SWIMMING
CHAMPIONS
TS BRING HOME THE MEADE KING CUPS!
LAST Friday, Taunton School
held the annual Meade King
Cup Swimming Competition.
This was the 104th year of this
competition and is the oldest
gala on record between more
than two schools in the world.
Teams from King’s College,
Queen’s College and Wellington
joined us to compete for the six
trophies on offer.
All swimmers swam
extremely well to retain the
Girls’ and Boys’ Meade King
Cups as well as The Penny
Cup (Girls Open Relay) and
the Canon Relay Cup. We won
17 of the 27 races and came
second in the other ten. This
was a fantastic achievement by
the whole team and Taunton
remains the dominant school
for swimming locally.

TS VIEW ON...
I’M delighted to be writing to you as
the school’s Chief Operating Officer, a
role which is broadly similar to that of a
bursar but slightly more complex due to
the five-school structure which is specific
to Taunton School.
I am hugely grateful to the whole
school community for making me feel
so welcome and importantly, to be
afforded the privilege of being involved
in supporting the education of so many
wonderful young people.
My first six months have flown by
and now, as the school year draws to
a close, I’m putting together plans for
next year. First on the list is a full review
of the school’s fee structure. This is in
light of the fee affordability issue, which
has attracted so much press attention.
Simultaneously we will conduct an
estates master planning exercise to
inform our ten year strategic plan for
the school site and I look forward to
Student input

OPERATIONS
by Nikki Miller, Chief Operating Officer
reporting back to you on both of these
exercises in due course.
Operationally, improvement work
on buildings and facilities continues
across the school. This summer sees the
start of a refurbishment programme to
upgrade the day houses, starting with
Evans. The rolling refurbishment of the
boarding houses will continue into Wills
East and West and the senior school ICT
room will have a major refurbishment.
The other notable enhancement will be
the extension of the security fencing to
include the Greenham playing fields.
We continue to invest significantly in
the IT infrastructure and have committed
£650,000 for the current upgrade. As
with all ‘back office’ work, much of it is
taking place behind the scenes and won’t
be visible to anyone other than the IT
team. Rest assured, however, that the
work will improve broadband speeds and
network connectivity across the whole
school.
Some of the
children in the
Prep School
have been using the new touch-screen
monitors and we very much look
forward to rolling them out across the
school, along with new Genee Boards
for some of the senior school academic
departments. Once completed, I am
confident we will have a “first in class”
capability.
Meanwhile the finance department
is changing its year end from 31 July
to 31 August to bring it in line with the
academic year. While this change is long
overdue, it represents quite a challenge
for the team who will be reporting a 13
month period this year. For those of you
who like to look at the school’s published
accounts, you will see a bumpy profile
for 2015 to reflect the inclusion of this
extra month.
CCF RN section visits British
Royal Navy Collge Dartmouth
THE CCF Royal Navy Section visited
the Britannia Royal Naval College at
Dartmouth last weekend. They lived
aboard HMS HINDOSTAN, a converted
Mine Hunter specifically fitted out as a
Training Ship.
The cadets were introduced to the
skills of power boat driving using the
same twin screw (two propellers)
picket boats that the Young Officers
are trained on. They also had a go
on the low rope obstacle course, a
challenge
that
requires
teamwork
and a bit
of guts!
Finally
they all
had a go
in the
navigation simulator and successfully
drove an 8,000 Ton Destroyer in and
out of harbour.

India Expedition 2017
I AM happy to announce that Easter next
year will see a group of students from
Taunton School heading to India for the
adventure of a lifetime. The trip will be
subsidised by the school meaning that
half the cost will be covered. Students
will be invited to apply for a place and
therefore, there will be a selection
process.
Join us to learn more!
Much more than a school trip…
World Challenge provide overseas
expeditions to visit developing countries
all around the world which teach life
skills, stretch comfort zones and expand
minds outside the classroom. This two
week itinerary to South India - which
includes a trek, community engagement
project and chance to explore the
Keralan backwaters – fosters team
work, leadership and communication
skills and sees the students heavily
involved in the day to day leading and
organisation of their expedition. By
taking charge, students walk away with
key life skills as well as an enhanced
sense of independence, resilience and
confidence.

