MANASOTA TRACK CLUB
Part 1
MTC History
By Guy Ealey
Ever wonder where the MTC
name came from? Today, we are a
group of runners, most of whom
seldom run or race on a track. An
exception is J.C. Shenk, who still
competes in National and State
Track meets running the quarter
mile in the 70 -74 age group.
J.C. Shenk and his wife Jewel
were among a list of runners who
entered the Florida State Masters
Track and Field Championships
on March 22, 1975, calling themselves the
“Manasota Track Club”. The list included Bill
O’Brien, J.C. and Jewel Shenk, Guy and Melanie Pascal, John and Denny (female) Beith,
and Mike MacLeod. Among the trophies
was one to be given to the winning masters
team. Bill O’Brien and Shenk recognized the
opportunity to win it all, that was the day the
MTC was born. Kent Wiley wrote in his “A Little
MTC Lore I”, “Back in those days, few women
entered such an event. Because of that, Jewel,
Melanie and Denny entered multiple events
and piled up the points. After the first day of
the two-day event, MTC was in second place,
just behind the St. Pete T & F Club. O’Brien,
Shenk and company decided to return to
Bradenton and Sarasota that night and recruit.
They added Nancy Carson and Doris Wilson,
returned the next day and won the championship, and the next seven Florida State Masters
Track and Field Championships in a row.
In just a couple months, the MTC will celebrate 40 years of existence, and it is exciting
to note that Bill O’Brien, J.C. and Jewel Shenk,
and Nancy Carson are still active members.
How many organizations of this type have
such a legacy? We must give a sincere note
of thanks to Kent Wiley, self appointed Club
Historian, for sharing the recorded
history of the MTC. Kent provided
the following list of names from
the earliest known printed roster of
the MTC, dated January 14, 1980:
( * indicates pioneer members at
founding of MTC March 22, 1975)
Nancy Carson*, Tom, Sandy and
Matt Depenbrock, Holt Fisher, Jay
and Marlyn Jaffe, Alec Jerrems, Dan
and Tootie Kennedy, Marty McNamara, Kent and Ann Morgan, Mary
Berdell Murphy, Bill O’Brien*, Bob
Parnes, Randy Peachey, Amy Petz,
Richard and Monique Quevillon, Leah Roberts
McElroy, Walt Rothenbach, J.C. and Jewel
Shenk*, Walter White, Kent Wiley, Paul Wilson,
Ray and Mary Jane Zuknick. Kent Wiley says
there could be others who should be on this
list.
The first formal meeting of the MTC was
May 6, 1975, when Bill O’Brien was elected
President, John Beith Vice-President, J.C.
Shenk Treasurer and Jewel Shenk Secretary.
After the meeting was duly adjourned, the
champagne that accompanied the large
trophy, was opened!
On December 4, 1979, Articles of Incorporation of the Manasota Track Club were introduced by member attorney Robert Widman
and signed by Bill O’Brien, President;
Dr. Charles Hill, Vice-President; Dr. Jay Jaffe,
Secretary; and J.C. Shenk, Treasurer. The
articles were amended on October 16, 1980 to
require in the event of dissolution of the MTC,
any funds left in the treasury shall be donated
to the Sarasota YMCA.
In ensuing months, we will take advantage
of Kent Wiley’s record of the rich history of the
MTC to share more of what has made the MTC
the strong organization that we know today.

