Lot # 4441 Nevada, Eureka Eureka Drug Prescription Archive
- The medical history of a mining town from 1870 to 1920 18841899 Is this a history of medicine in Nevada? Is this an historically
important lot of 15,000 (or so) pieces of paper. A bottle collector’s
ephemera dream? A significant collection from the first druggist in
the state of Nevada? Yes, on all counts! This is three boxes (12,000 to
15,000 pieces) of prescriptions from an important Central Nevada
mining town from 1882 for nearly 15 years from F. J. Schneider. F. J.
SCHNEIDER, deceased, was one of Eureka’s most successful business
men and pioneer citizens. He came to the state in 1860, and was the
pioneer druggist of the state, and was successfully engaged in that
trade in Eureka from 1870 until his death. He was a man of shrewd
and fine business ability, and though he met with some misfortunes he
was in the main continuously successful, and, what is more, gained the
abiding respect of his fellow citizens in whatever community he cast
his lot. His business and his home were the centers of his affection and
his activity, and the worthy performance of the duties connected with
these relations gave him the love and esteem which he always enjoyed.
Mr. Schneider was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 24, 1834,
and his German parents emigrated to this country and settled in
Cincinnati when young people. Mr. Schneider was educated in his
native city and learned the drug business there. For three years he
was engaged in trade in New York City, and then during the fifties
came to San Francisco, where he followed his business for some
years. He was next in Downieville, California, and came thence to
Virginia City, Nevada, in 1860. Thirty pack mules carried his stock of
drugs and miners’ supplies, and he employed Mexican drivers. He set
up his establishment, building his own drug store, and was the first
druggist to enter that prosperous mining center. He also built another
building, which at that time rented for six hundred dollars a month,

General Americana~Nevada
but lost both structures in the devastating fire which swept the town.
He at once rebuilt and continued his business until he sold out to
Dr. A. M. Cole, who is now the oldest living druggist in the state. Mr.
Schneider went from Virginia City to Mountain City, where he was in
business a short time, was in Marysville, California, two years, then in
Truckee, and from the last named place came to Eureka in 1870. He
opened his store as one of the pioneer business houses of the growing
mining center, and in the early days of the town was burned out
twice within eleven months. He succeeded, however, during the great
flood, in keeping the water out of his place of business. No disasters
disheartened him or caused more than a slight check to his prosperity,
and he enjoyed a long continued career of business activity.
Mr. Schneider died in Eureka on June 2; 1893. Mrs. Schneider and
her son-in-law, Mr. Batchelder, settled the estate, and for the past
seven years Mrs. Schneider has successfully continued the business
of her late husband. She keeps a drug clerk, and spends much of her
time in the store. Her pleasant home is situated on the hill in Eureka,
from which there is a fine view of the town, and she still enjoys the
friendship of the many friends she and her husband have made in the
past thirty years. [“A History of the State of Nevada: Its Resources and

Blueprints from
Prominent
Nevada Architect
Frederick
DeLongchamps
Five blueprints
for the store and
building of Mr.
A.A. Brundidge
done by architect
Frederick J. DeLongchamps. DeLongchamps (1882-1969) graduated
from UNR with a degree in mining engineering in 1904. After working
in Inyo County in mining, he returned to Nevada in 1907. From 19091938, he had his own very successful architecture firm. He was also
the only person ever appointed Nevada State Architect (1919). From
what we can find, Brundidge’s building (which was a well-known art
supply store) is not one of the works completed by DeLongchamps.
Thus, DeLongchamps may have either drawn these plans as a proposal
that was never adopted or his connection to this building is previously
unknown. Each sheet measures approx. 38.5” x 25.” Soiling, stains,
and some large rips. Please inspect. From the Gordon Harris Estate.

