Honor, integrity, pride, fellowship – The real Flight Crew! THE rEAL WORD Official Newsletter of The Silver Falcons Volume 4 Number 4 Fall, 2000 Newlyweds Captain Gil and Mrs. Gaye Gilbert at Convention banquet We have just returned from the extremely enjoyable Silver Falcon Convention in Las Vegas. If you were not one of the almost 200 folks attending then you missed a good one!! Convention Chairman Ray Woolfolk, his wife, Connie, and able assistant Margaret Zimlich, provided us with a good time from the moment we got there Tuesday until we concluded noonish on Friday. The practically nonstop Welcome Party commenced in our 18th floor doublewide Hospitality Room on Tuesday (this place was open just about 24 hours a day except for the Thursday night Banquet) and was followed by our annual "Bo Thomas Memorial Golf Tournament" on Wednesday (with the Low Gross winner having his name engraved on the "Piontek Cup"). We had 20 swingers and below are the "winners".. It is incorporated and registered as a non profit organization in the State of Georgia. The Silver Falcons is also registered as a tax exempt organization with the IRS. Dues are $25 per year for a Charter member and $10 per year for an Auxiliary member. A life membership may be purchased for $500 for a Charter member and $200 for an Auxiliary member. Dues and all correspondence should be Convention 2000 is over and done. With more than 170 people attending, it was by far the biggest and best we have ever had. Ray and Connie Woolfolk, ably assisted by Margaret Zimlich, put together a program that was packed with events and enjoyed by everyone that attended. Gil Gilbert handled our fifty-fifty ticket sales after a tutorial by Gary Deskin, who was unable to attend, and raised over a thousand dollars which allowed us to give five hundred dollars in prizes. In his spare time Gil also married his fiancé Gaye and used our banquet as a free reception (We are REALLY dealing with PILOTS here!). We felt it only proper that we provide him with a wedding cake and the evening was brought to a pleasant close as they cut the cake and shared it with the group! There were twenty-three retirement posters and the program was so well received that it will be an annual event. My wife won $1000 on the slots! It looks like our next convention will be in Indianapolis with Jim Cobb and Lee Carey hosting. The tentative location is the Adams Mark Hotel and the dates are October 16, 17, and 18. Plan your time off now! The following year will be in San Antonio and will be hosted by Lil and Bob Ayars. The theme for next year will be the Indy 500, of course, and Lee thinks he can have Indy drivers as guest speakers. More on this as things progress. Remember, every convention we have had has been a rousing success and each one has been better than the last. If there is one thing this group knows how to do it's party, party, party! Keep checking the web site and we'll add updates as we receive them. My wife won $1000 on the slots! As proud as I am of my bride, Curtis McBarnette won $2000 on the slots! Don't forget the Atlanta Christmas Dinner on December 15. If you would like to attend, call Jim Holder for information. Our guest speaker will be Marine General Ray Davis, Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It will be at the Victorian House Restaurant in Conyers just as it was last year. This is an excellent facility and the food is outstanding! Sign up now so that we can make plans to 2 reserve a room! Although this event is sponsored by The Silver Falcons, not just Falcons are welcome. NonMembers, prospective members, and friends are welcome also. The Southside Breakfast Group is no longer meeting as Shoney's in Fayetteville (Thank God!). Our new meeting place is Melear's Barbeque in Fayetteville about a mile further down the road and on the opposite side. As always, we meet every Friday morning at nine A.M. Please note our new mailing address. Both boxes will be available for the next few months, but the switch should be complete by the first of the year. Retired Delta Captain Roscoe McMillan was inducted as an Honorary Member at the business meeting by acclimation. A great Pilot, a great man, and a true friend to the Eastern Pilots! Welcome aboard, Roscoe! If you have the opportunity to thank Harry McLaughlin for his dedicated service over the past few years publishing our newsletter, please do so. Without Harry and his efforts we would never have been able to reach as many people as we have. My personal thanks, Harry, you did a helluva job! In closing, MY WIFE WON $1000 ON THE SLOTS (and I lost $500)! Dick Borrelli, President Convention Highlights (Cont’d from page 1) Additionally this year George C. Smith was awarded a Golf Shirt as some type of Honorarium,,, However no one could quite figure out exactly what he did to deserve it! Our Business Meeting and Luncheon were on Thursday. While this was