HARD ROCK CAFE
THE ROMANTICS September 810; 11:30pm
FREE
Biloxi, MSThe Hard Rock Cafe,
located in the Hard Rock Hotel, fea
tures live national recording acts.
The Romantics will join the cafe for
the Grand Opening for three free
shows on September 8,
9, and 10. Showtime's
for the three nights is
11:30 PM. The show is
opening to all
ages.
The
Romantics, a
bunch of hard
working
street kids from the East
side of Detroit who became
one of the most influential
and memorable bands emanating
from one of music's most important periods....
Formed on Valentine's Day, 1977, Wally
Palmar, Jimmy Marinos, Mike Skill and Rich
Cole the original Romantics were tough kids
escaping hard work, probably in machine shops
or factories, but they weren't punks. They were a
response to the nihilism of the U.K. punks.
And The Romantics were simple; the best of
their music was a joyful affirmation, epito
mized by the chanted "Hey!...uhhuh!" intro to
the remarkable "That's What I Like About
You," a song that still exists precisely in the
moment, without before or after.
While it is true that they took much of their
simple thunder from the British Invasion, the
band's primary influence was the high energy
excitement of the late 60s Detroit scene. The
MC5, the Stooges, The Underdogs, The
Rationals, SRC, The Up. . . The Romantics
took the essence of this scene sincerity, irony,
spontaneity, volume and translated it to suit
their own modern experience. Their image was
innate; they naturally favored short hair and
shorter songs and happened on the infamous
red leather suits by chance.
The late 70s U.K. punk movement is diluted
and misunderstood in America, and The
Romantics are, like it or not, labeled "New Wave,
" a term for the more palatable selling of punk. The
Romantics consider themselves well removed
from the Sex Pistols' negativity. They don't want
rock to go away; they want, as Skill tells a reporter
in 1979: "to still have fun with three chords."
After signing with Nemperor Records in
1979, The Romantics released their debut LP,
recorded in three weeks. Anchored by "That's
What I Like About You," "When I Look In Your

Eyes" and a cover of Ray
Davies'
"She's
Got
Everything," The album is an
exemplary poprock period piece.
Distilling the frantic melodies of the
Dave Clark Five and the exigency of the
punks, The Romantics evokes a youthful por
trait, haunting in its innocence, a direct contrast
to the tough world they know in Detroit.
The band reaches its commercial peak in
19831984 with In Heat, a platinum album bear
ing two top ten singles: "Talking In Your Sleep"
and "One In A Million." This should have been
the big payoff, but drummer Marinos departs
instead as "success" creates division and con
frontation between management and the band.
The foursome returned with "61/49,"its most
rock solid offering in years. Named for the sto
ried crossroads near Clarksdale, Mississippi
where bluesman Robert Johnson made his pact
with the devil, "61/49" is intended as a tip of
the hat to the roots of rock 'n' roll and the nucle
us of the Romantics' fervent pop.
Mixed and Engineered by local heavy
weights Steve King (Eminem) and Al Sutton
(Kid Rock), "61/49" exemplifies the hook
laden, explosive pop that has made the
Romantics among the most memorable rock
purveyors of all time. The album's opening
track, "Devil in Me," exudes the sexy swagger
that is the hallmark of the band's sound while
its first single, "Out of My Mind (Into My
Head)" showcases Palmar's ruggedly charis
matic voice and flare for melody.
As they all want to do, record companies are
currently scouring the globe for mopheaded
cuties that can peddle the new "garage." Fact is,
REAL rock 'n' roll can't be bought and sold like
an offtherack imitation. REAL rock 'n' roll is
a tangible manifestation of heart, soul and com
mitment. The Romantics are as real as it gets.

SEPTEMBER 2005 Coast Nightlife Observer www.coastnightlifeobserver.com
Biloxi, MSThe Beau Rivage Theatre trans
forms as Beau Rivage’s sizzling new produc
tion show takes center stage through Nov. 20.
KRASNAYA, Russian for beautiful, is chore
ographed by Alla Duhova, Russia’s top cho
reographer, and features dancers from the
country’s top dance company Todes.
“KRASNAYA centers around dance with
amazing acts of athleticism entwined to keep
audiences on the edge of their seats,” said
Terry Burden, vice president of entertainment
at Beau Rivage and the show’s coproducer.
The 85minute production features a cast of
42 Russian performers. “Alla Duchova is the
most respected and soughtafter choreogra
pher in Russia, and this show is a testament
to her amazing talent and eye for perfection.”
Duhova, recently named top business
woman of the year by Russian Prime
Minister Putin, operates 25 dance schools
and studios throughout Russia, Latvia, the
Ukraine, and other former countries for
merly part of the Soviet Union. One
American dance aficionado describes her as
“today’s Russian answer to Bob Fosse.”
Galina Kubrak, president of Tarragon West
Entertainment, says it has been many years
since a Russian dance company has burst on
the scene with the excitement of a Moiseyev
or the Bolshoi, and with the modern “cutting
edge” style and choreography of Duhova, it
is a must see experience. “Her work results in
spectacular performances with Rockette pre
cision and racetrack speed,” said Kubrak.
“Plans are underway for a U.S. national tour
of this superb Todes group, with performanc
es in major theaters throughout the country
beginning next fall.”
KRASNAYA is a unique blend of this
unequalled dance company and the best of
the world famous Russian Circus. The acts,
handpicked by Burden, include the
“Sphere,” a breathtaking aerial display of
precision balance and daring moves per
formed by Anastasia Vasilenko inside and
outside of a transparent sphere suspended
high over the Beau Rivage stage. “Thorn” is
a masterful performance of four petite
Russian beauties, offering gravity defying
balance on an apparatus that may resemble
the “jacks” you picked up as a child.
Samoylova, Yulia Tsepova, Zhanna Aminova
and Aleksandra Mikhaylova capture your full
attention as they weave their way in and out
of beautiful and sometime dangerous balanc
ing feats. And if it’s a little spice you fancy,
you’ll love the “Aquarium” and the magical
underwater performance of Margarita
Khasanova.
Finally, witness some of the fastest, high
est and most astounding acrobatics per
formed at breakneck speed by the Mayorov
Troupe. Headed by worldrenowned gym
nast/acrobat Igor Mayorov, nine of Russia’s
top acrobatic athletes and one powerful girl

Biloxi, MSHard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi, the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s newest
$235 million resort, is now taking hotel reservations. The casino resort opens in
September and is one of the region’s most highly anticipated destination resort open
ings this year.
Hard Rock Biloxi is located on the Gulf of Mexico in the heart of Biloxi with direct
access from Interstate 10. Due to the strong positive reaction of the coming of this par
ticular property by the public, it is advisable that guests with preferred dates reserve
now by calling 1877URROCKN, or by logging on to www.hardrockbiloxi.com.
Each of the 318 guest rooms and suites in the striking 12story, purple and white
hotel tower is artisticallydesigned bringing a new level of accommodations to the
Mississippi Gulf Coast. Of the 24 suites in the hotel, all have views overlooking the
Gulf of Mexico or the “happening” Hard Rock pool deck. Standard rooms are equipped
with high tech comforts such as 42” plasma screen televisions, touch screen phones,
Bose CD Music Systems, High Speed Internet (wireless) and inroom safes. Additional
amenities include Aveda bath products and inroom honor bars. Bathrooms boast three
showerheads per shower and granite countertops with partial walls between the bath
and bedroom. Bedding is elegantcool with an allwhite posh duvet cover tucked
beneath a sixfoottall, deeppurple headboard.
“Staying at Hard Rock Hotel Biloxi should be a definite item to check off on your
“must do” list. The rooms are so unique from anything else on the Coast, said Hard
Rock Biloxi’s VP of Hotel Operations, Roger Kuehn. “And, not only will hotel guests
be able to see music memorabilia throughout the casino, but they will be able to view
unique pieces on each of the 12 floors of the hotel as well.”
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi is owned and operated by Premier Entertainment
Biloxi, LLC, d/b/a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Biloxi. The $235 million project,
scheduled to open in September 2005, will include a Hard Rock casino with 1,500 coin
less slot machines, 50 table games, a poker room, a fullservice spa, salon and fitness
center, a 12story hotel with 318 rooms and suites, a unique beach pool, five restaurants
including Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Hard Rock Café, Hard Rock Live®, a 1,500

“We want to celebrate the swinging 40’s with a USO
themed event and have a whole lot of fun…and it’s a great excuse to give away a bunch
of cash to over two dozen of our players too!” said Treasure Bay Marketing Director
Stacey McKay.
Entering is easy: For every 600 points earned in slot play from Sept. 117, Treasure
Seekers members earn one entry into the 8 p.m. Saturday event in Scalawag’s Showbar,
located adjacent to Nemo’s restaurant on the second level of the Treasure Bay Casino.
Just like the USO dances of yesteryear, ten lucky winners will be drawn to pick their
swinging dance partner to reveal their share of $15,000 in cash. Ten additional wildcard
winners of $500 each will be drawn from all nonwinning entries for the Jump ‘N’ Jive
Cash Giveaway for a total of $20,000 in prize money and 25 winners.
“This brings added value to our Treasure Seekers players club card” said McKay. “In
September, you can earn our Gift of the Month, receive entries into our monthly give
away, earn entries for this event and get daily cash back with double points for everyone
on Tuesday’s! It’s why we believe that our players club offers the very best for players
every day, every week and every month”.

