elations 19892 Sing for Joy Dec 10/26/06 12:48 PM Page 2 Celebrating 50 Years of broadcasting the finest sacred music DECEMBER 2006 / YEAR C Sing For Joy is a production of the Office of Church Relations of St. Olaf College. by Pastor Bruce Benson, host I know I should write about Advent and Christmas in order to make the subject of this column fit with the rest of the newsletter. But if I do that, the subject won’t fit with the time of year we are in as you read this. Unless you set this newsletter aside for a few weeks, a Thanksgiving theme is more current than Christmas. Christmas carols will have their day soon, but first, especially in farming communities in the northern part of the country, the more appropriate hymn is “Come, You Thankful People, Come” which says, “ . . . all is safely gathered in, e’er the winter storms begin.” Does it confuse matters to try to think about Thanksgiving and Christmas at the same time? I hope not. The world-wide celebration of the birth of Christ — Christmas — and the strictly American festival of Thanksgiving are not the beginning and concluding “book-ends” of one season, though it can certainly seem that way in shopping centers and mini-malls around the country. The turkeys barely have time to get out of the way before Santa’s reindeer are landing on the roof. If children mistakenly think that the Bethlehem shepherds were enjoying something like Thanksgiving dinner when suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, it wouldn’t be surprising. Our advertising and shopping habits have conflated the two seasons rather thoroughly. be a good thing. On one hand, Advent then serves as a reminder that our fourth-Thursday-of-the-month American holiday is not about abundance and privilege and the joys of consumerism and over-eating, but about thanksgiving. Thanksgiving to God. And, on the other hand, to enter the reflective season of Advent with a heart still full of thanksgiving is a reminder that our preparation for Emmanuel, God with us, is best done when we can be serious without being somber, contemplative without being dour, repentant without being afraid. If we begin a hymn in November with the words “come, you thankful people, come” and then sing our way right into Christmas with the words “come to Bethlehem and see,” have we done anything awful? Hardly. The one caveat has to do with who is invited by the gospel story and by the music of the church to come to Bethlehem and see. It would be wonderful if all who came to Bethlehem were indeed thankful people. But the truth of the matter is none of us is thankful all the time, and many of us, and many of those around us, come to Bethlehem in other ways: Come you questioning people come. Come you grieving people come. Come you anxious people come. The story of Christmas and the music of Advent and Christmas invite any and all to come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing. I hope that in the days ahead, the music you hear on Sing For Joy will invite you to join the Christmas procession to Bethlehem. And I hope you’ll want to sing along. Merry Thanksgiving. Happy Christmas. Peace be with you, However, this mingling of the seasons need not be a serious problem. To enter the Advent season — historically a season of fasting, contemplation and repentance — right from the Thanksgiving table can 19892 Sing for Joy Dec 10/26/06 12:48 PM Page 3 December 3, 2006 Scriptures for the (1R) (PS) (2R) (G) First Sunday in Advent: Jeremiah 33:14–16 Psalm 25:1–9 1 Thessalonians 3:9–13 Luke 21:25–36 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (VENI EMMANUEL) – French Processional, arr.