ongoing the Companion Luncheon took place followed by a Seminar on Gambling Techniques (provided by the Imperial Palace Hotel). There is no evidence that this resulted in any winnings by the group as the only known winner, Curtis McBarnette, had his successes (note plural!) prior to the Seminar. It is rumored that he will be a major Sponsor at the Convention next year! Our Banquet was Thursday evening commencing with a Cocktail Party in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel. President Borrelli opened the festivities on a somber note by reading the names of those who have "Flown West for their Final Check-Ride".. The offering of a Toast by Jack Blonsick followed this emotional moment as he proposed "To the Fallen Falcons!"… by President Dick Borrelli. A Standing Ovation quickly ensued! Dick Borrelli read the names of those Silver Falconers who are known to have been promoted to their first Captaincy since the last Convention. These were: Capt. Jim Haas Capt. Jack Henry Capt. Cal Lancaster Capt. Paul Mosher Capt. Ron Reihel Capt. Tom Thomas Capt. Tommy Thompson United Airborne Express United United United United Federal Express And, as a result of a phone call a few hours earlier, he was able to add the name of our Newest Captain, Byron Ellis, who had passed his Check ride that very day at FEDEX! The Banquet actually, at some point, turned into an impromptu Wedding Party also. As Gil Gilbert and his lovely lady, Gaye Vasten, were married earlier in the day. While this was a great surprise to us, it had actually been in the planning for some time. Upon learning of this happy event, Connie Woolfolk ordered a beautiful Wedding Cake, which served as an additional dessert for our Dinner! After this excellent Dinner a former Member of the Air Force Thunderbirds, Major Costa Tzavaras, treated us to an inspirational address. Major Tzavaras is presently serving as a pilot in the 414th Combat Training Squadron at Nellis AFB. The Aggressor Force flies F-16 Fighters and use the paint scheme and tactics of the MIG-29 "Fulcrum" and SU27 "Flanker" as flown by pilots of the Former Soviet Union. These training exercises are commonly known as "Red Flag" and teach our newest pilots how to cope with these planes and tactics, which they may someday face. Following his address he showed us an extremely informative and interesting 30-minute tape on the Thunderbirds. This tape, with a sound track similar to the movie "Top Gun", was compiled from over 80 hours of taped events and had some heart stopping scenes! Then Major Tzavaras conducted a very candid (he said he would take ALL questions and he certainly did!!) Q and A session!!!!!! rEAL Pilots South Luncheon now at Melears Barbeque Newnan, GA Dick Nellis then provided us with a brief history of why Delta Captain Roscoe McMillan had been made an Honorary Member at the Business Meeting. At this time Roscoe was presented with a Plaque, honoring him as such, 3 SILVER FALCONS CONVENTION 2000, MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETING LAS VEGAS, NV OCTOBER 19, 2000 President Dick Borrelli called the meeting to order promptly at 9 AM. Former Eastern Flight Attendants Margaret Zimlich and Kitty Drawdy then promptly interrupted the meeting. They provided (in original uniform) a humorous Coffee Service using an original Eastern Serving Cart. which includes 56 Flight Attendant members. So the Silver Falcons continue to grow! -He reported that the newly elected Members of the BOD, Bob Shipner and Ray Woolfolk, would join current members Dick Borrelli and Roy Wren along with newly appointed Stu Hughes, in the Officer Election later in the Meeting. -Dick stated that he hoped we could upgrade our Newsletter to more of a magazine format. Also it is hoped that some folks will step forward and become regional contributors, like Ruthann Langrell (DEN/Flight Attendants) and J. Ron Wheeler (IND). This would only entail penning a short column four times a year. Dick then recognized Convention Chairman Ray Woolfolk, who received a round of applause for his (and wife Connie and Margaret Zimlich’s) efforts in providing us with such a great Convention. The Membership then moved to the Election of Officers for 2001 and was advised that the BOD had met and all agreed to serve in the following Offices. President Vice President Secretary Director at Large Director at Large After order was restored Dick then introduced the newly constituted Board of Directors (BOD). He announced that George Zupko had been appointed VP of Flt Ops for TMA and as such would not be able to continue to serve on the Silver Falcons BOD. Therefore, in accordance with the Bylaws, Jim Holder became the Vice President, Gary Deskin became the Secretary and Stu Hughes was appointed as a Director to serve out George’s term of Office (which runs thru 2001). Seated at the head table were Directors Roy Wren and Stu Hughes, Vice President