Music Memorabilia
Installation Wraps Up At
Biloxi, MS It all started when Eric Clapton, a reg
ular at the first Hard Rock Cafe in London, asked the staff if
he could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favorite bar
stool as "his spot." They did, and one week later, a package from
the Who's Pete Townsend arrived by messenger with a guitar and a
note bearing the message, "Mine's as good as his! Love, Pete." Ever
since then, Hard Rock International has been gathering historic, cool,
unforgettable pieces of rock memorabilia and covering their walls with them. Hard Rock Hotel &
Casino Biloxi is no different.
From the moment guests walk through the guitarhandled front doors, a massive twostory mem
orabilia display wall will greet them including several famous guitars, plus celebrity pants, shirts,
awards, miscellaneous instruments, posters, photos and more.
“It will be a very impactful display for our guests,” said Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi
President Joe Billhimer.
Famous artist memorabilia, called
“memo” for short is abundant throughout the
property. There will be everything from
Cher’s pantsuit and Madonna’s bustier to
Steven Tyler’s mike stand covered in scarves
and a wardrobe display from all five Velvet
Revolver band members. If today’s rock is
not for you, how about Johnny Cash’s guitar
and “Man in Black” suit?
“Selecting memorabilia from Hard Rock
International’s Warehouse in Orlando,
Florida was a fun experience,” said
Billhimer. “We had to make sure we got the
right mix of genres and decades to suit all
demographics and tastes. We want each
Hard Rock Biloxi guest to feel like there is
something they can identify with. There is
something for everyone whether a local or
tourist, young or slightly more mature.”
One place that is sure to be a hot spot is
the casino’s Center Bar, located in the center
of the casino floor on an elevated platform.
Besides being the place to people watch, it
will display impressive sculptural guitar
trees with guitars from bands like John S.
(Marilyn Manson), Elliot Easton (The Cars),
Blues Traveler, Metallica, Motely Crue,
Depeche Mode and others.
“It’s amazing as to the amount of memorabilia that Hard Rock International owns and we are
fortunate to have some of what I believe are the best pieces,” said Billhimer.
Memorabilia will abound everywhere you look. There is a very high profile B.B. King guitar
with oneofakind album artwork. There is a Rolling Stones series of lithographs and Charlie Watts
outfit. Miscellaneous guitars throughout the interior include guitars from bands like The Eagles,
Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton and Cheap Trick.
Part project owner and former member of rock group, Giuffria, Gregg Giuffria, is also included in a
tribute to 1980’s heavy metal bands just outside Level12 in the hotel. The tribute wall display will include
guitars, stage outfits displayed on mannequins, posters and photos. Hard Rock Live will also house a
permanent cymbal display that can be autographed and returned to the display as bands play the venue.

Biloxi, MSThe last thing I thought the
coast would welcome is another chain
seafood restaurant. But, Oh My God, this
place is PHENOMENAL!!!! Just like their
sister company, The Outback, has wowed us
with fresh cut high quality steaks, consis
tency, and quality, Bonefish Grill also spe
cializes in only the freshest caught and
flownindaily fish along with the same con
sistency and high quality. All of their fish is
seasoned and cooked over a wood burning
grill and served with your choice of four dif
ferent sauces, Lemon Butter, Lime Tomato
Garlic, Warm Mango Salsa, or Pan Asian
style. The appetizers are outstanding as well
as plentiful. Their salads, steaks, chops,
chicken and pasta dishes are as well!
Our wonderful and friendly waitress
Melissa recommended that Cheli, Bebe, and
I begin with one of their specialty martinis,
the Insomniac, Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay
Mango Rum with a burst of energy from Red
Bull, being our favorite. We also enjoyed the
Hpnotiq Breeze, a tropical combination of
Bacardi Coco, Hpnotiq and pineapplegar
nished with a glow stick!! And the Bonefish
Martini, Stolichnaya vodka, champagne, a
splash of cranberry juice, and garnished
with an orange slice. For appe
tizers we gorged on the Ahi Tuna
Sashimi, sesame seared, sliced thin
tuna with wasabi, loaded Crab
Cakes, and the ultimate Bang Bang
Shrimp. If you like blooming onion, just
imagine the same batter fried on a mound of
shrimp with the spicy bayou mayo tossed all
over it!! YUMMY!!
With most entree’s you get your choice of
The Bonefish Caesar, the House Chopped
Salad, crisp chopped greens, tomatoes,
Kalamata olives, heart of palm and pine nuts,
tossed with citrus herb vinaigrette, or the
Corn Chowder with Lump Crab. Each were
delicious, but Cheli could not stop raving
thoughout the entire meal about how the
House Chopped Salad was the best she had
ever tasted!!
We enjoyed a variety of entrees including
Chilean Sea Bass, a very light and mild fish.
Even Cheli, the pickiest fish eater I ever met,
thought this fish was one of the best she had
ever tasted due to it’s filet texture and one
she will definitely order in the future.
Cheli had a Filet Mignon with lumpcrab
and marsala on the side. A high quality piece
of cow, this filet was tender and juicy with a
wonderful flavor of its own, but the marsala
accompaniment was surprisingly delish!!
I devoured one of the daily specials,
Spinach
Bacon Gorgonzola Wahoo,
although I substituted the Pacific Wahoo for
Gulf Grouper. We all loved this fishofa
dish!! All entrees are served with your
choice of Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Potatoes
Au Gratin, Angel hair with Marinara, Island
Rice, or Steamed Vegetable Medley. We all
opted for the garlic mashed potatoes and ate
every bite of it!!
There is so much more to choose from
such as the Pistachio Parmesan Crusted
Rainbow Trout, sauteed and topped with
artichokes and a basil lemon butter, or,
Chicken Portabella Pasta, fire roasted
chicken, spinach fettuccine, portabellas and
peppers sauteed with tomatoes, onions,
olives, garlic, and capers in a light white
wine cream sauce. Hungry yet?! Some of

