EDITORIAL
The Rambler Scouts’ Bonfire last month was a great success with a superb firework
display. The Scouts hope to run this event again next year, so do think about supporting
this as a village event.
Christmas is almost here and we are very much looking forward to the holidays.
Have a happy, peaceful Christmas and New Year and don’t forget those who may be on
their own. Scouts will be delivering Christmas post as usual and Rotary will be ‘shaking
the tins’ in the village – keep an eye out for Santa!

HAGLEY PARISH COUNCIL
TREE WORKS
I am sure you will all have noticed that the trees and hedges on the Worcester Road
grass bank have been tidied up. Thanks to Bromsgrove District Council for funding this work. They are also
paying for the planting of some new trees in the village.
LITTER
A plea to all. We really need your help in keeping the village clean. Please use the litter bins and don’t
drop litter on the ground. Both the Parish Council and the District Council employ litter collectors but the
amount of litter dropped is excessive. Please be considerate of your environment and dispose of litter
responsibly. Thank you.
PLANNING
In October, the Parish Council looked at four planning applications. There were no objections to
B/2007/1021, Harwood House, Wassell Grove; B/2007/0976, Paddock Butchers and B/2007/1033, Clovelly,
31 School Lane. On B/2007/1105, Ferndale, 2A Milestone Drive, Councillors objected on the grounds of the
loss of a bungalow as per the previous application for this property.
CHRISTMAS WINDOW COMPETITION
We will be running the competition again this year, to be judged by the Parish Council. The winner will
be announced in the week commencing 17th December and will be awarded The Richardson Trophy in
memory of the late Don Richardson. Further details have been sent to all businesses with shop fronts.
CHRISTMAS SPONSORSHIP
The Parish Council would like to thank Spar for the generous sponsorship of the Christmas tree this year.
Thank you to all other businesses who have offered sponsorship, details will be given in a later edition of
the Village News.
CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING
There will be no tree recycling on the village car park this year. We are advised that the recycling sites
are at the household waste site in Romsley, Lickey Hills Visitor Centre and Webbs of Wychbold. Full details
of these locations can be found on the notice board.
PACT MEETING
The next Hagley PACT meeting will be held on Tuesday 8th January, at 7.00 p.m. in the Community
Centre.
Hagley Parish Council would like to wish all residents and their families a very Happy Christmas. Please
see the notice board or website for details of the office opening over the festive period.

Thank you to Peter Fallows for this tribute to Henry Chattin. He was an important figure in the
village and especially in HCA.
Henry Chattin 1917 to 2007
I first met Henry in 1967, playing for West Hagley Cricket Club. Henry was a
prolific run scorer, and some time captain. He was deeply interested in local life. He
became a founder member of West Hagley Community Association, and its chairman,
and deserves a great deal of tcredit for the achievement of the community centre which
we now have. I also met him as a member of the Parish Council of which he became
vice-chairman. He was elected to Bromsgrove Rural District Council, and was
subsequently elected to the Bromsgrove District Council and became chairman during
1975/1976.
His working life was spent with Premier Glass, which he founded, based in
Cradley Heath. He ended his political career in 1987 and retired to Spain. He returned to
this country in December 2000 on health grounds, but sadly his wife Joyce died within
two weeks of their return. He has since been living in Droitwich.
Harry was an enthusiast, and did a great deal for the village. At his death he was
still a trustee of the community centre. I am sure that many memories will have been
evoked by his death.
He died on 29th September. His funeral took place at St. John’s church on
12th October.

CLUB REPORTS
HISTORICAL AND FIELD SOCIETY
The 44th Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 2nd October.
After a welcome to all by Chairman Mrs. Irene Oliver the minutes of last year’s
AGM were presented by the Secretary followed by a report on the activities of the Society over
the past year. Treasurer, Mr. R. Vingoe, presented the accounts, which were unanimously
approved by the members.
Mrs. Oliver said that as she was now standing down from the office of chairman she would
like to thank all those members who had helped her, over the last nine years, to keep the Society
going. She would, however, be willing to continue as a committee member. Finally, Mrs Oliver
expressed her best wishes to her successor and looked forward to a successful 45th year for the
society.
Mr. Edgar Smith was invited to be acting chairman to conduct the election of the committee.
The present committee members all agreed to stand for re-election but with the following
proposed change of officers. Mrs. J. Ryder to be chairman, Mr. R. Porter (Vice-Chairman) and Mr.
A. Atkinson (Secretary). All were duly elected.
Mrs. Joan Barwick proposed a vote of thanks for Mrs. Oliver’s long service as chairman and
presented her with a bouquet. The AGM was declared closed.
After the reading of notices Miss Cheryl Bayley gave a talk on “Documenting the Workshop
of the World”. The December meeting of the Society is the Christmas Social and is only open to
members and guests.

