examples of how MPS family members have been inspired to help current and future Lakers by providing scholarships and other donations, many in honor or in memory of a classmate, friend and loved one. As the Mercy tradition continues into our 88th year, we welcome our new president Mary Ellen Dahlkemper, MPS ’69. We are also in the process of welcoming members of the MPS Class of 2018, (yes, 2018!), current 8th graders, who are spending days shadowing some of our wonderful current students. Believe me when I tell you that our future looks bright. On behalf of all Lakers, past, current and future, we again say THANK YOU for being part of this amazing MPS family. Sincerely, Lisa Zompa Nietupski, MPS Director of Advancement [email protected] 814-824-2408 • 814-969-3340 2012-2013 2012-2013 Summary of Giving Summary of Giving Special Events How your donations benefit MPS students Programs/Services not covered by tuition Cash for Christmas Technology Technology EITC, OSTC Scholarships/Financ al Aid Annual Fund Scholarships/Finanacial Aid Annual Fund/other donations EITC, OSTC tax credits Special Events Cash for Christmas TOTAL $956,922 $218,316 $82,340 $147,750 Programs/Services not covered by tuition Scholarships/Financial Aid Technology Programs/services not covered by tuition $1,405,328 $675,000 $450,000 $280,000 *approximate totals Board of Trustees 2012-2013 Sr. Mary Ann Bader, RSM, ex-officio Rev. The Bill and Audrey Hirt Education and Technology Initiative kicked off in the 2012-2013 school year with iPads for each student and faculty member. This provides a tremendous blending of state-of-theart classroom technology with best educational practice. MPS campus ministry Campus Ministry at Mercyhurst Preparatory School seeks to express in a myriad of ways the Gospel message of love and service. Inspired by the charism of our foundress, Catherine McAuley, and our sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy, Mercyhurst Prep gives the highest priority to a Campus Ministry program which fosters reverent, faith-filled worship, community building, and an orientation to justice and compassionate service. Mercyhurst Prep students are encouraged to assist the CM adult team by participating in the planning and carrying out of all Campus Ministry programs and activities. Students in Intro to Modern Engineering class designed and constructed model chairs as a class project. MPS faculty receives extensive on-going training in the use of this wonderful educational tool. They and the students are supported by a full-time technology expert and coach. The iPads are being integrated into every aspect of the curriculum. Principal Mrs. Deborah Laughlin says the iPads help to deliver that cutting-edge advantage. “Schools are now tasked with preparing students for newly invented jobs and even those that have not yet been created; they need to develop in collaboration, problem solving, analysis and synthesis, comfort with the proper use of technology and creativity.” These 21st century skills along with the development of superior verbal and written communication are well integrated in the Mercyhurst Prep curriculum. Campus Ministry invites the MPS community to share in: Liturgical celebrations • Prayer • Seasonal devotions for Advent and Lent • Fundraising for charity • Dances, picnics, and other celebrations of community • Retreats • Balloon ministry • Volunteer service programs • Mission trips Mercyhurst Preparatory School • Erie’s ONLY co-educational Catholic high school • Northwest Pennsylvania’s International Baccalaureate World School – one of only 12 Catholic High Schools in the US offering the IB Diploma Programme • Offers OUTSTANDING faith development, academics, arts and sports programs, including the regions ONLY internationally competitive high school crew team • Offers the opportunity to complete senior year at MPS simultaneously with freshman year at the adjacent Mercyhurst University • Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1926 • MPS graduates currently attend top Universities and Colleges, including: Notre Dame, Cornell, Brown, Georgetown, Case Western, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, M.I.T., U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College, Purdue, University of Pennsylvania, Michigan State, R.I.T., and Villanova • Class of 2013 was collectively offered more than $12 million in college scholarships • Class of 2013 contributed more than 30,000 hours of community service • Beautiful 7.25 acre campus overlooking Lake Erie Unparalleled Preparation For Life International Baccalaureate (IB) Mercyhurst Prep is Northwestern Pennsylvania’s Only International Baccalaureate (IB) World School! What is IB? • The International Baccalaureate World Programme at MPS is a curriculum of challenging classes that lead to IB certificates and for those who commit to a complete IB curriculum - a coveted IB Diploma and MPS diploma. • IB is a broad series of 6 subjects: 2 languages, history, math, science, and the arts. • A culminating course called Theory of Knowledge, promotes and guides reflection and synthesis of thought generated in the various academic disciplines. • IB includes creativity, action and service (CAS) work. • IB prepares students to do university work. • IB gives students an edge in the university acceptance process. • Many IB students receive college credits and even college tuition reduction! • The IB curriculum is designed so that mobile students can study a similar curriculum throughout the world and have transferrable credentials. Many countries, provinces and states do not recognize local high school diplomas. • IB students learn to do independent research. • IB students are bilingual, thus able to converse in another