Director's Note In the early 1970’s, Paramount executives, Michael Eisner and Tom Miller had a long delay during a snowstorm at a New York airport. While they watched snow flakes fall, they discussed doing a family show along the lines of a sitcom that took place in the 1930’s about a Norwegian family with a son named Lars. It was called I Remember Momma. They asked me to do my own version. I love Norwegians, but I grew up as an Italian in the Bronx with very few guys named Lars. So, I asked to set it in the 1950’s with guys named Richie, Potsie and Ralph. They said fine, but have it take place in the city of Milwaukee where Tom Miller grew up. Thus, I created and wrote a pilot called New Family in Town. Nobody bought it, so it went to the graveyard of unsold pilots, the series Love American Style. And that was that. Then the sitcom gods smiled on us. A Broadway show, Grease, premiered and a George Lucas film called American Graffiti came out. In typical TV derivative thinking, some executive said, we also have a show about the 1950’s. So they hired me again and I did another pilot, only this time we called it Happy Days and I created another character, ‘Arthur Fonzarelli’. The streetwise ‘Fonzie’ and the very whitebread ‘Cunninghams’ were a perfect match. The show debuted on ABC in 1974 and ran for 11 seasons, produced by Tom Miller, Eddie Milkis and Bob Boyett. Then it ran all over again in reruns. It’s been on some channel, somewhere for 30 years. So, now I think it’s time to introduce Happy Days to a new generation of kids and parents and this time I’m launching it as a musical with Paul Williams. Why a musical? It’s quite simple: music was the heart and soul of the sitcom and what better way to bring the series to life again than on the stage? With music as its touchstone, Happy Days was a series about friendship, love, family and loyalty. Those themes were important in our past and even more important for our future. So, now is the time for nostalgia. It’s a time for laughter. It’s a time for joy. It’s a time for Happy Days “Aaay! It’s a musical.” I hope you enjoy the show!
