WMMR places Philly Band IKE
as Bon Jovi opener
WMMR / Phillyʼs 1st Rock Station is proud
to announce that regional rock band IKE has
been chosen as the opening act for Bon Joviʼs
sold-out show February 4th at Boardwalk Hall
in Atlantic City.
On December 27th, prior to IKEʼs performance at WMMRʼs weekly Tuesday Night
Rock Show at Grape Street-Philadelphia, front
man John Faye was pulled aside by WMMR
afternoon personality, Jaxon, to show a special
surprise – a video-taped invitation (attached)
from Jon Bon Jovi.
Obviously, the band is ecstatic about the
opportunity.
“Itʼs one thing to get an opening slot for a
huge band - but to actually see Jon Bon Jovi
up on the video screen at Grape St., personally inviting us to play the show, THAT was
above and beyond what anyone could ask for”
says Faye. “It was like we got this incredible
windfall of good fortune at the end of the year,
first with being the lead track on the WMMR
Local Shots CD, then having the station actually add ʻInto Philadelphiaʼ into rotation, and
now the Bon Jovi gig. Life is definitely good
right now.”
WMMR released Jaxonʼs “Local Shots, Volume 1,” featuring 13 of the areaʼs best bands,
on December 6th. IKEʼs talents set the tone for
the exhilarating regional rock CD. “Handsdown, IKE is one of the best bands in Philadelphia. Respected by his peers, and adored by
his fans, this is a well-deserved honor for John
Faye and his band IKE,” Jaxon exclaims.

Flow-- the name of this newly formed band
says it all. “We go with the flow,” says lead
singer Michael Ferrara, “no restrictions, no
bounds.”
ence of playing on local circuit in Pennsylvania and New Jersey hot spots. They all
value each others talents, the music, and
want to keep on progressing.
Since their debut only a few weeks ago,
Flow is already creating a buzz on the
local band scene. They have been playing at some of the biggest rooms aroundSpectators, The Lagoon, Kildareʼs in West
Chester, Top Dog, and 15 North to name a
few. Their focus is on entertainment and
having fun and their energy really translates
to the crowd.
Michael Ferrara aka “Peaches” formerly of
the Loop is on lead vocals. Mark Burkert
of Lima Bean Riot is on guitar. Vince
Foschini of Hurricane Jane is on guitar. On
bass is James Smith who is the 2005 winner
of the Best Bassist Award in Philly. Finally
on drums is Kevin Ott, formerly of Last
Man Standing.
But what really sets Flow apart from other
local cover bands is their commitment to
rock and roll. The band will still play the
mainstream favorites, but they want to
get away from some of the cliché and add
a little more edge to their performances.
“People are drawn to the different material
and the amount of energy” says Ferrara.
Flow has a diverse song list. On any given night, they play anything from classics
like “Livin on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, to
newer music like “Iʼm Not Okay” by My
Chemical Romance or “Mr. Brightside”
by the Killers. They usually play around
40 songs or three 50 minute sets a night.
Flow can be seen at every Tuesday from
10pm to 2am at Spectators in Gloucester,

BILLY JOEL ADDS FIFTH AND FINAL SHOW
The “Piano Man” Billy Joel, without a
doubt one of the most popular performers ever
to grace the stage in Philadelphia, is adding
a fifth and final show (Thursday, March 30)
at Wachovia Center, due to overwhelmingly
popular demand. Tickets to the newly added
performance will go on sale on Saturday, January 14 at 10 a.m. Joelʼs first four performances
(February 14, March 7, March 13 and March
13) are sold out.
Joel, who has a long-storied history in Philadelphia, first broke through the radio airwaves
on WMMR (93.3 FM) when he performed
a live broadcast from Sigma Sound Studios
on April 15, 1972. While performing a then
unknown “Captain Jack,” the station would
later rebroadcast the track due to overwhelmingly popular demand. As one of the first radio
stations in the country to play the song, Joel
became an instant hit in Philadelphia, which
helped launch his career.
