Winter festival
Christmas
is coming
Get wrapped up warm and lace-up your skates this Christmas in Sunderland as a sparkling
Frost Village appears in the city centre, including a real ice rink, traditional Christmas market
and festive fairground.
Start getting into the Christmas spirit at the annual Christmas lights switch on event,
in Keel Square on Thursday 12 November at 6.30pm. Special guests will join the Mayor of
Sunderland, Councillor Barry Curran to switch on the lights and enjoy a full stage programme
including feel good festive music and a spectacular firework display.
From Thursday 26 November right up until Christmas Eve, there’ll be plenty for people to see
and do in the city centre, around their Christmas shopping and festivities.
A real frozen open air ice rink on Keel Square will give you the chance to test your skills with
the family, learn to skate with a professional or even enjoy a disco on ice. The rink is opening with
a Gala Ice Extravaganza including performances from Dancing on Ice stars Andrei Lipanov and
Susie Lipanova, followed by a full programme of activities throughout the festive period.
To help spread the Christmas cheer, there’ll also be a traditional Christmas market in Keel
Square. The market will feature more than 25 stalls selling a wide range of Christmas gifts, crafts,
continental food and drink in a unique festive frosty atmosphere.
Over on the former Vaux site there will be a traditional fairground. Enjoy fantastic views of the
city on a 15m (49ft) Ferris Wheel or have some fun on the many other rides that will be there,
including traditional carousel, waltzers and bumper cars.
For more information on opening times, prices and activities for the ice rink, Christmas market
and funfair go to www.sunderlandchristmas.co.uk

Washington Leisure Centre
Councillors are asking leisure centre users to park considerately
following complaints from nearby residents about parking.
Residents of Roche Court and Parkway say parking outside their
homes has become an increasing problem since work began on
phase two of the new Washington Leisure Centre. This will see six
all-weather 3rd Generation (3G) artificial grass five-a-side football
pitches and a 100 space car park being built.
Councillor John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness
and Culture, said: “It’s fantastic Washington Leisure Centre is so
popular but we’d ask users travelling there by car to show some
consideration for nearby residents if they’re parking in residential
streets ahead of the opening of the car park in the New Year.”

Thanks to an initial investment
from Washington Area

from Government and European
funding pots, the areas vast
network of footpaths and cycle
routes has been redeveloped.
Some routes lead to specific
destinations such as Washington
Leisure Centre or Bowes Railway.
Holley Park and Princess Anne
Park have marked 3, 2 and 1
kilometre laps, you’ll find an
information board in the parks
which map out the routes and
provide safety information.
Washington Running Club is
using the routes for training.
Tim Bateson from the club said
“The routes are a great way of
providing a measured distance
for people to start to run and to
measure their progress.
One of the hardest things
about running is having the
confidence to start. These are
very accessible routes. Why not
run one with a friend or come
along and run them with
Washington Running Club.”

Charges for garden waste collections
Sunderland City Council is to
introduce an annual £25 charge
for fortnightly collections of
garden waste.
Cabinet members agreed the
charge for kerbside collections
of garden waste, to start in
March 2016.
It is estimated it could deliver
savings to the council of more
than £800,000 per year.
Garden waste collections are
continuing as normal in 2015.
Councillor Michael Mordey,
Portfolio Holder for City Services
said: “Our waste and recycling
team have already put significant
service changes in place, in
response to a reduction in
resources, including the move to
a four day working week.
“The demand for the garden
waste collection service
continues to increase, as more
new homes are built, but the
funding we receive to run the
service has reduced, and
continues to do so. This means
that we had to look at other
ways of running the service, or
lose it altogether.”
Sunderland City Council began
collecting and recycling garden
waste in 2004, and collections
currently take place from over
80,000 properties.
Almost a third of local authorities
in England and Wales, including
Gateshead, County Durham and
Newcastle, charge for the
collection of garden waste, with
charges ranging from £20 to
£69 per year.
Every resident currently receiving
a regular garden waste collection
will receive a letter from the
council later this year outlining
how the new service is to
operate and how to sign up
if they wish.