Jim Holder and, of course, President Dick Borrelli. Dick continued his opening remarks: -We have lost several sponsors and at the present only have Joe Piontek (Morgan Stanley) and Pat Broderick (Smith Barney). Also La Feela at reduced contribution. We had not planned to lose Donna Reilley (Keebler Cookies) but she was not able to attend due to the death of Mel Brent. Dick stated that the Convention, per the Bylaws, was required to be self-sustaining and could not use Dues money, so it would be likely that the cost of next year’s Convention would go up approximately $20. -He pointed out that at the last Convention we had 450 members but now we have a total membership of 520, Dick Borrelli Ray Woolfolk Stu Hughes Roy Wren Bob Shipner Upon motion by George Smith, with second by Jim Furlong, the above Slate of Officers was elected unanimously. Joe Zito, our Finance Officer, reported on his procedures and our investments. Most importantly he stated that our Bottom Line is strong. Webmaster Jerry Frost advised that he recently upgraded our Website and that it is running smoother and faster. He asked that the Members send him more photos for our Nostalgia and Fleet sections. He can handle Scanned Attachments, of course, but will welcome (and return) any slides or photos mailed to him. His EM and Snail Mail addresses are on the Webpage at www.silverfalcons.com. EM Person Jim Holder reported that the Silver Falcon World Wide (WW) EM List is now approaching 300 members. And that after going out of Office 12/31/00 he would remain on as the Keeper of The List. Again PLEASE advise us of any EM address changes. Also, unless someone else volunteered, he would continue writing the Silver Falcon column for the EARA Newsletter. Dick stated that the Silver Falcons had contracted with Beate Fradenburg, wife of Silver Falconer Jerry Fradenburg, to prepare Last Trip Posters for those attending Members who had not received one from Eastern or their follow-on airline. The Silver Falcons, as a tribute, paid for 4 these posters. However a donation to the Silver Falcon Flower Fund, in an equal amount, while not required, would certainly be appreciated. He reminded the Members to sign these posters, which were on display at the various functions. At this time, in response to a Call for Additional Agenda Items, Dick Nellis submitted “Delta Captain Roscoe McMillan”. Also added by Bob Thomas was the “Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation” (EPRF). Both of these items were placed in New Business. At this time Jim Holder more or less read the 1999 Business Meeting Minutes. These were unanimously approved, without correction, upon motion by Bob Drawdy with second by Gil Gilbert. Under Old Business the Members discussed the proposal set forth last year by Jack Blonsick regarding establishing a Tax Exempt Fund, which could be used to aid the education of certain Members. Barney Oberempt then moved to table this matter until next year, with second by Roscoe Trivett. It is the understanding of the group that Jack and Joe Zito will develop this program in the interim. Under New Business Dick Nellis then made a presentation concerning Honorary Membership and, with second by Chuck Taliaferro, introduced the below Resolution. “WHEREAS During the latter days of the Eastern Strike and it's aftermath, especially as time marched on and our supporters drifted away, one person remained steadfast at our side, shining like a beacon in our darkest night, and WHEREAS This person, Delta Airlines Captain Roscoe McMillan, clearly never abandoned us, nay, on the contrary, he doubled and redoubled his efforts to rally the pilots of his Airline to our cause thus placing himself at odds with Delta Management and most of the Delta pilots, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the Silver Falcons, in convention today, October 19, 2000 do hereby and with deep appreciation acknowledge Captain McMillan's efforts on our behalf, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That today Captain Roscoe McMillan is hereby made an Honorary Member of the Silver Falcons!” Virgil Tedder then moved to have the above Resolution passed by Acclamation. Upon second by Jack Henry, an immediate unanimous vote was counted! Also under New Business, Bob Thomas addressed his added Agenda Item and reviewed the past many good works the EPRF has done in helping some of our Retirees who were forced to leave many years ago, well before the Retirement Plans that we currently enjoy were established or before they had the time to contribute sufficient funds to allow them to have a minimum standard of living. He then further led the group into a discussion of the advisability of either a donation by the Silver Falcons or individual members into this worthy Foundation. After a long discussion by many Members and after several ideas were put forth, the following Resolution was proposed by Sandy