I would like to invite both students
and parents to join us in school for an
informative presentation, delivered by
World Challenge, where you will have
the opportunity to hear all about the
amazing challenges that those involved
will have the chance to experience. Learn
more about fundraising opportunities
for participating students, the expedition
and destination, safety and the support
that World Challenge offer.
The Parents’ Presentation is booked for
Monday, October 3rd 2016 at 6.30pm.
World Challenge will also present to the
student body in an assembly prior to the
Parents’ Presentation.
I hope you are able to join us and look
forward to seeing you there.

Woodyer serve up their best
LAST Saturday saw one of the school’s
greatest sporting events, Senior Girls
House Tennis. The drama started long
before the event with key players
dropping out and last minute changes
to teams having to be made. On the day
the girls had to battle their way through
some gruelling group stages, then semifinals and eventually an epic final on the
show court.
After some very competitive matches
Gemma Milne and Stella Payne
from Woodyer eventually came out
triumphant. They were crowned House
Champions, beating Emily Gamble and
Jess Salmon
of Bevan in
second place,
allowing them
to lift high
the coveted
ice cream of
champions. It
was great to
see 30 girls out
playing tennis
at this busy
time of year
and also lots of
support from
both staff and
students.
Well done girls!

Boys tennis: Taunton School vs Clifton College
1st Won 9-0
2nd Won 6-3
3rds Lost 7-2
ON Saturday afternoon, the boys
tennis team travelled up to Clifton in a
bid continue their successful season.
Due to uncertain weather, the 1st
team, as captained by Cameron Milne
in James Lamb's absence, were treated
to Clifton's indoor tennis dome,
comfortably winning 9-0, with Budnyj
and Spillner remaining unbeaten this
season.
The 2nd team had a closer
www.tauntonschool.co.uk
encounter, with the appearance of the
Lota twins assuring a 6-3 win.
Despite the 3rd team’s strong
determination to win, they fell short,
losing to a good Clifton 3rd team 7-2.
A separate congratulations goes out
to Matin Ghorashi, who made his first
sports appearance for Taunton School.
A strong performance from the team
overall, with a view to finishing the
season on a high against a similarly
successful Queen’s team next week.
The 1st team will be aiming to seal
an unbeaten season, having only lost
3/57 sets.
This is also comparable to the
success felt by the boys playing in the
much enjoyed West Somerset men's
league, whom remain dominant at
the top of the table to date. This
experience has no doubt helped
with the boy's effective match play
on a Saturday afternoon due to the
challenge of overcoming the shrewd
tactics of some more senior opponents
– it is also great opportunity to get on
the court with some of the coaches!

