Southern Bolivia Explored Full of surprises, southern Bolivia is a land of breathless superlatives and impressive records. It can boast the world’s highest navigable lake, its largest expanse of salt flats and its highest capital city. It is also home to the stunning wildlife-rich wetlands of the Bolivian Pantanal, an area usually more commonly associated with neighbouring Brazil. With time to visit each of these spectacular settings, this focused itinerary begins amongst the highlands of La Paz, where you will have a chance to enjoy its rich mix of mestizo architecture, fascinating ancient ruins and dramatic landscapes, before driving on to the shores of Lake Titicaca. Swapping the high plateau for the salt flats of Uyuni, you’ll then drive across the surreal landscapes of the Southern Altiplano, visiting Andean villages and lagoons along the way. Flying down to Puerto Suarez, you then enter the unspoilt landscapes of the Pantanal, where you will explore one of the richest wildlife areas on earth by boat, vehicle and on foot, before ending your journey in the bustling city of Santa Cruz. Highlights: Uncover ancient ruins outside La Paz Take a hydrofoil over the world’s highest navigable lake Explore the salt flats of the Bolivian Altiplano Go wildlife spotting in the Pantanal jungle Tour Includes: 11 Breakfasts, 8 lunches/box lunches, 6 dinners Private driver and vehicle, normally a saloon car for one or two people Local English speaking guides for sightseeing on a private basis, including all entrance fees Private transfers to and from all airports Please note the prices shown above are based on two persons sharing a twin or double room Itinerary Day 1: La Paz On arrival to La Paz you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel to settle in and you will have the afternoon at leisure to acclimatise and relax after your long journey. Day 2: La Paz - Huatajata via Tiwanaku Ruins Today you will leave the World's highest capital city to go to one of the World's highest navigable lakes. Today you will travel 70km from the city to the important archaeological site of Tiwanaku, which is over 1000 years old where you will spend time exploring the site before driving to the shores of Lake Titicaca. (B,L,D) Day 3: Huatajata - La Paz This morning you will take the hydrofoil to Copacabana where you will visit the Shrine of the Dark Virgin before continuing to Sun Island, stopping en route at Moon Island. An optional lunch can be included at the archaeological & panoramic Uma Kollu Restaurant, where you may also take a look at the small handicraft market. This afternoon you will return to Huatajata by hydrofoil before continuing to La Paz. (B,L) Day 4: La Paz - Uyuni After breakfast at your hotel you will be driving out of La Paz to the town of Oruro, where you will then board the train to Uyuni. Overnight in Uyuni. (B) Day 5: Uyuni - San Pedro de Quemez Today your guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you out on to the Salt Flats to enjoy some of the different areas. You will visit Colchani and a salt processing plant, as well as the salt hills, 'Ojos de Agua' and Incawasi Island in the morning. After lunch on the salt flats you will visit the Galaxy and Devil's Cave before ending the day in San Pedro de Quemez. (B,L,D) Day 6: San Pedro de Quemez - Ojos de Perdiz Today you will continue your exploration of the Southern Altiplano visiting the Stone Army, Hedionda and Canapa lagoons. After stopping for a box lunch you will visit various other lagoons in the area and will end the day at Tayka Desert Hotel. (B,L,D) Day 7: Ojos de Perdiz - Uyuni The final day of your time in the Southern Altiplano will take you to the Colorado Lagoon where, where 3 types of flamingo nest, before continuing to the Green Lagoon before returning to Uyuni via the Valley of the Rocks and some Andean Villages. You will have day use of the hotel in Uyuni before your late night train back to Oruro. (B) Day 8: Oruro - La Paz Early morning arrival to Oruro where you will be met and transferred back to La Paz. Afternoon to enjoy La Paz. Day 9: La Paz - Pantanal This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the airport to board your flight to Puerto Suarez, via Santa Cruz. On arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation in the Pantanal. Afternoon to settle in. (B,L,D) Day 10: Pantanal Today you will begin your explorations of the Pantanal visiting the 'Motacusito' cave in the morning to observe the stalactites and stalagmites and this afternoon you will visit the Santa Tecla Waterfall and will have the opportunity to see plenty of wildlife along the way, such as monkeys, iguanas and toucans. (B,L,D) Day 11: Pantanal Today you will spend another day exploring the Pantanal with your guide, visiting the Caceres Lagoon, Tamengo Canal and the Paraguay River, while observing the flora and fauna of the Bolivian Pantanal. (B,L,D) Day 12: Pantanal - Santa Cruz This morning you will have a final excursion in the Pantanal and will be able to enjoy lunch at the lodge before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Santa Cruz. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Evening free to enjoy Santa Cruz. (B,L) Day 13: Santa Cruz This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport where your tour ends.