Meat Loaf: Is that live, that piano?
Can they all hear me? Okay. So,
they should introduce themselves
individually… and tell me a little
bit about themselves and what the
hobbies they enjoy.
(Gary Graft) with (Watch) Radio
Network: Hi Meat Loaf, how are
you?
Meat Loaf: Good, how are you
doing?
(Gary Graft): All right, all right.
So tell bring us up to date, if you
will, on Bat Out of Hell 3.
Meat Loaf: I knew that was going
to be the first question. All right,
somehow, you know what, I knew
that was the first question.
So anyway, Michael Beinhorn is
producing and Jimmy is writing.
Jimmy is just he had some health
issues and really physically not up
to par to sit in the studio for a long
time and do it. So Michael Beinhorn
is going to produce and Jimmy is
writing.
(Gary Graft): When do you expect
we're going to hear it and tell us a
little bit about what is…
Meat Loaf: No, I know, and other
people are expecting for you to hear
it but, legitimately, I think In about
a year from now.
(Gary Graft): What's it give us a
sense of what it sounds like?
Meat Loaf: God, I don't know what
it sounds like because, you know,
it's like I've had okay, Bat Out of
Hell I was produced by Todd
Rundgren, he's completely out of
his mind. Bat Out of Hell II is pro
duced by Jim Steinman, he is com
pletely insane. Michael Beinhorn is
as odd as the other two, and he's
doing III, so I have no idea.
It's going to sound like Meat
Loaf singing and then, you know,
it's just this they evolved, you
know. I mean, I think 2 sounded dif
ferent than 1 and they it evolved.
I mean, it's been how many
years, so, it has to evolve, it has to
get I think it's going to be a little
more edgy myself, but, that's just
how I'm looking at it.
Greg Haymes, with Albany Times
Union: Hello Meat Loaf.
Let's
continue with a little bit of a same
thing; are you going to have you
been recording?
Meat Loaf: No. We…Jimmy has
been writing and I'm actually
we're doing one of the songs live
right now. But it's not a key piece to
the record, it's just something we
could put up and get our feet wet,
and it's a little edgier than the previ
ous Bat records.
So, not quite as melodic, but
edgier, I don't know what that
means but there you go.
Greg Haymes: So we will get a lit
tle bit of a sneak preview on it too?
Meat Loaf: Yeah, you'll get a little
bit of a feel. In fact, that's the name
of the song, "Only When I Feel."
(John
Burgess)
with
the
Commercial Appeal Casino
Magazine: "The Hair of the Dog
That Bit You," well, what dog
prompted the tour name?
Meat Loaf: My dog, (Angus). And
there's a saying about a hair of a dog
and it's I think it's basic and I real
ly don't know what it means but
other people do so I'm like, you
know, it refers to after you've a
hangover, I think.
(John Burgess): Now, you've per
formed with symphonies on, you
know, huge elaborate stages, how
large of a band are you carrying on
this tour?
Meat Loaf: The same, you know
what? It's the same I've never
changed how large it is…it's always
been two guitars actually, it's less
than Bat Out of Hell because we
had two keyboard players, we had
(Styman), and then (Paul Jacobs)
took over… and (Paul Glenn) and
now, I have a guitar player named
(Randy Flowers) from Nashville…
and he plays a he goes up and
plays a little keyboard every now
but I prefer the guitar, so the guitar
play the guitar is really I mean,
of course, the piano is big influence,
but the guitar has influenced me
more than piano. And so, I don't
know how many people that is. I
have two singers, drummer, base,
two guitars, piano, and me.
Peter Tattersoll with the Sun
Herald: Do you have any upcom
ing acting projects?
Meat Loaf: I believe so, but you
know what, until the deal is done,
you can't ever talk about it. That's it,
yeah, superstition. Like you can't
face two mirrors together, that's why
barber shops went out of business.
Peter Tattersoll: But do you con
16