CLUB REPORTS
AFTERNOON W.I.
A highly successful Coffee Morning was held at the Community Centre on 6th
October and the resulting profit meant Afternoon WI could donate £135 to the
Fete Committee. Having to cancel participation in the Fete due to the inclement
weather it had been decided to make some recompense to the Committee in the form
of the Coffee Morning.
Members are most grateful to all who attended and to those who helped on the day –
particularly to Hazel Smith, President of the Evening WI, who did sterling work on the Cake Stall!
The speaker in October, Margaret Hill, taught members how to “Anoint and Relax” in order to
cope with the stresses of modern life.
Three members enjoyed a lunch at the Hundred House Hotel followed by a talk by Philip Serrell
whose life as an Auctioneer, Valuer and Television Personality proved most entertaining and
informative.
November is Annual Meeting time when members are given the opportunity to vote for
Committee and President and to air their views on the way the WI is run and other aspects of life
in the WI. This is followed by a speaker who this year is Jackie Peers on “Christmas Floral
Decorations”.
Meetings are on the 2nd Monday in each month, 2.00 pm at the Community Centre when
visitors and prospective members are made most welcome. Please come on the day or telephone
the undersigned on 01562 885215.

HAGLEY WIVES AND WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP
We have our Annual Christmas Carol Service on Tuesday December 11th
at St. Saviour’s and this will be followed by our customary supper in the
Hall. This will be a Bring and Share event organised within our house
groups. This year we are planning to make a donation to charity in lieu of
sending Christmas cards to one another, but this arrangement will be entirely
voluntary.
2008 begins with our meeting on January 8th when we are to dust off our brains and take
part in a Quiz. This will be followed with a meeting on January 22nd when Alan Thornton
is coming to tell us about his life as a seaside hotelier. This talk is entitled “If only Walls
could Talk”. Here they do!
Advance notice of the meeting on February 12th when Peter Preece will give us tips for
Wildlife Photograhy, a beginner’s guide to taking pictures of animals and birds. All these
meetings will be at St. Saviour’s Hall at 8.00 p.m.

CLUB REPORTS
GARDENERS’ CLUB
Happy Christmas to everyone.
Members learnt quite a few new ideas from Philip Aubrey on how
to save our energies in the garden, particularly about which plants to
grow to cut down a lot of work as per pruning and maintenance. Just
shows we are never too old to learn.
We don’t meet in December as members are all too busy planting the last of their bulbs! Or
cutting down their herbaceous borders! Or simply enjoying too much “Christmas Spirit’.
Whatever! May the committee wish you a Merry Christmas.
January 23rd is our Annual Supper followed by a talk “Odd Job Man in Broadcasting” by
Keith Ackrill, retired Radio and TV presenter. If you didn’t manage to buy your tickets in
November give Judy Ilif (883568) a ring to see if she has any left, don’t forget the numbers are
limited. It should be a good evening.
Visitors are welcome to all our meetings including the Social. Join us and have an interesting
evening amongst friends. Information tel: 01562 777014.

ROTARY CLUB
Last month the District Governor for the West Midlands visited and gave a
speech on the latest developments within Rotary, also the importance of
encouraging people to join the biggest service and fellowship organisation in
the world.
Other good speakers have been Bert Maddock, a member, on his career in local government,
and Mike Shann on his job as the Governor of Winson Green Prison. Luchito Mierez, our
sponsored Youth Exchange student, gave a slide show on his home, family, and school in the city
of Cordoba in Argentina.
Rotary wives went to an excellent Fashion Show at the Community Centre, run by businesses
in Hagley; £1,660 was raised for Sunfield School. One of our members, Ian Robinson of
Robinson & Sproson has been collecting peoples’ discarded spectacles and has raised over £100
for Vision Aid. This is a Rotary charity where old spectacles are collected, graded and sent out to
underdeveloped parts of Africa.
We look forward to our Christmas Party at the Stone Manor on 17th December. On the
Saturdays 15th and 22nd December, we will be out “shaking the cans” in Hagley village, backed
up this year by the Scouts and Guides who will be singing carols. We rely on your generous
donations once again to our club’s chosen local charities and third world projects.
We would like to wish everyone in the Hagley area a very happy Christmas and a peaceful
New Year.

