I recently attended the show featuring
another former SNL favorite, “Father”
Guido Sarducci, who easily played off

With 75 years experience between them,
Master Ryan Perkins and his father/partner Master Mal utilize their impressive
knowledge every day at their Ninja Martial Arts and Fitness Studio. Master Mal
is a 6th degree black belt; Master Ryan
is a 4th degree black belt and a certified
personal trainer.
In 1976, Master Mal launched the business in Ventnor. Forming a co-ownership
plan in 2006, they moved to a 2,000
square foot space, three times the size of
the former studio. The club also operates
a retail store, stocked with martial arts
equipment and workout apparel.
Unlike many other facilities, Ninja Martial
Arts does not require any contracts.
Clients pay reasonable club membership
dues.
Master Ryan says, “Sessions combine
strength training, boxing and martial arts
for a total diversity of activities. Oneon-one, we aim for fitness, weight loss,
strength and conditioning.”
A group of dedicated black belts, with 1525 years’ experience, leads daily 90-minute classes at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The
classes offered are women’s boxing,
American Tae Kwon Do, combat grappling,
Hapkido self-defense and a boxing boot
camp that includes the boxing bag and
calisthenics. Similar to karate, Tae Kwon
Do, the main style of martial arts, means
“the way of the hands and feet”.
Under Youth Manager Greg’s supervision, Ninja Martial Arts offers extensive
programs for youngsters. Plans are
underway to introduce an after-school
program twice weekly in September at
the Ventnor Middle School. “We are seeking local business sponsorships for the
small fees,” says Master Ryan.
The Perkins have a passion for their work,

about their clients’ training successes
and sustained good health.

arts a physical and mental part of our

I dined at Gertrudes in Ventnor last February, but now that owner Derek Paterno
has a full year under his belt, I wanted
to try his food again. Gertrude’s changes
and reprints the menu almost daily.
Summer fruits and vegetables offer
wonderful opportunities to prepare fresh,
interesting platters. I was not disappointed at a recent weeknight visit. Everything
was as good as I remembered. A party of
four, we ordered two appetizers and three
different entrees. All were wonderfully
prepared using fresh ingredients.
Whether you order fish, meat or poultry,
each platter is delivered with an interesting presentation and flavor. Gertrudes has
also added a second daily dessert to its
menu.

Early 1980s Saturday Night Live (SNL)
fans should remember entertainer Joe
Piscopo. Since his 1985 exit from the
show, Piscopo has worked in Hollywood
and on Broadway, while also tirelessly
volunteering for law enforcement, military
and other charitable causes.
This summer, Piscopo is living his own
dream. After years of headlining at others’
showrooms, Piscopo has launched his
own, showcasing his musical and comedic versatility. In early July, he opened
his namesake Club Piscopo nightclub at
Resorts Atlantic City. The club will remain
open at least throughout the summer.
Located in the second floor Starlight
Room, Club Piscopo resembles an oldtime nightclub, with small round tables
up front and longer tables further back.

A loyal Jersey boy from Passaic, Piscopo
offers a slew of Jersey jokes. He works
hard during his 90-minute show, combining comedy, jazz and traditional nightclub

appears in a wig, tuxedo and fedora hat,
doing such a good imitation that you
might think “Old Blue Eyes” had come
back to life. Piscopo ended that set with a
“New York New York” parody, substituting
current “NJ NJ” lyrics for humor.

During the show, Piscopo played five
instruments. He began with a guitar and
imitation of country singer Johnny Cash.
Throughout the show, Piscopo switched
over to the piano, flute and saxophone.
His fabulous finale recreated Gene
Krupa’s memorable drum solo on “Sing
Sing Sing”.
While the music is geared to the over-45
crowd, younger customers have a great
opportunity to learn and enjoy music from
an earlier time. Club Piscopo showcases
the timeless tunes and talents of those
whose fame endured not only during their
own lifetimes, but for decades since their
deaths.

FISHING REPORT
CATCH OF THE WEEK
Michael Allen of Delran had a complaint this week about fishing the bay behind
Margate. He said that he uses two rods which went off one after the other all day long.
Since he stands up each time to retrieve his catch, it is obvious to other anglers that he
is in the thick of the action and they migrate toward his boat to see what he is using.
Not a bad complaint for a week of 100 degree heat! In fact, the heat only slowed down
the anglers, not the fish.

Normal fishing garb changed to bathing suits and beach towels with dunks in the bay
scattered between flounder catches. With the water temperature a hand and feetnumbing 61 degrees, a quick dip was all that was needed for refreshment. Surprises
were in store for the hot weather anglers. Dana Priddy went out with Captain Ed
Giacomucci of Margate in quest of flounder but was hit by a 33 inch striped bass while
cranking in her minnow on the last drift before returning to the dock. Her daughter
Courtney returned with a nineteen inch flounder the next day. Jason Cadiou of Margate
caught his first keeper bay sea bass of the season in addition to his normal catch of a
couple of good sized flounder.
John Nardini, Ron Aita, and Mario Raffa of Philadelphia have spent so much time
fishing the Margate bays, everyone thinks they live here. They had six keeper flounder
on their weekly trip. John Schiavo Jr. and Sr. of Deptford caught three flounder, one at
twenty-three inches. Their friendly father/son competition has them neck and neck this
season. EHT Dad Dominic Cordivari took his daughters Gianna and Sophia along with
friend Alex Hickman out on Saturday to bring home a keeper. The Wassersug family of
Margate tried their hand at crabbing with handlines to discover that their young children
were proficient at bringing home dinner. New Yorkers fleeing the heat did well also with
Lena Tevari and Mark Jay of Coney Island catching two flounder, one at eighteen and
one at twenty. Binghamton, N.Y. residents Maureen Isenburg, Paul Solovyev and Dan
Shuma went out two days in a row, unfazed by the heat and scored four keeper
flounder. Joyce and Roy Kolk of Levittown sent their teenagers to the boards while they
spent a couple of hours catching an eighteen and a twenty inch flounder.