Joel holds the record for most individual
performances by an artist on the nine-year-old
Wachovia Center stage (13). His six consecutive sell-outs with Elton John at Wachovia
Center in 2002 were the most performances
performed by the piano-playing duo since they
first toured together in 1994. Joel is one of only
two artists to have commemorative banners
hanging from the Wachovia Center rafters recognizing the record number of performances
(Bruce Springsteen is the other). Joelʼs 41
banner commemorates shows at the Spectrum,
Veterans Stadium and Wachovia Center. Joel
also performed a seven-night run between l997
and l998 at Wachovia Center.
Tickets for Joelʼs fifth show at Wachovia
Center will go on sale on Saturday, January 14,
beginning at 10 a.m. at the Wachovia Complex
box office and through Ticketmaster locations
throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region.
Tickets can be purchased on line at ticketmaster.com or via phone charge at 215-336-2000.

CAESARS (800/677-SHOW)
Bernadette Peters came to our
attention more years ago than
neither she nor we would care
to remember. We first saw her
Off-Broadway in a show titled
“Dames at Sea,” in which she
impressed audiences and critics
alike with her delightful performance. And, that turned out to be
the start of an illustrious career.
Beautiful, vivacious, sexy.
These three words immediately
come to mind when describing
Bernadette Peters. Her enduring popularity in the world of
entertainment has made her the
talk of the town wherever she
performs. She has starred in such
shows as “Sunday In the Park
With George,” “George M.”,
“Mack and Mabel” and “Into
the Woods,” and won two Tony
Awards for “Song and Dance”
and “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Her Hollywood credits in
numerous films include “The
Longest Yard” with Burt Reynolds, “Silent Movie” with Mel
Brooks, “The Jerk” and “Pennies
From Heaven,” both with Steve
Martin, “Annie,” with Carol
Burnett and “Pink Cadillac” with
Clint Eastwod.
There are two honors that mean
a great deal to her. One is from
Harwardʼs Hasty Pudding Club
which names her “Woman Of
the Year,” the other, getting her
“star” on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame.
Peters has also starred on
television and dazzled audiences
with her personal recordings as
well as with the Grammy Awardwinning “Gypsy” cast recording.
In 2003, she received her seventh
Tony Award nomination for her
brilliant portrayal of Momma
Rose in the record-breaking
Broadway revival of “Gypsy.”
Bernadette Peters will be in
the spotlight at Caesars Circus
Maximus on February 10. Also
scheduled are: Jim Belushi, Jan.
27, and Frankie Valli Feb. 24.
.
TROPICANA (800/THE-TROP)
The Tropʼs 2,000-seat Broadway-style showroom has been
fully transformed to accommodate Atlantic Cityʼs only indoor
ice show for the seasonʼs hottest
revue, “Ice Fusion: The Coolest
Show On Ice.” The Broadwaystyle production fuses a variety
stage show, combining the
excitement of figure skating with
live musical vocals, hilarious
comedy, stunning visual effects
and high-tech costuming worn by
a talented cast.
Featuring solos by Olympic and
World medalists Surya Bonaly,
Nicole Bobek and Gary Visconti,
“Ice Fusion” presents itself as a
Cirque-type novelty, through big
production ensemble numbers
typical of the “Ice Capades-era”
shows.
“Ice Fusion: The Coolest
Show On Ice” will be presented
through Feb.16.

Sublime” by Patricia Lynch, is at
once intriguing and unsettling as it
examines the insidious ways in which
political ideas take hold of ordinary
Americans and what recourse we
have in voicing our hurt and anger.
Todd and Constance have been
searching for solace ever since they
lost their only son in the attack of
Sept. 11. Stuck for years in a tragic
inertia, they have come to a big city
art museum in hope of recruiting a
messenger to help carry out an act
of patriotism. Or is it terrorism? On
stage at the Adrienne Theatre, Jan. 20
– Feb. 18.
ACT II PLAYHOUSE
(215/654-0200)
The comedy “Pete ʻnʼ Keely” by
James Hendman is based on the
fictional network TV reunion of
“Americaʼs Swinging Sweethearts.”