sider yourself an actor who sings or
a singer who acts?
Meat Loaf: I don't know. I consid
er myself a dog trainer. I don't
know. I'm an actor who sings…
Because I started as an actor. Well
yeah, I did start as an actor and then
I kind of did music, and then I did
acting, and then I've been to music,
and I've done, you know, acting and
kind of back and forth.
Peter Tattersoll: And does acting
give you more personal satisfaction
than you find in music or…
Meat Loaf: No, they're different. I
mean, when the shows are when
the shows are really gone, I'm get
ting, you know, I'm really getting
long in the tooth now and when the
shows are good, that's great, you
know. I'm not crazy about the mov
ing around part. I enjoy doing the
show. It's the moving around part
that kills you. The one, you know,
getting on a bus or getting on a
plane and doing whatever. That will
just it just kills me, it's like, you
know, we were in Europe and we
were flying a lot in Europe so and
we, you know, we had our own
plane and we were but sometimes,
after the show, you got an hour, you
know, 45 minutes to the airport and
to I know it sounds stupid but it's
exhausting. You know, and then
you've got to go back through cus
toms and (unintelligible) that's too
much. But I enjoyed doing the
shows. The shows are The shows,
so far this year, have been really
good. Some They've, you know,
been right up there with some of the
really good ones we've done.
Peter Tattersoll: And a follow I'd
like to know what kind of music do
you like to listen to?
Meat Loaf: Oh, I don't know. I listen
to everything just to see what they're
all doing. I really do. I listen from,
you know, to 50 Cent to Faith Hill. So
Because I want to know what every
body's doing, I just want to hear it.
Scott Cronick with the Atlantic
City Press: Getting to your televi
sionmovie stuff, is there a project
that you ever turned down that you
wish you didn't?
Meat Loaf: Well there was there
is there's a project that happened
long time ago that I didn't turn
down, it was just it was taped and
Coast Nightlife Observer
it was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's
Nest with Jack Nicholson. And I
was going to play the role of Billy
Bibbit and they had a writer strike. I
was all set. We were going to
Seattle and everything and they had
a writer strike.
Michael Douglas was producing
and then they flipped directors and
Milos Forman was trying to find me
and I had an agent at the time who
told him I wasn't available and I
was just sitting over in London, I
was filming Rocky Horror and I'm
done, and I'm just having fun in
London, and the agent said I wasn't
available and when I got back to
town and they said, “Man, Milos
Forman has been looking for you.”
I actually called him at 1:00 in the
morning. And he said, “Oh no, I
got Oh, oh, this is a problem.” And
he had hired, I can't remember his
name now. That actor He waited
on me, he said, "I waited on you as
long as I could." and he hired the
guy that afternoon. I was like, you
know… eight hours late from call
ing him. And other than that, no,
there's nothing I've turned down
because I think I've been right in
anything I've turned down. There's,
you know, there's stuff I've wanted
and they've said well, “We don't
want you to have this, we want you
to have this.” And I go, “I don't
want that, I want this.”
Jeff Niesel, with Cleveland Free
Times.: Hi Meat Loaf. I know last
time you're on tour, you played
some Hedwig songs. Are you still
doing that? And what do you like so
much about those tunes?
Meat Loaf: Oh well, it wasn't a
Hedwig song. If you really knew
Hedwig and you noticed the other
thing, the lyrics were different and
it was written by oh, (Steven) oh
god, oh man, I'm getting old.
(Steven) it's driving me nuts now.
But he changed the lyrics from the
Hedwig. I really like Hedwig. I
really like Hedwig.
And he
changed the lyrics and the whole
middle part was about me growing
up in Texas and this whole thing
and he actually wrote two new ver
sions and we changed the chorus.
So it was kind of a same song, but
not the same song.
Jeff Niesel: Oh, I see. Are you still
www.coastnightlifeobserver.com
playing those tunes?
Meat Loaf: No, we're not playing that song
now.
Jeff Niesel: Okay, it's too bad. I thought they are
really good.
Meat Loaf: Oh, we got good songs now too. We
got Well, three that, one, my daughter wrote,
Pearl, and then a cover, and then a new song.
Only When I Feel, so and so, we've got three
new ones.
Cheli Strumila with Coast Nightlife
Observer.: Hello Meat Loaf. I just like to thank
you for all the music that set the mood for so
many of my wonderful memories.
You've worked in the past with "a roster of
eclectic artists" including threetime Grammy
Winner, songwriter (Diane Warren), Nicki Sixx
from Motley Crue, Kevin Griffin from Better
than Ezra, and Stephen Trask, composer and
lyricist from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, since
that statement, who else have you added to that
list? And of all the new artists out today, do you
have any favorites?
Meat Loaf: No, I guess, Pink isn't a new artist
anymore; but I really do like her. And no, I like
there's so many else I like and I can't remember
their names. I'm telling you this is terrible. And…
Cheli Strumila: Well, have you worked with
any more? Have you actually worked…
Meat Loaf: No, not at all. We've just been
What did I do? I did like three little films last
year and then we I set around a lot last year
because the tour before, I thought I was going to
die. I mean, I really just I couldn't ever I had
the flu four times, I had a little I had an intes
tine surgery that I had to have, then I had the
heart procedure and I just this was one and
then I went to a race track and got burned my
vocal chords with nitroglycerin and Clorox
bleach from being on the track, and it was just a
miserable, miserable it was awful. And I I
didn't think I was ever going to do anything
again, and then, you know, I just said every
body kept calling, and I said, “Well, give me
some time off and let me just get back to get my
head back.” I got to get back on the horse
because it was so painful it I've never experi
enced an evening like that and it was actually
horrifying. And But we got back on, we've
done 20 shows so far and they felt really good
and it's been really good and the band's unbe
lievable. I literally I mean, my band is just I
take no responsibility for them other than I
don't take any responsibility, I can't even say I
helped them really put them together and my
daughter did help put some deal together and I
mean, over the but they're fantastic. I mean,
they just they blow me away every night…
Cheli Strumila: Well, you know, I'm excited to
see you when you come here to the Beau Ravage
on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
I recently walked in to a local music show and
the place is so empty, yet I go on pay sites on the
Web and there are millions who are downloading
music. What do you think about the file sharing
that is going on through the Internet today and
do you, as an artist, receive your fair share from
the music that is downloading on such type sites
as Rhapsody and Napster?
Meat Loaf: As an artist, you've never received
your fair share, bottom line. And there's not a sin
gle artist in the world that has been paid what
they're owed from a record company. And,
they're definitely not getting paid from the
Internet and how do I feel about it? Well, I think
17
SEPTEMBER 2005
it's not right to file share, but in some ways it's
good because people are constantly seeing your
name and downloading stuff. But I don't think
that's I mean, I think it's good to have your name
out there and then, you know, and help sell tick
ets, and if you're in my situation kind of keep you
going. And but at the same time, you know, it's
not fair. It's like downloading movies or, it's like
stealing, it's like going I'm seeing this in Europe
a bit, so, you know, if you go in would you, you
know, would you beat up your dentist and walk
out or, you know, you need to pay for things and
it's like stealing and it's kind of like that musical
Rent, it kind of set the tone for all these stuff and
it really pisses me off actually.
Cheli Strumila: Yes. But, from with what I
understand like with the Rhapsody and Napster,
you're actually paying for the downloads. So
these companies aren't paying the artists?
Meat Loaf: Oh, you know, well, I couldn't tell
you in a million years about that dear. I don't
even know what you were talking about. You
know, I didn't know what Rhapsody and I just
thought you meant the file sharing where they're
just, you know, basically taking it because they
do that with movies and because you have the
thing where they can yeah, file sharing, that's
exactly right. And not you're not getting you
may get a what do they pay? Three bucks for
file sharing or something?
Cheli Strumila: With Rhapsody you're paying
9.99 a month, download whatever you want and
if you want to burn it your pretty much paying
the price you would pay if you bought it at a
music store.
Meat Loaf: Well, you know, there should some
way to figure out how to split that between 8
million artists.
Phil Schwartz with the Daily Gazette: The Bat
Out of Hell is a such a huge phenomenon and
that was kind of stretching over 30 years. Why
does it take you 15 years to kind of between
albums that just continue the story?
Meat Loaf: Just, you know, we just do other
things. I have no explanation for that other than,
you know, time passes time flies actually…
you know, it doesn't honestly, it doesn't feel
like 30 years. I mean, it's been 10, 11 years since
Anything for Love and it doesn't feel that. I
mean, it really does not feel that.
Phil Schwartz: Is it scary to follow up on a, you
know, these two past albums that have been just
so phenomenally…
Meat Loaf: No. Nothing's scary anymore. The
only thing that's scary is, you know the world
is scary…you know, we're like, you know, we
help we if we do some good for people that's
great. But, you know, there are so many other
things to be worried about and scared about.
But, no it doesn't I just go in, I'm going to do
the best I can do and I know Jimmy is going to,
you know, do the best he can do and I know
Michael Beinhorn is going to do the best he can
do and I know that the management company is,
you know, all over this thing, and they're really,
you know, we're working on the cover and we're
so we just do what we can do and it comes.
And it's going to be really it's going to be good,
I mean, I can feel that. I think it's going to be
very good, and so and I think it's going to be a
little different, it's going to be interesting.
Phil Schwartz: Yeah, well said. And from what
I can tell, teenagers are still listening to Paradise
by the Dashboard Light…and that's that seems
quite amazing to me. What do you think that it's
Coast Nightlife Observer
still being picked up by kids…
Meat Loaf: Because it doesn't change. It that
emotional thing does not change. That story does
not change especially, you know, the stop right
there and emotionally people have been the
same for a long time, forever, as far as I know. I
mean, I think cavemen kind of got into this
realm as well, you know, they just used clubs, it
was a different thing. And they drag them by,
you know, you hit women over the head and
drag them by the hair.
Bob Ross of Tampa Tribune: You've been, of
course, you've been so busy. I mean, you've been
on tour, you've made at least a dozen movies
since Fight Club and I think you got three in the
can that haven't even come out yet. So I'm won
dering what you do for your health work out rou
tine or whatever?
Meat Loaf: Well, I've got a gym in my house
and I look at it. It's a very nice, little gem and it's
it looks great. No, you know, it's like, I do, you
know, I don't do a lot but I do enough to, you
know, keep me kind of moving. I mean I'm not,
you know, I'm not pumping iron, by any stretch
of the imagination. Obviously, you can tell that.
Bob Ross: The other thing, I hate to bug you but
editors are editors and they want to know how
old you are and I found three different sources.
the All Music Guide says you were born in '46,
the Internet Movie Database says you were born
in '47…What's the deal?
Meat Loaf: I'll tell you what my passport says.
Fiftyone.
Bob Ross: Hey, how long is this tour that you're on?
Meat Loaf: We're going on until October 1.
Short. It's not long.
Bob Ross: And did you play stuff from all your
albums?
Meat Loaf: No, not from all of them. We'd be up
there for about four years. What are we playing
from? I don't even know what we played from.
We I got we, you know, we've got like I don't
know, it's pretty fast this year, though. We it's a
little fireball of a show. It's like the shortest show
we've done and we've got as many songs and it
just doesn't stop. It's and it's an aerobic work
out, is really what it is. It's my Jane Fonda video.
Thomas Demopilis The Daily News
Saratogan: I guess, first up, have you ever
snuck into a midnight showing of “Rocky
Horror” picture… Dressed as your character?
Meat Loaf: No, Not since we were actually
doing I was actually doing it on Broadway and
Tim Curry and myself Tim had two friends in
town and we went down to see the movie. And at
the (Waverly) and they wouldn't let us in. and I
said to them, I said, “Wait a second, this is Tim
Curry, the star of the movie.” And Tim his he
had he didn't have his hair. And she goes, “It
doesn't look like him.” And I said, “But and I'm
Eddie,” and he goes, “It really doesn't look like
you.” Because I was wearing a wig in the movie
and now, you know, I've got my hair down, she
goes, “He's got black hair.” I said, “It's a wig.”
And the woman running the thing and eventually
we got in and she passes by me and leans over and
goes, “This better be you in this movie.” I was
like going, “Okay, yeah.” So that's been the last
time. I mean I have done some promo because
(Lou Adler) was very gracious in allowing the
video, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, 30 years
ago, to be like a trailer to the movie. So Paradise
ran in all the movie theaters thanks to (Lou).
Thomas Demopilis: I guess second of all, in
from a fan's perspective, earlier in your career,
www.coastnightlifeobserver.com
you had shared the stage with like the Stooges
and The Who and the MC5 an …I mean do you
carry as a rock and roll fan from I mean when
these bands were at their prime or in their prime
I should say, do you carry around memories of
that era?
Meat Loaf: Oh, I do. I'm much more of a fan of
the late them, you know, mid to late 60s and the
early 70s as far as the rock bands go, because
everybody strives to be completely different. I
mean you couldn't wear the same clothes, you
couldn't have the same amp. You could have a
Fender, but you had to make your Fender look
different than the Fender from before. It's like,
if you go talk to somebody like (Ted Nugent), if
you can, you know, feel talk to you about this
stuff, you know, it's like he was like the Spinal
Tap, his went to 11. And you know, they had to
play different guitars and they had to be every
thing had to be different. And there was that
if you go look at Woodstock and just look at the
various artists that were on Woodstock, how
oh, god, I'm old. I hate this when I can't think of
one but it was so varied in its whole concept
and now that you look at festivals today, then it's
all heavy metal, it's all folk, it's all rap, it's all
this, where Woodstock is the best example and it
didn't make any difference. It was about the
music and it was about all the music. And that
was like radio, back then. Radio played whatev
er it could play. And now all of sudden, radio
went off to, “Okay, now we're going to play, you
know, country, we're going to play modern coun
try, we're going to play hiphop country, we're
going to play, you know, hiphop, we're going to
play rap, we're going to play gangster, we're
going to play heavy metal, we're going to play
new wave, we're going to play" you know, I
don't even know what the hell they're doing. So
I can't even keep up with it anymore.
Thomas Demopilis: Oh, yeah. Except for Pink.
Meat Loaf: Well, yeah, because I think she's
very talented and I really like her voice.
Sean Daily St. Petersburg Times: Hey listen, I
want to know, do you ever got approached by
Fight Club fans, like they creepy ones? Like
seeking enlightenment from Bob?
Meat Loaf: No, I've never been approached by
creepy ones. I get approached by Fight Club
fans all the time.
Sean Daily: Hey, 30th anniversary of “Bat Out
of Hell” is coming out, any plans to celebrate in
a certain way?
Meat Loaf: Yeah, yeah, yeah. they are planning
to do something.
Leslie Martin The Weekender: Now, I was
going back to your movie career because I loved
you in Fight Club, what was the best role you've
played in the movie, the most enjoyable for you?
Meat Loaf: The best role for me was a movie
called, “Focus” by Arthur Miller with Bill Macy
and Laura Dern and David Paymer. And Arthur
Miller was actually on the set and he came onto
the set. I mean it wasn't because he came to see
it was just per chance that he came the day that
I'm shooting the big scene that I had and it was
like, you talk about being nervous, here's Arthur
Miller and you're up. And I mean it's like, oh
man, it was with Bill Macy so that helped some,
I wasn't all by myself. But when he showed up,
it the camera was on me, it was on my turn
around...but he liked it, it was very cool.