Hintermeister was an illustrator as well. Father and son often worked

power, and the respect of the world have largely resulted because of
the invincible spirit of Washington, the wisdom of Franklin, Jefferson’s

Possible Land Scrip Scam Offer to
W.J. Harris from Jeremiah Collins
1916 Letter describing a very
interesting land proposition to W.J.
Harris, prominent Nevada banking
figure, from Jeremiah Collins, Land
Attorney and President of The
Collins Land Co. (in Helena). Collins
mentions unsurveyed land estimates
for Western states and says he “has control of the largest block of
Sioux Half Breed scrip in existence...the full equivalent of Valentine.”
He offers that for “anyone desiring to locate several hundred acres
of unsurveyed land... I can make a very attractive proposition.” This
proposition was probably not valid, and thus a “scam.” Collins was
the largest dealer of scrip in the United States. Sioux Half Breed scrip
was issued in 1857 to mixed-blood individuals to extinguish their title
to land originally reserved to them by the 1830 Treaty of Prairie du
Chien. The scrip could be used to locate land anywhere in the public
domain. From the Gordon Harris Estate. Est. $50 ~ $100 FHWAC# 25309

Rhyolite 1905
Certified Copy!
Includes the
Nevada state seal.
The Bullfrog Bank
and Trust Co. was
incorporated in
1905, in the boom and bust mining town of Rhyolite, Nevada, located
in the heart of the Bullfrog Mining District. Although there were other
towns established nearby, including Beatty and Goldfield, Rhyolite
became the main area for financial growth. Rhyolite’s population
peaked at 10,000 in 1907, with electricity and railroads connecting
the town to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, enabling the
banking systems to connect across state lines. The Bullfrog Bank and
Trust Co. took this opportunity to serve the financial needs of the
growing number of residents, becoming one of the two main banks in
Rhyolite, the other being the John S. Cook and Co. Bank. The Bullfrog
Bank did have a second branch in Beatty, Nevada; however, the
Rhyolite location grew more quickly and had a larger financial holding.

Lot # 4496 Nevada, Big Meadows, Lovelock, Vernon The Hans
C., P.N., and L.N. Marker Archive, c 1875-1929 c.1875-1929 This
archive is a classic story of western European immigrants coming to
America and settling in Nevada to make a new life. Instead of mining,
brothers Hans and P.N. Marker, as partners, went into ranching on
Nevada’s deserts and semi-dry valleys around Winnemucca. Marker
bought property at Big Meadows, and at one time routinely ran 600
to 1200 head of cattle. His obituary stated that he made “the desert
blossom like a rose”. Born in Denmark in 1845, Marker came to
America in 1872 and settled in Washoe City, where they started a
wood, lumber and stock business. He moved to Big Meadows in 1875
and immediately planted hundreds or more trees. He and his wife
had 11 children. After time, Marker settled in Big Meadows, later
Lovelocks, where he raised his family. P.N. Marker went to Washoe
Valley, but kept an interest in the business. Hans died in 1904 of
throat cancer. Marker was also active in the nursery business, getting
thousands of trees to the region. Marker’s son, L.N. Marker became
a blacksmith and lumber/hardware dealer in Lovelock. When the
post-1900 mining boom hit the Lovelock area around Seven troughs,
Vernon, Mazuma etc., Marker started a satellite store in Vernon. A
separate lot contains most of the Vernon business records, though
there are about two dozen examples in this archive. The archive
is split into two basic parts: H.C. Marker and L.N. Marker. H.C.
Marker’s papers include old receipts, correspondence and business
correspondence, including ranch land leases, purchases and sales, as
well as cattle sales, tax records, annual sales records, etc. He also ran
several different businesses, including a hay and grain dealership. In
1880 alone, Marker ranched more than 12 sections of land, a sizeable
task in Nevada at the time. His most valuable asset that year were

Lot # 4497 Nevada, Virginia
City Adolph Sutro and the
Railroad c1866 Lot of 6 items
that lead us to a mystery worth
research. 1-2) Two telegraphs from
the Untied State Pacific Telegraph
Company. One from R. H. Stretch
and one from his brother James.
(Stretch was the Nevada state
mineralogist in 1866. He must
have also been working for Sutro.)
They are addressed to Sutro.
They both sound urgent. The first
asks Mr. Sutro to “Send railroad
map tomorrow without fail in
tin case.” What railroad? He is a mineralogist, not an engineer. The
Central Pacific was still stuck in the Sierra’s. The V&T? Not until 1869.
Perhaps it was referring to the San Francisco and Washoe Railroad. It
was an effort to compete with the Central Pacific and would go from
Placerville to Virginia City and on to Austin. I am sure that Sutro would
be very interested in this railroad as it would go right by the front of
his tunnel. 3) The cardboard covered “Sutro Tunnel” book. A classic in
near perfect condition. There are small reddish stains, which I believe
was from the printing process. 4-5) Two iconic Sutro tunnel post
cards. 6) A letter from the Sutro Library in 1963 about their sale of
duplicate Sutro materials. These items came from that sale. Est. $200 ~ $400 FHWAC# 27565