The time is 1968, Pete Bartel and
Keely Stevens, a combination of
Steve and Eydie, Sonny and Cher,
with a touch of Lucy and Desi, were
a hugely popular singing duo from
the late ʻʼ50s and early ʻ60s.
Now we tune in to NBC as Americaʼs Swinging Sweethearts reunite
for a live television special. The only
catch is that they havenʼt spoken
to each other since their breakup at
Caesars Palace five year ago. This
production, presented through Feb. 5,
features Denise Whelan as Keely and
Todd Waddington as Pete.

POD
3636 Sansom Street
Philadelphia Res.: 215/387-1803
Itʼs been nearly five years since
we enjoyed a memorable meal
at Pod, a fascinating Pan Asian
restaurant in University City.
We promised ourselves that we
would return and on a recent
Wednesday evening, we finally
kept that promise. Iʼm happy to
report, it was just as enjoyable
the second time around.
At Pod, you can have a peek
into the next century. The spacious restaurant with its futuristic
décor and high-tech innovations
is perfectly suited to its neighborhood. The dining roomʼs color
scheme is a suave symphony
in white. White molded plastic
chairs are placed at white tables
while white pods for two are
positioned along a wall with tall
windows. The only color variation you will find is a fire engine
red modular foam sculpture for
seating in the lounge section.
At the oval 34-seat sushi bar,
a conveyor belt delivers fresh
sushi directly from the kitchen.
The cuisine can be described as
Asian-fusion. Under the expert
guidance of Executive Chef Zana
Tanaka, the bill of fare leans
heavily on Japanese preparations
but with Chinese and Thai influences. The menu will appeal to
just about everyone – those who
love traditional Asian dishes as
well as those who are eager to try
something more sophisticated.
After you pass the first page
of the menu featuring a varity of
exotic drinks and international
beers, the next section is devoted
to sushi and sashimi. Combination platters start at $12.50 for a
vegetable sushi combination and
go to $65 for a large assortment
of sushi and sashimi offerings.
Page three displays dim sum,
featuring the traditional breakfast
and lunch staples. There are such
delicacies as crispy calamari
($8.50), tempura vegetables
($9), crispy chicken and seafood
spring rolls ($12), sesame crusted
scallops ($13), and Kobe beef
cooked tableside on Japanese
river rocks ($15).
Among the entrees on the
fourth page, youʼll find crispy
scallion chicken ($17), grilled
teriyaki salmon ($19) Peking
duck with moo shu pancakes
continued with glazed Chilean sea bass ($28), so moist, it
practically melted in my mouth.
Japanese sweet potatoes and
snow peas made amiable escorts.
My companion gave high marks
to five tender Szechwan lamb
chops ($26) in a sesame dressing
that surrounded a tasty tangle of
Shanghai noodles with an interesting smoky flavor. Wok roasted
baby bok choy in a garlic sauce
($6) worked well as a side.
Desserts created by pastry
chef
Elizabeth Brozoski were
($23 for half, $36 for a whole)
awesome. Daughterʼs dessert
and lobster stir-fry with lobster
($10), aptly named chocolate,
sauce ($25). Rounding out the
menu is a two-page wine list with chocolate, chocolate was delia good selection of domestic and cious, delicious, delicious. Three
imported wines along with sake
by the glass and by the carafe.
There is only one way to eat in
an Asian restaurant – you share,
mixing and matching to sample
as much as possible. First to
arrive was a sashimi plate ($25)
that brought 15 pieces of the
freshest fish including salmon,
yellowtail and striped bass,
presented attractively on a dish
of compressed chopped ice. The
generous platter could easily
have sufficed as a meal for one,
but we chose to share. A chilled
glass of Madoka sake washed
down these goodies.
The huge mountain of house
salad ($8), a blend of green and
red leaves bathed in a mild dressing and sprinkled with crunchy
parsnip chips tasted so fresh, it
could have been grown in the
restaurantʼs kitchen. The wild
mushroom dumplings ($9), in
a five-spice mushroom reduction, pleased the palate with their
earthy flavor.