Cricket: TS vs Wellington
1st XI - 234-9 (Sam Whitefield 76,
Charlie Gliddon 43) drew with
Wellington.
THE half term finally finished and the
disappointment of the wash out against
Sherborne brought up a chance for the
derby against Wellington.
With rain on the horizon, the steady
opening combination of Court and
Whitefield started well against some
good and accurate fast bowling.
On a field where singles were of a
premium, due to the fast nature of
the outfield, the metronomic nature
of Block, hit a gap for four and Block
saw the score move nicely to 44 within
the first 10 overs. However, this would
see the continuation of our kryptonite
for the year, batting collapses, as we
managed to find our way to 54-4 and
Charlie Gliddon joining Whitefield in the
13th over.
Unlike most other collapses, which
have spelled the end of the innings,
these two went at a run a ball and
put together the second hundred run
partnership of the season with 135 runs
and have us in a strong position of 189
with 8 overs to go. However, for the
second time in the match, we threw
away a decisive position and if it wasn’t
for some smart batting from Crossing,
Parades-Tarazona and Horler, we might
not have made 200.
After tea, the rain, which had
threatened all day, finally broke cover
and put pay to the match and a chance
to press home our advantage.
2nd XI- Wellington 117-7 beat TS 92
WE bowled and fielded well restricting
Wellington to a modest 117-7 from
25 overs. Wickets were shared evenly
between the bowlers, catches were
taken and pressure applied.
In reply, we made common mistakes of
losing early wickets and failing to punish
bad balls. Pressure increased as we
fell behind the required run rate. Josh
Blackmore-Greasley (20) and skipper,
Angus West (23), steadied the ship to
consolidate the innings.
We failed to keep the score ticking
over in the face of some good bowling
www.tauntonschool.co.uk
and the final task proved to be beyond
us. Late, lusty blows from the tail came
belatedly and we were left lamenting
a slow start, closing at 92 all out in the
final over. Again, lots of good cricket
played by a group of cricketers who bask
in the challenge and the spirit of the
game.
3rd XI- TS 156 (Tom Bird 57) beat
Wellington 110
THE 3XI continued their winning run
with an excellent 46 run victory against a
spirited Wellington side.
The opposition put TS into bat and
quickly rued the decision with the Bird
brothers plundering 91 runs off the
first 10 overs. Tom Bird was particularly
impressive, scoring a quick fire 57
including an impressive 8 boundaries.
After an inevitable slowing down of
the run rate, some intelligent batting by
James White ensured that TS scored an
excellent 156 off 20 overs. In reply, the
Wellington team were always behind the
run rate and the result was never really
in question, despite some aggressive
hitting in the middle of their innings.
Mancini and Power bowled with real
intent and it was fitting that Mancini
took Wellington's final wicket with the
last ball of the innings.
15A- Lost to Wellington
THE 15As never really got going against
Wellington and needed to be at the top
of their game, with players missing. This
wasn’t to be the case and the game
was over almost before it got started.
However, in true spirit the team is ready
for the challenge of King’s Bruton this
weekend.
TS U14A 242-4 (30 Overs), Wellington
119 all out (21 Overs)
AFTER winning the toss, TS U14As batted
first on a pitch that played well but
would once an over produce tennis ball
bounce from no where. After a safe start,
Matt Holland and Oscar Samuel put on
144 for the second wicket in 13 overs. It
was a calm and chanceless partnership
before Matt fell for a well deserved 46.
After reaching his hundred, Oscar
continue to play shots to all parts finally
falling for 130 off just 64 balls.
In reply, Wellington struggled to get
going with some excellent bowling from
Billy Williams-Pritchard who would end
up taking 3-19 off 6 overs.
Whilst the rain threatened to thwart
our efforts of victory, the boys kept
fighting for wickets, eventually bowling
Wellington out for 119 in 21 overs to
leave us singin’ in the rain!
15/14Bs Wellington 110 (Payne 4-23)
lost to TS 112-5
THE relatively short drive to Wellington
had a considerable effect on the
collective calibration of the Taunton
attack, perhaps connected with driving
challenge of remaining in a Kelly convoy.
Having elected to bat, Wellington
were given an electric start by the
waywardness of the Taunton seam team
rushing to 50 almost unnoticed in the
main thanks to a quickfire 33 from their
overseas player.
The usually metronomic Russell
could barely put one foot in front of
the other whereas at the other end
Edwards bowled a superb spell of fast
and accurate bowling; unfortunately for
the majority of these balls his foot was
not only in front of the other but also
considerably past the popping crease.
However, Edwards’ bustling aggression
and his arm flapping menacingly behind
him like an out of control crane conjuring
up a striking resemblance to RGD Willis,
eventually bullied a wicket. Then Russell
found his groove and hit the woodwork
before Wellington were finished off
by Payne and the deployment of the
Spedegue dropper and the Pamplona
express Solano clearing up the tail.
It looked like we would be home
before tea with Perry hitting the first
5 balls of our reply for 17 but there
followed a mini collapse that required a
flashy 29 from the Taunton Chanderpaul
Ollie James and then some sensible
hitting from Mouzouri and Kerslake to
see us home with 3 overs to spare.

Junior House Cricket
TUESDAY, June 14th saw
the Junior House Cricket
Competition take place. A
knockout competition between
the six sides was decided on,
with one lucky loser in the first
round making it through to the
semi final.
The first round of games
pitted Wills East against Evans,
Wills West against Goodland,
and Fairwater against Marshall.
The latter team won each of
these contests and Fairwater
progressed in the closest of the
three games.
The honour of the best match
of the day goes to the semi
final between Goodland and
Marshall which came down to
the last ball, with a possibility
of a super over on the cards.
Dan Gurr saw the Marshall side
home with two runs from the
final delivery.
Over on Foxcombe, Evans
beat Fairwater having put up
a tough total to chase. In the
final Evans batted first and
scored 62 thanks to a fine
opening partnership from
Josh Henderson and Nahum
Merigan. In reply, Marshall put
up a brave fight but lost early
wickets and ultimately came
up 9 runs short despite some
powerful late hitting.
All teams participated in the
right spirit and provided an
enjoyable afternoon of cricket –
thanks to all who took part.
