Mission Viejo High School Saddleback Valley Unified School District Volume 24, Issue 1 MISSION VIEJO HIGH SCHOOL June 2016 Inside this issue: Diablos Excellence Awards Heart of the Diablos Guidance Announcements Performing Arts Spring Sports AVID Class of 2016 FFA ROP Distinguished Awards ROP Student of the Month For Your Information PTSO Board & Officers Summer Office Hours Dates to Remember Message from the Principal On June 16th, we said farewell to approximately 570 Mission Viejo High School seniors. This year’s graduating class will be remembered for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and in the co-curricular realm. On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration at MVHS, I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our graduates the very best of luck in the future as they take on the challenges of the next phase of their lives. Over the last several years, Mission Viejo High School has been fortunate to be recognized nationally for academic excellence, this year was no exception. In May, we received confirmation that MVHS was once again ranked as one of the top high schools in the state and in the country by both U.S. World News and World Report and the Washington Post. Both honors are a true tribute to the quality and hard work of the faculty, staff, students and parents of this remarkable high school! I would like to take a moment to highlight just some of MVHS’ successes for this spring. From an academic perspective, we graduated 50 International Baccalaureate (IB) Full Diploma Candidates. There were approximately 1200 combined AP and IB tests administered this past spring, which is amazing in that even as our student enrollment declines we continue to maintain our extensive enrollment in AP and IB courses. Our seniors garnered in excess of $5.6 million in college scholarships this year. Congratulations to our 2016 MVHS Graduates The arts had another banner year with recognition for Best Musical, Best Ensemble, Best Choreography and Best Orchestra for Sweet Charity. Many individual drama students were recognized by a host of theater organizations (i.e. JRAYS, Cappies, Macys and the National Youth Theater Awards) for such awards as Best Actor, Best Dancer, Best Actress in a Musical and many more. The choir received superior ratings at several competitions. The instrumental music program continues to be the class in South Orange County. Our athletic teams and athletes were unstoppable this spring. The girls’ 1 Principal’s Message Continued— NE WS LE T T E R track team were the CIF champions with several athletes (girls and boys) competing at the masters and state levels. Our nationally recognized softball team won the CIF championship once again. It is worth noting that in the last 3 years, our softball team has been the CIF champions twice and the CIF runner up once. Congratulations to all of our incredible students, we are so very proud of you and the legacy you have left behind! Retirements and Fond Farewells As the school year comes to an end, it is time once again to recognize some of our long time faculty members who retired at the conclusion of this school year. Mr. Phil Koger has been one of the pillars of our social science department and the International Baccalaureate Program for the past 37 years. Mr. Koger will be missed by many for his expertise in AP European History, IB History of the Americas and IB Psychology. Long time science instructor, Mr. Orrin Walker has retired. Orrin is well known for his success in expanding the school’s Marine Biology program and for the wonderful Catalina excursions that he coordinated to enhance the science curriculum each year. Mr. Walker was also a wrestling coach and an athletic director during his tenure at MVHS. Mrs. Jan Tattam has taught English for the last several years and was a club advisor. She primarily worked with our 11th and 12th grade students. Also, Mr. Mark Moore retired from the math department. He taught courses such as IB math and statistics. Mr. Moore was instrumental in preparing many