World-renown skateboarder Bucky Lasek, along with friend, business partner and fellow skater Skip Winter, is opening a Californiastyle Mexican burrito shop in Newburyport at the end of the month. “Bucky’s Burritos” will be an action-sports theme restaurant complete with signed memorabilia by the biggest names in the business, a full-size half-pipe (for decorative purposes only) and benches made out of snowboards. “I’ve been wanting to do a restaurant for a while, and [Winter] had a couple of investors interested,” Lasek said in a phone interview. “There is a need for authentic Mexican restaurants up and down the East Coast.” The term “action sports” applies to surfing, BMX biking, snowboarding and skateboarding, among other activities. Lasek, who lives in Encinitas, California, is one of the world’s preeminent action sports figures. His first major victory came in the 1999 Summer X-Games when he defeated close friend Tony Hawk to earn a gold medal. He won the gold again in 2000, 2003 and 2004, and helped lead the U.S. team to the gold medal at the 2003 Global X Games. Lasek also has a stated presence in the video game world; fans can select him as their character in each installment of the “Tony Hawk Pro Skater” series. But when it came to marketing, Lasek didn’t TRENDS Continued on 31A• Piscopo benefit show ‘hits’ New Heights BY JOHN DEMING ATLANTIC NEWS STAFF WRITER OPENING NIGHT — Dawn (left) and Natalie, rehearse for Thursday night’s benefit performance of “New Heights Live!” They are two of ten Seacoast area kids who have the chance to share the stage with comedian Joe Piscopo. — Atlantic News Photo by John Deming PORTSMOUTH | If your first acting job is with a former “Saturday Night Live” star, consider yourself fortunate. Ten kids from the New Heights Teen Center were gearing up Monday afternoon of this week to perform at Thursday night’s “New Heights Live!,” where they will share the stage with Joe Piscopo, among other performers at the Portsmouth Music Hall. This is the second year in a row that Piscopo has appeared on behalf of New Heights, last year performing “An Evening of Sinatra.” The kids prepared to actually do some improv with Piscopo for one of several sketches they are performing, produced and directed by theatre veteran Dennic C. Johnson. Piscopo is a little before their time, but some of the kids were very excited at the prospect of working with him. “I think it’s a great honor to be working with Joe Piscopo,” said Natalie, who said she’s seen a lot of his old “Saturday Night Live” skits. Another performer was pleased, though in a slightly different manner. “I heard of Joe Piscopo before, but I thought he was dead,” said Turin. Johnson said he has directed children many times, and that it is always a pleasure. “It’s going real well,” he said. “You can’t teach creativity — you can only unleash it.” PISCOPO Continued on 46A• • News from SMS Class of 2005. • Mask Makers at SES. • Phys ed with Project Adventure. • Cloud Stories. • News from SES Unified Arts Team.