MS Gulf CoastA record number of
seafood booths will participate in the 24th Annual Biloxi
Seafood Festival, September 10 11, at Point Cadet Plaza in
Biloxi. Organizers are also expecting a record number of atten

The Biloxi Seafood Festival is one of the largest events in the

organize an outstanding Biloxi Seafood Festival," Crim said.
"This event is the premiere celebration of the seafood heritage on

of and more will be represented in scrumptious style."
Culinary highlights include boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, fried
fish, seafood po'boys, shrimp salad, seafood jambalaya, shrimp
spaghetti and even alligator sausage. And don’t forget about the
Annual Greater Gulf Coast Gumbo Championship on Sunday.
The gumbo competition, which is open to the public, is held from
noon until 3 p.m., and for an addi
tional $5 visitors are invited to
sample more than 20 delicious
kinds of seafood gumbo.

WINE SOCIAL THURSDAYS
Master of Wine to Attend
Mignon’s Wine Social
Biloxi, MS –Mignon’s Steaks & Seafood, the premier fine dining
restaurant at the Palace Casino Resort, will host its upcoming wine
social on Thursday, September 1st. The wine social will feature spe
cial guest Peter Koff, winemaker for Fairest Cape Beverage
Company.
Koff is a native of South Africa and developed a
profound interest and taste for fine wines. His
desire for knowledge led him to the Cape Wine
Master Examination, which he passed in 1984 to
become one of only five Cape Wine Masters in
South Africa. In 1987, Koff emigrated from South
Africa to the United States and was given the
opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of entering
the UK Master of Wine program. In 1993, Koff
qualified as a Master of Wine and became one of
twelve in the United States and one of thirty in the
world. Later, Koff saw the opportunity to be inde
pendent and to be involved with his wholehearted
hobby, and, in 1995, he began a wine import and
wholesale business. Today, Fairest Cape Beverage
Company represents some of the finest wines in the world including cult wine from California,
awardwinning Pinot Noir from Oregon, worldclass Barbaresco from Italy, and the finest Pinotage
from South Africa. Koff currently resides in Irvine, California and will attend the Mignon’s
September wine social.
Mignon’s is home to the monthly wine social, which offers class, a fabulous social scene, a
relaxing environment, and, of course, wine. Held on the first Thursday of every month in the exqui
site Mignon’s Lounge, the wine social is held in a delightful atmosphere with heavy hors d’oeuvres
and numerous wine representatives offering samples of their wines.
The wine social is $25.00 per person and is held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Mignon’s
Lounge on the second floor of the hotel. For a classy and sophisticated night of wine tasting,
call Mignon’s at 2283862023 for reservations.
Biloxi, MSI was at the local
grocery store the other day and
ran into a friend that I hadn’t
seen in years who lives here in
Ocean Springs. We greeted each other,
chatted about old times and when asked
what I was doing now I answered “we opened up a restaurant called Coffee Fusion Bubbletea
Cafe.” I then invited him to come by sometime. To this he replied “I’ve seen the place but I real
ly don’t care for coffee, thanks anyways.” My heart sank as I realized that a lot of local people
probably don’t know yet that we are a full restaurant and not just a coffee shop. Also that we have
literally hundreds of different drinks, that don’t have coffee in them or don’t taste like coffee. I
understand that we have the word coffee in our name, but we have the words “BubbleTea” &
“Café” in our name as well, which means restaurant. We offer over 40 food items on the menu
and daily specials. We serve breakfast all day long featuring bagels with cream cheese, or bagel
sandwiches with egg, cheese and your choice of bacon, ham or sausage. In addition we have
Oatmeal with fresh fruit, and French toast. We also have a huge healthy lunch menu with a large
selection of Grilled Italian Panini sandwiches, fresh Gourmet Salads, healthy wraps and our sig
nature Grilled Croissants. Side Items such as fresh fruit cups, gourmet chips, and homemade pasta
salad. We offer a kids menu, and hot soups in the fall and winter. And I believe we have one of
the largest dessert selections on the coast. Homemade Italian Cream Cakes, cheese cakes, cook
ies, brownies, and pies and more. The customers rave about our lunches and the fact that it’s one
of the few places on the coast to have a healthy gourmet meal. And all of our lunches are priced
at an affordable $6.50. And the quality can’t be beat. So I have made it my personal mission to
let everyone know why we have the word “Café” in our name. We not only have the largest selec
tion of coffee drinks, fresh fruit smoothies and asain bubbleteas on the coast, but a fantastic healthy
food menu as well. If you would like to see our whole menu or find out more about us, log onto
www.coffeefusionbubbletea.com and check it out.

I shall not have lived in vain while here.
Biloxi, MSAnd now for the moment all the
Coast’s been waiting for…the unveiling of the
first hot band to play at the new Hard Rock Hotel
& Casino Biloxi. Hard Rock Biloxi announced
today that modern rock band, VELVET
REVOLVER, is to be the first ticketed band to
perform at 8 p.m. Friday, September 9 at Hard
Rock Live. Tickets may be purchased starting at
10 a.m. Monday, August 15 at ticketmaster.com
for $125.
VELVET REVOLVER will christen the 7,500
sq. ft. Hard Rock Live venue at the new Hard
Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi with a full out rock
and roll concert. The venue has 4 million dollars
in sound and lighting equipment and can host up
to 1,500 people. Concertgoers will get that real
concert arena feeling with standing room only on
the floor and the ability to get up close and per
sonal. VIP guests can watch the show in style
with 388 balcony seats and relax in the adjoining,
very elaborate bar and lounging area just off the
entertainment venue and overlooking the gaming
floor. This will also be the place that VIPs get to
meet and mingle with the entertainers perform
ing at Hard Rock Live. All Hard Rock Live con
cert attendees must be 21 or older.
Everything you've heard about VELVET
REVOLVER is true. This is the band that brings
together three former members of one of rock's
greatest groups Guns N' RosesSlash, bassist
Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum
together with one of rock's most charismatic
front men, Scott Weiland, formerly of Stone
Temple Pilots, and guitarist Dave Kushner, ex
Wasted Youth, Electric Love Hogs and Dave
Navarro's band, among others.
“The band was chosen as the first to play
Biloxi for its popularity and authentic true rock
and roll roots. We know from our market
research that there are high entertainment expec
tations from locals and we think they will love
our choice of Velvet Revolver and other upcom
ing entertainment,” said President of Hard Rock
Biloxi, Joe Billhimer.
The idea behind VELVET REVOLVER
remains a powerfully simple one. "There is no
real concept to me," explains guitarist Slash.
"We set out to make music we enjoy and can feel
proud of playingmusic that people we like will
want to listen to. As soon as you start thinking
beyond thatabout wanting to keep up with the
Joneses or about fitting in with somebody else's
formatthat's when you lose the map. So we've
just done what we do, and tried to have a cool
time doing it."
The band recently released, “Come On Come
In” for the Fantastic Four film and since releas
ing their debut album Contraband on RCA in
2004 – a record that Rolling Stone hailed as
“modernrock nirvana…vicious, unapolo
getic…”VELVET REVOLVER have become
rock’s most exciting and successful new band.
CONTRABAND has now sold over three mil
lion copies worldwide, earned a Grammy Award,
shattered records and garnered massive critical
acclaim.
CONTRABAND debuted at #1 on the
Billboard album chart, selling over 250,000
copies. Notably, this marks the bestever debut
for a new rock artist in the SoundScan era.
Newsweek describes the band as “truly explo
sive” and Maxim says, [Velvet Revolver} “bring
unpredictability back to rock.”
VELVET REVOLVER is everything the
band's name suggests and much more. This is
modern rock with a sense of danger and beauty
that's been missing for far too long. Their suitably
explosive yet gorgeous debut effort Contraband
marks the spot for a new beginning from a band
of rock & roll brothers united by some legendary
pasts and a suddenly brighter future.
Slash, McKagan and Sorum came together to
play a benefit/tribute for their friend and fellow
musician Randy Castillo in 2002. The buzz of
playing together again got the three thinking.
"There was still something very powerful and
intense between us," says Slash.
"That chemistry never went away," says
McKagan.
Sensing enough time had lapsed since their
lessthanpleasant departures from Guns N'
Roses, the trio linked with Kushnera high
school friend of Slash's who had been playing
with Duff in recent years. "He's our secret
weapon," says Duff. "He plays amazing textures
and he can handle himself with Slash." After
some false starts with other musicians, the four
decided to try an unusually open call for a new
frontperson.
Documented by VH1 cameras for an upcom
22
ing special, this process turned out to be
long and sometimes painful. Fortunately, as the
Great Lead Singer search was going on, Duff
was spending time socially with Stone Temple
Pilots then front man, Weiland. Now the rest is
history. Weiland was the perfect fit they were
looking for.
For Slash, "We were like a bunch of kids who
just learned how to play the same chord together.
That's what it's been like every time we've done
something together. We're thrilled, like 'Hey, we
wrote a song!' 'Hey, we played a gig!' Maybe
that's why this has workedbecause we're actu
ally the opposite of jaded."
Early in its evolution, the group released the
song "Set Me Free" on The Hulk soundtrack and
recorded a cover of Pink Floyd's "Money" for
another movie, The Italian Job. When it came
time to sign a deal and record their first album,
the band chose RCA in part because of the inter
est of Chairman Clive Davis. "Clive actually
flew out here and courted us, and he watched us
rehearse along with his little posse," Slash
remembers. "It was really flattering because he's
such an icon and he's been doing it for so long
and can really recognize something."
That decision made, it was time for VELVET
REVOLVER to take aim and make their first
album. Now the band is on tour and you can see
them play the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the first
time only at Hard Rock Live at Hard Rock Hotel
& Casino Biloxi.

