Mayslake Ministries is a lay-based
not-for-profit spiritual center founded
in the Franciscan tradition. We
transcend invisible lines of parish,
church and diocese to reach out to all
who seek to deepen their relationship
with Jesus Christ, through retreats,
spiritual direction, and adult faith
formation programs. How may we
help you on your spiritual journey?

Dear Friends:
As I look back on this past year, my heart is filled
with gratitude for the abundant blessings we
have received. Let me share with you some of the
wonderful highlights of 2012:
• In July, Fr. Pat Brennan joined our staff as full time
Director of Development. Fr. Pat brings a wide
variety of gifts and talents to Mayslake Ministries,
including his expertise in the field of evangelization. This past
December, Fr. Brennan was invited by Cardinal George to be part of
the team of writers creating materials for the Synod of Evangelization.
This is an incredible honor for Fr. Brennan and for Mayslake Ministries
• Mayslake Ministries now has 19 affiliate Spiritual Directors, making
us the largest resource for individual spiritual direction in Chicago.
Included in our roster of spiritual directors are two pastoral
counselors: Dr. Barbara Jarvis-Pauls and Fr. Pat Brennan, D.Min, Psy.D.
• Our Veteran’s Ministry continues to grow as the spiritual trauma of
war takes its toll on our soldiers coming home from combat. In this
coming year we will be offering 6 weekend retreats for our military.
With the addition of the Racine, Wisconsin and Frankfort, Il retreat
sites, Mayslake Ministries is now serving Vet’s from Wisconsin,
Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. These retreats are offered free of charge
to all military and their significant others dealing with issues of Post
Traumatic Spiritual Stress.
• Mayslake Ministries is partnering with DePaul University on various
spiritual programs, including our popular Saturday Morning Breakfast
Club, which is held at their Naperville Campus.
• Our annual fall conference drew over 100 people as Fr. Donald Senior,
Alice Camille, and Fr. Michael Sparough invited participants to reflect
upon “Living the Beatitudes.”
• Filming and production on the highly acclaimed 3 part Eucharistic
DVD Series by Dr. Mary Amore was completed in late fall and is now
available. Contact us for more information.
Building on our Franciscan heritage, we follow in the footsteps of St.
Francis of Assisi by proclaiming the gospel message of Christ in parishes,
to groups and organizations, and to individuals. Mayslake Ministries
listens and responds to the spiritual needs of adult men and women,
and the churched and the unchurched, for all are welcome at Mayslake
Ministries. To aid us in our mission to preach and evangelize, in this
coming year, Mayslake Ministries hopes to expand our means of spiritual
outreach to include the latest technology such as a Mayslake Ministries
app for smart phones, our own radio program, and the opportunity to
offer spiritual products and materials written by our gifted affiliates on
our website. Great things are happening at Mayslake Ministries.
We are growing in our spiritual services and products because of people
like you, who believe in our ministry and are willing to support us
financially. These are still turbulent times for Not for Profits, but with
your help, friendship, and financial support, Mayslake Ministries will
remain a beacon of light for those who walk in darkness. God bless you
for your dedication to our ministry.
Dr. Mary Amore
Executive Director

Development at Mayslake Ministries
It has been an honor to come on board as a staff member of Mayslake Ministries. My role is
the Director of Development. Dr. Mary Amore and I have imagined this role in two ways: Ii is
my responsibility to increase the financial resources that support the work of Mayslake; and I
also work in program development, especially developing processes for resourcing parishes and
organizations in the New Evangelization.
I am pleased to report that we have added a considerable number of new names of potential
donors, based on my history in pastoral ministry. The people working on finances here at Mayslake Ministries report
that our donations have increased since last year, as a result of reaching out to these new donors.
I am in the process of creating a wholistic development plan for Mayslake Ministries which will include multiple types
of outreach: mail, phone, focus groups, and one-on-one sessions, which hopefully will generate multiple streams of
revenue for Mayslake Ministries. As a director of development, I understand the importance of building relationships
with our donors based on mutual trust and respect. I hope to get to know many of you in the coming year. I also
will be working on advertising and marketing Mayslake Ministries so that people gain a better understanding of our
history and our mission. The human heart seeks God above all else, and Mayslake Ministries is here to help people on
their spiritual journey toward Christ.
This March, I will celebrate the 32nd anniversary of my radio show Horizons, on which I regularly promote Mayslake
Ministries and the wonderful programs that we offer, as well as communicating our willingness to resource parishes
around a number of timely issues. One of my areas of expertise is the creation of Small Christian Communities in
parishes. For Lent 2013, I produced a series called Koinonia, which parishes and other small groups are using for
Lenten faith sharing. Both Dr. Mary Amore and I have developed a good working relationship with Mr. Tom Quinlan
the director of religious education for the diocese of Joliet, and the Koinonia series was developed in cooperation with
him. Mayslake Ministries is communicating with parishes especially,in the archdiocese of Chicago and the diocese of
Joliet, that we are available for resourcing staffs, as well as offering spiritual direction, counseling, and psychotherapy.
Once a month, Mayslake Ministries offers a Sunday Eucharist oriented to those who have been away from the church,
hurt by the church, or confused by the church. We call this effort “Come to the Table.” Our monthly mass, “Come to
the Table” is also an attempt to respond to the Archdiocese of Chicago’s naming of July 2012 to July 2013 as the Year
of Sunday Mass – encouraging Catholics to learn more about and value anew the gift of the Eucharist.
Everything that Mayslake Ministries does is an attempt to assist people in growing in their faith. In light of this, I hope
to offer a seminar in the coming year entitled “Our Hearts Were Burning within Us,” a session on the United States
bishops’ pastoral plan for adult faith formation in the United States. The new evangelization is really a reemphasis of
the vision articulated by Pope
Paul VI in his 1975 encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi. In that document, the Pope called for evangelization to become the
central mission of the church. He also offered touchstones as to how we are to evangelize. We are to renew the faith
of active and inactive Christians, reach out to the unchurched, evangelize youth, use technology to evangelize, and to
unite our evangelization efforts with mercy and justice.
We are working to develop Mayslake Ministries as the premier center for training and formation in evangelization and
spirituality in the metropolitan area.
I am excited about the possibilities for the future of Mayslake Ministries. I hope that my presence and ministry bring
value to the holistic development of this great organization.
In Jesus,
Pat Brennan