language besides their native tongue. • Students research and write a 4000 word essay. • Students may live in multiple countries during their lifetimes and IB prepares them for an international perspective. Why choose a school with the IB ProgramMe? • IB moves the student away from memorizing by teaching analysis, inquiry, logic, responsibility and morality. • The average acceptance rate of IB diploma students into university/college is 22 percentage points higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population. For more information contact: Kathryn Donovan, International Baccalaureate Coordinator at 814-824-3127 or www.ibo.org Why choose the IB program? Admissions Dean: “The rigor of IB Diploma requirements meets our recommendation for the strongest high school preparation possible….In sum, the IB diploma candidate who has met the challenge successfully receives strong consideration from the William & Mary admission committee.” Allison Jesse, former Associate Dean of Admissions, William and Mary College Educator: “The IB Diploma Program is the finest curriculum available to high school students in the last two years of high school in the world. It is recognized by national governments, provincial governments and by states.” Robin Calitri, former principal at Southside High School in Rockville Center, NY, one of the first IB schools in the U.S. Alumna: “Thank you for being such great teachers! I received 20 college credits for my “fives” in humanities, Spanish, and history. I actually received credit for a history course, an English course, and Spanish 1, 2, and 3. DePaul University also recognized my hard work in pursuing the IB curriculum by awarding me half tuition. Your class lectures/instruction prepared me for these tests. Thank you again!” Andrea Boris, Mercyhurst Prep class of 2013 Currently attending DePaul University Alumnus: “The IB Program has prepared me more than I ever thought was possible. I have realized while being here at college that I have learned a lot of this ‘higher level’ material before, while others are struggling with the concepts. If you would like to be the Plato, Einstein, or Thoreau of our day, then your first step is to come to MPS and take the thoughtprovoking classes that will initiate your intellectual development into high level analysts and thinkers. It is, quite simply, the way to success. Many schools say this, but MPS is without a doubt the best preparatory institution around. It is the school at the pinnacle on a chart comparing world-class institutions.” Mitch McBride, Mercyhurst Prep class of 2013 Currently attending Bucknell University Current Student: “I decided to follow the IB route of the curriculum and obtain certificates because IB covers many topics and encourages critical thinking that would allow me to really stretch my mind. Because of its international aspect, IB allows me to see the world with a culturally-aware mindset. IB will also prepare me to handle the rigors of a college workload.” Clare Weisenfluh, Mercyhurst Prep class of 2015 Our sincerest thanks to our generous supporters who donated to Mecyhurst Prep from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credits (OSTC) allow you to take state business taxes you are required to send to Harrisburg and redirect the funds to MPS to provide scholarships to deserving students. In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, tax credit donations to MPS funded seven full scholarships and dozens of partial scholarships. As part of the program, many of those scholarships allow students who would otherwise have to attend a state declared “underachieving school” to instead receive an outstanding and potentially life changing Mercy education at MPS. Tax credits of up to 90% are available! These donations make a tremendous impact on students’ lives. For more information on how PA tax credit programs can allow your business to make a scholarship donation for as little as 10 cents on the dollar, please contact the MPS Advancement office at 814-824-2408 or [email protected]. 2013 will be listed in the 2013-2014 Annual Report Advocate Program An advocate is someone who acts or intercedes on behalf of another. Can you advocate for a Mercyhurst Prep student who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend MPS? You can do this by becoming part of the Advocate Program and assisting with their tuition. You can be an Advocate for a single year or for all 4 years of a student’s education. We ask that you commit to a minimum of $1,000 per student per year. You and the student(s) for whom you advocate may remain anonymous to each other if you choose, or be known to each other so that they may acknowledge your generosity. You may also choose to be kept up to date on their grades. As an Advocate, you will have a direct role in changing someone’s life for the better, by making an outstanding Mercy education possible. Think of the impact that Mercyhurst Prep or Mercyhurst Seminary had on you and your loved ones. What a wonderful way to pass it on. For more information about the Advocate Program, please contact Lisa Nietupski at 824-2408 or [email protected] Contributor: Anonymous 2012-2013 MPS Alumni Donors A Different Kind of Social Network There are so many new ways for old friends to get together. Technology Endowment - a second challenge is on! When Mercyhurst Seminary alumna Louise Courtelis heard that there was a dollar for dollar match being offered to raise funds for the MPS Technology Endowment – she said YES in a big way! First a bit of recent history: It all started in 2012 with an incredible $500,000 donation from MPS Alumna Betsy Vorsheck ’73 and her husband Bill, which established the Bill & Audrey Hirt Education and Technology