Biloxi, MSLike most of
the Coast's barhoppers, I have
a slight phobia of crossing over that dreaded bar
rier (the 110), especially if the journey is going to involve drinking.
However, at Cheli's behest, I recently gathered my courage and followed the
party path least traveled to check out Orange Grove's trendiest spot for hot
nightlife.
On the night, (ehrr...morning) I headed North, I had barely cleared the entryway when I
began to understand what makes The Edge the most popular bar that side of the Coast; it's
the people. A fullscale birthday party for regular Tallin Tillman was just starting to fizzle
out. Without even knowing who I was, Tallin herself greeted me at the door with a big hug
and a welcoming smile. While slightly stumbling around she introduced me to employees
and friends while explaining that this was like home to her. "Everybody knows everybody,
even if you are new," she said. "We have a lot of fun together meeting new people, listen
ing to the music and dancing."
Dancing? The last time I made it to The Edge, I would have classified it as a bar with a
few pool tables.
Nowadays, those tables have turned and been pushed into the new expansion room to
make way for a stage, DJ booth, and most importantly, yes, a dance floor.
So what's with all this transformation? A recent change in management includes Robert
Camp, who joined the team at The Edge with a plan to "set progress in motion, and add fresh
faces to a great set of regulars."
The success of this effort not only shows in the inner expansion and the addition of a com
fortable lounge setting, but also continues outside the bar into an allnew spacious front
patio.
But even a wellbuilt venue needs draws, and The Edge covers all of the Coast's favorite pastimes:
P Monday's bring karaoke with SP Sound.
P Pool league is Tuesday nights.
P Wednesday and Saturday nights, DJ's TRoy and Supercrunk keep the new dance
floor slamming with hiphop, techno and old school tunes.
P Ladies Night! Females enjoy three free drinks from 92 on Wednesdays.
P Dart league is on Thursdays.
P Friday nights bring the best of local and regional rock bands.
P On a trial basis, The Edge is opening its doors to the 1820 crowd on Saturdays from
93 with a $10 cover.
P Happy hour is 27 with 2 for 1 well drinks and $2 domestics.
P And, of course, The Edge welcomes the Coast's biggest late night crowd (the service
industry) with SINful aftermidnight drink specials including $1.50 bottles and wells
every night of the week.
Here, the bartenders take time to get to know their patrons. During the evening it's like
Cheers; everyone knows your name. Later, the place turns into a nightclub, drawing regu
lars and adventure seekers for socializing and festivities.
Just barely North of I10, on Three Rivers Road in Orange Grove, The Edge of town
proves to be a great place for a change of atmosphere and making new acquaintances.
Through renovations and the hiring of several new staff members, The Edge has successful
ly transformed from a small locals bar into an entertainment facility set to accommodate the
Coast's growing crowd of party seekers.

Walter Anderson Museum of Art announces
September 17 Film Premiere at
Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center
Ocean Springs, MSThe Walter Anderson Museum of Art is pleased to announce the debut of a
biographical film, Walter Anderson: Realizations of an Artist, which will open on Saturday,
September 17, 2005 at 7:00 P.M. at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs.
Producers Winston Riley and David Wolf, two New Orleans independent filmmakers, formed a cor
poration explicitly to enable them to create this biography, a short segment of which was previewed at
the Walter Anderson Museum on September 22, 2004, to an enthusiastic response. Unable to wait for
full funding, the producers began making the film in August 2003 using their own equipment, con
ducting interviews and gathering research in their spare time. “This was a labor of love”, said Marilyn
Lyons, executive director of the Walter Anderson Museum. “We are thrilled that these talented young
men have made a sensitive documentary that epitomizes the essence of Walter Anderson, and espe
cially delighted that the film will premiere at the beautiful Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center.”
In Walter Anderson: Realizations of an Artist, Anderson’s family members and friends share their
stories and memories of the painter. The film also contains discussion with famed scholars and art crit
ics, such as Paul Richard of The Washington Post. John Anderson, Walter Anderson’s son, took the film
makers on a trip to his father’s beloved Horn Island in a small sailboat. Conducting an interview with
John Anderson on this locale, the producers have captured impressive images of this island, where the
artist spent a great deal of time for eighteen years, painting the flora and fauna of the region. This hour
long production also contains footage of Oldfields, Anderson’s wife’s family plantation home in Gautier.
“We are grateful that so many people stepped forward to assist us in this quest, including The
Family of Walter Anderson, The Mississippi Humanities Council, The Booth Bricker Fund, The
Mississippi Arts Council, The Reilly Foundation, The Mississippi Film Commission, Dr. & Mrs.
Donald Bradburn, The Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation, and many personal dona
tions”, said Riley, producer of the film. “In spite of this assistance, we were still lacking funds, as
documentary production is a very costly enterprise. John Mullen of Dallas and New York then pre
sented a very generous gift, enabling us to complete this undertaking”, said Wolf, the coproducer.
“We are also thankful to Marilyn Lyons, the executive director of WAMA, as well as the Museum
staff, who assisted us in the grantseeking process, which is a very complex one”.
The film will be offered to Public Broadcast Services (PBS) for a “hard feed”. “Hard feed” is
an industry term indicating that every PBS station and affiliate nationwide will have the opportu
nity to present the program.
The authors of this film have gathered hundreds of relevant photographs, archival footage, and com
pelling pieces of Walter Anderson’s artwork. In the midst of this intense research, Riley and Wolf were
rewarded with the unearthing of heretofore undiscovered film of Walter Anderson himself, rowing to
Horn Island. In their effort to preserve and highlight the history of this important artist, the producers
intend that the documentary will be used as part of a teaching tool within Mississippi state schools, and
they will honor any institution’s request to view the film or use the film as a teaching aid. It is their pur
pose to make this documentary widely available, seen by the broadest possible spectrum of viewers.
Light refreshments will be served immediately after the screening. The Mary C. O’Keefe
Cultural Center is located at 1600 Government Street in Ocean Springs. Ticket prices are $20.00.