The pleasure of the meal
24
eye-catching chocolate creations,
each placed in one third of a
bento box, brought a warm, moist
chocolate bread pudding covered
with chocolate chips, a bittersweet creamy chocolate mousse
and, last but certainly not least, an
artistically designed chocolate pot
de crème topped with an edible
piece of 24-carat gold. A warm
peach cobbler ($10) accompanied by fresh raspberries and a
raspberry compote proved to be
another winner.
Pod is open seven days a week,
Monday – Friday from 11:30 am
– 11 pm; Saturday 4 – 12 pm and
Sunday 4 – 10 pm.

CURLY “JUST SPORTS” WING KING IN THE KITCHEN ...
By Mike Vagnoni
Just Sports Bar & Grill is the home of the
Wing King Chef...Curly. He is the spark
plug that keeps the kitchen cooking. Curly
is a master chef who is a veteran with over
25 years, who has a love affair for food and
he creates the many entrees and food items
offered at Just Sports. “Back in 1999-2000,
Curly Von Burly, the Viking Pig, was in the
WIP Wing Bowl and not only does he love the
wings, he is the creator of a special sauce . His
sauce is so good ...the recipe is kept locked in
a safe. Curly will be cooking up over 20,000
wings on Superbowl Sunday weekend for sure.
Curly grew up in the Bronx and became a
chef at an early age. This Bucks County resident has fans from all over the region who stop
by Just Sports to sample his many food items.
When it comes to his wings...Curly had this
to say about how he created the special wing
sauce he is so proud of. “Over the years work-
ing with other fine chefs, we developed by trial
and error, the secret sauce for our wings. Iʼm
not kidding this sauce is so special, we keep
the recipe locked in a safe.” You have to stop
by and try his wings and his sauce. Many say
they offer the best but you have not had the
best until you sample what Curly has created
in his 25 years in the biz.
In the photo above, Curly and Steve are seen
having some fun. Steve, by the way, is being
trained by Curly to become a future wing bowl
champion.
Just Sports is located at 600 New Rodgers
Road (Rt 413) in Bristol Pa. and is open daily
serving the food from CURLY and his staff.
They offer a new menu full of many items that
you will find are worth the experience. So the
next time you are going out, be sure and stop
on over to JUST SPORTS BAR AND GRILL.
Order some wings....with Curlyʼs special
sauce.

IN THE NUTSHELL
By lynn Ramage’
Out on the Town Entertainment News
http//www.ootweb.com
Hope all had a pleasant and safe
Holiday. Hoppy Riddle and I,
finally let the cat out of the bag as
our New Years Announcement that
we are getting a much over due 10
year Club Cellblock (RIP) together
most likely at the Whiskey Tango in
May. Information can be found on
www.Metalheadsunited.com and
http://www.myspace.com/CellblockReunion. The response has
been overwhelming! We are looking
for as many of the bands that actually
performed in our club to play blocks
and take our friends down memory
lane one last time. The Cellblock
was opened in 1990 shortly after the
closing of the Empire Rock Room.
The first Booking gal there was Lori
Gallagher. Shortly after Lori left I
was asked to join the team by owner
Teddy L. I met and befriended Hoppy
who was always the sound engineer
there and Ron Hamill and Tracy on
lights. We hired metal DJ Dave Beam
and became a big Happy family. The
rock club had a cool penitentiary theme about it and we
figured we worked with over
400 bands such as; Roughhouse, Naughty Jane, Mr.
Bones, Sic Vikki, AudioMob,
WhiteFoxx, Teachers Pet,
Dollhaus Puppet, Rattlehead,
Side Show Freak, Christine,
Scarlett Fever, Britny Fox,
and the Nationals such as Dee

REVIEWS OF TOP 3 PICKS
#3. Of Montreal- The Sunlandic Twins
Of Montrealʼs transformation into a dance band is complete.
