Mayfield and Districts Citizen Association
Hi All,
The Township this summer has experienced some
pressure on the township's well water supply. The
Council has been keeping us informed with well
water levels and so at times had to impose water
restrictions
During the Citizen Association meetings we have
discussed the options of a back up water supply.
A meeting was held at Panthers Rock Cafe one
afternoon with Alan Totty and another Council
Rep to explore ideas. Two options were put
forward. One was to tap into the BCI irrigation
and another was an offer of access to an existing
farm well water. ADC has taken a well water
sample away for testing, and there will be Ecan
consents to work through.
Also at this meeting, water meters were
mentioned. Rather than these being seen as a
negative, they are also a positive in seeing if there
is any water leakage in pipes and joins that the
Council may need to attend too.
Hope this information is helpful.
If you have any concerns, please give me a call.

A busy summer for most! Growing season spared no prisoners & El Nino holidayed somewhere else. Put
a note on ya` calendar - The Hakatere Heritage Committee are running a 4WD fundraiser through the Stour
on Sunday 3 April. $65/vehicle (cash only), high clearance only. Lunch at Manuka Lake & exit out the top
of Lake Heron, behind the Sugarloaf. Bigger & better than last years. Contact Robert Schikker on 3039 826

The Department of Conversation (DOC) have approved the new wasp bait, Vespex, & will be putting out
poison stations next week, with the assistance of the Mt Somers Walkway Society. Once in full song, this
program will bring swift results within a 150 metre circle of each station. Then you`ll be able to talk while
you walk without the buzz in the background. On wasps, I see evidence of increased numbers around
Methven, including the primary school. As soon as practicable, I’ll see what I can do with a bait or two, as
with this poison, the wasps take the bad stuff back to the nest. They do the dirty work.
If you were about the foothills this week (21 - 26th) you may have seen members of the Great NZ Horse
Trek. 300 people involved, from horse riders, supporters, walkers & MTBers. What a spectacle! They
camped one night on the Symons` Farm at Alford Forest; it was like the Gypsies had arrived. A veritable
small town on the move. Participants from England, Aussie & dray loads from up north. I went & bent a few
ears & a very amenable bunch they are. They put their undies on one leg at a time like you & me, only they
have four legs under them .This year’s ride covered from Springfield to Fairlie. Eleven years ago, they
started at Kaitaia, so in a few years, they should be fertilising the streets of Bluff. A great experience for all I now know the front from the back of a horse!
This Easter, earlier than most years, sees the return of the annual Mountain Thunder motorbike event in
Methven. Easter Saturday 26th March. Worthy of your support, especially as it’s run by the Lions as a
community fundraiser.
If you want some small peastraw bales, $5, and wish to feather the coffers of the Methven Care Trust,
contact Sue van den Heuvel on 021-2746657. For decent orders, they’ll deliver. Proceeds toward the
proposed new Resthome.
From: Ashburton District Council
Subject: Time to trim rural shelterbelts
Rural landowners urged to trim back roadside shelterbelts ahead of winter
Ashburton District Council is encouraging property owners with overgrown roadside shelterbelts to trim
back or remove problem trees ahead of winter. Council roading manager Brian Fauth said large shelterbelt
trees can shade rural roads, making them icy and dangerous in winter.
Gritting shade-affected roads reduces the ice hazard but is coming at a growing cost to the Ashburton
district. About $200,000 was spent on gritting rural roads in 2015.
The Council will soon start contacting property owners that have troublesome trees on busy rural roads.
“Once we have identified the sites where trees are shading the road, we will contact the site owners to
discuss their responsibilities in trimming them back. We will also be asking for the work to be done within a
reasonable timeframe,” Mr Fauth said.
By acting early on the issue, the Council is hoping to prevent potential accidents and reduce the need for
gritting when winter arrives.