MS Gulf CoastCall it a passion. Call it a dream. Or, to quote
Jake and Elwood Blues, maybe they’re on “a mission from God.”
But the four members of south Mississippi’s Tailbone Smitty have
a clear agenda; they want the Deep South and, ultimately, the
entire country to remember and enjoy what they call “NOS
ROCK”, an acronym for new, old school rocknroll. In today’s
world the lines dividing one musical genre from another are get
ting increasingly blurred. Could this be a product of a “melting
pot” attitude for music making? Or maybe a desire for record
companies to touch on as many listening demographics as possi
ble? Whatever the reasons, the guys in Tailbone Smitty see this as
a wake up call to produce music for those of us who still believe
that rocknroll is about attitude, loud guitars, lyrics that make
sense and a very common but often overlooked emotion; love.
Their story begins in the mid to late 1980’s, amidst the deca
dence of L.A. hair metal bands and “Reganomics” that the first
seeds of Tailbone Smitty were sown when high school acquain
tances John Wolverton and Jimmy Stockstill found themselves in a
local rock band formed by mutual friend and then local junior high
band director Jerry Cumberland. Through their growing years John
and Jimmy formed a strong, albeit siblings like, relationship that
would prove caring but contentious enough to spark a creative
team that would develop into the motor propelling Tailbone Smitty
some ten years after their initial pairing. In 1997, while writing and
producing songs for the Nashville based Ridgewood Music/BMI
publishing and production house, Stockstill, feeling the need to
expand creatively outside the country music scene, contacted
Wolverton with the hopes the two would reunite under the auspices
of a writing project dubbed Mosaic. Mosaic’s sole reason for exist

ing, at that time, was to function
simply as a song factory. This goal would come to fruition as John
and Jimmy would find themselves sitting, after three years of writ
ing, with a catalog of some 25 plus songs, several of which would
find their ultimate home on Tailbone Smitty’s debut album “Bone
Appetite”, scheduled for release this fall. But this is only one part
of the Tailbone Smitty story.
Fate would step in and another important relationship would
begin and flourish. Johnny Davis, a Texas native transplanted to
the “real South”, was a student and player of the best of progres
sive rock styles since his early days of learning to play.
Throughout several bands and incarnations Davis, inspired by
Rush bassist Geddy Lee and Yes bassist Chris Squire, began hon
ing his own chops and song writing skills. Leading up to the late
1980’s Davis had developed into one of the most in demand bass
players north of New Orleans and within the south Mississippi
music scene. It was then, in late 1987, that Davis and Stockstill
found each other and began writing and playing in a Rush cover
group that also doubled as a showcase for their collaborative com
posing efforts. This band, known locally as White Wing, lasted
until the fall of 1989, when Stockstill feeling the old nagging need
toward greater personal development, parted ways with Davis and
began playing country music both live and in local and regional
commercial studios.
Much water under the bridge later, Stockstill in 2002, while
freelancing in local bands within the New Orleans area was intro
duced to a New York born and raised electronics engineer and bass
player named Bill Laletin. Laletin was then heading up a cover
band called GTO that was aimed at playing more exclusive ven

Lake/Northshore region. The drummer for GTO was none other
than Wisconsin’s own Jeff “Doc” Watson, a veteran musician
whose musical resume reads as extensive as Webster’s dictionary.
Yet again a friendship developed, this time based more around the
idea of playing music that was reminiscent of the music the two
grew up on now called classic rock the best of rocknroll music
from the early 1960’s through the mid to pre/disco era 1970’s.
The pieces had finally fallen into place for one of the best musi
cal projects to come out of the Deep South in years. A few phone
calls later and Stockstill, Wolverton, Davis and Watson found
themselves recording tracks for the first time together as Tailbone
Smitty in January 2005.
The songs are a collection of the best qualities fleshed out by
fifty years of great rocknroll. They take you places you’ve been
before and maybe a few that you haven’t. Listening to Bone
Appetite is like falling in love again, for the first time. These boys
want you to remember what being free, young and passionate is
all about, no matter what your age or background. It’s rock and
roll the way it was meant to be: loud and tender; wild and crazy
but mournful and hurting; and always, always fun.
The collective energies of these four musicians have begun to
instill hope in a listening audience starved for musical and artistic
authenticity. Ladies and Gentlemen NOS Rock is reborn in

ADVENTURES OF
HUCKLEBERRY FINN
Biloxi, MSBiloxi Little Theatre announces the
opening of its first season show of the year, “The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” on Friday,
September 9th. The show will run Sept. 9, 10, 15,
16, and 17th at 8:00 p.m.; and on Sept. 11th at 2:00
p.m.. Adapted by Randal Mylar from the book by
Mark Twain, and directed by Renee Dawson, this
show will be one for the whole family to enjoy.
Relive the great riverboat days of the Mississippi with Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer and Jim in this
new adaptation which premiered at the Denver Center Theatre Company. Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is a folktale chockfull of outlandish episodes, as two outcasts, fleeing down the
Mississippi on a makeshift raft, yield to a current that brings a new view of their society and, final
ly, themselves. You'll want to cheer for the bravest adventure of all when, somewhere down the
river, a homeless waif that nobody wants becomes a human being with a sense of his own destiny
as a true connection with another human being is made.

Gourmet Cooking
Fast and Easy classes
return to WAMA
Ocean Springs, MSDue to popular demand,
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art will offer
another series of four cooking classes, taught
by professional chef Diane Claughton, one of
the two founder members of Ocean Springs
Fresh Market, who trained at the Lavender Hill
Restaurant in London. This new set of classes
will take place on three consecutive Tuesdays,
September 6, 13, and 20, with the final class on
Monday, September 26th at the Art Cottage
across the street from the Museum. Starting at
5:30 p.m., sessions will last approximately two
hours. The cost of the four classes will be
$135.00 total to nonmembers, and $120.00
total to museum members, including all sup
plies. Dishes will be cooked during each ses
sion, and participants will sample generously of
everything Diane Claughton creates.
Having owned and operated two restaurants,
one in England and one in Covington,
Louisiana, Diane Claughton emphasizes good
wholesome food, local and seasonal whenever
possible, and with few or no chemical preserv
atives. She will introduce students to the art of
gourmet cooking requiring minimal time and
effort. Among other subjects, topics during the
next four sessions will include crab and corn
bisque; avocado with warm bacon dressing;
Bang Bang Chicken; Asian Noodles; Rustic
Fruit Tart; and tasting the differences between
homemade and store bought sauces.
“These classes are an epicurean delight”,
said Marilyn Lyons, executive director of the
Walter Anderson Museum. “They will also
make a perfect gift, bridal or otherwise, for
those who want to experience the prepara
tion of gourmet cooking firsthand.”
Diane Claughton is the owner of
L’Escargot—The Art of Food, a small food
company. With extensive experience working
in the hotels and country clubs of Louisiana as
an executive chef and as a test chef in England
for United Biscuits, Claughton has honed her
skills as a gourmet chef who creates dishes
quickly for today’s busy person. “People sim
ply don’t have the time anymore to spend hours
slaving away over a hot stove”, said Claughton.
“But they do want to enjoy fine dining, and I’ve
found in teaching these classes that the students
are amazed at how beautifully a refined menu
can be put together with much less effort than
they previously thought. There are all types of
tips that I give them, and it has really changed
the way they approach the culinary arts.”
In this series of classes, observers will dis
cover the secrets that professional chefs use.
Chocolate is a favorite on most people’s list, and
Diane Claughton will conduct a tasting of this
mouthwatering treat, enabling the participants to
develop a discerning palate. She will also teach
students how to make salmon with South
American flair. For those who are a bit bored by
making the same old omelets, Diane will demon
strate and serve a refreshingly delicious one.
In addition to the above, Ms. Claughton will
answer questions regarding the benefits and
drawbacks of organic food.

Springs. The Art Cottage is across the street at

has been strong. Bro. Eugene Edwards, Pastor of

warmly
expressed their
pleasure with the

cept of the event.
José C. Luna of
the Assembly of

said he was glad to
see the group
"pulling down the
walls and together
worshipping the
One who is the author and the finisher." Roy
Jackson, a member of Calvary Gulf Coast
attending with his wife Pamela, said of the
event, "Anytime all the children of Jesus get
together, we can feel the presence of Christ. It
doesn't matter what church, what color, what
denomination." Courtney Cade, 13, a member of
Lakeview Independent Baptist Church in
Saucier, said she "liked the Gospel music. We
brought the whole Youth Group eight adults
and fourteen young people." Chris Barlow of
McHenry, a member of the Michael Memorial
Baptist Church, is part of a seven family Bible
study group. "We decided to make Praising in
the Park this Saturday's meeting. It is very uplift
ing for all the churches in the area to get togeth
er like this. There are very few opportunities for
that to happen.”