Starting out with their debut album, Cherry Peel, they
mostly made simple pop songs based around an acoustic
guitar. Things got more complex as the band progressed to
albums that reflected some of the more experimental music
of The Beatles and The Beach boys, while still retaining a
playful quirkiness. But with last yearʼs Satanic Panic in the
Attic, more and more keyboard and dance elements came
into the mix. With the release of The Sunlandic Twins this
year, those dance elements have taken over. This album
couldʼve easily been a disaster. And while it isnʼt much like
some of their older albums, you still get the feeling that
this is most definitely an Of Montreal album. Things start
out perfectly with “Requiem for OMM2”, an obvious choice
for one of the best songs of the year, which has a hook
reminiscent of The Cars. The album progresses perfectly
from one danceable tune to the next. Seeing Of Montreal
live this year really solidified in my mind why this album
is so great. These are songs that can make people forget
about all the complexities of life and just dance. Not a single
person wasnʼt smiling during their show, mostly filled with
material from this album. This certainly isnʼt Of Montrealʼs
best effort, but even one of their lesser albums beats out
most things released during the year.
#2. Architecture in Helsinki- In Case We Die
Youʼd be hard pressed to listen to this album and not enjoy
it. The Australian nine piece, Architecture in Helsinki, has
crafted a ridiculously catchy and fun album with this one.
The group greatly benefits from a high amount of members,
since it allows them to incorporate a lot of different instruments and sounds. While some bands seems to overuse a
variety of instruments, creating overly busy music, AiH knows
exactly how to utilize what they have. From start to finish, In
Case We Die truly has the feel of a complete album. Along
the way, weʼre treated to some of the best songs of the year,
like “Wishbone” and “Maybe You Can Owe Me”. This is
music to put you into a good mood, and for me, AiH really
pulled this off. The music never sticks to anything for long,
just as an interesting melody develops, another will take itʼs
place. In Case We Die is overflowing with ideas, and just the
sheer fun of listening to it gives it a well deserved spot as my
second favorite album of the year.
#1. The Fiery Furnaces- Rehearsing My Choir
Itʼs very rare that everything about a particular album just
seems to “click”. Whatʼs even rarer is when an album that
works so well for somebody, seems like nothing but pretentious trash to somebody else. Put me into the group that finds
this work of music brilliant. From the first few listens I could
tell that Rehearsing My Choir was something special. The
Furnaces have made albums which went on to become my
favorites of 2003 and 2004, and even landed another spot in
my top ten of 2005. Thereʼs no doubt that I think this band
is excellent, but this album takes them to a whole new level.
While past albums were great, what they had in innovation
and creative music, they sometimes lacked in emotional
impact. What the Friedberger siblings have crafted with this
album is truly unique, but at the same time, heartwarming.

JOHNNY WINTER, FIVE DECADES OF
RIVETING BLUES GUITAR
influences and working with him made
me feel that people were really starting to
take me seriously and that I could really
play the blues. It was one of the high
points of my career and still is.” Winterʼs
took a four year break from recording
before signing with Alligator Records in
1984 which proved to be a great move for
Winterʼs and the label when he released
“Guitar Slinger” charting in Cashbox and
Billboard magazines earning a Grammy
nomination. Many considered this to
be Winterʼs finest album to date. His
sophomore release on Alligator, “Serious
Business” earned yet another Grammy
nomination continuing the momentum of
a man that by now had earned the rare distinction of being considered a legend in his
own time by the general public and within
the industry. By now there wasnʼt a fellow
artist that didnʼt acknowledge the skills of
Winterʼs playing.
By Rob Nagy
For five decades blues guitarist Johnny Winter has
been capturing the hearts of fans and piers alike.
Playing his signature firebird guitar, which still
dangles around his neck, Winterʼs became a legend
in his adopted hometown of Beaumont, Texas from
early on. Earning much deserved praise and attention from Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, B.B. King
and Bobby “Blue” Bland, all of whom he would
later perform with, it was only a matter of time
before Winterʼs landed a record deal and carried
his distinct style to audiences all over the U.S. and
beyond. By the late 1960ʼs Winterʼs guitar magic
caught the attention of Rolling Stone Magazine
when they paid homage and spotlighted Winterʼs
quoted as saying “Johnny Winter is the hottest item
outside Janis Joplin. Imagine a 130 pound cross
eyed albino blues man with long fleecy hair playing
some of the gutsiest blues guitar you ever heard.”