CLUB REPORTS
ART CLUB
This year we are having something different in December; instead of
the Social evening, Anthony Slinn will be presenting “The
Impressionists”. This meeting will be Friday 14th December in Hagley,
St. Saviour’s Hall commencing at 7.30 p.m. You will remember
Anthony’s visit to the club in October 2006 when he gave an
excellent presentation on Vincent Van Gogh. I am sure we can expect another interesting evening.
And into the New Year, we have a demonstration by Christine Adams with Flowers - Wet in Wet,
January 11th. Christine has been to the Club before and has previously given us a Day School. A good
start to 2008!
A.A. Pritchard (President)
TREFOIL GUILD
Our October meeting took the form of a jewellery party. Some very pretty
purchases were made and our thanks go to Chris for organising and hosting the
evening.
Members from Trefoil Guilds in the Midlands met in Burton-on-Trent recently. The theme of
the meeting was African Countries. We had been unwise enough to mention, in a report to the
‘powers that be’, that we had held a Mozambican Evening’, so, yes, we were asked to
represent Worcestershire with a display of photographs and artefacts. All the displays were
very interesting; ours raising some donations to the “Schools Project” in which we, as a Guild,
take an interest.
With December comes Christmas, and with Christmas comes Party Night. We meet on
Thursday Dec 13th at 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m. at 28 South Road. We would like to wish the
Editor and all involved with the Village News a Very Happy Christmas and New Year. You
certainly deserve it.
Elizabeth Gingell
MOTHERS’ UNION
This month we are holding our Carol Service at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday 20th
December in St Saviour’s Church followed by mince pies and mulled wine in the Hall.
There will also be a raffle. We look forward to seeing you there.
Jayne, Judy, Rebekah & Linda wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CLUB REPORTS
THEATRE GROUP
As we recuperate from the rigours of our Youth Section’s
performance of The Hunchback Pantomime of Notre Dame, our
thoughts turn to our next adult production. We are looking at
scripts now and we would like to hear from anybody who is interested in joining us.
With this in mind we are holding an Open Evening on 22nd January at Churchill Village
Hall.
On this night we will read parts of some of the scripts that interest us. So if you are
interested in any aspect of staging live theatre including acting, directing, lighting, stage
management, sound, properties, wardrobe and front of house then please come along
on the night. We’ll have some cheese and wine to welcome you.
Most of our members have joined with little or no experience and the adult section
is open to all ages above 18. If you need more information then please call Sue Dean
on 01562 884906 otherwise we look forward to seeing you at 7.15 p.m. for a 7.30 p.m.
start.

“Christmas music from around the world” is the
theme of ourconcert on Saturday, 15th December in
St. Saviour’s Church starting at 7.30 p.m. Carols from
the continents & countries of the world will be
enhanced by some percussion and there will be familiar carols for choir and audience.
The evening will also present music from a new Horn Quartet to which our
accompanist, Rebecca Kitson, belongs.
The charity for this concert is Acorns Children’s Hospice, Worcester, so do join us
for a seasonal musical evening and support this very worthwhile cause. Tickets - £7.50
and £5 (conc.) – are available from Dave Pettit (01562 730248), Jo Hughes or on the

SCHOOL REPORTS
HAGLEY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
In October Year Seven went to visit Harvington Hall as part of their appreciation of
the history of the Catholic Church. They saw the priests’ holes and learned about our patron
saint, St. Nicholas Owen, who created them in the 16th century. Year Eight benefited from a
poet in residence who worked with them to produce poetry of their own, while Year Nine students
experienced a Science and Engineering day in Bristol.
Year Ten and Eleven students went to the Old Rep in Birmingham to see a production of “Othello”.
Cafod Harvest Fast Day gave the Sixth Form the opportunity to provide soup and a roll for all
members of the school whose payment went to help people in the developing world.
For the last few years our school has been participating in an international project called EcoSchools, to encourage students to take responsibility for the environment. We now have a Fairtrade group
and a paper recycling scheme. A group of Year Eleven students have been trained to become ambassadors
by Peace Child. Soon they will be visiting our feeder schools and giving presentations on Fairtrade. The
school is aiming to achieve our green flag and Fairtrade status.
During the last week of October the school tried to reduce its carbon footprint and electricity bills
by supporting the Switch It Off Campaign. At the end of the month six of our pupils attended a
Sustainable Seminar at County Hall where they gave a presentation to DCFS ministers.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR
No, this is not a month early, although we do wish you a Happy and
Peaceful New Year in 2008. The “new year” for the church actually
starts at the junction of November/December with the season of
Advent. Once again the Church will begin to tell the story of the salvation of
mankind by the coming into the world of Jesus and the events of his life, death and
resurrection.
Traditionally Advent is a time of preparation and waiting, reflecting on the past
and looking to the future.
Our modern celebration of the Christmas season certainly involves a lot of
preparation, the shops have been at it since...?
Perhaps we could give time to reflect on the future. What sort of world will our
children inherit if we cannot discover how to live in peace and harmony with our
neighbours? The story of Jesus gives us a way forward. Find time to read it (even on
‘the web” www.therealstory.org.uk). have a Happy Christmas and join with us in
worship. You will be very welcome.
THURSDAY FELLOWSHIP
Our concert in October, given by “Vocal Score” was a well attended delightful
evening. Our target of £500 was reached to be divided between Mary Stevens
Hospice and Acorn trust. Thanks to the organisers and singers (who declined a fee)
and to those who supported us. Our Christmas party is on Thursday 6th December,
admission by ticket only. We will meet again on Thursday 10th Jan 2008. The second
half of our season starts with a devotional topic, the speaker will be Mr Ian Carnell