improved REO Speedwagon.
REO has been on a nonstop touring and recording
schedule since 1971. There have been no farewell tours
and no reunion tours. "We started out playing local bars
in Champaign, Illinois and worked our way up from there"
says Doughty.
Their biggest chart success was the 10 million seller
Hi Infidelity (1981) and the No. 1 single "Can't Fight This
Feeling."
MAROON 5'S AC DEBUT JULY 30 AT THE EVENT CENTER.
The current Grammy winning band as best newcomers,
Maroon 5 makes its Atlantic City debut at the Borgata on
Saturday, July 30, 8pm. Tickets are $85.
Maroon 5 are: Adam Levine, vocals, guitar; James
Valentine, guitar; Jesse Carmichael, keyboards; Mickey
Madden, bass and Ryan Dusick, drums. The neo-soul rock
outfit, thanks to the songs, "Harder To Breathe" and "This
Love," has become the Cinderella story for 2005.
Released as a single in the summer of 2002, seventeen
months later "Harder To Breathe" hit No. 4 at Top 40 radio.
Over 500 live shows, including opening stints for John
Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Train, and Counting Crows, and now
a consistent headline act in its own right, have helped to
underscore a list of reasons why Maroon 5's debut CD,
Songs About Jane, had sold more than 3 million. "This
Love" was No. 1 at Top 40, VH1 and MTV, simultaneously,
and was the first song ever to be certified as a platinum
download.

R&B ambitions led to teenage heartthrob status in the late
'90s, are proving they were Never Gone. Their new album
features the singles "Incomplete" and "Just Want You To
Know." The quintet headlines at the Borgata on Friday,
July 29, 8pm at the Event Center. Tickets are $65.

togehter from an early age. Meanwhile in Orlando, Fla.,
Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, and Florida-based Nick
Carter met at auditions and formed a trio. Richardson
moved to Orlando, bumped into McLean and the Backstreet Boys were born.
Initial success in Europe and Canada was eventually
repeated in the US. In 1997 they released their European
album with new tracks as their self-titled stateside debut
including "Backstreet's Back." This greased the wheels
for 1999's Millennium which sold 12 million copies thanks

Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to good people. People
have a strong inclination to avoid dangerous situations and to inform their
friends and family about potential dangers or bad experiences they have
undergone. It is estimated that this immediate circle of friends and family
consists of about three to five hundred people, the number that would
likely attend someone’s wedding or funeral. Thus, it is very important that
the “powers-to-be” in Atlantic City avoid the insidious “reverse marketing”
of our town that happens every time a visitor gets accosted, mugged, or
assaulted in Atlantic City.
Regular readers know that the “Wiz” is all about the odds. The last time I
checked the serious crime stats it revealed that Atlantic City has a higher
crime rate than the notorious high-crime cities of Newark and Camden.
Furthermore, the crime rate, or you odds of becoming a victim in Atlantic
City were about four times higher than they are in Las Vegas.
Last week while playing slots at Bally’s an aggressive panhandler interrupted
my play to request money. A short time ago a relative of mine was shocked
to see a rough character urinating on a Bally’s slot machine next to him. There
are far too many street people and dangerous characters on the prowl in
many of the Boardwalk casinos. Unfortunately, there is little police presence in and around the vulnerable casinos, Furthermore, current in-house
security guards, many from third-world countries, seem oblivious.
We must improve customer safety and avoid this negative “reverse marketing” if our industry is to succeed in the future. Hopefully, those in charge
of the new Atlantic City Tourism District will take notice and clean up the
city so that customers are safe. They are then more likely to tell their friends
about the good times they had in Atlantic City. Only then will we prosper.

Yours truly, Todd M. Cohen honored his Wonderful Parents Frank
& Annell "Nancy" Cohen at a Memorial Tribute & Luncheon held
Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor, NJ.
Todd Cohen delivered the D'var Torah Sermon and led a portion of
the Sabbath Service. Frank Cohen worked for the Guarantee Bank
in Atlantic City, NJ as Internal Auditor in the Installment Loan Dept.
for 26 years & was a Bookkeeper at the Atlantic County Improvement Authority. Frank is a Past Chancellor Commander of Atlantic
Lodge #98, Knights of Pythias and Past President of Ventnor AARP.
Frank & Todd were Ventnor AARP Men Of The Year 1999. Annell
Cohen corresponded with over 50 friends from around the world.
Annell is a Past Ventnor AARP Past President and a Woman Of The
Year 1998. Frank, Annell & Todd Cohen are Long-time, devoted
Members of Congregation Beth Judah.