McCulloh and seconded by Jim Fullerton. “Whereas the Silver Falcons endorse the principle of the Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation, we therefore recommend that the Silver Falcons contribute individually to the Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation” After further discussion this motion passed unanimously. At this time the Membership went into a General Discussion. Along with this discussion President Borrelli auctioned off two children’s games donated by Fen Lind. The funds from this auction went into the Flower Fund. Also the 2001 Convention Site and date were discussed but at this writing no final determination has been made on either matter. At 11:45 AM, upon motion by George Smith, and second by Tommy Mosher, the Business Meeting was adjourned and the Members retired to the Business Meeting Luncheon, which was provided by Sponsor Joe Piontek. Respectively Submitted, Jim Holder, Vice President October 23, 2000 ATLANTA CHRISTMAS DINNER December 15th Victorian House Restaurant Conyers, Georgia Convention 2001 I have tentatively booked the 2001 S.F. convention into the Adams Mark Hotel at the INDY airport. The dates are October 16 for early check in and the golfers. October 17, 18 for the convention dates. The room rate is $89 for double occupancy. The hotel will forward a contract for your review and approval. The person I have been dealing with is Ronda Taggart. Her phone number is 317-381-6127 Lee Carey 5 Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation At the annual business meeting the membership voted to recommend that individual members contribute to the Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation. This fund was established to assist those pilots who retired years ago with minimum retirement benefits. Some of these people receive less than $600 a month and minimal Social Security. There are 9 people still receiving aid and they range in age from 72 to 90. The Bylaws state that only former EAL pilots and their widows are eligible for this assistance and the foundation is restricted to former EAL pilots. A former EAL pilot is defined as a pilot that was employed as a pilot for EAL prior to Jan 1, 1989. Captain Basil Willis Captain Basil Willis, born August 20, 1938, passed away recently as he observed a beautiful sunset while participating in a cross-country bicycle ride for charity. As always, he was participating in life to the fullest. After a twenty seven year career as an Eastern Pilot, Basil put aviation behind him and, with his wife Bonnie, cruised the world in a sixty foot sailboat, visiting South America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, Alaska, and Hawaii. He and Bonnie had recently settled in Punta Gorda, Florida. One of the most frequent requests received by The Falcons was "I'd like to get in touch with Basil. Where is he now?". RIP, Basil! Letters Checks can be mailed to: Letter from Mrs. Carole Reynolds: Eastern Pilots Retirement Foundation 3404 American Drive, Apt. 1305 Lago Vista, TX, 78645 [512] 267-3875 Obituaries Captain Mel Brent Captain Mel Brent, born April 25, 1940, died in a light plane accident on September 17, 2000 with his brother Dick. After serving as a Naval Aviator, Mel was an Eastern Pilot for twenty one years. He was a well liked and respected member of our aviation community as well as a loyal Silver Falcon. After participating in our rejection of Frank Lorenzo, Mel went on to have a full and rewarding career with United Airlines, retiring recently as a Boeing 737 Captain. Mel is survived by his Mother, Betty, his brother Elwood and his three children, Mary, Tom, and Scott, as well as his loving companion and best friend Donna Reilly. RIP, Mel! Captain Don Reynolds Captain Don Reynolds lost a valiant battle with heart disease in September of this year. Don was born October 9, 1935 and served with Eastern for twenty three years before taking medical retirement in 1989. He was one of the first and strongest supporters of The Silver Falcons and perhaps his comments on his membership application best describe the level of his dedication. "I walked the line in SAT and IAH with perhaps the best Pilots and Men & Women of integrity and courage on this planet. In the presence of scabs I burp, pass wind, and move out smartly! I am honored to be invited to join!" Don is survived by his loving wife Carole. RIP, Don! Dear Silver Falcons, My days are filled with grief. My husband and best friend of 33 years will be greatly missed. I cannot express in words my gratitude for the wonderful support and love you, "The Real Eastern Pilots" and your families have extended to me throughout this very sad time. Don and I always treasured our Eastern Friends and considered them family! It was so nice to see so many of you attend Don's memorial. Those of you who called or EMailed are helping me get through this very difficult time. From