Blooming marvellous
The Mad Hatter’s hat and
Washington’s famous Lambton
Worm are just two of the
designs on a colourful new story
chair at Washington Library.
Artist Penny Payne worked
with children from local
primary schools and
community groups to develop
ideas for the story chair.
Year 5 pupils from Lambton
and St Joseph’s Primary
schools helped Penny come
up with ideas.
Volunteers have been
rewarded for their efforts in the
Northumbria in Bloom
competition.
Washington Village scooped
Gold in the Village category
and also represented the
region in this year’s national
competition while Washington
was a winner in the Small City
Section.
The Cross Keys and Green
Florist picked up business
awards.
Washington MIND, Washington
Community Resource Centre
and the Rainbow Family Centre
also took part in workshops.
Councillor Linda Williams, Chair
of Washington Area
Committee who is also a
governor at Lambton Primary
School, said: “Children get so
much pleasure from reading
and being read to. They’ve
really enjoyed being part of this
project and it’s definitely
captured their imagination.”
While special awards went to
Princess Anne, Seldom Seen,
Miners’ Welfare and Glebe
Welfare parks, Concord bus
station and shopping precinct,
and Ayton Gardens Allotments.
Beech Grove, East Bridge
Street and Liberty Green
Housing Development all took
awards in the residential
communities category.
The Nuttery at Washington Old
Hall was the winning
conservation project.

New Wear Crossing work steps up
Work is well underway on the
construction of Sunderland’s
new bridge and major roadworks
are planned for both sides of the
river throughout 2016.
These essential works are to
create the approach roads to the
new bridge. They are likely to
cause delays for motorists
travelling along key routes
near the River Wear.
From January 2016 there will be
lane restrictions and reduced
speed limits in place along
several routes, including:
• A1231 Wessington Way –
down to one lane in both
directions for around 12
months
• The short section of Timber
Beach Road that links the

Sunderland City Council, Councillor Paul Watson; Communities and
Local Government Secretary of State, Greg Clark, and Leader of
South Tyneside Council, Councillor Iain Malcolm.
A1231 Wessington Way with
the main road through
Sunderland Enterprise Park
will close permanently from
January 2016
• European Way and Pallion
New Road junction will see
extensive upgrading works
carried out.
The river will also become a
major focus for activity as
construction teams begin work
on the main bridge structure.
Councillor Paul Watson, Leader
of Sunderland City Council, said:
“This work is essential in order
to build the New Wear Crossing,
which will be at the heart of
Sunderland’s new road network
connecting the A19 to the
city centre and the Port of
Sunderland.”
“Understandably, we expect
there will be delays, so anyone
travelling around the A1231
Wessington Way or European
Way in Pallion during 2016
should allow extra time for their
journey or seek alternative
routes.”
The New Wear Crossing is
scheduled to open in 2018, and
will cross the river between
Castletown and Pallion.
The new bridge will have two
lanes of traffic in each direction,
plus dedicated cycleways and
footpaths.

IAMP is ‘nationally significant’
A joint project predicted to help create more than 5,000 jobs and
attract £300m of investment has been confirmed as ‘nationally
significant’. Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council
are working in partnership to create an International Advanced
Manufacturing Park (IAMP).
The park land is to the west of the A19, North of Nissan.
To begin the planning permission process, special designation
was needed from the Government. The Secretary of State for
Communities and Local Government Greg Clark has now
confirmed the designation and stated in his letter ‘the proposal
would be likely to have significant economic impact, be important
in driving growth in the economy, and that it would have an
impact on an area wider than a single local authority area’.
The development - the equivalent of 140 football pitches of new
industry and business park - would house automotive, off-shore
and other hi-tech businesses. It is anticipated that around 150 to
200 hectares would be developed to house businesses as part of
the larger 700 site.
Public consultation was carried out earlier this year. The next
stage of the project is moving towards obtaining further
permissions and consents.

Pupils at Rickleton Primary School have been learning about
technology, engineering and enterprise from the experts at
Rolls-Royce.
With their new advanced aerospace disc manufacturing
facility located within walking distance of the school, the
Rolls-Royce community outreach team has been working with
teachers to develop an engineering curriculum suitable for
primary school children.
The link up is having a positive influence on many of the pupils,
including a group of Year 6 girls who entered the Primary
Engineers competition last year and won the Level 1 Regional
Finals in July.

Fly-tipping
The City Council has been
working with Tyne & Wear Fire

High Street West improvements
A £3.5m upgrade and refurbishment of High Street West is due to
begin in the New Year. Works are being programmed to start in early
2016 and timetabled to last into September.
The High Street works are part of the City Council’s on-going
commitment to promote and attract more visitors and investment to
the city centre. They follow the investment that created Keel Square
and the new St Mary’s Boulevard.