Initiative in memory of Betsy’s parents. The initiative provided iPads for each MPS student and faculty member as well as intensive training in the best use of the cutting edge classroom technology. The Vorshecks generously donated an additional $250,000 to match donations to a technology endowment being built to sustain current and evolving future technology needs. Thanks to the generosity of donors: • Scott Griebel ‘90 • Don & Susan Baxter • Ed & Christine Dahlkemper • Kathleen & James Dammeyer • Carol & Mike Geiger • William Hilbert, Jr. …more than $100,000 was raised and matched. That’s when Mrs. Courtelis, Mercyhurst Seminary class of ’50, and her daughter Kiki blessed Mercyhurst Prep by donating $400,000, fulfilling the Vorshecks Technology Endowment match and then offering a $250,000 match of their own. So here is your new challenge: All funds you donate to the technology endowment and fund will be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000! Thank you to Mercyhurst Prep and Mercyhurst Seminary Alums and MPS families for contributing to the Technology Endowment and Fund and for your positive impact on our students’ education! For more information about the match offer and the Technology Endowment/Fund – please contact Lisa Nietupski at [email protected] or 814-824-2408. How are MPS students using iPads in the classroom? • For their International Baccalaureate Humanities exam, 2 students utilized their iPads to analyze and finish Chaucer’s unfinished Canterbury Tales, presenting it in the style of Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis. • Students in Mr. Burt’s physics class used their iPads to record themselves throwing a ball and used the Ubersense app to help determine the angle of the trajectory and the velocity of a projectile. • Mrs. Comstock’s French and Spanish classes record some of their oral reports at home and turn them in electronically. This leaves the teacher able to send back corrections that the students can replay as often as needed. It also leaves more time for teaching and learning in the classroom. These are just a few examples of the innovative technology applications seen daily in our classrooms. Opportunities for you to help provide MPS students with Unparalleled Preparation for Life Annual Appeal for the Mercyhurst Prep Fund: This is one of the best ways you can help. The MP fund is a major source of scholarships and financial aid for deserving MPS students. It also helps to cover the cost of student programs and services. Technology Fund/Endowment: These funds help to ensure that each current and future Laker has access to the cutting edge classroom technology they need. * Donations to this fund are currently being matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000 by a generous alumna! Dollars for Scholars: All donations to this fund go directly to MPS scholarships. Advocate: This is an opportunity to sponsor a student for one, two, three or all four of their years at MPS. There is a $1,000 per year minimum commitment. EITC and OSTC Tax Credits: These are wonderful “win-win” opportunities for PA businesses and MPS! Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs allow you to re-direct PA state tax dollars and designate the funds for MPS scholarships for pennies on the dollar. Planned Gifts: These creative gift giving opportunities help to secure the school’s future. Many do not include an outright gift today, but instead, a promise of a gift in the future by naming MPS in your will or through an insurance policy. Matching Gifts: Please check to see if your employer matches donations. Their generosity adds to yours doubling the benefit to MPS students! Specific Scholarships: You can add to an established scholarship or create one in honor of, or in memory of a particular individual, family, graduating class, or cause. Benefactors Honored Even with very busy professional lives this Erie couple always finds time to help their children’s alma mater. The Honorable Susan Paradise Baxter and Rev. Dr. Donald Baxter, Jr. are this year’s recipients of the Laker Legends Philanthropy Award, which was presented at the 2013 Laker Legends Scholarship Gala. The Baxters are Marked by Pride & Spirit as proud parents of MPS graduates Emily ‘07 and Eddie ‘11. While their children attended MPS, the Baxters generously helped in many ways but were especially active in their support of the arts. Susan and Don both served as theater boosters, filling roles as needed from working with costumes and manning the concession stands to helping build sets. Susan, a federal magistrate judge for the western district of Pennsylvania, served 2 years as booster club president. With Eddie and Emily well on their way to successful higher education and careers, the Baxters’ support of the school continues and in many ways has increased. Both have helped to host MPS open houses answering questions of potential new MPS families. Susan has served as a guest speaker relating her very positive experiences and helping to encourage parents to consider an outstanding MPS education for their children. Don, a minister at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church who also has a thriving dermatology practice, is a member of the MPS board of trustees. He serves as chairman of the advancement committee and chairs the campaign to build the MPS technology endowment. MPS is grateful to the Baxters for their generosity in support of fundraising efforts including the technology endowment, as well as their generous gifts of their time and talents. Thank you Susan and Don for allowing your pride and spirit to help current and future Lakers receive the unparalleled preparation for life offered at Mercyhurst Prep. You truly are Laker Legends!
