The 21 st century. On the Champs-Elysées. Hôtel Fouquet’s Barriere offers guests 21st century luxury with a uniquely French flair. A re-creation of Haussmannian-era architecture, located in the most glamorous and elegant neighborhood of Paris, the hotel is stunning, eye-catching, and decorated in a palette of rich colours. An extraordinary creation. A juxtaposition of worlds. Unexpected shapes and materials… décor that is modern yet baroque. The open-air terrace. The extraordinary interior garden. Sumptuous guest rooms and suites. A Unique Spa. Impeccable service. Hôtel Fouquet ’s Barrière: attracting discriminating guests from the four corners of the globe 3 The story behind a new legend 1906. There was once a young man from the Ardèche who came to Paris to seek his fortune Every day, as he sat at the terrace of the Fouquet’s restaurant, François André dreamed of owning the world. “If I were rich,” he thought, watching women in crinoline dresses alighting from carriages, “I would build a hotel like a palace on this very spot.” It was in the 1920s that François André invented the classic French resort, which is how La Baule became such a sought-after destination. Next came Deauville, Le Touquet, Cannes. Princes and kings – like visions from the pages of a Dostoyevsky novel flocked to the doors of these palace-hotels and their casinos. After his death, his daughter, Diane took over the reins. In 1997, after being seriously injured in a plane crash, she shared the role of president of the Lucien Barriere Group with her husband, Dominique Desseigne. The following year she bought Le Fouquet’s – the centrepiece of her great-uncle’s fantasy - and began the complex process of creating a grand hotel that would surround it. After her death in 2001, Dominique Desseigne took over the project, determined to see it come to fruition. And Lucien Barriere continued in his uncle’s footsteps Fall 2006, the Hôtel Fouquet ’s Barriere is born François André, a true visionary of modern tourism, named his nephew, Lucien Barrière, as his heir apparent. The multi-talented Barriere preserved, developed and consolidated his uncle’s work. He made the palace hotels even more palatial, and he opened casinos to attract new clientele. And, like his uncle before him, he dreamed of one day owning a luxury hotel in Paris. Sadly, he died in 1990, before his dream came true. Hôtel Fouquet’s Barriere is a living tribute to Diane Desseigne, Lucien Barriere and François André. Their dream and goals have been realized: they have built a palace hotel in the finest location in Paris. It is a new hotel, yet one with a rich history that bespeaks passion, perseverance and dedication. A story for the history books 4 The perfect location Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere stands where the Champs-Elysées meets the Avenue George V. It is a remarkable construction recalling Paris’ most spectacular architectural legacy. Standing on the most magnificent avenue in the world with, at its heart, Paris’ legendary brasserie the hotel is imbued with Fouquet’s century-long celebrity and glamour. The hotel is the newest jewel on an avenue that is the epitome of luxury - blending flawlessly with its neighbors - the flagships of leading French luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel and Cartier. Its location is perfect. Just a stroll from the Arc de Triomphe, the Grand and Petit Palais, the Museum of Modern Art, the Palais de Tokyo, the River Seine, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. His solution was to replicate the Haussmann-era façade of Fouquet’s…to “cast” it sculpturally in raw concrete and to apply it to the modern façades. The hotel’s garden, François André terrace and its interior courtyard – with their forest of aluminium boughs – brilliantly recall the Haussmannian epoch. Indeed, the Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere has already become a landmark within a city of landmarks. “I was struck by Haussmann’s vision and I transposed it into my own design. Hausmann is “moulded. Design is created...” Edouard Francois. A secret ingredient to perfection Behind the scenes of the Fouquet’s Barriere is one of the hotel’s most jealously guarded secrets: a network of automatic doors, hidden staircases and elevators and, wide corridors – all created with one goal: to provide the hotel’s privileged guests with a level of service that exceeds the expectations of even the world’s most sophisticated travellers. Haute Couture version architecture 6 E d o u a r d Fr a n ç o i s . Edouard François was born in Paris in 1957. His hallmark is a resolutely modern approach to architecture that focuses on blending in natural surroundings and sustainable development. His masterpieces are exhibited at prestigious museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. His urban vision and experience has reached a new high with the opening of the Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere. 7 Jacques Garcia. Luxury on another level Jacques Garcia was asked to design an interior that was luxurious and rooted in tradition - yet with a revolutionary edge. Surreal. Eclectic. Rules respected. Rules broken. Distinctive furniture and fabrics commissioned uniquely for Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere. Jacques Garcia has created a hotel with character, atmosphere and unprecedented luxury. A desire to stay and to keep coming back. “Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere embraces both the traditional and the modern Fouquet’s. I refused to forget the dream of Francois Andre, Lucien Barriere and Dominique and Diane Desseigne.” Jacques Garcia. Modern and baroque On entering the hotel, one is struck by the dramatic contrast of the contemporary geometric Carrara marble floor with a luxurious array of giant diamonds. Curved walls are upholstered with embroidered chocolate coloured leather. Paintwork of white pearl. Seating areas marked by golden voile drapes, huge mirrors and Murano glass chandeliers. A magnificent Louis XV style gilt SOFA with a futuristic twist. The sweeping marble staircase leads guests graciously towards Le Diane restaurant, Joy gallery, Le Lucien bar and the interior garden. Sound came to the big screen in the Thirties and stars such as Raimu, Marlene Dietrich, Fernandel, Gabin and directors such as Carné, Clouzot and Guitry all signed their contracts there. In the 1950s, the New Wave, embodied by Truffaut, Godard and Chabrol, made the restaurant their stomping ground. In 1976, the restaurant was taken over by Maurice Casanova, determined to turn it into 'The Place to Be' in Paris. Together, he and Georges Cravenne launched the Molière and César Awards Ceremonies for theatre and cinema, followed by the Jean Gabin and Romy Schneider Awards. In 1990, Le Fouquet’s restaurant became a 'Monument Historique' and was thus officially listed as a French cultural shrine. Fouquet's restaurant was acquired by the Lucien Barriere Group in 1998 and fully redecorated by Jacques Garcia. It is now, more than ever before, an enduring symbol of French cultural life and is a reflection of the Lucien Barriere Group’s and Desseigne-Barriere family's commitment to the world of the big screen.