Lumber Check Collection
1872-1897 Seven checks
related to the Carson and
Tahoe Lumber and Fluming
Company, owned and
operated by D.L. Bliss, Henry
Yerington, D.O. Mills, and
J.A. Rigby. Founded in 1872,
it was the largest lumber
operation servicing the
Comstock. The company mostly operated out of Glenbrook, utilizing
a flume system to transport the wood to Carson. They owned up to
50,000 acres of land, two steamers, locomotives, and a narrow gauge
railroad. The company was dissolved in 1947. These checks provide
a nice range for the company, from the early organization (1872) to
the waning of the Comstock and lumber business (1897). All checks
were issued in Virginia City. 1) A pair of checks that may represent the
early consolidation of the company. Both issued Sept. 6, 1872. First is
to the Glenbrook Mill Co. for $10,094.78. Adhesive revenue, cut cancel,
and light soiling. The second is issued to Yerington Bliss & Co. for
$21,005.41. Cut cancel and soiling. Both signed Carson Lumber a/c
for Bliss. 2) 1873 check issued to D.W. Parkhurst for $828.28. Signed
by Bliss for Carson Lumber. Cut cancel, adhesive revenue and folds. 3)
Three 1878 Carson and Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. checks, RN-G,
all signed by Bliss. 4) An 1897 Savage Mining Co. check issued to the

to Chief of Police in Virginia City appears in a December 26, 1909 issue
of the Nevada State Journal underneath the headline “Shake-up in
Storey County.” He replaced Dan O’Hagan as Chief of Police and of the
Fire Department. It is unclear how long he held this post, though he
is referenced as “Chief McGuigan of the Divide” in a Sept. 28,1913 NSJ
article. By 1918, he has left the police force and gone back into mining:
his World War I registration card lists him as a miner for the Ontario
Silver Mining Co. in Park City, Utah, though his wife is still in Gold Hill.
By 1920, he listed in the census as a “quartz miner,” with 3 sons and
2 daughters. McGuigan left the Comstock in 1925 for Reno. By 1930,
he had returned to police work, this time in Reno (along with two of
his sons). Charles Arthur McGuigan, Comstock miner and police chief,
died on Dec. 3, 1952 in Reno after battling a “long illness.”

Illinois in 1876, Charles Arthur McGuigan developed deep Nevada
roots when he arrived to the Comstock. He married Clara Kenny in
Gold Hill on April 22, 1897. Kenny grew-up on the Comstock and her
father was a blacksmith for some of the leading mines. On the 1900
census, Charles is listed as a teamster in Gold Hill. In 1903, he appears
on the Mardi Gras committee for the Comstock Carnival in Virginia
City. At some point he became involved in mining, as evidenced by the
1909 issue of Miner’s Magazine which lists him as the Gold Hill union
chapter president for the Western Federation of Miners. His promotion

& Co., Printers, Virginia. Great vignette of
fire wagon. Each measures 4.25” x 13” with
stub. Diagonal crease running through right
side and light toning. The Young America
Engine Co. No. 2 was organized in 1861 with Jacob Young as the
foreman. As this was one of a handful of fire companies, there was
fierce competition. Sometimes, this competition got out of control.
Companies rushed to a fire in 1863 which turned into a riot. The end
result was a member of Young America Engine Company being shot
and killed by an Assistant Chief of the Virginia City Fire Department. In
1872, the company purchased the first steam fire engine in Nevada, a
Silsby, housing it in a new, one-story building with a basement on this
site, next to the Wells Fargo Building. They were one of only two fire
companies to survive the great fire of 1875. They disbanded in 1877.