By Dick Smothers
I love 20 Minutes to Fitness... here's why.
I get a special joy from the fact that I'm doing something for myself that I know is helping me
become a stronger, more fit, 75+ year old.
In 2011, I embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the west coast and
points in between and I couldn't keep up my workout program. I didn't pick it up again until
last year. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get
it back... I was amazed!
With every session I'm getting stronger. My stronger body makes my life easier and
more enjoyable.
My trainer is an excellent coach and, I think accepts the fact that I like to talk while I'm
working out, but that's just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth.
I'll ask her things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time?
How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding... I don't think I can do
anymore!” She'll say, “Yes you can, try one more.” I try, I do one more and it is not easy,
but quite often I find enough strength to do another one after that.
That's what it’s all about. That's the genius of this program. I exhaust my muscle groups
with a high weight for my ability and a low number of slow repetitions... once a week. I don't
have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based,
scientifically proven training program performed on unique specialized equipment with
extremely knowledgeable coaches in a semi-private non-gym environment.
I bike, swim, stand up paddle-board, dance, yoga, meditate, take naps and more. I live with a
great sense of gratitude of the blessing God has given me. I don't take anything for granted,
including my muscles.
20 Minutes Once a Week!
I first came to 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2008 and it was nothing I had ever experienced in my
life. I had been around gyms for many years and I was quite aware of all sorts of workout
philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about twenty minutes? This I had to see.
I saw it and I'm still here.
Since I added “20 Minutes to Fitness” to my life, I'm doing just fine, thank you!!!!!

MANASOTA TRACK CLUB
Community Involvement
Submitted by Tom Flanagan
For the most part because of sound fiscal policies, the MTC has been
able to achieve a record amount of giving back to our local community
during the past calendar year. This has always been part of our charter
to promote running in our community.
Having two back-to-back incredibly successful BBR events has
allowed the MTC board to be very generous whenever a request for
funding (RFF) comes before them from one our club members. Not all
RFF’s get approved. However if the request comes from a reliable and
knowledgeable club member it helps the board tremendously in their
decision-making.
As you can see there are 13 local running programs that we provide
some funding to. Additionally, $12,200 in college scholarships was
granted this past May. Since its inception 8 years ago, our MTC College
Scholarship program has been able to provide an impressive total of
$50,350 in scholarships to local high school runners.
The positive impact of our funding can be visibly seen at any local
running event where groups of school age runners are all dressed alike
in tee-shirts sporting the MTC logo. If possible, we request that the programs we financially support brand their apparel with a small MTC logo.
At some point, we might form a “Grant Committee” to screen
financial requests and make recommendations to the Board. For now,
however, the board discusses each request in an open format at their
regularly scheduled meetings and then votes on any specific amounts
to be gifted. According to board member Tom Flanagan, some of his
best moments serving on the MTC board have been when they voted
to approve funding to help get a new running program started in our
community. “Brentwood and Gocio elementary school programs come
to mind. It is one of the reasons I continue to be an MTC volunteer and
passionate supporter,” says Flanagan.

Picnic Island Adventure Run
This time it was no picnic!
Submitted by Rae Ann Darling Reed
O
ne of my all-time favorite races is
the Picnic Island Adventure Run
in Tampa, Florida. It is actually a
series of three races that take place once
a month on Friday nights in May, June,
and July. Hot and humid do not begin to
describe the weather at 6:45 p.m. on the
small island in Tampa Bay under a cloudless summer sky. So once you’ve accepted
the weather factor, you’re ready for the
real challenge.
This adventure run is unique and
definitely not one of those mud runs or
extreme obstacle races where you sign
away your life in a waiver. I don’t do dangerous races like that. Picnic
Island is challenging, don’t get me wrong, but it is definitely more
welcoming to all ages and abilities who are seeking adventure. The
obstacles are minor; you crawl under a cargo net on your knees over
sand, run through six big, inflated tubes, and then hurdle, jump, walk,
or crawl over one hurdle. The rest of the run is on the beach, grassy areas with hills, a couple of very small sections over pavement, and quite
a bit through mangroves. Oh the mangroves! You never know what
to expect until you get there. This July 18th, high tide was coming
in so the water through the mangroves was pretty deep, very warm,
and muddy. Yes, a little bit of “ick” factor, especially if you go splashing
through like I did and it hits you in the face.
I always sign up for the three race series but this year I was unable
to race the May and June races due to my post Boston Marathon rest
period and rehabbing an injury. I knew I was not in top shape, but was
very excited to race Picnic Island as well as
I could. From the gun, I was out of breath
and knew I would be. I was just trying to
hold on to my spot in the top five overall
women as we approached the last section
of “non-trails” before the toughest part
of the course. I say “non-trails” because
they are not trails; they are overgrown
areas of vegetation that someone walked
through when setting up the course and
stomped down a single track area for us
to squeeze through. I was almost through
this section, which is my least favorite of
the course, and I tripped. I had an out of
body experience. I saw myself floating
down towards the ground, almost as if in
slow motion. As soon as my knees hit the rocks at the bottom of the
slight downhill I popped up, probably cursed (can’t remember now),
and quickly ran off.
I attacked the five or six steep hills that zigzag up and down from
the beach because I was so shocked that I fell and a bit embarrassed.
But I wasn’t feeling any pain yet so I finished strong and ended up
placing third overall and won Masters. Once I hosed off my legs to
assess the damage, then the pain kicked in. So this one was no picnic
but even now, two weeks after the event, my knees are still scraped,
bruised, and recovering but I cannot wait until next summer when I
can run all three Picnic Island Adventure Runs!