IB students for rigorous IB examinations. Finally, Mr. Darryll Ruffolo has decided to leave MVHS after 12 years to explore new opportunities. Mr. Ruffolo played a major role in the school’s Ag Sciences program. We will miss all of these valuable teachers. They have all left an indelible mark on our school and on the lives of the students they have taught. In closing, as we come to the end of another successful school year, I want to take a moment to thank the many parents and boosters who took so much time from their busy schedules to support our many programs. Mission Viejo High School could not be the special place it is for our students without your continued support and generosity. Have a safe and relaxing summer. Dr. Ray A. Gatfield Principal MVHS Alumna- Brianna Keiler We were honored to welcome back Brianna Keilar, a Mission graduate from 1998. She is the senior political correspondent and fill-in anchor for CNN in the Washington, D.C. bureau. Brianna is currently assigned to the Bernie Sanders campaign. She was visiting Mr. Harnack’s Video/TV Production class and studio sharing her knowledge and experiences. Tradition Never Graduates! 2 NE WS LE T T E R News and Notes from The Principal’s Office... 10 Mission Viejo High School students were honored this year at the Orange County High School Photography Invitational Juried Exhibition. Best in show, Russell Schnieders, "Stogies"; top 10, Jacob Seffaty, "Good & Evil"; projects of merit, Jon Chenier, Frank Helmstetter, Mariah Krohngold; honorable mention, Adam Arnott, "Surf," Matt Ferrer, "Tears," Madison Hahn, "Beauty Beyond Measure," "PCH," Emily Kind, "Gloomy," Ann Nopper, "Lilly Pad". Congratulations! On May 16 at UCI, the Orange County chapter of the American Chemical Society honored the following students for finishing in 6th place in the county: Benjamin Pang, Thomas Stubbs, Daniel Zoleikhaeian, Eric Tangeman, and Samantha Whalen. MVHS placed in the top 6 from over 50 Orange County high schools on the first year ACS exam. Top honors went to Thomas Stubbs. Also honored as the top student from MVHS on the Chemistry Olympiad (2nd year) exam was Sarth Shah. Congratulations Diablos! Hunter Keneley was recently named to the National Sporting Clays Association Krieghoff All-American Team. The status of All-American is bestowed on as few as 210 of 28,000 competitors. Only 60 individuals of school age were names as All-Americans. Achieving this honor requires considerable personal commitment to a specific goal, many hours of practice, and exceptional skill. Congratulations Hunter for this achievement! The Diablo Freshman/Sophomore Academic Decathlon team was honored for their fifth place finish in the Orange County Competition held on May 21st. Additionally, the team placed fifth in the Super Quiz and won 13 individual awards. This year’s outstanding students were Baxter Bartlett, Adnan Maksoud, Bob Huo, Valia Oliva, Michael Delmont, Annie DiGuiseppe, Adele Soonthornyanakij, and Nathan Persinger. Team two members were Adam Thaher, Cynthia Leong, Nghi Nguyen, Ashley Rende, Lauren Dillon and Hailey Johnston. Congratulations decathletes and one more final OCAD congratulations to Mr. Phil Koger for his decades of advising, training and supporting the MVHS OCAD teams! Washington Post recognized MVHS as one of the top high schools in the nation as part of their annual search for “America’s Most Challenging High Schools”. 2400 high schools in California were eligible to receive a ranking and MVHS was ranked #176 and ranked #1405 out of some 28,561 high schools in the nation. Four of Mission’s finest teachers retired this year. Mr. Koger, Social Science teacher, taught 37 years at Mission. Mrs. Tattam has been a English teacher at Mission for 20 years. Mr. Walker taught Science for 18 years at Mission and Mr. Moore, Math teacher, taught at 17 years at Mission. Congratulations on your retirement and we will greatly miss all of you! This spring marked the tenth annual Marine Biology Field Study Program to Toyon Bay, Catalina Island. In year one, 28 students