This brief mention, took Winterʼs from the ranks
of being a local guitar god to international fame
landing him a long awaited major record deal. An
appearance at the infamous Woodstock concert in
1969 only furthered his exposure, career and legend.
For Winterʼs there would be no looking back.
Winterʼs career started when he was just a teenager
forming his first band “Johnny and the Jammers”
along with his brother Edgar on keyboards. Johnny
and the Jammers became local celebrities in no
time winning talent competitions and packing clubs
ultimately landing a record deal, on the Dart label,
when he was only fifteen earning Winterʼs his first
singles “School Day Blues” and “You Know I Love
You”. Winterʼs soon became a fixture in the burgeoning Beaumont, Texas music scene working on
his own recordings and as a sideman with a variety
of artists. Winterʼs musical reputation continued to
spread as a result of jamming with many of the acts
that passed through town. It wasnʼt uncommon to
find Winterʼs on stage with a whose who of Blues.
By the late 60ʼs, in spite of his notoriety, Winter
was finding it difficult to find work for his new trio
with many clubs blaming the fact that it would be
hard to generate a following for what some called
“A hard blues band”. Winterʼs eventually landed
some stable work in an Austin club where they drew
respectable crowds but still searched for a big time
recording contract. That chance soon came when
a local businessman recorded the band on portable
equipment eventually being released on the Imperial
Record label as “The Progressive Blues Experiment”. Winter recalls a hasty decision that he made
out of frustration that would soon change his destiny
forever. “ I went to England with the idea of moving
my band there” recalls Winter. “When I came back
the Rolling Stone article on me came out and than
every major record label was calling.” Signing with
Columbia Records, in what was reported to be a
highly lucrative deal, Winterʼs became Americaʼs
guitar god to be heralded among Britainʼs own Eric
Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page who were, by
now, dominating the music press. Winterʼs released
four albums while with Columbia which included
his best selling album “Johnny Winter and Live”.
By the mid seventies Winter signed with the CBS
Records distributed label Blue Sky yielding another
four solo albums. He was given the rare opportunity to produce several albums for his idle Muddy
Waters. “Hard Again” and the follow-up album Iʼm
Ready” both earned a Grammy award. “Working
with Muddy was very impressionable”, Winterʼs
fondly recalls. “ He was always one of my biggest
Winterʼs most recent release, “Iʼm A
Bluesman”, on the Virgin label, is his 37th
record to date and is every bit as raw and
exciting as anything he has done to this
point. Of the thirteen new songs there
isnʼt a single track that doesnʼt capture
the power and energy of raw blues as
only Winterʼs could play them. “Iʼm A
Bluesman” hasnʼt gone unnoticed yielding
yet another Grammy nomination proving that an artistʼs of Winterʼs abilities
only gets better with time. Currently on
tour through-out the U.S., with plans to
hit Europe and Japan later in the year,
Winterʼs has already started to prepare for
his next album which is nameless at this
time. “I am starting to make plans for my
next record”, says Winterʼs, which will be
a collection of some of my favorite songs
that have inspired me with guest appearances by some of these artists. We havenʼt
started recording yet but I hope to have
it done later this year.” While Winterʼs
understands the importance of continuing to record he has not lost his gratitude
and appreciation for a fan base that has
never turned their back on him. “I really
love playing on stage in front of a live
audience”, says Winterʼs. “The audiences
are always great to me and I try to make
myself accessible after most every show
to meet people and show them how much
there loyalty has meant.” With all the
changes in the industry over the past twenty years Winterʼs is a realist when it comes
to the current state of things. “Thereʼs not
as much blues now as there was in the sixties”, says Winterʼs. “It used to be really
big but now it isnʼt so much anymore but
you can still find it if you want it. I just
keep touring and showing up wherever I
am supposed to play.” Also in the works
is a “Tell All” book on the life and career
of Johnny Winter, which should be out by
next year. For more info on Johnny Winter
see www.johnnywinter.net