The hot spot - What’s HOT for runners
“New from The Running Event”
during any workout!
By Nancy Flanagan
“TRE” – No, it is not a large woody trunk with
leaves…..it is the largest running conference and
trade show in the country and it is held in Austin,
Texas the first week of December every year. This
event was started by a guy named Mark Sullivan and
it has quickly become THE event for run specialty
stores to send their key personnel to every year
since its inception. The event is held in the Austin
Conference Center and it includes a number of
speaker sessions and breakout sessions the first few
days followed by a massive expo with run specialty
vendors showing their latest and greatest offerings
from shoes to apparel to accessories and services. It
is an overwhelming display of all things run-related
and it seems to get bigger every year.
It’s made of soft, durable, wickable Lycra fabric
that wraps around your hand allowing you to use
both sides of your Handana hand to wipe sweat
from your eyes, nose, neck or forehead. Your hand
and fingers are completely free to keep your stride
smooth, steer your bike or to open snacks and
water bottles.
Handana is perfect for athletes of any level and
works for a variety of sports. Use Handana while
running, riding your bike, doing yoga or playing
tennis.
There are lots of fun activities interspersed in the
show, including a Sunrise Trail Run, the Indie 5K Run,
and the 50 Best running Stores in America Awards
Banquet. New this year at the Expo was a Treadmill
Challenge sponsored by ASICS. In their very large
expo area, called ASICS Treadmill Stadium, they had
a treadmill set up along with a large digital display
clock. The goal was to get folks to take the “Ryan Hall Challenge”.
You had to climb into a specially designed harness hanging over the
treadmill and then try and maintain the marathon pace of Ryan Hall
for as long as possible. The prize? A ticket to Paris, France! The winning time? An amazing time of 18:08 minutes at a 4:45 pace!!!! It was
fun to watch…
A couple of fun new items that I found that are now available at
Fleet Feet Sarasota are:

Manasota track club Membership Waiver: I know that running and volunteering to work in club races are potentially hazardous activities. I should not enter and run in club activities unless I am medically
able and properly trained. I agree to abide by any decision of a race official relative to my ability to safely complete a run. I assume all risks associated with running and volunteering to work in club races including, but not
limited to: falls, contact with other participants, the effects of weather, including high heat and/or humidity, the conditions of the road and traffic on the course, all such risks being known to me and appreciated by me.
Having read this waiver and knowing these facts, and in consideration of your acceptance of my application for membership, I, for myself and anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release the Manasota Track Club
and all sponsors, their representatives and successors from all claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in these club activities even thought that liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on
the part of the persons named in this waiver. I grant permission to all the foregoing to use any photographs, motion pictures, recordings or any other record of an event for any legitimate purpose.