enjoyed three days of studies in Catalina; this year, 130 students attended the science camp. Two day snorkels, a night snorkel, eight labs and even a multi-story rock wall gave Mission students the opportunity to be engaged in Marine Biology studies. Investigations into island and marine ecology, as well as marine science, brought science to life through observation, experimentation, and hands-on activities. The Diablo Academic Decathlon team was commended for its ninth place finish in the Orange County competition. The teams won a total of 46 medals. Team one was comprised of Yu Heng Cheng, Sarth Shah, Remo Abboud, Erin Clem, Miles Salunga, Quinn Hansen, Matt Palmer, Greyson Spann and Ronald Self. Additionally, Adrian Arteaga won 7 first place awards in division four. Congratulations Academic Decathlon team for a solid season! 3 NE WS LE T T E R MVHS Diablo Excellence Awards Auxiliary Program Hanyeh Afshar Cesar Alfaro Science Leen Azmeh Alexa Cadena Bianca Beach Dylan Birtch Lance Borden Estee Goiea Ariana Green Anna Grulikowski Kalynn Harris Elizabeth Johnson Eric Campoy Vannesa Espriu Bustos Tyla Gariepy Andrew Glover Isabelle Johnson Zoe Kim Shelby Laitipaya Mason Malloy Jemner GomezPerez William Hagerman Keely Himes Kaelin Howeth Aubrey Mills Amanda Mitchell Benjamin Pang Chase Parker Brittany Kresch Maynor Marquez Nicholas Masuda Michael McDaniel Jacob Perisho Brianne Shannon Thomas Stubbs Eric Tangeman Dulce Munoz Salas Steven MunozDurand Joseph Nava Jared Neilson Samantha Whalen Daniel Zoleikhaeian Stephanie Ocampo Maria Ordonez Paula Orzco Marisa Rigel Katherine Robinson Tyler Rosecrans Teresa Rowan Gabriel Sanchez Roselyn Trinh Leonard Nathen Woodard Social Science English Jeffrey Abbott Blake Abel Elena Aquilanti Keemia Beizai Brian Clem Alaythia Dervartanian Kylee Erwin Kayla Henoud Genna HewettAbbott Sherri Hufstedler Zoe Kim Cassidy Krucli Shelby Laitipaya Alexandra Murg Riley Ohman Jonathan Oshinsky Benjamin Pang Ryan Shields Keiana Snell Samantha Whalen Leadership Anna Kaylor Monserrat Alvizo Elena Aquilanti Samantha Ball Sabba Beizai Mina Bigdeli Luis Cespedes Yu Heng Cheng Spencer Churchill Katelyn Colwell Kaelin Davis Francesca de Boisblanc Lauren Dillon Cara Drake Emma Hicken Yilin Huo Hannah Jackson Sophia James Eric Jeffcoat John Jezek Muhammad Karkoutli Suleiman Karkoutifi Shelby Laitipaya Kelly Lundberg Alexander Maitland Mason Malloy Jackson Maxwell Emily Miller Amanda Mitchell Gregory Morris Tyler Rende Hannah Ritner Sarth Shah Ryan Shields Brett Machock Samuel Siwy Eric Tangeman Technical Education Mathematics Christina Boyd Christina Boyd Simon Bratt Luis Cespedes Yu Heng Cheng Kevin Coulson Kylie Deer Anneliese Kyra Eulo Jessica Ferreira Sandy Gearges Bryan Ho Yilin Huo Emily Jystad Alex Kim Shelby Laitipaya Stephen Landaas Gariel Levy Pranav Menon Makenna Meyers Mihir Nilkanth Benjamin Pang Daniel Pettinger Braden Russell Ryan Shields Ruben Sosa Nicole Strickler Thomas Stubbs David Suzuki Eric Tangeman Kennedy Noah Usman Samantha Whalen Gordon Wong Sarah Yraceburu Ruslana Yurtyn Daniel Kai Gruener Jacob Hicken Visual Arts Sarah Amundsen Jon Chenier Marcela Espejel Christina Genin Sawyer Genoway Emily Ho Mariah Krohngold Javier Trujillo World Language Performing Arts Elena Aquilanti Dean Balagot Jack Bloom Chad Carter Luis Cespedes Margarita CruzFuentes Grace Davidson Caitlin Dinh Keyler Fulton Alyssa Haynes Molly Heald Zoe Kim Sophia Klueter Edgar Lopez Ocegueda Tanner Maclean Emily McGann Kaitlyn Menichetti Makenna Meyers Alexis Mirabal Nicole Muertter Jordan Odekirk Kate Petit Bushra Rajput Jonathan Rosales Baxter Bartlett Blake Bradley Mary Desmond Tristan Estrella Forseth Alexander Golden Elizabeth Johnson Shain Kinnie Jonathan Ku Brayan Sagastume Aquino Katherine Shears Ryan Shields Alexandra Ulans Jared Pugh Samantha Ray Hunter Wetzel Alicia Xie Noah Usman Joanna Villalobos Samantha Whalen Daniel Zoleikhaeian Physical Education Cara Drake Jasmine Galang Iliana Goodhew Annebelle Olminkhoff Scott Phan Phoebe Weimholt Congratulations to all of the award recipients!