THE OLD POST OFFICE LIBRARY, MT SOMERS
Open Thursdays and Sundays 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Or by appointment] or whenever the sign is out in front of the building
The Library has been so well used over the Christmas period and it is still happening!! We are continuing to
restock the shelves outside and the books disappear [and then sometimes reappear, thank you!!] very
quickly. Thank you to the kind readers who have dropped off books for those shelves, we do appreciate that
and I’m sure all the tourists and campers do too.
We have collected our new books and they are on the shelves. We also have the 4th book in the Bronze
Horseman series……”.Children of Liberty” by Paullina Simons. This is a prequel to her other three books.
And the last book in the Deborah Challinor Convict Girls series…..”Tatooed Heart” is on the shelves too.
The ultimate psychological thriller is there ….The Widow” and “ Coffin Road”, another book getting plenty
of exposure. Talking of which…………Helen Dunmore’s latest “Exposure” has been purchased as well. I
am halfway through and loving it!. She is such a good writer. We have another of hers, “The Lie” which our
readers have been enjoying and I am looking out for any others we can find in secondhand bookshops. I
have a friend who works in one of the used book shops in Christchurch and there is a box out the back of
their shop where they drop any double-ups for our Library. A very big thank you to the ladies who have
arranged this. It means we have a constant supply of good paperbacks coming into circulation either for our
Library shelves or for the outside shelves.
We hope to purchase ‘ Paradise through the Seasons” ….A Year in the Life of Trotts Garden……….. by
Alan Trott of Ashburton , a beautiful publication with stunning photography by Alan. I am lucky enough to
own a copy and it is truly stunning.
All welcome to share our reading haven contact Anne 3039734, Robbie 3039767, Pam 3039150.
CROSSROADS - NEWSLETTER
March 2016
Mayfield Mt Somers Anglican Parish – Plains Presbyterian Parish
I am feeling very unsettled and distracted as I
write this. Later today we are going up to
Christchurch for the funeral of a niece. Within
about fifteen months we lost three of our
generation on Harvey’s side of the family. Today
it is the next generation that we are farewelling
and it is a bit tough. Barbara at fifty-eight is only
five and half years older than our eldest child.
Three weeks ago, Barbara was told she had
cancer of the uterus, but more tests needed to be
done to see if the cancer had spread, before they
could operate. Last Monday, her pain was so bad
that her sister took her to the hospital and later in
the afternoon they were told that she might not
survive the night, but if she did she only had days
left and she died in the small hours of Friday
morning. Barbara lived about a month longer than
her father who died of bowel cancer when he was
fifty-eight.
Many of us wonder if cancer is more prevalent
now than it used to be. Was it around two
thousand years ago when Jesus walked this earth
or is it a disease that has developed in recent times
as a result of the way we now live. I don’t know.
But I do know that Jesus told us to be ready for
death, because none of us know when we will exit
this world. Maybe the season of Lent is a good
time to think about where we are at in our faith
walk, should our lives suddenly come to an end.

Follows is an edited letter from Bryan and Dorelle Gilmour, who were in
the Mayfield Presbyterian Parish a year or two ago. It contains a request.
To All Our Loved Ones and Dear Friends through the last Six Decades.
We extend to you personally our warmest Greetings and love. We have
just concluded our last chapter of Retirement ministries, extending over
seventeen years. It has been an enriching time of maintaining or enabling
new ministries and in some cases, whole new directions. We deeply thank
all those who have cared for us and enabled us to be very much a part of
your church fellowship and family in the creative journeys we shared
together. We have been blessed and inspired by your creative tenacity to walk the hard yards to fulfil your
spirit-filled dreams. You will be ever in our hearts and prayers as you venture forward in the power of
God’s Presence and leading.
Many of you who receive this Greeting, contributed much to the fulfilment of those challenges and dreams
and you will remember special anecdotal conversations or events that contributed to the unfolding outcomes
of God glorified ministries. We believe now, in reflection, that the stories should not be lost, for they may
be the inspiration for others in ever new challenging situations in future decades. We would like to write
these stories with your help and invite you to send us any pertinent remembrances you have of any of these
unfolding faith journeys and mission possibilities. Please email these to [email protected]
PRAYER FOR LENT
For Humility and Unselfishness
O Lord, give us more charity, more self-denial,
more likeness to Thee. Teach us to sacrifice our
comforts to others, and our likings for the sake of
doing good. Make us kindly in thought, gentle in
word, generous in deed. Teach us that it is better
to give than to receive, better to forget ourselves
than to put ourselves forward; better to minister
than to be ministered unto. And unto Thee, the
God of Love, be all glory and praise, both now
and for evermore. Amen.
(Dean Henry Alford, A.D. 1810)
A JOURNEY WITH JESUS
Loving Jesus, we believe that you carried your
cross to Calvary and died there for our sins. As
we begin this Way of the Cross with you today,
we want to understand what happened on Good
Friday so long ago. Show us how much you loved
us. Please be with us in every step of our own
journey through life.
Jesus, you promised the thief who was crucified
with you that he would be with you in heaven.
That is where we want to go when we die too.
Help us to forgive those who hurt us. Please
forgive us when we hurt others. Make me always
to be ready to be happy with you in heaven.
EASTER JOY
Jesus came to earth,
To show us how to live,
How to put others first,
How to love and how to give.
Then He set about His work,
That God sent Him to do;
He took our punishment on Himself;
He made us clean and new.
He could have saved Himself,
Calling angels from above,
But He chose to pay our price for sin;
He paid it out of love.
Our Lord died on Good Friday,
But the cross did not destroy
His resurrection on Easter morn
That fills our hearts with joy.
Now we know our earthly death,
Like His, is just a rest.
We'll be forever with Him
In heaven, where life is best.
So we live our lives for Jesus,
Think of Him in all we do.
Thank you Saviour; Thank you Lord.
Help us love like you!
