June 26-28, 2015 - Mayfield Heights
Unity Days Festival June 26-28, 2015 From Mayor DiCicco On behalf of my administration and City Council, I am pleased to welcome you to the 22nd Annual Unity Days – the event has a new date, but the same great food, fun and festivities! This event is the perfect opportunity to take some time to enjoy the company of your neighbors, family and friends. There is a full schedule with something for everyone! There will be rides and games, a vast array of musical groups to entertain you, and wonderful local restaurants to provide a “taste of Mayfield Heights”. The north end of the park will house the always exciting competition of an international bocce tournament. Saturday will end with a bang as we enjoy a remarkable fireworks display at dusk. Sunday’s festivities will begin with our exceptional parade that kicks off at 1:00 pm along Mayfield Road. We are pleased to announce that leading our parade this year will be Grand Marshal Tony Philiou, owner and operator of McDonalds in Mayfield Heights. Tony has been a great business neighbor since purchasing the restaurant in 1978. He has served and employed several generations of our residents. Sincere appreciation is extended to the city employees, commission members, and volunteers who plan, organize and manage this massive event. A special thanks to the local vendors who will participate in the event and to all of our generous sponsors. Of course, we thank the residents who live adjacent to the park area who graciously deal with extra traffic and activity in their neighborhoods throughout the weekend. An event of this magnitude would be impossible without the assistance and cooperation of these individuals and businesses. We are grateful for their enduring support. Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer season! I look forward to seeing you at an event sometime soon. See back City of Mayfield Heights Parade Grand Marshal Tony Philiou Parade starts at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 28th The Mayfield Road McDonald’s Restaurant had just opened in 1961 when Tony Philiou moved into Mayfield Heights and began looking for a part-time job. He was offered the job of cheese slicer for $0.90 an hour at a time when the red and white tiled exterior of the store was set off on either side by those famous golden arches. Tony never left. “I felt it was where I belonged,” he said, and the rest is history. Tony held the part-time job while working a full-time job for five years when the owners convinced him to be their full-time manager. He bought the store in 1978 and has been serving generations of area families ever since. You could say the city, Tony and McDonald’s have grown up together. He has worked on many ventures with the city over the past 54 years, from sponsoring little league teams to helping clean the streets. Tony’s passion and belief that a strong school district will maintain a strong community, has led to his generous work with the Mayfield City Schools. Tony loves seeing his regulars, especially the many senior adults, who have made McDonald’s their “home away from home”. One of Tony’s biggest sources of pride comes from helping employees develop their skills. Some former employees have gone on to open their own stores, scores of high school and college kids have worked in the store while pursuing their education, and others have been working with him for nearly 40 years. Tony would like everyone to know this: He is still green, still excited, and still energetic about working with employees, socializing with customers, and oh yeah, directing traffic. His fast and efficient service, offered in a comfortable setting with so many familiar faces, has made the Mayfield Heights McDonalds a staple in the community. Italian Day Sunday, June 28th Homemade Wine Contest Pasta Relay Contest Mayfield Heights residents, do you think you make the best wine? Prove it! Submit your homemade wine, white or red, whichever is best! Bottles can be brought to the Parks and Recreation Department prior to 4:00 PM on June 26, after which you can bring them to the Info/Raffle ticket booth at Unity Days by Friday, June 26 at 9:00 PM. Judging will occur on Sunday, June 28 at 5:00 PM with results being announced at 6:30 PM, right before the main prize raffle. Registration is $5 per bottle. Can you eat mountains of pasta on Sunday nights with the family? Do you have what it takes to beat teams from our city departments? Put together a hungry 4 team relay and let your stomach do the talking as we see who can eat 4 bowls of pasta the fastest. Registration is $10 per team. Registrations will be taken at the Recreation Department until 4:00 PM on Friday, June 26. After then, teams can register at the Info/Raffle Ticket Booth at Unity Days by Friday, June 26 at 9:00 PM.
