Sing For Joy is a production of the Office of Church Relations of St. Olaf College.
By Pastor Bruce Benson, host
W
hen I was a seminary
student, my wife and I
lived right next door
to people who became our good
friends. One of them, in fact,
felt enough at home in our
apartment that he would often
walk to our door, knock to be let in, and then simply pace around the apartment, talking animatedly
about whatever was on his mind. Often he came
to anticipate something. He loved anticipating. I
think he had a gift for anticipation. Before the
football season began, he would show up at our
door wearing his referee’s outfit, and put on a little black-and-white-striped fashion show while he
laughed and flourished his shiny whistle. Before
the spring fishing season, he would show up in a
new vest, hardly able to contain his excitement
over the prospect of boats and gear and time on
the water.
After several visits like this over the months and
years, we discovered that he loved the anticipation
more than the real thing. Anticipation of fishing
gave him more joy than the fishing itself. It was
like that with winter, birthdays, new semesters,
vacations, most everything.
I think about him at this time of the year because
we in the Church and culture invest so much time,
energy and money anticipating Christmas. Some
years it seems like Christmas itself is an anti-climax
after our frantic, busy, bustling days beforehand.
How could we possibly bask in more than a day or
two of Christmas? We’re too worn out from our
hectic anticipation of it. But is that a fair-minded
way to evaluate Advent and December?
The Sing For Joy music playlists in this volume of
the newsletter cover programs that come after our
time of anticipation and celebration. We move
quickly from Christmas to the Epiphany season, a
time when the tempo of life seems to slow down a
bit — before we begin to anticipate Easter! And
that relaxation of feverish holiday schedules is a
good thing. Often we have more time — or at
least more mental energy — to contemplate God’s
presence among us, Emmanuel, during Epiphany
than during Christmas. An Epiphany season reflection on Christmas can be as enriching as the
Advent season anticipation of it.
That doesn’t mean, however, that we should dismiss or diminish the child-like joy of anticipation.
My seminary friend honestly loved the feelings of
anticipation, just as most children and, perhaps,
most adults anticipate Christmas with joy. It feels
good to look forward to something good. And to
be honest, my friend’s eager anticipation made me
feel good, too.
For some people, I know, the anticipation of
Christmas includes anxiety and dread. Families
that make life painful for each other instead of
joyful anticipate Christmas reunions not with holiday cheer but holiday depression. That sad fact of
human life is no reason to squelch the time of
Advent, but it can be a good reason to welcome
the season of Epiphany. It comes later; it comes
afterwards, when the story of the Incarnation can
be savored, wondered over, contemplated and
taken to heart. Whether one is looking forward or
looking back, the story of Bethlehem is good for
the soul.