the bottom of my heart I thank each of you. I believe Don is smiling down on each of you for your efforts in helping me get through all of this. God bless you all! Carole Reynolds Letter from Mrs. Bonnie Willis: Dear Silver Falcons, Thank you so much for your donation to Make A Wish Foundation in Basil's memory. Please also thank The REAL Atlanta Pilots for me The family has received many personal notes from people in the REAL Eastern Family and they have offered so much comfort. It makes me so proud to be a member of a true family--REAL Eastern People! Bonnie Willis and sons Basil III and Jeff 6 Letter from Anne Yarnell: Young American Education Foundation 311 Steele St. Denver, CO 80206 Dear Silver Falcons, Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers, I sincerely want to thank you for all your caring and loving encouragement since my beloved Frank went home to be with our Lord Jesus! Being a Chemo-hospice RN, I truly give thanks for your gift to The Southwest Christian Hospice. Please extend my heart's appreciation and love to all The Silver Falcons! In His Love, Anne Yarnell Letter from Donna Reilly: Dear Silver Falcons, Thanks so much for everything you have done. I loved Mel and wonder how my life will go on without seeing his smiling face! Please pass on my sincere appreciation to everyone in The Silver Falcons. I'm sorry we won't be at the convention, Mel was so looking forward to seeing everyone and telling more jokes. (This for Jim Holder) Jim, Mel always felt bad that you had to be the person to pass on the terrible news that someone had died. I I just didn't think I would see Mel's name ….. He was not only my lover, but more importantly, my BEST FRIEND! He will be in my heart forever! Donna Reilly Letter from Tom Brent: Dear Silver Falcons. On behalf of my family, I would like to sincerely thank you so much for your unwavering support during this ordeal. It is truly easier to get through each day knowing there are so many people thinking of us. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to The Young American Education Foundation. The foundation runs the only bank in the world exclusively for people under the age of 22. Founded in 1987, it provides youths with hands on opportunity to learn about banking and financial skills. The foundation has also expanded to include educational programs through AmeriTowne, which teaches children about free enterprise, government, legal systems, etc. My Dad knew the president of the bank and helped build the facades for AmeriTowne and also volunteered his time for many other projects. The address follows: Tom Brent On The Line in 2000 This November will start my 33rd year as a Flight Attendant and will start my 9th year with United Airlines. I can't say they have been my best years, but it has been, and remains, my career of choice. I am very grateful that I could continue to do the same type of work I have loved for so long. It seems that I am still adjusting to the ways of a company that is trying and wants to be first class. I always felt at Eastern I was among a very special group and that we were first class - that we were people that were hired to serve their customers with grace and humor and did so with dignity. I can't say that this is always the case at United. I sometimes wonder how I was hired. It's very interesting about the group of people who have come from Eastern. We are invariably known when we get on an aircraft. The pilots always ask where we come from. They know that we approach the job in a different manner. I am always so proud to say I was with Eastern Airlines and they are always envious of our history and the respect we had for one another. Also, during the nine years at United we have had a lot of influence on the nature of our job. There was no trading for the pilots and the F/A's only had one trade a month. There was no purser program and we had the senior program developed 20 years ago. Our computer system was still ahead of what United is using today for the F/A's. Many of the changes that have developed as of this day have been brought to United because of the efforts of the Eastern people who know how to bring superior service to the public. Many of the contract changes have come about because Eastern people care about the quality of our work place. I am always proud to see my Eastern family making a difference where I work. When you get on a flight with one of the Eastern Family your are going to see F/A's who care and make a difference, even in the way we look. Although many feel that the F/A's job is not always the same quality that it was in the past, we, the rank and file from years gone by are still maintaining the same high standards of service that we maintained in the past. I am proud to say that my standards of excellences were established at Eastern! Margaret Zimlich 7 Convention 2000 Photos 8 9 10 11 12 13 JOB OFFERS AIR, INC.