D’Iberville, MSWith today's rising cost of health
insurance, wouldn't it make since to take better care
of ourselves? Unfortunetly, most of us will have
some type of major medical scare to realize that the life style
that many of us are living is actually killing us! Over 70%
of today's
population is overweight and out of
shape........why is that?
Being a gym owner and personal trainer, I have heard just about
every excuse in the book. The most popular excuse I hear the most
is, "I don't have time to workout?" But, you know what my reply is
every time? WRONG... YOU HAVE TO MAKE TIME!!!
Before work, during lunch or after work, the choice is yours....BUT,
your going to have to make the choice and stick with it, to succeed.
Fitness is a way of life and for many, it's a total lifestyle change. I
will use FAD dieting as example. How many of you have ever tried
the latest diet program, lost the weight quickly, but then afterwards,
put it all if not more back on? This is what I mean by lifestyle change.
Regardless of what you see on TV or read in the paper, there is
no magic pill for getting into shape. Think back to the time of when
you were in shape and then realize how long it's taken you to get this
out of shape. Remember all the fast food, alcohol and cigarettes you
put into your system and think of all the money you wasted doing it!
Have you ever heard that fitness is the fountain of youth? Take a
look at someone who has been living a healthy lifestyle and then look
at the person who hasn't......... Fitness is exactly why your seeing so
many more seniors doing what they do today. My grandmother is a
perfect example of a healthy lifestyle. She never stepped foot in a
gym but she walked over a mile to and from work every day until she
retired at 76 years young. She's still doing well today at the age of 98!
Now, when you do start your fitness program, be realistic with
your goals and understand that it's not going to happen over night.
If it took you 20 years to get out of shape, it will probably take
more than a few weeks to get back and then you'll need a mainte
nance program to keep it. Most people don't realize that your body
adapts to exercise, so for you to see the results you
want, you must have constant change in your workouts.
This is where I come in and it's my specialty!
Hello, my name is Joe Ladnier and I am a certified
personal trainer with the International Sports Science
Association (I.S.S.A.) I also own The Powerpit Gym in
D'Iberville, Ms. and am the head trainer at the Beau
Rivage Casino Spa.
Helping people achieve their fitness goals is what I
really enjoy doing. I started training clients in 1979 and
have since had clients from all over the world and from
all walks of life. At the age of 41, I am the current mas
ters world record holder in the bench press in the 242lb
class with 733lbs. Having competed in powerlifting
and bodybuilding from ametuer to professional
throughout my life, I am very aware of dieting and
nutritional supplements. For the last 4 years, I've been
a contract athlete with Universal Nutrition and write
articles
for
their
online
magazine
www.animalpak.com. I also write for several other
publications as well as doing seminars and strength
exhibitions.
Some of the reason's I opened The Powerpit Gym are:
1) Bring back the meaning to a real workout where you
can sweat and not worry about your makeup running or
someone hitting on you between sets!
2) A working man's gym, where you can stop after
work to train and not worry about getting dressed up.
3) Absolutely NO CONTRACTS! It's

simple..........You don't pay,
you don't train........no more worry about those
monthly withdrawals coming out of your checking account when
times are tough or you can't make it to the gym.

(Editor’s Note: How many times have you been watching a show
about the rich and famous and hear about how they got in shape
with a personal trainer. Jessica Simpson getting that hot lil’ body
so that she could look great in those daisy dukes during her role
in Dukes of Hazzard. Oprah looking fantastic for the first time in
her life because she can afford to pay her personal trainer and
personal chefs. Those VH1 specials showing stars like Madonna,
Brittney Spears, and others getting in shape with their personal
trainers showing them the proper techniques and encouraging
them to push themselves!! I don’t know about you, but I always
said, “Gosh, I wish I was rich and famous so that I could afford a
high priced trainer to get my butt in shape!! I am so glad that I
can share with all of you that you don’t have to be rich and famous
or have alot of money to get the same results!!
I recently learned that Beau Rivage Casino & Resort had hired
one of the top personal trainers in the country, Joe Ladnier, to run
their beautiful gym. Just for the heck of it, I dropped in on Joe one
day just to chat with him and see what it would take to be trained
by him!! How shocked I was to learn that I was not going to have
to take out a personal loan just to hire him to get my fat a** in
shape!! For just $30 a session and working around my busy sched
ule, Joe would train me in a one on one training session that would
focus on what kind of workout and the proper techniques I needed
for my body type. I learned more in my first session with Joe than
I had in the 26 years I have tried to get in shape!! I was feeling
muscles I never knew I had and learning that I had been doing
many of the machines and free weights completely wrong!! If
you’re not able to afford 5 sessions in a week, you can do a couple
days with Joe, learn what is best for you, do them on your own for
a couple weeks, and then come back to Joe to get some new work
outs to change up your routine so that you can achieve the look you
want!! He also has a website where he can set up a special work
out and eating routine that is best for you. His personalized web
workouts include videos of the proper techniques you should use
when you’re working out!!
I personally enjoy going to Joe’s Powerpit Gym, not only
because of the training I am receiving, but because many of the
times I have worked out, it has only been Joe, my friend Mary and
myself in there!! I don’t feel inadequate next to someone that looks
like they workout all day and never eat!! Not to mention that on
the wall are some of the hottest women that Joe has trained in his
career, swimsuit models, fitness competition competitors. Just see
ing that he has helped these women get into shape to the point
where they look like they came straight off the pages of Sports
Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, gives me even more motivation to
workout with Joe!! Knowing he trained each of those women gives
me even more confidence that I can achieve the look I am wanting
without the huge price tag most rich and famous are paying!! As
long as I listen and learn from Joe, and implement everything he is
telling me, I actually might be proud to get in a bathing suit by next
summer!!)

Remembering 9-11
God Bless Our Troops
I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
Her hair was up in a ponytail
Her favorite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school,
And she couldn't wait to go.
But her mommy tried to tell her,
That she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand,
If she went to school alone.
But she was not afraid;
She knew just what to say.
What to tell her classmates
Of why he wasn't there today.
I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.
Enjoy Your Freedom
& God Bless Our Troops
She heard a boy call out.
"She probably doesn't have one,"
Another student dared to shout.
The words did not offend her,
As she smiled up at her Mom.
And looked back at her teacher,
Who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back,
There were daddies along the wall in back, For
everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently,
Anxious in their seats.
One by one the teacher called,
A student from the class.
To introduce their daddy,
As seconds slowly passed.
At last the teacher called her name,
Every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching,
For a man who wasn't there..
"Where's her daddy at?"
39
SEPTEMBER 2005
He surprised me with pink roses,
And taught me to fly a kite.
We used to share fudge sundaes,
And ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him,
I'm not standing here alone.
"Cause my daddy's always with me,
Even though we are apart
I know because he told me,
He'll forever be in my heart"
And from somewhere near the back,
She heard a daddy say,
"Looks like another deadbeat dad,
Too busy to waste his day."
With that, her little hand reached up,
And lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat,
Heart Tug of the Month
But still her mother worried,
For her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again,
She tried to keep her daughter home.
But the little girl went to school,
Eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees
A dad who never calls.
The other day I was watching a documentary on PBS that was a very detailed
account of the events of 9-11. As I sat there watching it, I started thinking to
myself that although we remember 9-11, many of us getting all caught up in our
own lives, high gas prices, and the war in Iraq, have really forgetten the feeling
they felt that day as the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. How
everyday life as we knew it was taken away from us that day!!
During the documentary images of the planes crashing into the Trade Center,
the towers as they came tumbling down, and the Americans running for their
lives as a wave of debris rushed through the streets of New York City just like
the Tsunami that hit Thailand were flashed over and over again.
As I watched the PBS 9-11 special I became saddened at the lives that were
lost that day, not to mention the numerous American Soldiers Lives that have
been lost since, and how the true criminals that did this to our country have not
been brought to justice or met the same fate they gave to my fellow Americans
on that day.
September 11, 2005, 4 years since this horrible tragedy , Let us all take a
moment and say a prayer for all of those countless lives that our country has
lost!! Also say a prayer that those responsible will soon pay for what they did
to our families and friends!!
HER DADDY
Slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child,
Came words incredibly unique.
"My Daddy couldn't be here,
Because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be,
Since this is such a special day.
And though you cannot meet him,
I wanted you to know..
All about my daddy,
And how much he loves me so.
He loved to tell me stories
He taught me to ride my bike.
Coast Nightlife Observer
"I love my daddy very much,
He's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here,
But heaven's just too far.
You see he was a fireman
And died just this past year
When airplanes hit the towers
And taught Americans to fear.
But sometimes when I close my eyes,
It's like he never went away."
And then she closed her eyes,
And saw him there that day.
And to her mother's amazement,
She witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children,
All starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them,
Who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
They saw him at her side.
Beneath her favorite dress.
And from somewhere in the crowd of dads,
Her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter,
Who was wise beyond her years.
"I know you're with me Daddy,"
To the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers,
Of those once filled with doubt.
For she stood up for the love
Of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her,
Doing what was right.
Not one in that room could explain it,
For each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her,
Was a fragrant longstemmed pink rose.
And when she dropped her hand back down,
Staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft,
But its message clear and loud.
And a child was blessed,
if only for a moment,
By the love of her shining bright star.
And given the gift of believing,
That heaven is never too far
