along Siesta Beach. Lifeguards are

SIESTA KEY. Siesta Key is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets,
easy-going waves, and gorgeous,
crystal white sand. The sand is
99% pure quartz, soft and cool to
the feet. Among the many awards
it has earned are “The Whitest,
Finest Beach Sand in the World”
(The Great International White
Sand Challenge, 1987), “The Best
Sand Beach in America” (The Travel
Channel, 2015) and the best beach
in America (Dr. Beach, 2011).
Walking along, or swimming and
playing in the Gulf of Mexico or
merely basking in the tropical sun is
enough fun for many folks. Others
are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many
amenities, which include tennis and
volleyball courts, shaded playground
and picnic/barbecue areas and convenient concession stands. Shallow
water near the shoreline and yearround lifeguard protection make it
a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help
special needs visitors cross the sand.

CRESCENT BEACH. Crescent Beach
offers the same lush, white sands,
azure waters and stunning sunsets,
but it is relatively secluded and
quiet, because it has only one public
access road. Located just south of
Siesta Beach, the scene here tends
to be more peaceful and private.
At the southern tip of this beach is
Point of Rocks — a lovely snorkeling and diving area rich with coral
rock formations as well as colorful

the southern tip of Siesta Key and

crowds. The beach has picnic areas,
a playground, volleyball court and
horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat
launch, and fishing is permitted in
the adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. This
is a great location for paddle-board18

are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local nightspots just
a short drive away.
Turtle Beach is a narrow beach
with a somewhat steeper incline.
The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for
beachcombers and shell collectors.
Many find petrified shark teeth to
take home and treasure — especially after a storm.
Campground Information
From sunrise to sunset, there’s
nothing quite like the experience of
camping on a Florida beach. Turtle
Beach Campground, located on
Siesta Key, offers one of the few
remaining opportunities to park a
recreational vehicle or pitch a tent
near the Gulf of Mexico and wake
up the next morning under the
Florida sun. The park features 40
sites for camping, with areas for
both RVs and tents. Electricity and
cable TV hookups are available.
Popular activities include relaxing
on the beach, swimming, kayaking,
canoeing and browsing through a
variety of shops. Some of the finest
restaurants on Florida’s Gulf Coast
are within walking distance or just a

Siesta Key is nestled between the Gulf
of Mexico, the Intracoastal Waterway,
Sarasota Bay and Roberts Bay. Varying
water, temperatures and depths form
habitats that nurture an amazing variety of fish species. While on a single
fishing trip, you may explore estuaries,
mangroves and reefs.
Note: An estuary is where river water
meets sea water. This creates a system of mixed salt and fresh water and
encourages productive fish habitats.
Many of Florida’s recreational fish and
shellfish spend part of their lives in
these sheltered areas. Estuaries are
considered “cradles of the ocean.”
There’s more than one way to catch
a fish on Siesta Key: surf casting, spin
or fly fishing, shore fishing, wading
the grass flats and even bridge
fishing. Charter and cruise boat
fishing with or without a captain or
guide is probably the most popular
island sport. You can find every type
of water craft and all the fishing gear
you need on the Key.
